This study addresses the effectiveness of communication between the team (doctors, sisters and social workers) and patients at the Breast Cancer Clinic of the Johannesburg Hospital. Tue needs of patients were highlighted, as well as the role of care-giver, both as a group and in their separate disciplines, in attempting to meet these needs. Tue empirical survey was carried out through the use of questionnaires as well as interview schedules. Patients, doctors, nurses and social workers were used as respondents. Results indicated that the majority of patients' needs for information and support were met by the team in general; however, a need for further social work intervention seemed to be apparent. In addition, several barriers were found to inhibit both team-patient and inter-team communication. Mental health outcomes and shared experiences of refugee and migrant women following exposure to xenophobic violence: a mixed methods studyWhite, Janine A. 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Disasters are global phenomena, often occurring without warning and with physical and psychological consequences among those affected. In May 2008, refugee and migrants living in South Africa were exposed to xenophobic violence, which may be described as a human caused disaster using the Shultz, Espinel et al. (2008) definition of disaster. Refugee and migrant women were particularly vulnerable during this time due to heightened risk for exposure to violence and pathology. During 2014, a mixed methods convergent study was conducted in Johannesburg to determine the presence of acute stress disorder symptoms (ASD), posttraumatic growth (PTG) and experiences of xenophobic violence among refugee and migrant women. One hundred and three refugee and migrant women completed a selfadministered questionnaire, while semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with a sub-set of 22 women.The quantitative results showed a positive, linear association between moderate ASD-total symptoms, as assessed by the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ) (Cardeña, Classen, Koopman, & Spiegel, 2014) and moderate
posttraumatic growth-total, assessed by the posttraumatic growth inventory (PTGI) (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996). All ASD symptom subscales were predictors of posttraumatic growth. The qualitative results from both the SASRQ open-ended responses and semi-structured responses showed that refugee and migrant women were adversely affected by the xenophobic violence, with a prevailing fear that the xenophobic violence would re-occur. There was convergence in the quantitative findings and the qualitative findings for the pathological and adaptive outcomes. Policymakers must address xenophobic violence by working towards prevention of this type of violence. In instances where policies fail to address or prevent xenophobic violence, disaster programmes should consider xenophobic violence in disaster planning. M.A. / South Africa is going through a transitional phase and urbanization, which among other things, has caused many families to resettle. The education system is no longer based on bilingualism with English and Afrikaans as the languages used in the senior primary phase. Our multicultural, multilingual society requires that children from different backgrounds be taught in the same classes. Schools in Eldorado Park have experienced an influx of learners with other mother tongues than English and Afrikaans into the schools. This influx has brought with it challenges for both learners and teachers. Teachers had to adapt their teaching methods to accommodate these challenges. Coupled with this is the rationalisation and redeployment process of teachers which is currently taking place. This has resulted in big classes with some catering for as many as fifty learners. Mother tongue speakers of African languages, with or without the necessary language background in English and Afrikaans, are admitted to the schools in different grades and find themselves in classes with learners who are fluent in English and Afrikaans. In this study some of the problems that teachers and learners experience are identified, the participation of parents in the education process is emphasised and the importance of language planning with regard to the child's medium of instruction and the school's first and second languages stressed. The research has touched on the implications of various aspects of language acquisition and learning (amongst other important findings). It was found that teachers need continual support from the government, the parents and the school's governing body.

This thesis interrogates the dynamics of urbanisation, gender and migration in
contemporary Johannesburg through the voices and images of migrant women
from the rest of the African continent, now living in Johannesburg. By revealing
the lives of a population group that is often hidden from view, it provides details
of women’s migration to Johannesburg, and their everyday encounters in the
host city. Using these experiences, it sheds light on contemporary migration and
urbanisation processes on the continent, expanding our knowledge of the contours
of power that shape urban life in Johannesburg and elsewhere.
Using the metaphor of the “border” or “borderlands” this thesis explores
how women negotiate, cross and remain “in between” the multiple physical,
social and imagined borders they encounter in the city. It finds that analyses that
read the city through class relationships and capital accumulation do not give
adequate weight to the multiple identities and forms of solidarity that exist in
cities. Women’s narratives reveal that while their class is an important identity,
other identities such as ethnicity, nationality and gender also powerfully shape
solidarity and modes of belonging in the city. Moreover, state-centric governance
frameworks that have dominated urban policy and scholarly work on the
continent are often blinded to the ways in which urban dweller’s actions shift our
understanding of the nature and character of state power. Women’s encounters
with the state reveal the multiple regimes of power that constitute the city, and the
ways in which these subvert, fragment, and yet at times reinforce state power in
unpredictable ways.
The epistemological approach and findings of this research bring to the
fore broader questions around the paradigmatic lenses used to read, interpret and
understand African cities. Dominant paradigms tend to draw on western models
of cities in ways that undermine African cities’ empirical realities and theoretical
potential. For as long as scholars and policy makers fail to see African urbanity in
its own terms rather than in relation to how cities elsewhere have evolved, we will
continue to miss critical socio-political and economic dynamics that are shaping

Recommendations included ongoing staff training to improve quality of health care and public

By gathering information from a volunteer sample of men who sleep with men (MSM) in
the Johannesburg inner city, the study aimed to discover those decisions and behaviour
that influence their health decision-making and health-seeking behaviour, particularly as
far as HIV and their sexual health was concerned.
Eleven in-depth interviews were conducted by three interviewers using a semistructured
interview guide which asked questions on demographics, health-seeking
behaviour, sexual orientations and behaviour, knowledge of HIV/AIDS and community
support.
During analysis, collected data was classified into the themes of access to health care,
personal and general MSM HIV risk perceptions, sexual behaviour, alcohol and
unprotected sex, prostitution, religion and stigma, violence and discrimination.
This study was the first qualitative study researching MSM in the Johannesburg inner
city and provides useful baseline information for further qualitative MSM studies in the

This study explores the influence of teacher unions on the formulation and implementation of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) in the Johannesburg Central District. The involvement of unions in the signing of Collective Agreement Number 8 of 2003 and the failure of unions to fully support implementation at school level is a challenge. Unions are part of the bargaining council in the Education and Labour Relations Council as they are also part of the policy formulation process. The constitutional duty that teachers need to align themselves with is to provide quality education that will allow learners fair and better opportunities of succeeding. The use of IQMS as a quality measurement system is of outmost importance to stabilise the education environment and to benefit the nation. Unions therefore have a statutory obligation not only to their constituencies but also to their clients, the teachers.
The study was qualitative and exploratory in nature, based on grounded and social constructivism theory. It was conducted in the Johannesburg Central region that forms part of the Gauteng Education Department. The sample consisted of groups of five union representatives, two Gauteng Department of Education officials and 35 school-based unionised teachers. The researcher used observation, one on one interview as well as focus group interviews to collect data. The unions involved in the study were the Suid Afrikaanse Onderwyseris Unie the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa and the South African Democratic Teachers’ Organisation .Findings showed a deficiency in processes such as advocacy, training and funding which are the main determinants of policy implementation. The unions were of the opinion that regardless of their role in the ELRC which some viewed as rubberstamping; their influence was not of much significance during the formulation of policies. They suggested a more rigorous and intense route that could give them the mandate to be hands on during the formulation of policies. They also reported that they needed qualified and competent people to spearhead training so as to ensure a better understanding by all stakeholders during the effective implementation of IQMS. / Educational Leadership and Management / D.
