A systematic review of technology to support adult learning in communities of practice /

This thesis presents a systematic review regarding the way technology supports adult learning in communities of practice. It presents the systematic review procedure that was developed, based on NBS CRD (2001) protocol, from publication sources relevant to the topic. It includes the identification of research from an initial question that is: how does technology support adult learning in communities of practice. In addition, it presents a search strategy, a study quality assessment, a data extraction strategy and a synthesis of findings. Because most of the pertinent research is qualitative, a typology of qualitative research and a critical appraisal checklist for quality assessment were designed and are presented. The results presented have synthesized evidence from studies that meet certain quality criteria and they are discussed in terms of (a) the kinds of technologies applied in communities of practice, and (b) successful features of the technology that seem to contribute to learning.

Learning for Sustainability through Community Forest Management

Community forestry is considered a collaborative governance approach that notionally provides local communities with some decision-making authority about forest management, as well as being promoted as a promising approach for ensuring forest sustainability and encouraging social learning among participants. Based on these potential benefits, this research investigated how collaboration and learning can help in managing community forests sustainably. The research involved a qualitative case study, focused on the Wetzinkwa Community Forest Corporation (WCFC) located in Smithers, British Columbia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with WCFC participants, forest tours, participant observation, and document review. The results indicate that individual and social learning did occur through collaborating on forest management issues such as sustainable forest management and benefit distribution. Further, the data shows the WCFC was making progress in sustainably managing the forest through efforts such as protecting forest under-story and embarking on a project to ensure forest health and resiliency.

Learning to Repair Transgressions: Toddlers' Social Learning of a Reparative Prosocial Act

This study investigated children's social learning of prosocial behaviors in a transgressor context. Two-to three-year-olds (24-47 months, N = 54) saw videos of an adult help another adult in distress by performing a novel prosocial action. Children were then led to believe that they had transgressed to cause their parent's pain and sadness. It was hypothesized that children in the experimental condition who watched the video and then transgressed would be more likely to perform the novel action (imitation) and to display non-demonstrated prosocial behaviors (goal emulation) relative to children in two control conditions: (a) children who did not view the video but transgressed and (b) children who viewed the video but witnessed a neutral interaction. Children in the experimental condition were no more likely to imitate or emulate than children in the control conditions, suggesting that children have difficulty applying socially learned prosocial behaviors in a transgressor context.

This study means to research the importance and significance of the social and informal learning opportunities offered at a workplace. With Wenger’s theory about social learning and communities of practice as a starting point, this study will create understanding about how teachers at a school comprehend their opportunities for learning within the teacher community. The study is conducted at an independent school in Sweden, and is based on interviews with eight of the teachers employed at the school. The purpose of the study was to research how employees perceive how their social interactions with their colleagues can create learning, and what obstacles they might face along the way. Our results showed that the teachers at this workplace found that most of the learning that took place in their everyday worklife was performed in an informal and social way with lots of helping each other out and social interactions between the colleagues.

A generic architecture for interactive intelligent tutoring systems

This research is focused on developing a generic intelligent architecture for an interactive tutoring system. A review of the literature in the areas of instructional theories, cognitive and social views of learning, intelligent tutoring systems development methodologies, and knowledge representation methods was conducted. As a result, a generic ITS development architecture (GeNisa) has been proposed, which combines the features of knowledge base systems (KBS) with object-oriented methodology. The GeNisa architecture consists of the following components: a tutorial events communication module, which encapsulates the interactive processes and other independent computations between different components; a software design toolkit; and an autonomous knowledge acquisition from a probabilistic knowledge base. A graphical application development environment includes tools to support application development, and learning environments and which use a case scenario as a basis for instruction. The generic architecture is designed to support client-side execution in a Web browser environment, and further testing will show that it can disseminate applications over the World Wide Web. Such an architecture can be adapted to different teaching styles and domains, and reusing instructional materials automatically can reduce the effort of the courseware developer (hence cost and time) in authoring new materials. GeNisa was implemented using Java scripts, and subsequently evaluated at various commercial and academic organisations. Parameters chosen for the evaluation include quality of courseware, relevancy of case scenarios, portability to other platforms, ease of use, content, user-friendliness, screen display, clarity, topic interest, and overall satisfaction with GeNisa. In general, the evaluation focused on the novel characteristics and performances of the GeNisa architecture in comparison with other ITS and the results obtained are discussed and analysed. On the basis of the experience gained during the literature research and GeNisa development and evaluation. a generic methodology for ITS development is proposed as well as the requirements for the further development of ITS tools. Finally, conclusions are drawn and areas for further research are identified.

The Relationship Between Perceptual And Social Learning Styles And Multiple Intelligences And Their Effects On English Proficiency Of Turkish Young Adults Learning English As A Foreign Language

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between preferences of multiple intelligences, perceptual and social learning styles, and English as foreign language proficiency. Two self-report questionnaires were administered to a total of 123 participants. The results showed that dominant intelligence preference was inter-personal and major learning-style preference was kinesthetic. Pearson correlation results revealed statistically significant positive relations between interpersonal intelligence and group learning style / linguistic intelligence and individual learning style / logical-mathematical intelligence and individual learning style / intra-personal intelligence and individual learning style / inter-personal intelligence and kinesthetic learning style in addition to negative relations between interpersonal intelligence and individual learning style / musical intelligence and individual learning style, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligence and tactile learning style. This indicates that pedagogical implications should consider individuals&rsquo / intelligences and learning style preferences, and further studies are needed to investigate the interactions among preferences of styles and intelligences. Finally, multiple regression results showed that logical-mathematical intelligence preference and visual learning style preference were the primary contributors to the English proficiency. Since no previous research was found comparing preferences of multiple intelligences and perceptual and social learning styles of foreign language learners, this study provided data-driven evidence for the interrelations between them. Those relationships as well as factorial structure for preferences for multiple intelligences and learning styles were discussed. Moreover, the need for further development of the questionnaires and the need for mixed method data collection were emphasized. Implications for interactions among learning styles and multiple intelligences were discussed.
