Measurement-based Characterization of Large-Scale Networked Systems

Motamedi, Reza 01 May 2017 (has links)
As the Internet has grown to represent arguably the largest “engineered” system on earth, network researchers have shown increasing interest in measuring this large-scale networked system. In the process, structures such as the physical Internet or the many different (logical) overlay networks that this physical infrastructure enables have been the focus of numerous studies. Many of these studies have been fueled by the ease of access to “big data”. Moreover, they benefited from advances in the study of complex networks. However, an important missing aspect in typical applications of complex network theory to the study of real-world distributed systems has been a general lack of attention to domain knowledge. On the one hand, missing or superficial domain knowledge can negatively affect the studies “input”; that is, limitations or idiosyncrasies of the measurement methods can render the resulting graphs difficult to interpret if not meaningless. On the other hand, lacking or insufficient domain knowledge can result in specious “output”; that is, popular graph abstractions of real-world systems are incapable of accounting for “details” that are important from an engineering perspective. In this thesis, we take a closer look at measurement-based characterization of a few real-world large-scale networked systems and focus on the role that domain knowledge plays in gaining a thorough understanding of these systems key properties and behavior. More specifically, we use domain knowledge to (i) design context-aware measurement strategies that capture the relevant information about the system of interest, (ii) analyze the captured view of the networked system baring in mind the abstraction imposed by the chosen graph representation, and (iii) scrutinize the results derived from the analysis of the graph-based representations by investigating the root causes underlying these findings. The main technical contribution of our work is twofolds. First, we establish concrete connections between the amount and level of domain knowledge needed and the quality of the measurements collected from networked systems. Second, we also provide concrete evidence for the role that domain knowledge plays in the analysis of views inferred from measurements collected from large-scale networked systems

Rede social de um grupo de portadores de esquizofrenia seguidos em um serviço de saúde mental na comunidade / A social network of schizophrenia carriers followed by a mental health service in the community.

Guilherme Correa Barbosa 07 February 2011 (has links)
Estes instrumentos são de fácil utilização e facilitam a interação pesquisador com os participantes / Mental health policies show a great tendency to recommend an inclusion of the chronic mental disorder carrier in the community. It is important to study these carriers social network to understand the social reality and understand the complexity of the relations and social interactions present in the processes that structure the chronic mental disorder carrier\'s sociability . METHODOLOGY: A descriptive research that used a questionnaire approaching the socio demographic variables and the treatment, the genogram and the ecomap as collection instruments. The data was organized in an EXCEL database and transported to an Epilnfo 3.5.1 (CDC, 2008) version and submitted to a descriptive analysis . RESULTS: Forty one carriers were interviewed. Most of them were single men. The social network support parts found were: the ambulatory room service, their jobs, family and 17 places visited by the carriers in town. The ambulatory service and jobs were not mentioned as an important point of the network. Family is the most mentioned institution and all of the interviewed people in the study have contact with their families. DISCUSSION: The research showed that falling sick gives cause for many limitations to the schizophrenia carrier, describing a fragile network based on family. These aspects must be considered by the groups that pay assistance in community based services. Despite these service limitations, the Psychiatric Reform has positive consequences. These people can stay in a place with a higher chance for satisfactory personal interaction. Even though the carriers have limits due to getting sick, they still can have a social network, sometimes smaller but one that usually contributes to their daily relationships. CONCLUSION: This research described the social network of the schizophrenic carrier that uses the ambulatory room service. The work is limited to only one mental health service however it was possible to achieve some important reflection on the progress obtained with the Psychiatric Reform and on the mental health group. The ecomap and genogram use were showed to be very useful in the research evolution. The instruments are easy to use and facilitate the interaction between the researcher and the attendees.

Study of an Epidemic Multiple Behavior Diffusion Model in a Resource Constrained Social Network

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: In contemporary society, sustainability and public well-being have been pressing challenges. Some of the important questions are:how can sustainable practices, such as reducing carbon emission, be encouraged? , How can a healthy lifestyle be maintained?Even though individuals are interested, they are unable to adopt these behaviors due to resource constraints. Developing a framework to enable cooperative behavior adoption and to sustain it for a long period of time is a major challenge. As a part of developing this framework, I am focusing on methods to understand behavior diffusion over time. Facilitating behavior diffusion with resource constraints in a large population is qualitatively different from promoting cooperation in small groups. Previous work in social sciences has derived conditions for sustainable cooperative behavior in small homogeneous groups. However, how groups of individuals having resource constraint co-operate over extended periods of time is not well understood, and is the focus of my thesis. I develop models to analyze behavior diffusion over time through the lens of epidemic models with the condition that individuals have resource constraint. I introduce an epidemic model SVRS ( Susceptible-Volatile-Recovered-Susceptible) to accommodate multiple behavior adoption. I investigate the longitudinal effects of behavior diffusion by varying different properties of an individual such as resources, threshold and cost of behavior adoption. I also consider how behavior adoption of an individual varies with her knowledge of global adoption. I evaluate my models on several synthetic topologies like complete regular graph, preferential attachment and small-world and make some interesting observations. Periodic injection of early adopters can help in boosting the spread of behaviors and sustain it for a longer period of time. Also, behavior propagation for the classical epidemic model SIRS (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible) does not continue for an infinite period of time as per conventional wisdom. One interesting future direction is to investigate how behavior adoption is affected when number of individuals in a network changes. The affects on behavior adoption when availability of behavior changes with time can also be examined. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Computer Science 2013

This research aimed to examine the central dynamic interaction between participants in a social network gamificada. Online social networks are a new phenomenon, but increasingly present in contemporary society, which has enabled new forms of interaction. Concurrent with the growth of online social networks, it also happens the spread and development of digital games. These two factors have led to the emergence of social networks gamificadas, which are permeated and formed social networks based on the logic and mechanics of the games. On social networks gamificadas there are few studies, demonstrating the need to undertake studies on the subject. Because Meira and Meira (2004) has asserted that the emergence of social networks and formatting may affect qualitatively and quantitatively the processes of social interaction. In theoretical terms, with the aim of analyzing aspects of this impact in social interactions, this research is grounded in two frameworks: 1 - In the socio-historical perspective of Vygotsky (2000) which emphasizes the importance of social interactions and environments in which these occur in the development of the human being; 2 - In the design language of hermeneutics of Gadamer (2000) explains that an understanding of the language through intersubjective elements, thus proposing a dialogical approach. This study is limited in a qualitative research perspective. We developed an understanding of the structural dimension of the dynamic interaction between participants in a social network gamificada. Therefore, it was used in the analysis of social networks within the model proposed by Melo (2007). Additionally it was investigated aspects of these interactions meanings produced through a hermeneutic analysis based on Gadamer (2000). Because, by encompassing these two dimensions of analysis, it is believed it was possible to build a proper understanding of the interaction dynamics. The results illustrate the specificities of interactions that take place within a social network gamificada, these specificities exist both within structural patterns observed when, as in the interactions when analyzing the contents that allowed semiotic see how the themes are very interactive game.

The preconized assistance model by the Psychiatric Reform introduces a mental health care strategies based on social reintegration of persons with mental disorders. In this sense, social networks become relevant because both can contribute to the subjects are not excluded because of their illness as they can play a significant role in managing the disease and suffering that follows from it. The social network analysis, from the individuals experience, may indicate how these networks contribute (or not) to the process of recovery of these people. Based on this assumption, this dissertation aimed to describe the social networks of people with schizophrenia in treatment in the CAPS of Campinas, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, and understand how such networks are experienced. To fulfill this objective, were used as transverse concepts - important to give direction to look at the empirical material ¿ Illness Experience and schizophrenia, from the perspective of psychopathological phenomenology, and how key concepts social network and recovery. For analysis of the narratives concerning social networks users with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, the reference framework of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, which is constituted of the following steps was used: naïve reading of narratives; discrimination of meaning units; condensation of meaning units and finally, a group of such units into categories according to the similarities of essential significance that have been expressed. Eight thematic categories were identified relating to bonds and types of interaction established by the research participants on their social networks: family, professional / health services, church / religious community; impersonal relationships and not commonplace, friendships, neighbors, animals; "positive withdrawal ". It was concluded from the narratives that the formation of social networks and relationships that users establish from them is variable and dynamic. Regarding the contribution of social networks to experience recovery, the narratives revealed that the networks are positive for recovery, if lived deeply with some capacity to provide hope, encouragement and support. A relationship or bond will be experienced positively if it is able to minimize or reframe a bad relationship or the relationship itself assuring him plasticity / Mestrado / Política, Planejamento e Gestão em Saúde / Mestra em Saúde Coletiva

Essays on Telecommunications Management: Understanding Consumer Switch, Search and Purchase Behaviors

Yang, Baojiang 01 May 2018 (has links)
Digitization has been pervasively reshaping the landscape of home-based telecommunication industries. The massive disruptive challenges call for telecom companies to react with efficient strategic managerial policies. Meanwhile, how consumer decision makings and welfare are impacted by such policies often remains complicated and non-transparent to policy makers. My thesis aims at leveraging large-scale empirical data to investigate the impacts of several prevalent firm initiated strategies on both sides of the market, i.e. consumers and firms. The thesis is comprised of three studies focusing on consumer switch, search and purchase behaviors. The first study, centering at consumer switching behaviors, investigates the impact of lock in shortening policies on both firm profits and consumer welfare in home-based telecommunication service market. Using household level data from a large telecommunications service provider, we show that a market level policy that shortens the lock-in period from the status quo can decrease the profits on the firms side more than it increases consumer surplus. This is majorly caused by the substantial acquisition costs associated with user switching and service initiation. As a result if regulators shorten lock-in periods but then firms respond by collaboratively increasing prices to recover their rate of return, the consumers, as the analyses indicate, may be worse off compared to the world in which lock-in periods do not change. Therefore lock-in reduction policy need to be paired with a policy precluding operators from increasing prices too much. The later two studies jointly examine consumer’s search and purchase behaviors in social environment. With a wide scope of services, telecommunication service providers can often leverage their knowledge on consumer’s social environment to reshape consumer choices. We aim to understand how consumers combine different sources of social information, one from friends versus one from the crowd, as a function of how close they are to the point of conversion. We developed a dynamic structural econometric model that jointly describes consumer information search and product purchase while taking into account sequential arrival of information and non-negligible search costs. The model is then instantiated on two connected yet distinct empirical contexts, where consumers shop for movies to watch on home screens. The first empirical context (discussed in the second study in this thesis) lies in an observational setting, where we studied individual level clickstream and transactional data from a Video-on- Demand service platform operated by a large telecommunication service provider. Later in the third study, we created an artificial movie market and leveraged a randomized web experiment to further study the research questions with more solid identification support. We find that, in both contexts, consumers seem to start by browsing products they heard about from friends. The popularity signals become more relevant when consumers getting closer to the point of purchase. The results have important managerial implications to online vendors by suggesting a reasonable strategy of providing the most valuable social information at the right time to enhance consumer shopping experiences.

Harnessing Social Networks for Social Awareness via Mobile Face Recognition

Bloess, Mark January 2013 (has links)
With more and more images being uploaded to social networks each day, the resources for identifying a large portion of the world are available. However the tools to harness and utilize this information are not sufficient. This thesis presents a system, called PhacePhinder, which can build a face database from a social network and have it accessible from mobile devices. Through combining existing technologies, this is made possible. It also makes use of a fusion probabilistic latent semantic analysis to determine strong connections between users and content. Using this information we can determine the most meaningful social connection to a recognized person, allowing us to inform the user of how they know the person being recognized. We conduct a series of offline and user tests to verify our results and compare them to existing algorithms. We show, that through combining a user’s friendship information as well as picture occurrence information, we can make stronger recommendations than based on friendship alone. We demonstrate a working prototype that can identify a face from a picture taken from a mobile phone, using a database derived from images gathered directly from a social network, and return a meaningful social connection to the recognized face.

Situating Adaptive Environmental Governance: Non-governmental Actors in the Protection of Nanjing’s Qinhuai River

Matthew, Gaudreau January 2013 (has links)
Studies of adaptive governance in social-ecological systems have identified common features that assist social actors in responding to environmental pressures. Among these features, multiple sources of ecological knowledge, trust, and networks between actors have been highlighted as properties that contribute to successful governance arrangements. However, studies in adaptive governance have also been critiqued using a political ecology approach. This is due to their under-theorization of political elements that can constrain or promote the formation of the features of adaptive governance. In particular, power dynamics between actors and the subsequent privileging of one source of knowledge over another might have an effect on governance arrangements. In China, environmental degradation is a serious issue. The Qinhuai River, located in the city of Nanjing, has experienced significant ecological decline over the last 30 years as urbanization pressures on the system increased. Over the same period, China has undergone changes in state-society relations, including allowing the formation of NGOs. Since the turn of the millennium, several NGOs have begun working on issues related to the Qinhuai River, including raising awareness and producing information on the environment. This study examines the features of adaptive governance in a critical light by situating them in the local political context of China. The relationship between NGOs, fishers who use the Qinhuai River and government are examined using Social Network Analysis and semi-structured interviews in order to understand the production of information, networking and trust between these actors. It is shown that the existing arrangements to include NGOs and fishers in the river’s governance activities are guided by a corporatist system of state-sanctioned representation. This is not conducive to adaptive governance arrangements, despite the increasing existence of ENGO networks and new sources of knowledge over the last decade. It is thus important that studies of adaptive governance take steps to contextualize their findings within the local political climate.

Využití dat ze sociálních sítí pro BI / The utilisation of social network data in BI

Linhart, Ondřej January 2014 (has links)
The thesis deals with the topic of social networks, particularly with the opportunities the utilisation of social network data can provide to an enterprise. The thesis is divided into two parts: The theoretical part contains definitions of the terms of data, information and knowledge, followed by descriptions of Business Intelligence and Big Data -- the two means of data analysis in an enterprise, and later by describing social networks themselves. The practical part contains an analysis of the data provided by social networks Facebook and Twitter, and at the same time defines the process of data extraction. The outcome of the analysis is a set of data that may possibly be obtained by the enterprise. This data is then used to determine the possible ways in which enterprises can leverage the data for their business. Finally data provided by Czech e shop is used to provide an example of how an entity can utilise social network data.
