Cooperative enterprises as a solution to rural poverty and unemployment case studies of the Heiveld cooperative at Nieuwoudtville in the Northern Cape and Die Berg Vrugteverwerking at Piketberg in the Western Cape Province

Abrahams, Carl January 2009 (has links)
Masters in Public Administration - MPA / Historically, the poor have always been socially, politically and economically marginalized in society. The South African Government’s Cooperative Act 2005 presents a promising step in the right direction towards addressing poverty and unemployment in rural areas. The research looks at two case studies and site relevant findings. This study gives a brief introductory account of cooperatives with regard to their history and existence, particularly in South Africa. The research report focuses on two case studies, where the organisational structures and business operations will be examined and compared. Finally the report will draw lessons to indicate the possible social and economic viability of these cooperatives and their place in rural development. Based on the findings and conclusions, a number of recommendations are made on cooperatives in the rural sector. The research utilizes secondary data, such as documents, records, the internet, books and literature on the subject of cooperatives and related aspects of unemployment and poverty, forming a background of cooperatives in the South African rural sector. Primary data takes the form of structured (personal one on one) and semi-structured (group discussion) interviews. The primary and secondary data present the basis for the report findings and conclusions. Where possible, the relevant recommendations are made.

Spengler, Ana Cristina Aguiar 30 March 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-14T12:42:44Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 11232415 bytes, checksum: 1c66cf270d76532c9a556cb9ced8ce30 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The main objective of this research is to develop a theoretical discussion about the phenomenon of social (re)categorization and (de)legitimation of discourse, in which we take into account social, historical, cultural and cognitive aspects involved in the use of language in times of social conflict. Bearing this objective in mind, we base this study on, at least, three different fields of Linguistics, namely, Critical Discourse Analysis and its studies on (de)legitimation of discourse, Text Linguistics and its contribution with its studies on referentiation and Cognitive Linguistics and the theory of Idealized Cognitive Models. This integration of theories aims at investigating the way the personal pronoun forms of the subjective case turn it feasible to create and reflect the several social categories which may derive from the same pronoun. Besides, we also aim at investigating the role of this linguistic resource in the phenomenon of (de)legitimation of discourse. The socio-historical-cultural moment chosen to study these issues was the Civil Rights of the sixties in the United States of America. The corpus is composed of the speeches I have a dream by Martin Luther King, Jr. and The ballot or the bullet by Malcolm X. In our analysis, we investigate how the two leaders constructed their speeches around (de)legitimation of discourse and of social (re)categorization before the racial conflict the American society faced. We highlight the relation form-meaning established by the pronominal forms as cognitively motivated, lying on beliefs, values and world knowledge shared with and learned from other individuals within the socio-cultural context in which they are inserted.

Circles of Courage : music therapy with adolescents in conflict with the law at a community based setting

Lotter, Carol Barbara 23 February 2005 (has links)
The context for this study is a community based organization known as the National Youth Development Outreach (YDO) in Eersterust, Pretoria. This organization caters primarily for adolescents who are in conflict with the law who have been referred to YDO by the courts. YDO offers what is known as the Adolescent Development Programme as a means of social rehabilitation. This programme is based on what is known as the Circle of Courage which has its origins in the Native American approach to child rearing. This Circle of Courage has four components, namely, Belonging, Mastery, Independence and Generosity. Music therapy was introduced at the National Youth development Outreach in January 2003. My interest in the work of music therapy within this context gave rise to this dissertation. My aim in this study is to explore how music therapy can contribute to the Adolescent Development Programme and, in particular, how the Circle of Courage can inform the goals and practice of music therapy. In addition I wish to explore how music therapy practice needs to adapt in order to be relevant within such a context. The study is conducted within the qualitative research paradigm and thus seeks not to prove one single truth. This explorative study is conducted in a naturalistic setting. Data collection is in the form of a semi structured interview with 3 personnel members from the organization, clinical session notes and video recorded excerpts from two music therapy sessions. The clinical session notes form the basis of a description of the music therapy process at YDO from January to June 2003 and work with an individual client. These descriptions serve to contextualize the semi structured interview and video excerpts. The data are coded categorized and organized into themes. These themes highlight the social context in which YDO is situated which includes the individual, the organization and the community. The data highlights the primacy of the Circle of Courage within this specific context. Music as a tool for communication as well as a barometer of relationship is also discussed. This forms the basis for addressing the two research questions. This discussion focuses on the role of the Circle of Courage in informing the goals of music therapy through considering this at a conceptual level as well as viewing clinical improvisation through the lens of the Circle of Courage. The response to the second research question is from the premise of community therapy and considers the possibility of a wider application of music therapy in such a context. Music therapy is in its infancy in South Africa, especially with this client group. I am unaware of any published literature of music therapy work with adolescents in conflict with the law. Whilst this study has focused on a very small part of the whole, my hope is that it will stimulate further thinking and research about music therapy with this client group and will contribute to a broader body of knowledge. / Dissertation (MMus (Music Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Music / unrestricted
