The competent and dependent child : a study on care, education and gender

Louthander, Jessica January 2013 (has links)
This essay is an attempt to investigate how conversations about learning and care are distributed in the pick-up situation in preschool. The intention is to analyse how that could be understood in constructing children and childhood. Education and care are in the text separated concepts to clarify aspects of care in an otherwise dominant discourse of learning. The theoretical viewpoint is based on social constructivism and partly on childhood studies. To reach the purpose of this essay, observations where done during four afternoons at two public preschools in Stockholm March- April 2013. This essay is based on an ethnographic approach, and understood from a hermeneutic view. The conclusion and result from the observations is that conversations during observed pick-up situations are mainly about care. Only four conversation concerns learning, these four conversations are about girls. When the children’s gender was written out in conversations about care as well, it exposed other aspects of how gender is constructed in observed pick-up situations. The observations reveals a tendency whereas conversations about care, understood as routines connected to eating and sleeping, are described more in detail about boys. When it comes to clothes, as an aspect of care, girls are expected to take responsibility over their clothes, but never boys. This elucidates how boys are more likely to be constructed as depending on care, whereas girls are constructed as reasonable and learning in observed pick-up situations.

Situation of Zainichi Koreans in the context of Takeshima/Dokdo issue / Zainiči korėjiečių padėtis Takešimos/Dokdo salų konflikto kontekste

Kumpis, Arvydas 05 June 2013 (has links)
Takeshima/Dokdo issue is an ongoing territorial dispute between Japan and South Korea. Dispute is being constantly renewed, resulting in clashes in political arena. This issue is represented in various aspects, such as historical, economical or political one. Nevertheless, social construct of Zainichi Koreans are often excluded from the discourse of this issue, though their ambiguous situation may be directly affected by the course of Takeshima/Dokdo issue. Therefore, the hypothesis was raised - in Japan Zainichi Koreans undergo discrimination, which is intensifying according to the course of Takeshima/Dokdo issue. In order to verify the hypothesis, in-depth interviews with Zainichi Koreans were conducted. Nevertheless, mainly because of unreliability of research subjects, no instances of different treatment with Zainichi Koreans were witnessed.

Social media pedagogy: a multiple case study approach

Nantais, Michael 14 August 2014 (has links)
Social media are often touted to have the potential to transform education. These media enable students to connect with others from around the world, to work collaboratively, and to share their learning with an authentic audience. The literature offers support, yet raises questions about this promise. The intent of this research was to examine how and why some classroom teachers make use of social media for teaching and to determine if, and how, this changes their pedagogical practices. A qualitative, interpretivist multiple case study approach was used to tell the stories of nine teachers in a rural Canadian prairie school as they explored and implemented various social media in their teaching practices. A hermeneutic and phenomenological approach formed the theoretical framework guiding this study. The primary source of data was a multi-part interview consisting of conversations held over the six-month study. Participants reflected upon and shared their perspectives as they made use of social media in their teaching practice. Other data sources included a variety of relevant documents such as school plans and online interactions undertaken by the participants. The analysis followed a constant comparative thematic analysis method, providing a rich exploration of the phenomenon of social media pedagogy. The teachers in this study generally found their use of social media to be a positive experience; however, several challenges and areas of concern were identified. The teachers’ reasons for using social media included communication, engagement and motivation, exposure of student work to a broader audience, and collaborative activities. Supports for implementing social media were identified and included good access to working technology and professional learning. The teachers raised concerns such as privacy, safety, and time constraints. Ethical and appropriate use of social media was seen not only as a concern, but also as an opportunity to teach. Impacts on teaching practice ranged from the addition of strategies to teaching repertoires, to change that could be considered as transformative learning. One of the most significant results was the apparent effect on the school environment. Trust and responsibility were extended to students, and the response was increased communication and connection between students and teachers.

I äran att vara kvinna : Genussyn och dess användning inom new age / Selling Femininity : Gender Stereotypes and Their Uses in New Age

Nordeborn, Gustav January 2014 (has links)
New Age has often been described as a religion pertaining to women and studies has shown that women do indeed constitute the vast majority. A reversal of hierarchy between feminine and masculine attributes and values, common in a modern western society, has also been shown to occur. This study looks at how the feminine is visible in written text and pictures depicting people, more specifically in the periodical magazine Free that has a circulation of circa 25,000. The main bulk of the magazine is advertisements, and one reoccurring part is the article Frimodigt where several of the magazine’s advertisers take part in a short interview. Twelve of these interviews have been analyzed, along with depictions of 518 people from three issues. The theoretical framework that has been applied to the outcome of my analysis has been social constructivism, with particular emphasis on the paper Doing gender by the professors of sociology Candace West and Don Zimmerman. My findings indicate that the feminine, indeed, is thought of as very positive and sometimes contrasted with the masculine. This is not, however, reflected in the visual depictions of people since there doesn’t seem to be any difference between how men and women are portrayed. What sets them apart is how often they are portrayed where women, on average, is depicted 70 % of the time. The invocation of feminine traits in Frimodigt shows that gender roles and norms can be used in marketing by attributing these positive traits to the product being marketed. Furthermore, this indicates that the very act of taking part in this material as a believer can be seen as a feminine act that can make women be more feminine, and men to come in contact with, and develop, their feminine side. Another consequence is that New Age might be seen as very attractive to women because of their appraisal of femininity and the fact that the religion seems to be dominated and ruled by women, in stark contrast to more patriarchal religions.

How was my school experience? : Seven individuals own stories about their school experiences with diagnostics ADHD.

El-Ghariri, Samar, Azra, Lakvancic January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to study how students diagnosed with ADHD has experienced their time in school and how they regard their teachers approach. A qualitative method was used based on six interviews with adults diagnosed with ADHD. This dissertation is based on three questions, how did the students diagnosed with ADHD experience their time at school? How was their relationship to their teachers? How was the teaching adapted to their ADHD? The theoretical starting points have been social constructivism and the relational perspective. The results and analysis were processed through the hermeneutic approach. The interviews showed similarities and differences. A common denominator was however found between the respondents. This showed that the treatment and approach of the students by their teachers was very important in regards to how they experienced school. Something which showed in all respective interviews was the feeling of not being normal.

Ljus, Helen, Helene, Wahlberg January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate how a parenthood that is good enough is described and defined by personnel at an assessment home for children and parents. The method used was a semi-structured focus group interview with a selection of personnel from an assessment home. The result was analysed based on social constructionism and gender perspective. The results showed that the assessment personnel had a consistent definition and description of when a parenthood is and is not good enough. The focus group shared the notion that a good enough parenting means that parents need to show the personnel the ability to change and the ability to mentor about the child's needs based on age-sensitive treatment. The informants did not consider that they make a distinction between mothers and fathers regarding the division of responsibilities. Based on social construction theory, it was discussed whether parents can show the requested parenting skills when the social construction of the assessment home of what it means to be good enough parent may collide with the parents.

The use of blogs for teaching and learning in UK and US Higher Education

Garcia, Elaine January 2017 (has links)
Within the last decade there has been a significant increase in the range of Social Media tools that have become available. This has led to a significant increase in the use and popularity of Social Media within many aspects of everyday life, particularly within the UK and US. One of the areas in which there has been a rise in the use of Social Media is within Higher Education (HE). Within HE there have been reports that Social Media has been successfully utilized for teaching and learning, particularly in the case of blogs. Despite reportedly successful usage there has to date been relatively few empirical studies which have explored whether the use of blogs within teaching and learning leads to an increase in perceived learning by students. This research study therefore provides an empirical study of perceived learning by students when using blogs within teaching and learning in UK and US HE. This research study adopts a post positivist research approach and a quantitative research design method. Questionnaires have been utilised in order to explore student views of perceived learning when using blogs as a tool for HE teaching and learning within the UK and US. This study provides a framework for student use of blogs within HE teaching and learning and explores whether the use of blogs in this way leads to greater levels of perceived learning amongst students. The results of this research are analysed using PLS-SEM and have shown that the successful use of blogs for teaching and learning is complex. The results have demonstrated that students do report higher degrees of learning from using blogs within teaching and learning, however, this is influenced by the perceptions students hold relating to digital technology, teaching and learning, previous experience and expectations of blogging. The results of this study have implications for both HE teachers and HE students and provides a framework which can be used to help ensure the successful use of blogs when utilised for HE teaching and learning within the UK and US in the future.

Rámcování tématu bezdomovectví českými celostátními médii / Framing of Homelessness by the Czech Nationwide Media

Straškrábová, Eva January 2018 (has links)
1 Annotation This master's thesis focuses on a specific area of mass media functioning, with reference to a particular social problem - homelessness. Descriptive analysis is used to investigate media content by original research, and to identify frames, which typically accompany the topic of homelessness in the Czech nationwide media. Therefore, the main theoretical framework is outlined by the paradigm of social constructivism and the theory of media framing. The major part of the presented text is the research itself, initially inspired by the foreign media studies of T. G Shields (2001) and C. Zufferey (2014). The method of quantitative content analysis is used to explore the contents of six selected nationwide media, covering three various media types. To be exact, the contents considered are media news issued by daily Právo and Blesk, by television channels ČT 1 and Nova, and radio channels Radiožurnál and Impuls, within the decade of January 1st 2007 to December 31st 2016. Primary attention is drawn to the media space dedicated to reporting on the topic of homelessness, to the manner in which homeless people are represented in the media, to framing of causes and treatment of homelessness, and to the speakers, who are given the chance to explicitly speak in the media. Last but not least, the scope and...
