In interviews with adoptive parents it was found that the crucial factor in the functioning of the family is the acceptance or rejection of the differences between families created by adoption and those created by childbirth. Rejection
hampers relationships within the family and renders it vulnerable to stress and enstrangement between parent and child. Acceptance on the other hand means that the parent recognises the need of the child to connect with his birth parents. This latter attitude results in improved relationships between parent and child
and in more effectiveness in coping with developmental crises. reklame in verbruikersgedrag betref, is die belewing van of houding-teenoor-reklame
konsepte van sentrale be lang. Aangesien die term bel ewing meer beskrywend is oor die
impak wat advertensies op verbruikers het word hierdie term algemeen gebruik. Hierdie
studie ondersoek die konsep advertensiewaardering en ontleed die invloed daarvan op
advertensiebelewing.
Die kyker-responsprofiel soos deur Schlinger (1979) ontwikkel, word algemeen gebruik
om televisiekykers se houding teenoor televisie-advertensies te meet.
Hierdie studie poog om die toepaslikheid en geldigheid van die kyker-responsprofiel
onder Suid-Afrikaanse televisiekykers te ondersoek. Die navorsingsmetode het uit twee
fases bestaan.
Die eerste fase was meer kwalitatief van aard, en ondersoek kykers se kognitiewe
struktuur van houding teenoor televisie-advertensies. Die teoretiese uitgangspunt tydens
hierdie fase is persoonlike-konstrukteorie. Repertoriumrooster onderhoude is met 50
volwasse televisiekykers (ouer as 16 jaar) uit verskillende taalgroepe gevoer. Daar is bevind dat kykers gemiddeld ses konstrukte gebruik ten einde die waarderingsvlak van
advertensies te bepaal. 313 Konstrukte is in totaal deur die 50 respondente ontlok.
Hierdie konstruke is deur individuele roosterontledings en ooreenkomsanalise tot 'n
aantal konstrukgroepe gereduseer. Beskrywings van konstrukgroepe is aan die hand van
n literatuurnavorsing gedoen. Die konstrukgroepe (tevredenheid, vermaaklikheid,
interessantheid, sosialiteit, duidelikheid, realiteit, tempo en emosialiteit) toon 'n mate van
ooreenstemming met die sewe Schlinger basisfaktore. Die onderliggende indiwiduele
konstrukte wat vermaaklikheid, sosialiteit tempo en interessantheid beskryf, toon hoe
korrelasies met waardering wat daarop dui dat waardering meer as net vermaaklikheid
behels.
Fase twee was meer kwantitatief van aard en het die ontleding van 382
kykerresponsprofiele behels. 'n Faktorontleding van die 32 Schlinger-items het sewe
basisfaktore tot gevolg. Die eerste vyf faktore (vermaaklikheid, verwarring, relevante
nuus, handelsmerkversterking en empatie) beskik oor soortgelyke faktorladings as
faktorontledings wat in die V.S.A. gedoen is. Hierdie bevinding dui daarop dat die
affektiewe belewingstruktuur van televisiekykers in Suid-Afrika grootliks dieselfde is as
kykers in die Verenigde State. Die ander twee faktore (familiariteit en vervreemding) se
ladings verskil van die in die Verenigde State maar hierdie verskille kan gegewe die aard
van die advertensies ( bestaande en nuwe advertensiekonsepte) en die kruiskulturele aard
van Suid-Afrikaanse kykers verklaar word. Die Schlingeritems is statisties beskryf en ontleed deur die rol wat die tipe advertensie (bestaande versus nuwe), produk-kategorie en kulturele teikenmark speel in waardering van advertensies te ondersoeK. Nuwe konsepte is geneig om meer vermaaklik en relevant
te wees. Zulu, Sotho en Xhose kykers is geneig om advertensies as meer positief te
beleef. Kosmetika en medisinale-, korporatiewe- en motoradvertensies is verder minder
vermaaklik as voedsel en handelsadvertensies.
Die Schlingeritems wat advertensiewaardering die beste beskryf en voorspel is bepaal
deur bondelontledings en meerdimensionele verskaling. Daar is gevind dat waardering
die mate waartoe 'n advertensie aan die vermaaklikheids, empatie en relevante nuus
doelwitte voldoen sonder om verwarrend, vervreemdend of oorbekend te wees.
Dit wil voorkom of daar twee dimensies bestaan wat die meeste variansie in
Schlingeritems verklaar naamlik waardering (positief of negatief) en relevansie.
Bondelontleding dui verder daarop dat 'n positiewe persepsie van 'n geadverteerde
handelsmerk kykers ontvanklik maak om meer van 'n advertensie te hou of te waardeer. / It is important that, given escalating cost considerations, marketing organisations
determine the effect that their marketing efforts have. With regard to the role of
advertising m consumer behaviour, attitude towards commercials is of utmost
importance. This study examined the liking of television advertisement concept and
analyses the effect of this concept on attitude towards television advertising.
The viewer response profile as developed by Schlinger (1979) is commonly used to
evaluate viewer's attitude towards television commercials. This study attempted to
investigate the applicability and validity of this instrument amongst South African
television viewers.
The study consisted of two phases. Phase one was more qualitative in nature and
investigated the viewer's cognitive structure of attitude towards television commercials.
The theoretical approach used during this phase was personal construct theory. It was
found that viewers on average use six constructs to evaluate whether they like or dislike
commercials. 313 Constructs were elicited and based on individual grid analyses and
correspondence analysis a reduced number of construct groups was identified. These construct groups ( contentness, entertainment, interesting, sociality, clearness,
reality, emotionality, and tempo) show a measure of similarity to the seven Schlinger
factors or dimensions. The individual constructs, which make up entertainment,
sociality, emotionality, tempo and interesting, show high levels of correlation with
advertisement liking. This finding suggests that advertisement liking involve more than
pure entertainment.
Phase two was more quantitative and consisted of analysing 382 viewer response
profiles. A factor analysis of the 32 items, which make up the viewer response profile,
resulted in seven factors. The first five factors (entertainment, confusion, relevant news,
brand reinforcement and empathy) show similar factor loading to factor analytical studies
done in the United State of America. The other two factors (familiarity and alienation)
show different loading to the United States of America study but these differences could
be explained given the nature of commercials tested (existing commercials and new
commercial concepts) and the cross cultural nature of South African viewers.
The Schlinger items were analysed in greater detail by investigating the role which type
of commercial (existing versus new), product category and cultural target market play in
liking of commercials.
New concepts are proven to be more entertaining, creative and relevant. Zulu and Sotho
viewers are likely to be more positively disposed towards television commercials while
cosmetic, medicine, corporate and motor vehicle commercials are less entertaining than
food and commercial commercials. Those Schlinger items, which best describe and predict commercials liking were
determined by using cluster and multi dimensional scaling techniques.
It is apparent from this analysis that likability is the extent to which the objective of
entertainment, empathy or relevant news is achieved without confusion, alienation or
familiarity. Cluster analysis furthermore suggests that a positive perception of an
advertised brand predispose viewers to higher levels of commercial liking. Multi
dimensional scaling suggest two dimensions explaining most of the Schlinger factor

Murder, rape, corruption and gang wars, sounds like something out of a bad movie but for many it is their way of life and not a movie they can stop. Many people today live with the constant threat of attack and the threat is often not by some stranger but someone they know, their neighbour, their uncle, their father, their domestic worker and on occasion even their own mother. As crime escalates more people are asking the question,"Why this rapid increase in crime and why is there such an increase in the number of violent crimes?" South Africa is well known, unfortunately, for its high crime rate and in particular it's exceptionally high violent crime rate. South Africa is rated in the top 10 for the highest murders per capita (UNDOC 2011). Over the past 20 years the number of violent crimes has progressively increased and the reason for this increase needs to be examined. there appears to be a rapid increase in the number of people presenting personality disorders in society. A number of studies have been conducted on the etiology of anti-social personality disorder and on psychopathology. In the past the majority of these studies had been conducted in developed countries and in the past few years a number of studies have started to be conducted in developing countries. Although very interesting with great insight very few have tried to examined any trends and differences between developed and developing countries. During the course of these studies it has been observed that inmates and people exhibiting Psychopathy traits are more likely to commit violent crimes and in addition reoffend. The thesis proposed examines trends between developed and developing countries to find any links between crime and psychopathology and in addition the etiology, prevalence and prevention of psychopathology. The study will identify a number of models utilised to understand violence in society and personality disorders with particular reference to psychopathy. The study is being done in order to obtain a better understanding of a link between psychopathology and escalating crime in South Africa and what, if anything can be done to decrease this prevelance. This thesis outlines a number of diagnostic tools utilised in order to determine if a person is indeed suffering from psychopathy. Each one of these is discussed and the validity of each considered for both developed and developing countries as a diagnostic tool. Developing and evaluating a coaching program to improve safety leadershipEsterhuizen, Wika 11 1900 (has links)
Legislators are placing increased pressure on mining companies to improve their
safety performance. The importance of safety leadership is highlighted by its role in
safety culture and improving safety performance. The aim of this study was to
develop and evaluate the impact of a coaching program on safety leadership.
The main constructs namely safety culture, safety leadership and coaching was
conceptualised along the humanistic paradigm, with theoretical definitions and
models. In this study, safety culture is employees’ shared attitudes, beliefs,
perceptions and values about safety that affect their behaviour in the workplace.
Safety leadership is the interpersonal influence that a leader exercises to achieve
the organisation’s safety performance goals. Coaching is an interpersonal
interaction that aims to improve individual performance through increased selfawareness
and action plans. A theoretical model was developed to explain the
elements that constitute effective safety leadership. A coaching program was
developed based on executive coaching and leadership development principles.
The empirical investigation was conducted in an organisation in the South African
mining industry. A nested mixed methods design was followed. In the quantitative
study, a 360 degree survey was employed to assess the ratings of a purposive
sample (n=54) along eight dimensions before and after the coaching. Data was
analysed with descriptive and inferential analysis. Results showed statistically
significant improvements on accountability, collaboration, and feedback and
recognition after the coaching. The results reflected differences in 360 degree
ratings according to gender, race, job level, age and geographical location. The
most significant improvements were for females, Africans, management, age 51-60
years, and site 2.
In the qualitative study, a semi-structured interview was employed to study four
cases to investigate managers’ personal experiences and changes in attitude
toward safety. Data was analysed utilising thematic analysis. The findings revealed
that coaching was a positive experience and contributed to changing managers’
attitudes toward safety.
The research added to the field of organisational behaviour by presenting a
theoretical model that enhances the understanding of safety leadership, the
development of a coaching program and providing empirical evidence that the
principles of coaching and leadership development can be applied to improve

Text in English / The primary aim of this study is to explore and describe experiences of peer helpers at an Open Distance Learning institution since the start of their joining the Unisa Peer Help Volunteer Programme. This study was conducted with the intention of granting the peer helpers an opportunity to reflect on their individual experiences and in so doing in laying the foundation for future studies, intended to steer the Unisa peer help volunteer programme to new frontiers, while simultaneously highlighting the contribution that has been made by the Unisa Peer Help Voluntary Programme. An intrinsic case study design has been utilised in order to gain comprehensive insight into peer helpers’ experiences. A sample of seven peer helpers were interviewed using the semi-structured interview technique. The main findings from this study can be categorised into four distinctive themes namely: (a) the peer helpers’ goals for joining the Unisa Peer Help Volunteer Programme; (b) construction of roles as peer helpers at an open distance learning institution; (c) positive experiences of participating in the Unisa peer help volunteer programme; and (d) the negative experiences of participating in the Unisa Peer Help Volunteer Programme. Promoting student success by tapping into the resilience of the at-risk student : a South African higher education perspectiveVan Vuuren, Nicolene 11 1900 (has links)
Throughput rates and student retention are a burning concern that all higher education institutions share, as student dropout rates remain high. Promoting student academic success has become imperative. This study is concerned with students who display innate resilience and overcome adversities in their personal lives, but fail to demonstrate resilience when it comes to being academically successful.
The objective of this study was to explore: (1) the personal resilience in at-risk students who overcome adversities in their personal lives, but fail to demonstrate resilience when it comes to being academically successful and (2) how their personal resilience can be tapped into to promote academic success.
A mixed methods approach was used, employing both quantitative and qualitative methods. At-risk students at a particular higher education institution were identified using their study records. From these students a subgroup of resilient students were selected by means of a resilience questionnaire. This group completed a pre-interview questionnaire, resulting in 10 students being selected on the grounds of being information rich cases of the at-risk resilient student. Through the process of social constructivism and dialogue between the researcher and the participants, themes were identified and analysed using an inductive data analysis style. The data was finally linked to supportive literature.
The primary finding was that the same protective factors that can assist a student in developing innate resilience, can also cause the student to be placed academically at- risk. The study further revealed, that if the environment in which students find themselves does not allow them to negotiate for resources, these students' innate resilience alone cannot assist them to overcome the challenges of higher education.
The researcher concludes that higher education institutions in their attempts to retain and assist students should be encouraged to tap into students’ innate resilience to develop their academic resilience / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

The African philosophical concept of Ubuntu as applied to the Emotional Intelligence of adolescents : challenging the appropriateness of Western-derived conceptsMankowitz, Debra J. 11 1900 (has links)
The study assessed the Emotional Intelligence/Ubuntu understanding in sixteen learners aged 11-14 from both the Low SES and High SES levels, which includes the peri- urban/disadvantaged/informal settlements and the urban/privileged areas.
The research motivated towards the conception that an inclusive Eurocentric and African approach towards education could benefit South African adolescent learners emotionally, socially and academically. Notwithstanding, providing an Emotional Intelligence framework that includes tenets of the African Philosophical paradigm of Ubuntu could enable adolescent learners to feel more empowered when confronting their socio- economic challenges. Hence, the purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the lack of formal EI/Ubuntu skills training in schools leaves learners without the competences to surmount the many challenges adolescents face during the turbulent phase of early adolescence. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of EI in a sample of adolescents from both SES levels. Qualitative methods were used in order to ascertain the impact of Western and Ubuntu epistemologies/worldviews on the adolescent learners’ Emotional Intelligence. This study also sought to determine the impact of education and role models on this sample of adolescent learners' EI/Ubuntu levels. This research also investigated how the merged EI/Ubuntu concepts can be incorporated into a life skills programme aimed at enhancing EI/Ubuntu in South African adolescent learners. In this study both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using the convergent parallel mixed method study and the paradigms that informed the study includes pragmatism, interpretivism, positivism and post-positivism. The objectives of this study includes identifying the emotional needs and EI status of adolescent learners and to investigate to what extent these are being met in the current educational system in South Africa.
The research noted the contextual factors that influence EI in adolescent learners. The research explored how adolescents align their behaviour with the values and virtues of EI and Ubuntu. The following tools were used to accomplish the aforementioned objectives; a short introduction to Ubuntu, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Adolescent Short Form (TEIQue-ASF) questionnaire was utilised to obtain a measure of the individual learner’s EI. A biographical questionnaire was given to all learners in order to establish what contextual factors impact on EI/Ubuntu consciousness. An Ubuntu style
10-item questionnaire to obtain insight into individual learners’ conceptualisation of EI. A short paragraph of approximately 300 words allowed for the narrative of each learner to be explored and a 22-item semi-structured parent/teacher interview from both SES groups. Role-playing scenarios were enacted to assess the depth of EI through the identification and understanding that took place between the players and draw a person diagrams (DAP) were utilised and assessed for EI aspects such as self-esteem, levels of confidence and awareness of self. The most pertinent aspects that were revealed by this study was that Low SES learners, especially those that lived in corrugated housing felt a sense of helplessness, fear and social alienation when challenged by their extreme living conditions. The study also revealed that the High SES group struggled at forming meaningful relationships and felt panicked and stressed regarding their academic responsibilities and outcomes. Learners' aggressive behaviour in secondary school: a psycho-social perspectiveGasa, Velisiwe Goldencia 30 June 2005 (has links)
This study was undertaken to determine the extent of aggressive behaviour exhibited by secondary school learners.
Many factors were considered when investigating the problem of aggressive behaviour. The problem was traced from the theorists' perspectives and factors related to the family, school and community. An extensive literature review showed that the above factors contribute to aggressive behaviour among adolescents.
In order to support or reject the findings of the literature study, quantitative (questionnaire) research and qualitative research (interviews) were conducted. The results of the quantitative research concerning learners' aggressive behaviour in secondary schools were analysed and interpreted while at the same time a deeper understanding of aggressive behaviour was revealed through qualitative research.
The results of the empirical research indicated that the more negative the family climate, school climate, community climate or influence of friends are, or the more negative the emotional self-concept of the adolescent is, the more aggressive the adolescent is, and vice versa. An exploration on the criminal capacity of child offenders with psychiatric disordersGeoffrey, Leandre Christina 28 November 2018 (has links)
The aim of this explorative study is to establish if psychiatric disorders influence the criminal capacity of child offenders. A qualitative approach was adopted in the study to develop an in-depth understanding of the issues pertaining to criminal capacity assessments for child offenders with psychiatric disorders. The risks associated with various psychiatric disorders in relation to childhood criminality, and the methods that are used to deal with child offenders who suffer from psychiatric disorders, were also explored.
The data collection tool for this study was a semi-structured interview schedule. Telephonic and face-to-face interviews were conducted with child justice and mental health experts from four provinces in South Africa, namely, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. These experts included psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, academic professors of law, a criminologist and an advocate. Snowball sampling was employed and although this is a pure qualitative study, the open coding, axial coding and selective coding process from the grounded theory was applied to analyse and interpret the data.
The findings from this study indicate that psychiatric disorders are a risk factor associated with the causation of criminal behaviour. A high prevalence of psychiatric disorders, such as intellectual disability, learning disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, were generally found in children in conflict with the law. The influence and consequences of these psychiatric disorders, in conjunction with environmental and societal factors, were found to influence criminal behaviour and were highlighted as factors that ought to be taken into consideration when determining the criminal capacity of a child who is in conflict with the law.
Findings from the study identified that adequate recognition was not granted to the influence of a psychiatric disorder in the assessment of a child‟s criminal capacity. It was established that, in the criminal capacity assessment, the emphasis should not be on the psychiatric disorder per se, but on the effect that the disorder and associated symptoms may have on the child‟s ability to distinguish between the wrongfulness of their actions and to act in accordance with this understanding.
Operational challenges and ambiguities identified in the legislative framework pertaining to child offenders with psychiatric disorders were found to negatively influence criminal capacity assessments for children in conflict with the law. The lack of services available to child offenders with psychiatric disorders, as well as child offenders without psychiatric disorders, was found to hamper the best interest of the children in conflict with the law. Lastly, legislative and service recommendations for good practice to deal with child offenders with psychiatric disorder were identified by the experts. / Criminology and Security Science / M.A. (Criminology)
