Disputed state, contested nation : republic and nation in interwar Catalonia

Harty, Siobhán. January 1998 (has links)
Explanations of sub-state nationalism that draw on the effects of patterns of uneven economic development suffer from two conceptual problems: (1) they fail to explain why state actors are not able to adopt and implement long-term strategies to correct these effects and (2) they fail to account for the range of ideologies that can be used by sub-state actors to mobilize against the state. In this dissertation, I use an institutional analysis to overcome these problems by specifying the structural conditions under which a range of counterhegemonic groups can emerge to challenge state nationalism. The analysis is applied to a case study of interwar Catalonia, which examines three separate campaigns for political autonomy. 1906--1908; 1917--1919; and 1930--1932. Two modes of analysis are used. First, an institutional analysis is used to determine the structural conditions for the emergence of counterhegemonic movements. I argue that levels of institutional incorporation in a state can determine both the conditions under which a counterhegemonic group can emerge and the range of ideologies that can be used to organize against the state. Institutional incorporation refers to the variable level of institutions that together constitute the corporate structure of the state. The institutional analysis is applied to Southern Europe generally and Spain specifically, in order to identify the political groups in early twentieth-century Catalonia which challenged state nationalism by mobilizing around alternative state projects. Second, a rational actor approach is used to examine the strategic interactions of two sets of political actors in Catalonia, nationalists and republicans, in order to specify the conditions under which they attempted to gain political power and obtain political autonomy for Catalonia on three separate occasions. The combination of an institutional approach at the macro-level and a rational actor approach at the micro-level brings to light the importan

O bimilenário de Augusto na Espanha (1939-1940) : construções discursivas do franquismo sobre a Antiguidade romana / The Bimillennium Augustus in Spain (1939-1940) : the discursive constructions of francoism on the Roman antiquity

This research proposal is inserted in current issue in the branch of History and Archaeology about the ancient world, which is, the study of the moderns appropriations of the antiquity. A subjectivist reaction follows to an alleged historical knowledge objectivity, which put in the center of any vision its author, who eventually interferes directly in the production's content. Thus, the antiquity, as research field, become to be problematized by an analytical bias that not conceives itself, but taking into account their own interpretative traditions, and linked to different interests and historical moments. In this perspective, form and thematic standpoint, the research seeks to comprehend the utilization of references form roman world by the Franco government in Spain. More specifically, it analyses the events which occurred around the commemoration of two thousandth anniversary of Augustus, in the cities of Tarragona and Zaragoza, in the years of 1939 and 1940, respectively. These events takes a great historical importance when the studies about the government of Augustus get intensified and himself is taking as a model of governor to be followed. Is tried, so, understand the role of History and Archaeology in this period, as well its discursive disposition, in an attempt to understand the ancient world in a more problematic view, considering the reading made of it, which is inserted and marked by this time / Mestrado / Historia / Mestre em História

Historical Memory and Ethics in Spanish Narrative

Wilson, Rachelle 12 1900 (has links)
This study traces the current status of Spanish ethics as seen through the optics of historical memory. Starting from the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the thesis relates contemporary themes to their proposed origin throughout three additional distinctive eras of the 20th and 21st century in Spain: 1982-1996 (Socialist Spain), 1997-2010 (Post-modern Spain), and 2011-present (current Spain). Spanish narratives ranging from Los Abel by Matute, La magnitud de la tragedia by Monzó, "Fidelidad" of Ha dejado de llover by Barba and Las fosas de Franco by Silva are contextualized through their ethical architecture, in accordance with their socio-political context, and relationship to past historical traumas. This work proposes that the themes of anticlericalism, the pursuit of social equality, anti bureaucracy, and political distrust are trends culminating from Kohlberg's third level of morality. The thesis aims to be an exposition and legitimization of different ethical schemas that might otherwise be polarized as wrong and inferior by others.

January 2011 (has links)
