The Multigenerational Development of Oklahoma City's African American Community as an Urban Ethnic Enclave

Ritt-Coulter, Edith Mae 07 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the history and importance of Oklahoma City's Black Ethnic Enclave. It focuses on how this community developed over generations and the role of its leaders in shaping its identity, despite facing segregation. The settlement in this region began in 1889 when unassigned lands in central Indian Territory were opened for homesteaders by the US government. As a result, Oklahoma City became one of the major towns and eventually the state's capital. Most historical accounts primarily focus on the viewpoint of the white founders of the city, ignoring the experiences of minority residents and the urban aspects of the city. This study takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining historical analysis, urban studies, and sociocultural perspectives. It aims to understand the complex relationship between racial dynamics, urban development, and identity formation. By thoroughly examining primary and secondary sources like archival records, oral histories, and scholarly literature, the research uncovers the struggles, achievements, and cultural contributions of the community builders who overcame systemic barriers to create a thriving enclave within Oklahoma City. By highlighting their stories, this research enriches our understanding of the city's history and the diverse urban experiences it encompasses.

Understanding informal segregation : racial and spatial identities among the Indian minority of Mokopane

Shaker, Sahba January 2010 (has links)
South Africa is a melting pot and a meeting place for a multitude of "races", representing an optimal arena for understanding the psychology of contact and desegregation. This study focuses on the spatial arrangement of minority identities, through continued informal segregation, among the Indian minority of Mokopane. Drawing on 28 open-ended interviews, segregation is explored in everyday interactions and spaces. Working within a spatial-discursive framework, critical discourse analysis is employed, paired with a basic observational and descriptive analysis. Participants' discursive constructions overwhelmingly demonstrate patterns of informal segregation among the Indian minority community, within the micro-ecology of contact. Caught within a sandwiched or "buffer" identity, issues of space constantly inform negotiating conceptions of "Indianness". In mapping the dialogue of the Indian community, a story of the evolution of segregation emerges, creating a replication of internal divisions. This study ultimately demonstrates the need for a spatial-discursive orientation and a more "embodied" turn in our understanding of segregation.

A Praça, a Rua... a TV de Rua: Usos do Espaço, Permanências do Lugar / The square, the street... The street TV: uses of space, permanence\'s place

Ferreira, Genovan Pessoa de Morais 02 December 1999 (has links)
In a world in frank process of homogenization with the mundialization promoted by capital, having as support communication systems or, rather than, non-communication systems, incorporating all the planet, how to understand the (re)emergence of local values, particularly, those related to spatial identity? Whereas the social relations continue although involving an increasing degree the electronic mediations being exercised in and through the space, what necessarily implies its use? What explains the construction of the spatial identity? And what defines its own reaffirmation into the dilution promoted by the mundialization process? Our study sought to make this analysis in Morro da Conceição, peripheral neighborhood of Recife pursuing two ways: the first, seeks to identify, by analyzing the uses of space, the survival of life of relations that characterize the place as well as the contents that shaped them historically. In this part, the accent is on the analysis of spatial practices, that, based on the prevalence of use values, promoting the identification of residents with what we define place. The second tries to associate the discussion about the role that the mainstream media has as a producer of non-communication and therefore as a source of dilution of life relations, particularly relations between people from a material base, practical-sensitive, with the counterpoint of the alternative media, and so-called street TVs, whose dimension of public space, such as the square and the street, is envisioned for these TVs as assertiveness a communicative process based on interpersonal relationships; at the meeting; at the party; in uses of space not absorbed by the exchange. It is through the specific experience of the TV VIVA in Morro da Conceição that we will seek analysis elements that associate it with the role of strengthening of identity and maintenance of the place.

Fashioning spatial identity: a work environment and showroom for a fashion marketer with Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius Syndrome: Düsseldorf, Germany

Brunel, Celeste 24 September 2007 (has links)
This study looks at human movement in order to formulate a principle that can potentially enrich the understanding of interior design and spatial awareness within it. It considers the spatial identity of the dis/abled body by looking at the importance of the embodied experience in relation to environment. The body has dynamic abilities; therefore it is an instrument for creating form. This tangible form in context with interior design can inform our understanding of spatial needs and be used as a design-informing tool. Specifically this project uses spatial identity as a theory to guide the conceptual ideas and as a practical tool to design a work environment and showroom for a client with Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius (TAR) syndrome. / October 2007

La réprésentation du Néguev dans le discours public en Israël : de la conquête du désert au développement durable / The representation of the Negev in the public discourse in Israel : from the conquest of the desert to sustainable development

Derimian, Ilanit 05 July 2014 (has links)
The Negev desert occupies most of the territory of the State of Israel, having a strategic importance for the existence of the "center" and at the same time it is considered as a natural wild “periphery”. This region has a symbolic value with different charges, positive and negative. It is considered as a spiritual space where the Hebrew people were constituted, but it is also associated with the exile which threatens the continuation of the nation existence. Since the 1920s, there was a tendency to "conquer" the desert and "flourish" it. Nevertheless, since the 1980s, the tendency is to develop it according to ecological values, while preserving its natural character. The research is situated in the field of ecocriticism, which examines the relationship between man and his environment in the postcolonial era. It is in this framework that the impact of hierarchical oppositions, including culture versus nature, development versus conservation and center versus periphery, are being studied. The representations of the desert in the public discourse are examined in the light of these oppositions, since the 1940s to the present, through texts analysis of: the media (press, television and internet); development programs established by the State; and Hebrew literature. The study shows how as a result of the decline in the status of collectivism in Israeli society, as part of globalization processes, increases the ability of social groups to influence the construction of spatial identity of the Negev desert.

Rumslig identitetskris?

Clefberg, Sofie January 2017 (has links)

Význam grafických symbolů v procesu formování regionu: příklad Libereckého kraje / The Importance of Graphical Symbols in the Region Formation Process: the Case of the Liberec Region

Šifta, Miroslav January 2014 (has links)
The Importance of Graphical Symbols in the Region Formation Process: the Case of the Liberec Region The thesis analyzes the role of symbols and graphic symbolism in the process of regional and spatial identity formation in the context of the theory of institutionalization of regions by A. Paasi. The goal of the thesis is to contribute to a scientific discussion of this topic using the example of a specific region - the Liberec Region. In the theoretical part of the thesis, general studies of spatial identities, mainly with regard to creating the symbolic shape of region, are discussed, and the importance of symbolism in forming the region, its spatial identity and power relations is assessed. This section aims to define the key concepts, terms and also types of symbols used in this study. In the research part of thesis, first, the selection of the studied area is justified (region with intensively changed landscape), and, second, its situational analysis is presented, focusing mainly on the social phenomena and elements which could play role of regional symbols. Next, the actual symbolism of the region, as presented in various sources and media, is evaluated. Subsequently, it is compared with the graphic symbols of regional and local institutions, classified and analyzed according to the form...
