Persons, Houses, and Material Possessions: Second Spanish Period St. Augustine Society

St. Augustine in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was a prosperous, multi-ethnic community that boasted trade connections throughout the Atlantic world. Shipping records demonstrate that St. Augustine had access to a wide variety of goods, giving residents choices in what they purchased, and allowing them to utilize their material possessions to display and reinforce their status. Likewise, their choice of residential design and location allowed them to make statements in regards to their place in the social order. St. Augustine was a unique city in the Spanish Empire; the realities of frontier living meant that inter-ethnic connection were common and often necessary for survival and social advancement. Inhabitants enjoyed a high degree of social mobility based on wealth rather than ethnicity or place of origin. Through entrepreneurship and hard work, many St. Augustinians took advantage of the city*s newfound prosperity and fluid social structure to better their economic and societal position. In sum, St. Augustine in the Second Spanish Period (1783-1821) was not a city in decay as the traditional historiography holds; rather, it was a vibrant community characterized by a frontier cosmopolitanism where genteel aspirations and local realities mixed to define the social order.

La enseñanza/aprendizaje de la energía en la educación tecnológica. Una ocasión privilegiada para el estudio de la situación de emergencia planetaria.

Esta investigación surge de la confluencia de dos problemáticas relevantes:· La que plantea la enseñanza/aprendizaje de la energía, uno de los núcleos básicos en todo currículo de educación científica y uno de los campos más investigados, debido a las dificultades de aprendizaje detectadas. · La centrada en la atención de la educación a la actual situación de emergencia planetaria, atendiendo al llamamiento de Naciones Unidas para que toda la educación contribuya a formar una ciudadanía consciente de los problemas a los que la humanidad ha de hacer frente y preparada para la necesaria toma de decisiones.Más precisamente, nuestra investigación tiene, en su origen, un propósito de innovación: convertir el estudio de la energía que se realiza en la educación tecnológica en ocasión para el tratamiento global de la actual situación de emergencia planetaria.Hemos pretendido así dar respuesta al llamamiento de Naciones Unidas y, al propio tiempo, satisfacer uno de los requisitos básicos para un aprendizaje significativo: la superación del habitual reduccionismo conceptual.La investigación ha estado al servicio de este proyecto de innovación, fundamentando las propuestas y procediendo a la puesta a prueba -mediante una pluralidad de diseños experimentales, en condiciones debidamente controladas- de dos hipótesis básicas:· Primera hipótesis. La enseñanza de la tecnología en secundaria, en general, no ha contemplado suficientemente hasta aquí el estudio de la situación del mundo como una de las problemáticas esenciales en la formación de los futuros ciudadanos y ciudadanas. Más concretamente, no se ha planteado la posibilidad de aprovechar el estudio de la energía que se incluye en los cursos de tecnología, para introducir de una forma funcional el tratamiento de situación.· Segunda hipótesis. Es posible introducir funcionalmente el estudio de la situación del mundo a partir de los temas dedicados a la energía en la educación tecnológica, convirtiendo su estudio en una ocasión privilegiada para que los alumnos adquieran una mejor percepción de la actual situación de emergencia planetaria, sus causas y posibles soluciones". Los resultados obtenidos mediante los diferentes diseños son coherentes entre sí y apoyan ambas hipótesis, mostrando: · La escasa atención prestada a la situación del mundo, tanto por los documentos oficiales, como por los manuales de tecnología o el profesorado, a la hora de plantear el tema de la energía. · La posibilidad de diseñar programas de actividades en torno a los recursos energéticos que incorporen funcionalmente, no de manera incidental, el tratamiento global de la situación de emergencia planetaria, sus causas y medidas necesarias para hacerle frente. · El uso de dicha unidad didáctica genera cambios profundos en la percepción de los estudiantes y profesores en formación acerca de la situación del mundo e incrementa su interés por la temática estudiada, contribuyendo a su formación como futuros ciudadanos que han de participar en la toma de decisiones para hacer posible un futuro sostenible.Las conclusiones de la investigación se acompañan del enunciado de sus perspectivas de continuación, realizando estudios similares para el tratamiento de la problemática de la situación del mundo en otros campos científicos. Nos mueve a ello el convencimiento de que la situación actual de emergencia planetaria requiere una atención constante y un compromiso activo que permita conectar la educación formal y no formal con las necesarias actuaciones tecnológicas, políticas y sociales para, conjuntamente, hacer posible un futuro sostenible. / This research was undertaken with the purpose of converting energy studies within technology education into an opportunity to tackle the current situation of planetary emergency.This paper is our response to the United Nations call for all those involved in education to contribute towards making citizens aware of the problems that humanity must face and prepare them for taking the necessary decisions, while also fulfilling one of the basic requisites for significant learning: to overcome traditional conceptual reductionism.The research carried out within this innovation project included elaborating well founded proposals before proceeding to test - by means of various experimental designs in a properly controlled environment - two basic hypotheses:· First hypothesis. Technology education has not considered the possibility of taking advantage of the energy studies included in technology courses, to tackle the situation of planetary emergency in a functional way.· Second hypothesis. The situation of the world can be incorporated in a functional manner, using the topics devoted to energy in technology education as a starting point, thus making classes an excellent opportunity for students to acquire a greater knowledge of the current situation of planetary emergency, its causes and possible solutions.The results obtained from a variety of experimental designs were both coherent when compared to each other and also upheld both hypotheses, indicating:· The possibility of designing activity programmes about energy resources that also functionally include a global picture of the situation of planetary emergency, its causes and the steps that need to be taken to confront it.· The use of such materials sparks marked changes in students' and teachers' perception of the situation of the world and increases their interest in the topic being studied, thus contributing to their training as future citizens who must take part in decision making to make a sustainable future possible.

Il lavoro prende parte al dibattito scientifico su quali siano le più corrette modalità di attuazione del concetto di "sviluppo sostenibile". Attraverso l'applicazione dell'approccio coevolutivo allo studio condotto a Santiago del Cile, abbiamo cercato di rispondere alle seguenti domande: 1) Quali sono i problemi ambientali locali e quali le relative ripercussioni sociali? 2) Quali sono gli strumenti a disposizione delle municipalità locali per risolverli? 3) Quali strumenti vengono realmente impiegati e quali le ripercussioni sociali del loro utilizzo? / The work takes part in the scientific debate about the most correct ways to affect the sustainable development concept. Through the coevolutive approach application to Santiago case (Chile) we tried to answer following questions: 1) what are local environmental problems and what are their social repercussions? 2) What are instruments in the local municipalities hands in order to resolve them? 3) Which instruments are really employed and what are social repercussions from their use?

The proposal of this regulation consisted in “adjusting the behavior” of the sugar-ethanol sector in face of a range of opposing arguments, especially in relation to the burning of cane fields in São Paulo, as brought up by public opinion. It was noticed that, strategically, this was not only a way of reverting the image of social-environmental degradation that is usually attributed to the production of sugarcane, but also such regulation would favor a diminishment of the criticisms raised against this sector. As so, the production of Ethanol was supported for it being a green type of fuel, but without fully breaking the logic of monoculture. The relationship between the State, the economy, the environment and society turned out to be fruitful to accomplish the goal of this research, which was to interpret the political construction of such protocol positioning the statements and absence of social groups and sectors that would be directly interested in the signing of such document. The hypothesis raised here, which was verified, is that the Protocolo Agroambiental would contribute to the maintenance of the burning of the cane fields in São Paulo. This investigation and its conclusions were possible through a methodology that favored a qualitative approach of social research, including bibliographical research, document analysis as well as a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with the main interest agents of this research. / A pesquisa em tela toma como objeto de estudo a construção política do Protocolo Agroambiental Paulista, uma regulamentação firmada pela UNICA e pelas Secretarias do Meio Ambiente e de Agricultura e Abastecimento do estado de São Paulo no ano de 2007. A proposta desta regulamentação consistiu em “ajustar a conduta” do setor sucroalcooleiro frente ao conjunto de argumentos contrários, principalmente à utilização da prática das queimadas nos canaviais paulistas, elaborado pela opinião pública. Verificou-se que, estrategicamente, mais do que uma tentativa de limpar a imagem de degradação socioambiental atribuída à produção canavieira, tal ajustamento permitiria, ainda, frear as críticas voltadas a esse setor. Com isso, dava-se respaldo à promoção do etanol enquanto um combustível verde com uma maior visibilidade em meio ao cenário de crise ambiental, mas sem, de fato, inverter por completo a lógica da monocultura. Nesses meandros, a relação entre Estado, economia, meio ambiente e sociedade mostrou-se fértil para cumprir o objetivo aqui elencado, qual seja, o de interpretar a construção política do referido protocolo, situando em seu constructo as expressões e as ausências dos grupos e setores sociais diretamente interessados em sua assinatura. Deste modo, a hipótese construída e que pôde ser verificada é a de que o Protocolo Agroambiental contribuiria para a manutenção da possibilidade da prática das queimadas nos canaviais paulistas. Esta investigação e suas conclusões foram possíveis por meio de uma metodologia que privilegiou a abordagem qualitativa de pesquisa social, partindo da pesquisa bibliográfica, além da pesquisa e da análise documental, bem como de entrevistas semiestruturadas com alguns dos agentes centrais de interesse da pesquisa.

In this sense, the present work understands the modern environmental issues as a social construction disputed through the production of discourses about the environment. Thus, it aims to comprehend the production of scientific discourses about Lobo/Broa dam, as well as its specific effects of power. Lobo/Broa dam, in São Paulo state, is a small reservoir for hydroelectric energy production, also used for recreation, and as a lab for research on ecology and hydraulic engineering. The research hypothesis lays on the idea that scientific discourse about the reservoir’s environment works as “truth”, exerting the effects of power associated with this condition. The methodology of the research consists in case study and qualitative methods of social research, including bibliographic and documentary research and semi-structured interviews. / A emergência da questão ambiental, a partir da década de 1960, representou mudanças significativas na maneira com que as sociedades percebem o meio ambiente, em especial através do processo de politização da natureza. Nesse sentido, a pesquisa em tela entende a moderna temática ambiental como uma construção social disputada a partir da produção de discursos sobre o meio ambiente. Assim, tem como objetivo compreender a produção de discursos científicos sobre a Represa do Lobo/Broa, bem como seus efeitos específicos de poder. A Represa do Lobo/Broa, localizada no interior de São Paulo, é um pequeno reservatório para produção de energia hidroelétrica, utilizado também para lazer e recreação, e como laboratório para pesquisas na área de Ecologia e Engenharia hidráulica. A hipótese da pesquisa se sustenta na ideia de que o discurso científico sobre o ambiente da represa funciona como “verdade”, exercendo os efeitos de poder associados à condição dessa classificação. A metodologia da pesquisa consiste no estudo de caso e métodos qualitativos de pesquisa social, dentre eles a pesquisa bibliográfica e documental e entrevistas semiestruturadas. / FAPESP: 2014/15607-0

Proofs of this are increasing initiatives in civil society organizations, private institutions and government actions, either local, state or national actions to promote environmental protection. The goal of this research is to contribute to the formation of citizens more aware of their responsibilities to sustainable development issues, simultaneously to their learning of physics in the secondary school. Thus, we have designed a research project that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the adoption of the concept of sustainable development as a central theme in physics classes in high school. From this goal, we designed, implemented and evaluate lesson plans that aim not only to construct and apply the concept of energy, but also to understand their transformations and conservation law, as well as their processes of production, distribution and consume in the context of physical laws in which it is involved. Then, it was deliberately provided to students, during classes, to read, interpret and produce texts, by this way being able to think and start to have a critical view of the world around him, as well as absorb the energy concept and understand his occurrence in phenomena of nature and in technologies. The approach used for this was that constraining science, technology, society and environment - STSE. This teaching methodology has been applied in the IFRN Ipangua?u campus, for students of two classes of first year of high school integrated course in agroecology and in technical computing. The survey results show the effectiveness of both methods with respect to the viewpoints of students in relation to the guidelines of sustainable development and the learning of physics content proposed. It is hoped with this dissertation to contribute to the formation of future men and women as citizens environmentally friendly, but also as a source of inspiration for teachers who wish to foster in its students such a critical position about civic education, from their classes / Nas ?ltimas d?cadas a humanidade vem se preocupando cada vez mais com os problemas ambientais. Prova disso s?o as iniciativas cada vez mais frequentes da sociedade civil organizada, das institui??es privadas e tamb?m do governo, seja ele municipal, estadual ou federal, em promover a??es em defesa do meio ambiente. O objetivo desta pesquisa ? contribuir para a forma??o de cidad?os mais criticamente conscientes de suas responsabilidades frente ?s quest?es do desenvolvimento sustent?vel, simultaneamente ? sua aprendizagem de f?sica no ensino m?dio. Dessa maneira, foi elaborado um projeto de pesquisa que tem o objetivo de avaliar a efic?cia da ado??o do conceito de desenvolvimento sustent?vel como eixo tem?tico nas aulas de f?sica no ensino m?dio. Da?, foram elaborados, implementados e avaliados planos de aulas que buscam n?o apenas construir e aplicar o conceito de energia, mas tamb?m compreender suas transforma??es e lei de conserva??o, bem como seus processos de produ??o, distribui??o e consumo no contexto das leis f?sicas em que est? envolvido.
