Postavení dětských vojáků v mezinárodním uprchlickém právu / The Status of Child Soldiers in International Refugee Law

Homolová, Veronika January 2019 (has links)
in English - The Status of Child Soldiers in International Refugee Law The main aim of this thesis is to investigate to what extent the international refugee law protects children who flee from armed forces recruitment. The chosen problem was solved using the question whether it is possible to grant a refugee status according to the 1951 Refugee Convention, or a status complementing the refugee status according to regional regulatory instruments, to a child who flees from armed forces recruitment. The conception of the refugee status was divided into constituent elements and it was considered whether children who flee from recruitment into armed forces and former child soldiers comply with attributes of these elements. The first examined element is the inclusion clause. In this part, the thesis examined the following questions: Is recruitment of children into armed forces and their use in hostilities a form of persecution? Can such children be considered a particular social group? Can rejection of participation in armed forces by such children be considered holding a political opinion? Is there a causal link between persecution and membership to a particular social group or between persecution and holding a political opinion in the context of children who flee from recruitment into armed forces?...

Svenska cybersoldater och traditionella krigarideal

Olsson, Johan January 2020 (has links)
There is a scholarly debate regarding in what ways traditional martial values are relevant for contemporary, technological military trades that in various aspects are different from traditional military professions. Some scholars argue that certain martial virtues and values, e.g. courage, loyalty, strength, and honour, occur in most military organisations and societies regardless of historical and cultural context. Others argue that as the characteristics of military operations change, so does what skills and virtues that are held desirable for soldiers. The purpose of this thesis was to contribute with insights on how Swedish cyber soldiers are represented in relation to traditional martial values within a Swedish context. This was achieved by conducting a qualitative text analysis using ideal types, reviewing material from the Swedish Armed Forces as well as Swedish newspapers. The main analytical results were that traditional martial values are only reflected to a limited extent in repre- sentations of Swedish cyber soldiers. The cyber soldiers were not explicitly portrayed as courageous, loyal, strong, nor honourable. Instead, they were primarily depicted as intelligent keyboard-warriors that are proficient in IT, which has little relation to traditional martial values.

Odraz války a pojem povinnosti a důstojnosti v básni A.L.Tennysona Útok lehké kavalerie v porovnání s vybranými básněmi První světové války / The reflection of war and notion of duty and dignity in A.L.Tennyson's The Charge of the Light Brigade in comparison with selected poems of The First World War

Lychman, Illia January 2020 (has links)
The main theme of this thesis is English war poetry. The thesis refers to two particular wars, the Crimean (1853-1856) and World War One (1914-1918), and analyzes their reflection in English poetry. By doing so, it compares the war poems from these periods and inspects the writers' messages behind them. The thesis aims to scrutinize how the depiction of war had changed through time, alongside with the reasons affected it. In terms of structure, the theoretical part describes the different contexts (historical, cultural, and literary) of the chosen poems, while the practical part features scrutiny of these works. KEY WORDS Poetry, soldier, duty, death, attitude, criticism, propaganda

Examining black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) composting for urban ag specialty crop production

Catherine Terrell (12322217) 03 May 2022 (has links)
<p>  </p> <p>Urban farmers face many unique challenges associated with the urban environment in which they produce. One of the most expensive and limited resources is access to healthy soils. There is often low organic matter and industrial contaminants present in urban soils, resulting in the need for remediation, such as capping and importing topsoil and compost. Recently, black soldier fly larvae (<em>Hermetia illucens; BSF)</em> have been recognized as an efficient organism used to break-down organic matter and produce a soil amendment comparable to traditional fertilizers. These fly larvae can feed on a wide range of organic waste (plant material, biosolids, food waste, etc.), can break down contaminants such as pharmaceuticals or pesticides, and impact the bioavailability of heavy metals. The resulting material is a digestate that can be applied as a soil amendment, much like the vermicomposting processes of worms. Fly pupae can be harvested and used as a nutrient dense feedstock for livestock or reared to adults to continue the cycle of composting.  Knowledge gaps remain regarding the impact of feedstock on the nutritional quality of the digestate for crop production and the application and implementation of BSF composting on-farm. We found that larval weight is unaffected by diet streams, however, larval length is improved on food waste streams. Additionally, crop growth varies when grown with BSFL digestate.</p>

Fabrication of nanomaterials from biomass for adsorption and antimicrobial applications

Uche, Cosmas Chinedu January 2020 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The Black soldier fly (BSF) is an environmentally friendly and sustainable insect utilised in the decomposition of organic waste. This is due to its voracious consumption capability, disruptive functions and economic importance. The sustained global increase in commercial BSF farming has resulted in an expanded waste generation from its carcases to which beneficial uses ought to be developed. This study focused on the beneficial use of the generated waste by extracting chitosan from waste pupae and commercially reared BSF adult carcases. The study also considered the conversion of the extracted chitosan to nanofibres and nanoparticles for application in adsorption of inorganic Pb2+ or Cd2+ and antimicrobial studies, respectively. To achieve the aim of this study, the optimal extraction conditions of chitin and chitosan from both pupal exuviae and adult BSF waste materials were attained after a series of experiments. The extraction process involved three stages which were demineralisation, deproteination and deacetylation. The extracted adult and pupal chitin and chitosan were characterised using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction studies (XRD), high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and solid-state carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR). Additionally, the adult (ACH20_9) and pupal (PCH21_9) chitosan samples, due to their solubility, were further characterised to determine their molecular weight, fat and water binding capacities, solubility and ash contents. / 2021-09-30

Cybersoldater under frammarsch : Är vi på rätt väg?

Andersson, Björn, Seger, Henrik January 2023 (has links)
Purpose - Just like society in general, the Swedish Armed Forces are increasingly digitizing their operations. It increases capability but increases the risks of cyberattacks. As one of several measures, the Swedish Armed Forces therefore introduced the Cyber Soldier personnel category. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the introduction of cyber soldiers has been handled within the Swedish Armed Forces' organization and in what way it has affected cyber defence capability. Design/methodology/approach - The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study where respondents from different organizational levels gave their views on the cyber soldier introduction. This by following the cyber soldier role from a life cycle perspective from the planning stage through the education and on to the career. Findings - The findings of the study shows that the strategy for building up cyber defence and the role of cyber soldiers are not sufficiently well communicated within the Armed Forces. The study shows that there is a need for a life cycle perspective for cyber soldiers' competence development that extends beyond conscription, which can be seen as a paradigm shift for how the Armed Forces normally train and handle war-deployed personnel.

Den kvinnliga Krigshjälten : En kvalitativ studie om den kvinnliga soldatrollen och deras relationen till Försvarsmakten / The female warrior hero : A qualitative study regarding the female soldiers role and there relation to Försvarsmakten

Berggren, Johan January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how female soldiers view their role as soldiers and what they perceive as good soldier qualities to see if it differentiates from the traditional view of what a soldier perceived as. The study will also deal with the female soldier’s perception of equality within the Swedish military. To gather empirical material the study has uses a qualitative method consisting of five semi structured interviews with the female soldiers. All respondents work in the same group as medic soldiers and are at the start of their soldier career. The theories that have been used to analyse the material gathered from the respondents are of hegemonic masculinity and critical vs gender neutral approach. Within hegemonic masculinity different archetypes exist in a hierarchy, for this study the archetypes have been stripped down to the warrior hero to fit the framework of the military organisation. The warrior hero will be used to analyse the respondents view of themselves as soldiers and the qualities that should be expected of a soldier. Critical vs gender neutral theory will be used to examen the responder’s relation to the organisation. The result for the study is that the view of the female soldiers differed in some aspects from the traditional view of the warrior hero. The respondents also had a joint view of the Swedish military as gender neutral.

Gauging Training Effectiveness of Virtual Environment Simulation Based Applications for an Infantry Soldier Training Task

Maxwell, Douglas 01 January 2015 (has links)
The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command*s Army Learning Concept 2015 and Army Training Concept 2025 are documents that discuss the need for an adaptive soldier learning model with a flexible training delivery methodology. The U.S. Army has been investing in serious gaming technology for the past two decades as a cost effective means to teach tactics and strategy. Today, the U.S. Army is seeking to expand its application of virtual environment training to areas such as cultural awareness and human network analysis for the infantry soldier. These new expanded applications will require a higher level of non-determinant behavior inside the virtual environment. To meet more of the training needs of the war fighter, the U.S. Army is looking beyond first person perspective games to the cooperative and social gaming experience offered by the MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) and the VWT (Virtual World Technology). Altogether, these classes of games have the potential to teach leadership skills, social acclimation skills, cultural awareness and practice skills, and critical thinking skills for problem solving in a cost effective manner. Unfortunately, even today there is a paucity of scientific research to support whether this potential may be realized or not. A literature review was performed which covers current concepts in the usage of virtual environments for military individual and team training in the U.S. Army infantry soldier domains. There are many variables involved with the lifecycle of the virtual training activity including the acquisition, information assurance and cyber security, deployment, proper employment, content development and maintenance, and retirement. This discussion goes beyond the traditional topics of graphics and game engine technology and delves deeper into concepts of the importance of proper usage of the environments by the trainees. This dissertation is composed of three studies with two subject pools: experienced soldiers and novice soldiers. The participants in the studies were randomly assigned to one of two training conditions. The training conditions were either a traditional slide-show in a classroom or a virtual environment based training system. The participants were then provided with training for a room clearing tasks in each of the conditions. The independent variables are training condition and soldier condition. The dependent variables are individual performance, team performance, stress questionnaire scores, and workload questionnaire scores. A number of relationships are explored in this dissertation. The first objective of these studies is to attempt to identify any effect the training conditions have on either individual performance or team performance. Lastly, these studies attempt to identify if there is any difference the training conditions have on novice versus experienced subjects* performance during a live assessment.
