Constructing a sophistication index as a method of market segmentation of commercial farming businesses in South Africa

Van Zyl, H.J.D. (Hendrik Jacobus Dion) 30 April 2013 (has links)
This study investigates the process of index construction as a means of measuring a hypothetical construct that can typically not be measured by a single question or item in a survey study and applying it as a method of market segmentation. The availability of incidental secondary data that were gathered during 2009 provides a relevant quantitative basis to illustrate this process by constructing a commercial farming sophistication index for South Africa. A multi-step approach was followed for the construction of the commercial farming sophistication index, namely: (1) Selection of items and definition of variables that are most likely to be indicators of commercial farming sophistication; (2) combining of variables into an index; and (3) segmentation and index validation. Following the investigation and illustration of the process of index construction as a method of market segmentation, it was evident that this approach offers an appropriate and useful means of segmenting a market. Several factors contribute to the appeal of this approach. Amongst other, it contributes towards addressing important priorities in the area of future segmentation research, namely that of investigating the application of new base variables into segmentation models, as well as investigating new segmentation strategies. The approach also applies a creative process of combining several base variables into a single measure, namely that of an index variable. By offering classification rules based on characteristics that can easily be observed or elicited by asking a few key questions, new or potential buyers can be grouped by buying behaviour segment. Furthermore, the multi-step process that was employed has pragmatic appeal for researcher, and provides a systematic and structured multivariate approach to segmentation. It also facilitates replication of the process when conducting future studies. By using an index, it takes advantage of any intensity structure that may exist among attributes. This has the advantage that it places members of the market on a continuum that can lead to tracking members’ development paths as they progress towards higher levels on the index. Furthermore, illustration of the process has significant application value in other business-to-business markets, locally and internationally, where index variables can be constructed from both primary and secondary sources and used as a method of segmentation following a similar multi-step approach proposed in this study. Lastly, the outcome of this type of segmentation method offers researchers and marketing practitioners a procedure, in the form of an equation, to calculate index scores and provide rules to segment the market based on predefined intervals. Hence, the challenge to replicate segment formation across independent future studies is addressed. This process is considered an advantage over employing a technique such as cluster analysis, where the use of new data or changes to the clustering algorithm often leads to different segment solutions. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Marketing Management / PhD / Unrestricted

Les déterminants de la transformation productive soutenable dans le contexte des chaînes de valeur globales : une application aux pays en développement / Drivers of sustainable productive transformation in the context of global value chains : an application to developing countries

Lectard, Pauline 08 December 2016 (has links)
The analysis we present in this dissertation emerges from a confrontation of the recent literature on structural change and the literature on global value chains. Productive transformation is almost exclusively analysed through exports transformation. However, the international fragmentation of production makes this export-based approach hazardous. The potential gap between factor content of exports and countries’ factor endowments imply that exports modernization may only be an illusion. We address the complex and multidimensional nature of structural change given the current economic context and we examine innovative determinants of structural transformation. We develop the idea of a sustainable structural transformation that we describe through aggregate indicators. The analysis of the determinants through descriptive and econometric methods reveals risks of lock-in situations as well as risks of immiserising specialisation in the industrialization process, specifically in the textile and electronic sectors. We also find that defying factor endowments encourages diversification towards sophisticated exports. However this transformation is unsustainable especially when countries are major FDI recipients. We show that FDI positively influences factor content of exports while they have a negative impact on factor endowments. Thus, a productive transformation generated through FDI does not imply factor accumulation. Finally, export sophistication seems to rely more on FDI rather than on capabilities accumulation, meaning that the sustainability dimension is essential in an export-based approach of structural transformation.

Essais sur l'investissement direct étranger, le transfert technologique et le commerce international : approches ricardiennes et analyses empiriques / Essays on foreign direct investment, technology transfer and international trade : ricardian approaches and empirical evidence

Saadi, Mohamed 19 October 2010 (has links)
Ricardo is commonly celebrated for the theoretical achievements -his theory of growth which introduces us to the concept of trap of industrialism and his theory of comparative advantage that introduces us to the idea that technological differences across countries is the basis of international trade. What role Ricardo's theories have given to foreign direct investment (FDI) has remained a less explored issue. Thus, it is certainly relevant to study the implications of FDI and technology transfer for these theories. This thesis puts back the Ricardian growth bottleneck and the Ricardian trade approaches toward FDI and technology transfer at the forefront of analysis, builds and develops new theoretical settings and predictions. Moreover, this thesis provides new empirical applications. This thesis consists of four chapters. Two parts emerge. In the first part, we mainly revisit and reformulate the Japanese economic thought toward outward FDI, within the Ricardian context. We also implement econometric estimation to test the relevance and usefulness of this theoretical approach to outward FDI from catching-up countries. In the second part, we provide theoretical frameworks with empirical applications. We focus on the effects of technological inflows, especially via inward FDI, on the developing receiving countries and we develop new Ricardian approaches with empirical follow-up on the predictions. In chapter 1, we focus on outward FDI as an escape response to home country growth bottlenecks, which represents an important but under-explored phenomenon in the FDI literature. We review the push-factor approaches based on the pressure effect of the “Ricardian bottlenecks” to explain outward FDI. We reconsider Ozawa's macroeconomic theory of outward FDI, extend it and argue for a widespread applicability of FDI aimed at overcoming generalized “Ricardian bottlenecks”, especially, nowadays, natural resource-scarcity and the insatiable quest for energy, industrial raw materials and fuels. Our empirical findings confirm that outward FDI from emerging countries and transition economies (catching-up countries) acts as an escape response from “Ricardian bottlenecks” and strengthen the reasonableness, the usefulness and the empirical robustness of Ozawa's macroeconomic theory of FDI.In chapter 2, we reformulate Kojima's correspondence principle within Ricardian setting and point out that OFDI originating from the comparatively disadvantaged industry in the developed country and going to the comparatively advantaged industry in the developing country should follow the direction of absolute profit rates which is a reflection of the comparative advantage patterns. In chapter 3, we mainly focus, in the first section, on the welfare effect of North-South technology transfer within Ricardian setting. We single out the respective role of the relative size of both countries, the efficiency of the technology which is transferred, and the elasticity of substitution between the goods which are produced. In the second section of chapter 3, we explore what are the consequences of free technology transfer, licensing and FDI on the North-South welfare. We also provide an empirical analysis of the effect of licensing and foreign presence on the developing countries' terms of trade. We find that inward FDI and royalties' payment deteriorate the terms of trade of the developing and emerging countries. In chapter 4, we combine an extended continuum Ricardian trade setting which rank sophistication of exports by their technology intensity with the new advanced wave of empirical literature on export sophistication. Using data from the developing and emerging countries, we test the core theoretical prediction that foreign involvement and export penetration facilitate technological progress and upgrades export sophistication of a country by leading it to expand the range of goods that it produces toward sectors with rising productivity. In our next step, we bring the debate on the deterioration of the developing countries' terms of trade back into the limelight. Importantly, we show that despite the increase in their export sophistication, the developing countries continue to face terms of trade deterioration.

Candidate-centered voting and political sophistication in Brazil 2002

Slosar, Mary Catherine 27 August 2010 (has links)
More and more, elections around the world seem to be won or lost on the basis of the candidates’ personal qualities rather than their policies. Despite its prevalence and consequences, we still know very little about what explains such candidate-centered voting, particularly in new democratic contexts. I argue that variation in candidate-centered voting is largely a function of political sophistication: voters with higher levels of political sophistication are better able to process information relating to policy and performance, which tends to be more cognitively demanding than information relating to candidate’s personalities. To test this argument, I estimate models of vote choice and electoral utility using survey data from the 2002 presidential election in Brazil. The results largely support my contention that political sophistication conditions the weight of candidate considerations relative to policy and performance considerations. / text

Walch, Martha Alexander 01 December 2017 (has links)

An investigation of Chinese apparel industry demand conditions: Gen-Y consumers as a competitive advantage

Hu, Yanan 22 August 2012 (has links)
China, as a leading apparel manufacturer and exporter in the world possesses significant market potential for growth because of its growing demand power. Given that low labor costs are increasingly no longer one of the competitive advantages held by Chinese apparel manufacturers, developing powerful and profitable globally recognized apparel brands may be the way to obtain sustainable success for firms in the Chinese apparel industry. Accordingly, Michael Porter’s The Competitive Advantage of Nations (1990) will be applied as a theoretical framework to discuss the competitiveness of a nation’s apparel industry. Brand management, satisfying exacting domestic demands, and stimulating marketing competition will be integrated. Using Porter’s theoretical foundation for demand conditions, a proposed model of fashion sophistication is introduced and a measurement survey utilizing Gen-Y Chinese fashion consumers is assessed. Furthermore, the research on Gen-Y consumers’ fashion sophistication discovered their specialized characteristics which represent exacting domestic demand for apparel products.

The impact of political sophistication on the use cognitive shortcuts: evidence from experiments and secondary data

Brusattin, Lorenzo 20 July 2012 (has links)
This research project assesses the role played by political sophistication in terms of itsimpact on the voters’ resort to cognitive shortcuts, with reference both to the consciousand non-conscious components of voting decisions. The investigation scrutinisesempirically the way both sophisticated and unsophisticated individuals make politicaljudgments when prompted with cognitive cues in three different settings. In each ofthem a specific type of cue impinges on the political judgment of individuals at adifferent level and leads to a specific decisional outcome. The overall findings castdoubts on the virtues of heuristic reasoning as effective remedy for voters who have tofind their bearings in the ballot box, but they also downplay the importance of politicalsophistication when visual or subliminal cues are involved in the decision.

Rubin, Luciane da Silva January 2012 (has links)
The Latin America and Caribbean region economic performance has characterized by the low per capita income in the last decades and by its high volatility, going away from income convergence in relation to more developed countries. Theoretical and empirical developmental approaches highlight the region’s failure to transform its productive and exporting structures to more dynamic products and sectors in the international market and, with more technological sophistication adapted to the region’s specificities. The external expertise of Latin America and the Caribbean is defined by the process of “primarization”, loss of share in worldwide commerce and by the low value-added, technological content, quality and internal rooting of its exportations which interfere in the development of capabilities and in using its potential to generate higher wages, occupation and income induced by external trade.Under a perspective of productive dynamics of agribusiness chains to integrate different sectors and actors and, the high potential to diversify and refine the regions exporting structure based on these products, this study aims at investigating the exporting structure evolution considering performance and refinement level of agribusiness product sets to Latin American and Caribbean countries. It also aims to research the multiplier effect on the region future growth and the production of agricultural income, product and occupation from 1992 to 2009. The methodological procedures to achieve the goals combine bibliographical temporal retrospective research technique to investigate relationship of causality phenomena on the characteristics and limitations of the countries from this specific region to transform and diversify its export basket and; a quantitative method through the use of statistic techniques to calculate the productivity index of agribusiness products and the revealed sophistication of this products at the considered countries. The same indexes were used byHausmann, Rodrikand Hwang (2005). Using multiple regressions, we also estimated the sophistication multiplier effect in the exporting set to economic growth and the countries well-fare. From the findings it is possible to say that: countries per capita income is related to the sophistication of agribusiness exporting product set; per capita GDP variation in these countries is determined, in some level, by its initial sophistication structure in exporting; The countries have been able to modify their structures along the time, specializing in products that are associated to higher income level (greater implicit production), they are achieving a greater multiplier effect to agricultural income, product and occupation but it is conditioned to internal rooting of productive activity and to the level of diversification in exports. Therefore, our findings support the hypothesis that the more sophisticated the agribusiness export products set and, the higher the integration between economic sectors and actors and its internal potentialities, the greater will be the effects in income growth and multiplier effect (overflow) on the economy of Latin America and Caribbean countries. Nevertheless, ceteris paribus, to export agribusiness products implicitly associated to a higher income level and a greater level of rooting of its internal capabilities constitutes an important strategy of accelerated growth based on exportation and in getting better well-fare levels to the region.
