An exploration of a narrative pastoral approach to improve the lives of female teachers in the South African contextStapelberg, Liezel January 2017 (has links)
This Qualitative research investigated and explored using a Narrative approach with teachers to find ways to improve the quality of teachers’ lives through the use of stories in Pastoral Counselling. A small group of teachers from a local primary school were invited to share their stories as a means to explore care and support actions for other teachers in the South African context. Statistics seem to point to a crisis in the South African education system, especially regarding the well-being of teachers. Various factors contribute to this including issues of diversity in the teaching context and challenges posed by inclusive education. It is my belief that a Narrative approach can assist Practical Theology to make a significant contribution towards helping struggling teachers nurture resilience and create more meaningful lives.
Narrative Inquiry, a relatively new Qualitative methodology, was used to study the teachers’ experiences. This required a “collaboration between researcher and participants” which happened over time, in a particular context (Beaumont Primary School in Somerset West) and in social interactions with the research participants: a small group of teachers from Beaumont Primary School. African and South African views were investigated. Data collection methods included: interviewing; attentive listening; and observation, through which stories (data) was collected from the focus group.
After analysing and interpreting the research data, an integrated Narrative Pastoral model was constructed which could assist Practical Theology and Pastoral Counselling to better equip teachers to deal with the challenges they are facing. It is hoped that this model will ultimately help the teachers involved in this research project to grow into integrated, whole (quality) beings who can make a difference where they work and live. Text in English / While intergenerational transmission of trauma has been widely studied, there is a paucity of literature on intergenerational humiliation. Furthermore, humiliation is regarded as a significant feature of transgenerational transmission of trauma and revenge production. Therefore, the present study aimed to contribute to addressing this paucity and to explore and understand intergenerational humiliation as experienced by 20 children and grandchildren of victims of apartheid-era gross human rights violations. Conceptually, historical trauma theory framed the study. A hermeneutic phenomenological methodology was used to achieve the aims. Through purposive-criterion sampling, data was collected and analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Results show that the consequences of intergenerational humiliation are varied as feelings of hurt and loss perpetuate through the generations. Although positive influences counter these feelings within a generation, they remain alive in memories. The impact of mindfulness and self-consciousness on adjustment and academic performance : a study of South African first-year studentsSetshedi, Refilwe Wilhemina 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This study was designed to determine whether a relationship exists between self-reported
mindfulness, self-consciousness, adjustment and academic performance in first-year
university students. Additionally, the study aimed to assess the predictive quality of
mindfulness and self-consciousness towards emotional adjustment (adjustment disorder
symptoms, depression and anxiety) and academic performance, and to further determine the contribution of mindfulness and self-consciousness on adjustment to the predictability of academic performance. First-year students (N = 290) at the Tshwane University of
Technology (TUT) at the Pretoria West and Ga-Rankuwa campuses completed the selfreported mindfulness measure, Mindfulness Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS) (Brown & Ryan, 2003), the Self Consciousness Scale- Revised (SCS-R) (Scheier & Carver, 1985), the Beck Depression Scale (BDI) (Beck et al., 1961) the Beck Anxiety Scale (BAI) Beck & Steer,1993) and the adjustment disorder checklist; based on DSM V, (Sadock, Sadock & Ruiz, 2014). Students’ year-end results for the first year of study were used to operationalize academic performance. Results of correlation analyses indicated a significant negative correlation between mindfulness and students’ emotional adjustment (adjustment disorder symptoms, depression and anxiety), a significant positive correlation between selfconsciousness and students’ emotional adjustment (adjustment disorder symptoms, depression and anxiety) as well as a significant negative correlation between adjustment disorder symptoms and academic performance. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to test whether mindfulness and self-consciousness significantly predicted students’ depression, anxiety and adjustment disorder symptoms. The results of the regression analysis indicated the two predictors explained 16% of the variance (F (1, 1773) = 29.66, P< 0.0001) (depression), 14% of the variance (F (1, 985) = 24.14, p < 0.0001) (anxiety) and 14% of variance (F (2, 292) = 23.87, p <0.001) (adjustment disorder symptoms). Furthermore, mediation analysis provided information regarding the impact of mindfulness and selfconsciousness on students’ academic performance. The impact of mindfulness and selfconsciousness on students’ academic performance (students’ marks) was found to be mediated by adjustment disorder symptoms. However, the Sobel test indicated a significant effect (0.03) for mindfulness and an insignificant effect (0.09) for self-consciousness. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

Street children are present in every metropolitan city around the world. Their
presence has provoked varied responses from academics, the media and others. However, despite the
proliferation of responses, current solutions are not always commensurate with the resources
expended in this area. Are current responses
a part of the problem or a part of the solution? Following the precedence established by other
researchers and calls for greater reflexivity, this study attempts to provide a critical analysis
of selected South African writings on and about street children. Particular focus is accorded to
how selected academic and popular writings construct street children. The specific aim is to
facilitate an examination of the underlying discourses that inform South African writings on street
children. The role that academic and popular writings fulfil in selectively maintaining the status
quo over which their authors sometimes voice disapproval is also examined. Wherever possible the
origins of such discourses and the powers that maintain them are referred to. The extent to which
the discourses evident in writings on South African street children converge with the dominant
discourses present in developmental psychology as a whole are reviewed.
The complimentary techniques of transformative inquiry and discourse analysis are at the heart of
the methodology in this study. As an analytical tool discourse analysis is used to deepen current
understanding of perceptions of street children. Discourse analysis helps to chart the underlying
discourses drawn on in texts and shows how writings have influenced, intentionally or otherwise,
the perceptions of subjects of research. Transformative enquiry as a significant ·
complimentary, albeit implicit, feature of discourse analysis enables a reflection on the research
process itself.
Four main discourses are discussed, each of which is centred around several sub-discourses. The
first discourse, "He who pays the piper calls the tune" involves an objectification of street
children, conveying negative' images of street children. The second discourse, "St. Jude the Patron
Saint of Lost Causes" is rooted in the ideas of hopelessness, helplessness, victimology and
ubiquitousness. The third discourse, "natured versus nurtured" is located in ideas of biological
determinism within which street children are described as bestial, abnormally sexual, inherently
racially inferior and unresponsive to initiatives designed to provide shelter for them. The fourth
discourse, "Us and them cum us against them" arises from ideas that view street children as
inherently different to mainstream children and adults, thereby pitting street children against
society at large and representing them as enemies. These four interrelated discourses ultimately
converge to produce both enabling and constraining effects that are sometimes contradictory in
nature. Discourses intended to render street children visible sometimes ironically make them and
their plight invisible. The study is concluded with discussions of methodological limitations,
suggestions for future

The aim of the study was to determine the impact of transformational leadership styles of managers on subordinates' job satisfaction, in a steel and mining company.
Leadership was conceptualised from the trait, behavioural, contingency and neocharismatic theories. Job satisfaction was derived from content and process theories.The literature highlighted leadership and job satisfaction theories, the changing context of leadership and research of both transformational leadership and job satisfaction.
The study was exploratory and a random sample (N=126) was used. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used to measure transformational leadership and the Job Satisfaction Survey was used to measure subordinate job satisfaction.
The results indicated that there was a significant impact of transformational leadership styles of managers on subordinates' job satisfaction, more specifically, in terms of fringe
benefits and pay dimensions of job satisfaction, as well as the biographical variable, age.
Future research may include transformational leadership styles and other variables such as performance and productivity in the steel and mining industry

These children encounter difficulty adapting to normal scholastic challenges and their performance often appear marginalised. The objective of this study is to explore the phenomenon of stress experienced by three eleven year old learners with learning restraints in the intermediate phase.
The literature study on this topic has shown that learning restraints not only affect a child scholastically, but in his entire being. Based on this understanding, learning restraints may cause stress due to habitual underachievement in the learning environment. These learners might not necessarily have extremely poor cognitive abilities, but perceive themselves as incompetent or "dumb".
In the empirical study, projection techniques were mainly utilised to determine stress levels experienced by learning restrained learners, from their internal frame of reference. Despite the feminisation of the workplace as one of the key developments of this domain, the meaning of work for women is little understood. A phenomenological approach was adopted in this study to gain in-depth understanding of the meaning ascribed to work by a sample of ten South African, women graduates. Literature was used to generate three models - a male-centred, stereotyped and contemporary conceptualisation. Unstructured interviews were conducted and the protocols analysed using the modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method (Creswell, 1998; Stones, 1985; 1986). Themes illustrated that the meaning of work for women is multifaceted and comprises a number of components including sense of identity and self-worth, meeting instrumental needs, social relatedness, serving others, intrinsic satisfaction and the exercise of power and authority. Findings suggested that the meaning women ascribe to work changes when they experience autonomy. Treating gambling addiction : a psychological study in the South African contextBulwer, Miranda 06 1900 (has links)
The objectives of this study were to provide a detailed biopsychosocial description of the characteristics of a sample of 100 individuals screened and referred by the National Responsible Gaming Programme helpline for their outpatient treatment programme over an eighteen month period, and, importantly, to measure the success of this specific treatment programme at set intervals, up to a one year follow-up period. While 80% of the sample did not relapse during the six-week treatment programme, the number of treatment seekers without any gambling relapses during each follow-up period declined, and those falling back into gambling increased as time went on. After one year 47% of treatment seekers managed not to revert back to gambling – total abstinence. A further 28% reported having relapsed once or twice or that their gambling was controlled. 25% of treatment seekers reported that they reverted back to gambling fulltime which leaves the success rate of the treatment at 75%. Treatment seekers reported an overall reduction in gambling participation, debt and expenditure and an overall improvement in social and vocational functioning. There is evidence in this study to support the perspective that pathological gambling is a multidimensional disorder and that certain sub-groups of gamblers have distinct gambling behaviour. / Psychology / M.Soc.Sc.

Rekindling hope: deconstructing religious power discourses in the lives of Afrikaans womenViljoen, Hester Josephina Isabella 30 June 2003 (has links)
This qualitative action research was activated at the junction between three
sites of operation of modern power: the site of the woman in the family,
religious and cultural power discourses and the professional discourses of
therapy. Using an action research design for this study focused the research
on reaping benefits in real terms for the research participants. The researcher
applied a postStructuralist, feminist and narrative approach to the
phenomenon of failed personhood as manifested in the lives of two White
Afrikaans women. Narrative therapy methodologiElS, steeped in a religious
studies ethic were valuable guides on the therapy-as-research journeys,
ensuring the exposure and deconstruction of dominant cultural and religious
power discourses.
In the course of the therapeutic and research journeys, various narrative
therapy methodologies were used with positive effect on the life world of the
participants. These methodologies included the externalisation of problems
and the discovery of unique outcomes that constitute alternative, preferred life
stories that contradict problem-saturated life stories of failed personhood. The
research participants engaged in individual and communal conversations, relanguaging
their self-narratives and religious narratives as part of the coconstruction
of their preferred identities of moral agency and hope.
Support networks were created for the research participants, Mara and Grace,
to strengthen their new self- and religious narratives and to dislodge the
power of the normative cultural and religious discourses of rugged
individualism. In one instance, the researcher incorporated the healing power
of South African bush veld, by inviting a group of women on a series of
expeditions into the wilderness as part of Mara's journey. fn Grace's
narrative, we utilised the modern technologies of the internet to connect her
with a virtual response team and the Anti-Anorexia/Anti-Bulimia League.
Storytelling and reflecting conversations formed the basis of the therapy-asresearch
processes. The research participants extended therapy
conversations beyond the therapy room, by actively participating in their
therapy-as-research journeys. In line with narrative approaches, the
researcher encouraged them to honour their skills and knowledges on their
journeys: Mara extended her therapy by making resistance quilts while Grace

For decades there has been growing interest into the crime of child murders. Emphasis was placed on victims and those at risk. Not much focus was placed on perpetrators and their families. Evidence suggests that the family and social systems play a vital role in determining adult violent behaviour. This qualitative study aims to explore the experiences of convicted child murderers in their family and social system. Data was collected and analysed, using genogram interviews and analysis. Themes were highlighted using hermeneutic thematic analysis, within a post-modern paradigm. Results were presented in the form of genogram analysis and thematic content analysis. Prominent themes that arose were separation, rejection, abuse, neglect and substance abuse. These life experiences together with poor education are some of the characteristics that may have contributed to the child murderers actions towards children. / Psychology / M. A.
