"When you grow stronger, you grow up to be a beautiful healthy person"| Developing an awareness of wellness with early adolescent girls using action research

<p> Girls in early adolescence today face numerous challenges to their positive and successful growth into happy, productive, and powerful women. These challenges may include peer pressure, racism, family issues, school navigation, and poor self-image. The purpose of this action research study was to examine the potential of a weekly wellness program for girls in the 5th through 8th grades. Research was conducted with 13 early adolescent girls utilizing interviews, observations, and participant journal reflections and incorporating interactive lessons and physical activity. In particular, the research examined how lessons with a focus on the effects of healthy behavior positively affected the participants. Participants were encouraged to reflect on experiences and individual challenges, and were taught strategies that allowed them to connect the mitigation of those challenges to the physical activities they participated in. Results indicated 3 areas of importance among all participants: having connections with individuals in their life, understanding a sense of wellness and maintaining that wellness through the challenges presented to them, and creating and reaching new goals in life. Classroom educators, social workers, recreation managers, and planners are encouraged to foster and implement wellness programs that include physical, nutritional, social, and emotional education for early adolescent girls in all communities.</p>

Analyzing the impact of job dissatisfaction among social workers in managed care

<p> Employee job satisfaction is an ongoing concern in the field of social work. High caseloads, low compensation, and the lack of job security are sources of job dissatisfaction for novice and seasoned social workers in managed care settings. Specifically, the purpose was to determine if there is a correlation between high caseloads, the lack of job security, and low compensation and job dissatisfaction among novice (<i>n</i> = 24) managed care social workers and seasoned (<i>n</i> = 86) social workers in Texas and the surrounding areas. The emphasis of these factors, if not recognized and addressed through interventions by health care administrators, can lead to novice or seasoned managed care social workers&rsquo; dissatisfaction and within their position and careers with an ending result of desirable professional leaving the field of social work. Herzberg&rsquo;s two-factor theory guided the study. The independent variables were selected for use in a multiple regression analysis at the .05 level of significance. No correlation was found between high caseloads and job dissatisfaction among novice social workers or between low compensation and job dissatisfaction among novice and seasoned social workers. High caseloads were correlated with job dissatisfaction among seasoned social workers. A correlation was found between the lack of job security and job dissatisfaction between novice and seasoned social workers. The research study collected data used in sealing the gap in the health care community by providing valuable information and directions for health care administrators to focus on in an attempt to reduce turnover, increase productivity, and improve the quality of patient care.</p>

Psychoeducation for Latino caregivers of individuals with mental illness| A curriculum

<p>The purpose of this psychoeducational curriculum is for Latino caregivers to enhance their awareness in the Mental Health field, as advocate for their family members. Educating caregivers on how to access services, and overcome stigma, language barriers, and cultural insensitivity also to enhance quality services. The curriculum specifically addresses outreach. The curriculum will expand caregivers? understanding the symptoms of mental illness including diagnosis, and the importance of self-care to prevent burnout. It will include activities that will promote group discussions, and concepts for learning enhancement. Additionally, handouts will be provided with resources for support services for caregivers. A facilitators? guide is also included to assist with the implementation of the curriculum.

Balance beyond work life : an empirical study of older people's time use in the UK

This thesis examines how patterns of time use change in later life and how the way in which older people use their time is related to well-being. Arguing that maintaining balance in time use concerns not only people of working age but matters for people of all ages, we propose an alternative theoretical framework of life balance. This consists of two conceptual models: The Life Balance Triangle and Multidimensional Life Balance (MLB). Using UK time use data, the thesis demonstrates the empirical applicability of these two models in enhancing our understanding of older people's daily lives. The life balance model, which we built by modifying the theoretical categorisation of time use by &Aring;s (1978) and the work-leisure triangle of Gershuny (2003), identifies and presents alteration in time use across the life course as changes in balance between constraints (committed time) and freedom of choice (discretionary time), controlling for time spent on biological/physiological maintenance (regenerative time). We find the balance shifts towards greater discretionary, and less committed, time in later life, with a significant gender gap. Life stage, which reflects social structure and expectations, rather than biological ageing, was found to be the most influential factor for life balance dynamics. Findings suggest that men may find it more difficult to adjust to life beyond work because of abrupt and greater changes in life balance, which may disrupt their daily time structure. The multidimensional life balance model challenges the assumption of a linear relationship between the level of activity and well-being of older people. Adapting the Alkire-Foster method (Alkire and Foster, 2011), we propose a threshold-based approach that takes the heterogeneity of older people and multidimensionality of daily life into account, and emphasises overall balance in the level of activities across various activity domains. Results show MLB is associated positively with better self-assessed health, suggesting a threshold effect. We also identify the demographic/socio-economic groups more likely to lack MLB, as well as domains in which most people are deficient. The thesis contributes to work-life balance research by moving beyond paid-work centrality, and to ageing research by providing a multidimensional approach to activities and well-being in later life.

Exploring the discursive limits of "suicide" in the classroom: a Foucauldian-inspired discourse analysis of a school-based youth suicide prevention program.

Research into the phenomenon of youth suicide is typically guided by quantitative methodologies focused on young people who have attempted or died by suicide. Questions related to epidemiology, etiology, and the development of actuarial measures of risk are often the drivers of these particular kinds of research. Similarly, research into school-based youth suicide prevention curricula is predominantly focused on quantitative measures of the degree to which young people acquire knowledge or change attitudes about suicide, after exposure to a delivered program. Grounded in post-structural ideas, the purpose of this thesis is to expand upon these mainstream inquiries into youth suicide prevention education through close exploration and analysis of how “suicide” is discursively produced within the context of a classroom delivered curriculum. This study will pay particular attention to the discursive productions of suicide in the curriculum, as well as how these productions result in the constitution of particular objects, concepts, and subjectivities. Transcripts of “naturally occurring classroom talk” will serve as the site of analysis. Troubling contemporary “truth regimes” about suicide and its prevention through close analysis of the discursive frames by which they are produced offers up the potential of re-imagining new possibilities for thinking about and delivering youth suicide prevention education.

This study explores the health and well-being of eight racialized and Indigenous women between the ages of 21 and 28, who live in Victoria, BC. Participants use Photovoice, a participatory research strategy, to examine and discuss their intersecting everyday realities in the contexts of health, well-being and identity. Through this project, I aim to provide an in-depth understanding of social exclusion, as a social determinant of health, and investigate the micro-social processes that occur at the intersections of race, class and gender, among many other social relations. I draw upon transnational feminist, anti-racist and postcolonial theories to shed light on the complexity of our shifting and emergent identities. The stories that participants share indicate that historical processes of colonization, daily forms of racism, migration, nationalism, citizenship and cultural essentialization are key contributors to their processes of identity formation and subsequently, their experiences of health and wellness.

A process evaluation of "Step It Up": a team-based physical activity intervention for teachers that incorporates goal setting and pedometers

The literature suggests that many teachers are burning out and are stressed and unwell. Health promotion in the school setting with a focus on students is becoming more and more prevalent. However, research has not adequately investigated the effects of health promotion in the school setting focused on the teachers. This study explores the experiences of the teachers who took part in the “Step It Up” program which is a pedometer program including goal setting and teams. This is a mixed methodology as the data was collected using semi structured interviews, open ended questionnaires and a document review of the step logging records. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed according the Colaizzi procedures seeking the barriers and the benefits of the program as experienced by the teachers. Through data analysis, the benefit main themes were; motivation, awareness and social support. The barrier themes found were; step logging, time management and goal setting. In conclusion with the recommendations and modifications suggested in this study, the “Step it Up” program is feasible in the school- setting.

Analisou-se como explicam as suas causas; a forma como enfrentam e buscam a resolução ou mitigação desses problemas de saúde, as terapêuticas utilizadas, a interferência que elas acarretam em suas rotinas de vida e identidades. A revisão da literatura da Saúde Coletiva sobre a saúde do homem e masculinidades mostrou que as demandas masculinas na busca por tratamentos nos serviços públicos de saúde e a percepção de que são portadores de necessidades específicas de saúde são minoritárias. Constatou-se também que as abordagens socioantropológicas de como eles convivem e lidam com as enfermidades que os acometem também são raras. Justifica-se, portanto, o interesse e as razões que motivaram este trabalho. As demandas minoritárias masculinas aos serviços de saúde, concebidas a partir da masculinidade tradicional socialmente vigente, e os dados epidemiológicos das altas taxas de morbimortalidade masculina, embasaram a formulação da Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde do Homem (PNAISH), cujos objetivos buscam promover a melhora da saúde da população masculina na faixa etária dos 20 aos 59, facilitando o seu acesso aos serviços de atendimento integral à saúde na atenção primária. Campinas abriga projeto piloto de tal política. Analisou-se o processo de implementação da PNAISH em um dos centros de saúde da cidade elegido como piloto, cujos serviços estruturam-se na Estratégia Saúde da Família. Entrevistou-se 9 profissionais que nele atuam, especificamente na saúde do adulto, considerando o conhecimento que têm de tal política, as atividades que realizam para o seu atendimento, e os obstáculos observados que dificultam a sua implementação. Para o estudo da experiência da enfermidade com a hipertensão e dores lombares crônicas, entrevistou-se 15 homens, com média etária 56 anos, residentes no bairro da unidade de saúde em questão e que utilizaram em algum momento o serviço público de saúde. As entrevistas de todos os entrevistados foram transcritas, lidas exaustivamente para identificar os temas recorrentes. Na análise, os temas classificados foram distribuídos em categorias gerais, como corpo masculino, cuidados, problemas de saúde, interpretando-os à luz das leituras socioantropológicas realizadas e sempre que possível, articulando a experiência e as representações da enfermidade, através dos relatos interpretados pelo pesquisador. Concluiu-se que as experiências da enfermidade são sempre peculiares e biográficas, no entanto, trazem consigo referências sociais e culturais mais amplas, devendo ser ambas consideradas, para não cobrir de opacidade, tanto as experiências quanto as representações, as pessoas que as vivem e os modos de interpretá-las e significá-las. O estudo da experiência da enfermidade pode, assim, contribuir para a reflexão sobre a inserção e visibilidade masculinas nos serviços públicos de saúde, ampliando o olhar dos agentes implementadores da política de saúde do homem sobre suas ações / Abstract: This study examined the experiences and representations of male workers about the body, health, illness and care, and major health problems perceived by them, namely, hypertension and chronic back pain. Analyzed as explain its causes; how face and seek the resolution or mitigation of these health problems, therapeutic use, they entail interference in their daily lives and identities. The literature of Public Health on the men¿s health and masculinities showed that male demands in the search for treatments in public health services and the perception that they are carriers of specific health needs are minority. It was found that sociological and anthropological approaches to how they live and deal with the illness that affect them are also rare. It is justifiable, therefore, the interest and the reasons that motivated this work. The male minority demands on health services, designed from traditional masculinity prevailing social and epidemiological data of high rates of male mortality, provide the basis for formulating of Brazilian Comprehensive Healthcare Policy for Men, whose objectives seek to promote improving the health of the male population aged 20 to 59, facilitating their access to comprehensive health care in primary care services. Campinas (Brazil) is a home pilot projects this policy. We analyzed the process of implementation of this policy in a health center city chosen as a pilot, whose services are structured in the Family Health Strategy. We interviewed 9 professionals working in it, specifically in adult health, considering their knowledge this policy,care activities they perform to meet the objectives this policy, and perceived obstacles that hinder their implementation. The study of illness experience with hypertension and chronic back pain were collected from 15 men, mean age 56 years, residents in the health unit concerned district and used at some point the public health service. The interviews all respondents were transcribed, read thoroughly to identify recurring themes. In the analysis, ranked themes were divided into broad categories such as male body, care, health problems, interpreting them in the light of the sociological and anthropological readings taken and where possible, combining the experience and representations of illness through reports interpreted by researcher. It was concluded that the illness experiences are always quirky and biographical, however, bring with broader social and cultural references, and should be considered, not to cover opacity, both experiences and representations, the people who live and ways to interpret and signify them. They may also widen the debate on inclusion and male visibility in public health services, expanding the eye of policy makers on their political actions directed to men¿s health / Doutorado / Ciências Sociais em Saúde / Doutor em Saude Coletiva
