Social networks in recently established human settlements in Grahamstown East/Rhini, South AfricaMukorombindo, Yeukai Chido January 2012 (has links)
This thesis attempts to understand the concepts of social capital and social networks within the South African government’s current policy on “human settlements”. It considers the association between social networks, social capital and social cohesion, community development and improved general quality of life. The thesis also explores the possibility and challenges of using social capital and social networks amongst low income urban communities as a viable strategy against poverty and for the development of sustainable human settlements. The thesis will examine the nature and form in which informal social networks function in a low income urban community in South Africa and the benefits that arise from these. The thesis particularly looked at informal social security networks in the form of savings clubs/stokvels and burial societies as well as other informal social networks such as religious associations and neighbourhood social support groups. The study discovered that in light of the high unemployment rate, high poverty levels and increasing urban economic pressures, most low income households cannot access or rely on social networks as a means of survival but on grants and wages. Social security networks are only accessible to those who can afford monthly membership contributions thereby excluding the poorest of the poor. For those who can afford to be members of social security networks, the benefits are limited and they do not adequately address household needs. The study also showed how those who cannot afford to be members of social security networks still have access to some sort of communal social support. Neighbours stand out as valuable in this regard. However, the casual neighbourhood support networks are not ‘resource rich’ mainly due to, the inability of people to donate and reciprocate. Religious networks are mainly identified with emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being, providing friendship, comfort and advice but these benefits are only provided to members only in their time of need. The theoretical understanding of social networks producing social capital which is seen as being beneficial to the poorest of the poor is questioned, as the results show the inequalities and divisions that exist within informal social networks themselves. On the other hand, all the social networks considered in this thesis have managed to contribute towards strengthening neighbourly relations, trust, building community identity and promoting values of ubuntu- sharing and caring for one another which in the long-run benefits the community, both members and non-members alike.

Online marketing communication tools used by guest houses in the Pretoria East RegionMarx, Nadia 03 April 2014 (has links)
Online marketing communication provides some of the cutting edge tools that can be used by guest houses to communicate their product and service offerings. The purpose of this study was to determine which online marketing communication tools can be used, and are in fact currently used by guest houses in Pretoria East. The results obtained from this study can assist guest house owner/managers in Pretoria East with decision-making on the communication of off-line and online marketing communication tools to be included in their marketing strategy. Primary data was collected by means of a survey with guest house owners/managers in Pretoria East. Specific corpographic details of guest houses in Pretoria East were identified. Furthermore, the most frequently used off-line and online marketing communication tools were identified, as well as the number of guest houses that have websites and the content of these websites. The findings suggest that guest houses in Pretoria East have to invest more time and money in implementing certain online marketing communication tools, such as social networking and use of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). By implementing online marketing communication tools like these, guest houses in Pretoria East could enhance customers‟ awareness of a guest house. This study verified the importance of electronic tools such as the Internet and Web as an integral part of an organisation‟s marketing strategy, specifically for small businesses in the service sector, such as guest houses. / Business Management / M. Rural migrants and their social networks in an urban setting : the case of Joe Slovo Park, Cape TownMongwe, Robert 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the nature and purpose of migrant social in
Marconi Beam Informal Settlement, and Joe Slovo Park. The study found that
migrant social networks served both economic and cultural functions. Through their
social networks migrants seek to maximise their remittances to their areas as well as
to convey information about the availability of jobs and housing conditions in the city.
Newly arrived migrants depend on their kin and village mates for food, shelter, and
sense of belonging in an environment that can otherwise be hostile. Similarly in
times of crisis such as redundancy, property losses migrants can call on the support
within their immediate area of residence or from other members based in their rural
areas of origin. Furthermore, migrants visit their rural areas of origin to partake in
marriages, initiation ceremonies, and funeral service. And many of the migrants who
die in the city are transported to the rural areas for burial. Migrant social networks
demonstrate the complex interconnectedness of the urban and rural spheres of life in
both the economic and cultural aspects of life. Daar is

Informal settlement upgrading and the effect of governmentality on women's social networks : a case study of New Rest and Makhaza, Cape TownMassey, Ruth Thokozile 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is estimated that 70% of sub-Saharan Africa’s urban population resides in informal settlements. Cape Town (South Africa), in particular, has a projected 223 informal settlements within its boundaries (which house almost 136 000 households). The national government has attempted to meet housing needs through the upgrading of informal settlements. In situ upgrading has been seen as a particularly popular route to follow. This study aimed to investigate the City of Cape Town’s governmentality in the in situ upgrading of Makhaza and New Rest in Cape Town and explore the implications of this governmentality for women’s social networks in these two settlements. The study focused on the governmentality elements of rationalities, practices and techniques and counter-conduct. A review of the literature shows little attention has been paid to the various governmentalities (practice, techniques and rationalities) that exist within informal settlement upgrading. The literature has also not paid much attention to how the governmentality of those undertaking informal settlement upgrading, relates to women’s social networks (and their governmentality) within upgraded sites.
The research made use of qualitatively-driven methodologies and approaches, employing the techniques of Neighbourhood Social Mapping, Social Network Assessment (SNA), semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, transect walks, observational studies and secondary data gathering. The study found, amongst other things, that the governmentality (rationalities, techniques and practices) used by the City to plan and implement the upgrading of informal settlements differs from that of the women’s social networks. The profound differences in governmentalities have meant that the settlements do not meet the needs of the women and their social networks. In response the women have redesigned their new settlement to meet the needs of their social networks. Integral Theory is used in this thesis to map and better understand the differing governmentalities and their relationship and was used to propose an Integral approach in managing differing governmentalities. The thesis suggests that, in order to understand fully and respond appropriately to the challenges faced in upgrading, those in power need to be aware of and include all perspectives and actors within their upgrading process and practice.

Students with disabilities' experiences of support and barriers to their development at Stellenbosch UniversityGreyling, Elsabe C. P. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / Since 1994 the South African government has been committed to the transformation of the
education system, including higher education. Higher education institutions have been
encouraged to include individuals representing groups that had been excluded on the
grounds of age, race, gender and, more specifically, students with disabilities. Within this
transformation process, some of the biggest challenges higher education institutions face
are policy changes, flexible curriculum delivery, alternative assessment procedures, the
physical accessibility of the campus and the provision of support services for students with
disabilities or special needs. Although policy development is an important stepping-stone,
the reality is that proper practice, adequate awareness, and positive attitudes are required to
effectively support and accommodate the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
The primary objective of this study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of how students
with disabilities experience support and barriers to their development at Stellenbosch
University. The study was also based upon the assumption that it is important to hear the
voices of students with disabilities before any recommendations in terms of the existing
strategy can be suggested. This study was conducted by means of qualitative research, and
the methods of data collection consisted of individual and focus group interviews as well as a
literature review. The research findings may be described as follows:
· Students with disabilities experienced both internal and external support and barrier
factors and processes that impacted on their development.
· Internal support and barrier factors and processes include emotional, behavioural,
beliefs, physical and cognitive aspects.
· External support and barrier factors and processes include peers, the faculty and
department, university accommodation, the classroom and the university.
· Four overarching themes that emerged from the data of the participants, namely
attitudes and awareness, communication, level of inclusion, and advocacy, were
outlined.
The findings of the study have important implications for the support practices and training of
academic staff and all role players at Stellenbosch University. Recommendations are also
made to improve support services and the campus climate at Stellenbosch University to
ultimately embrace diversity in order to offer an inclusive environment where the principles of
equal opportunities, full participation and non-discrimination are dear to the heart of all the
relevant role players involved in teaching, learning, service provision and policy making at
Stellenbosch University.

Social media in the newspaper newsroom : the professional use of Facebook and Twitter at Rapport and The Mail & GuardianJordaan, Marenet 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil) -- Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In a time of uncertainty for newspapers due in part to dwindling circulation, loss of
advertising revenue and declining readership, Internet-based technologies have continued to
grow. The unprecedented rise of social media, of which Facebook and Twitter are wellknown
examples, has not gone unnoticed by the newspaper community. Despite their initial
misgivings about the credibility of the information disseminated on these media, mainstream
journalists worldwide have gradually started to adopt social media as professional tools.
Social media serve as channels that help to funnel information towards journalists. Some
newspaper journalists also use these media to broadcast news and promote their personal
brands.
The continued use of social media on a professional level will arguably have an
impact on the daily routines and cultures within a newsroom. Academic research in this area
is limited, especially within the South African context. This study explores whether the
professional use of social media, with specific reference to Facebook and Twitter, influences
the processes and cultures of news selection and presentation at the South Africa newspapers
Rapport and the Mail & Guardian. A newsroom study within a social constructionism
paradigm employed a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies,
including self-administered questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and ethnography.
The main findings of this study were that the majority of journalists at Rapport and
the Mail & Guardian used Facebook and Twitter actively on a professional level – mainly for
trend tracking. The newsroom cultures were open and encouraging towards social media use.
Journalists were also aware that social media create opportunities for their audiences to
challenge the traditional roles of journalists and the realities constructed by the mainstream
media. According to the journalists from Rapport and the Mail & Guardian the professional
use of social media had not significantly altered their processes of news selection and
presentation.
joernaliste vloei.

Implementation of a facebook crawler for opinion monitoring and trend analysis purposes: a case study of government service delivery in DwesaMfenyana, Sinesihle Ignetious January 2014 (has links)
The Internet has shifted from the Web 1.0 era to the Web 2.0 era. In the contemporary era of web 2.0, the Internet is being used to build and reflect social relationships among people who share similar interests and activities. This is done through services such as Social Networking Sites (Facebook, Twitter etc.) and the web blogs. Currently, there is a very high usage of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) and blogs where people share their views, opinions, and thoughts. This leads to the production of a lot of data by people who post such content on SNSs. As a result, SNSs and blogs become the ideal platforms for opinion monitoring and the trend analysis. These SNSs and Blogs could be used by service providers for tracking what the public thinks or requires. The reason being, having such knowledge can help in decision making and future planning. If service providers can keep track of such views, opinions or thoughts with regard to the services they provide, they can better their understanding about the public or clients’ needs and improve the provision of relevant services. This research project presents a system prototype for performing opinion monitoring and trend analysis on Facebook. The proposed system crawl Facebook, indexes the data and provides user interface (UI) where end users can search and see the trending of a topics of their choice. The system prototype could also be used to check the trending topics without having to search. The main objective of this research project was to develop a framework that will contribute in improving the way government officials, companies or any service providers and normal citizens communicate regarding services they provide. This research project is premised on the conceptualization that if the government officials, companies or any service providers can keep track of the citizen’s opinions, views and thoughts with regards to services they provide it can help improve the delivery of such services. This research and the implementation of the trend analysis tool is undertaken in the context of the Siyakhula Living Lab (SLL), an Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD) intervention for Dwesa marginalized community.
