Urbanismo esportivo na América do Sul: ordem, espetáculo e operações imobiliárias (1920-1955) / Sport urbanism in South America: order, spectacle and real estate operations (1920-1955)

Millan Valdes, Rodrigo Luis 13 May 2019 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the sport and leisure facilities\' production in three important South American cities, during the 1920-1955 period, when the practice of physical activities and sport was on the rise. This process started during the first decades of the 20th century, when stadia, gymnasia, swimming pools, sporting clubs, velodromes, playgrounds, and other sport facilities within schools and university campuses were often erected by public and/or private agents. That was a time when local and international sporting events were also institutionalized as a part of the urban entertainment offer. Focused on key episodes of the urban history of Montevideo, Santiago and São Paulo, this dissertation tests the following hypothesis: the development of sport and leisure facilities was the result of the combined action of different agents, through the conformation of new practices, policies and institutions. Sport urbanism was guided by four main agendas: the growth of a sport spectacle industry; the incorporation of sport and physical education to heart policies and the education curriculum; the development of nationalist narratives that related sports, fitness and patriotism; and the idea of public and private agents who understood sport facilities as part of major real estate business opportunities. This work demonstrates how the development of sport facilities was the combined result of opposing social forces, mobilized by diverse agendas, interests and theoretical references. Those narratives, originated in various professional fields, such as politics, education, medicine, journalism, engineering, architecture and urbanism; were fundamental in the definition of sport facilities as social needs, drafting public policies to encourage their planning and building, and taking part in the debates about their location, financing strategies and final uses.

Lyf [TAAL] Sport + Development

Van Wyk, Johannes Francois 27 November 2012 (has links)
This project is a response to the author's passion for sport and his curiosity about the architectural process that is necessary to understand and facilitate the inter-relation of body, mind and soul. The potential influence of physical exercise; its correlation with the metaphysical aspects of the individual and how its influence spills over into the larger context of society is investigated. This dissertation attempts to form an architectural response that is indigenous to the local population, the climate and the existing urban condition and ranges from a thorough understanding of the community to the effective contribution that architecture can offer, based on the concept of ‘Sport for Development’ programmes in South Africa. The primary objective of the architectural response is to amplify the potential of sport as a means to peace building and self-actualization within a society that suffers from the effects of crime and violence. Although popular culture believes in the positive potential of sport, Ramon Spaaij identifies factors and conditions that must be met if the positive value of sport is to be enjoyed. The dissertation incorporates these factors and conditions into a multipurpose 'Sport for Development' community complex. This complex aims to augment the existing sport for development programmes in South Africa and serve as a prototype for future sport for development centres that ultimately includes everyone in the process of reconciliation. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / unrestricted

Morejon Torné, Maria Sacrament 19 January 2011 (has links)
In this Doctoral Thesis, research has been conducted on tennis club facilities in Catalonia, with the aim of determining some design guidelines. Given the peculiarity of this type of sports facility, which due to its non-multisport character has been left out of the Xarxa Bàsica (Basic Network) specified and studied by the Generalitat de Catalunya, then we believe it is necessary to begin this study and provide some considerations for their conception and design. It is important to point out that we intend to study these facilities with the complexity with which we usually find them, that is to say, with a heterogeneous distribution in the territory and made up of sports, complementary and auxiliary spaces. The theoretical base has provided a review of concepts surrounding the sports space and their historical evolution, their urban planning and the sociological aspects. Later, and going into the methodological foundations, applied research has been carried out because the concepts, collected and reviewed in the theoretical framework have been applied in the specific reality of the tennis courts, and in Catalonia. To carry out this part, we have developed proposals for geographical and territorial analysis, searching for the reasons for the current heterogeneous distribution of tennis courts and determining territorial deficits through the implementation of existing planning tools. The use of these tools has facilitated the review of the descriptive and classifying parameters of sports facilities and it has allowed us to determine which of these parameters are definable from design and to be applied in the case of tennis courts. This was the starting point for the creation of an instrument to observe and study specific sports spaces (tennis courts) in the organisational reality that we normally find in our country (clubs). Applying this to a representative sample of clubs, we search for the values of the analysis model which on the one hand make possible the approach to understanding the object of study, and on the other hand, to know, with the interrelation of its indicators, the values that provide greater suitability for the design in each level of observation.

Sport jako veřejná služba: Sociální spravedlnost a efektivnost sportovních zařízení v obcích / Sport as a Public Service: Equity and Efficiency of Local Sport Facilities

Popelka, Jakub January 2015 (has links)
Title: Sport as a Public Service: Equity and Efficiency of Local Sport Facilities In the Czech Republic, clubs traditionally played a key role in providing sport facilities. In recent years, the role of local authorities in sport has strengthened. Hence, there have been changes in the management of sport facilities in the context of new trends in public administration and sport participation. The thesis analyzes and evaluates current modes of provision of public sport facilities as the consequence of these changes. The examined issue is narrowed down to the two theoretical concepts - sport equity and efficiency of sport facilities. These are perceived as a part of the performance of sport facilities (see Liu et al., 2009 or Kung and Taylor, 2010). The first part of the thesis aims to test the effect of different forms of management of sports facilities on the sport equity score in the framework of institutional analysis (Houlihan, 2005). On the basis of the original instrument for measuring of sport equity, the survey is carried out. The research sample (N = 193) is made up by the municipalities with extended powers, except for regional cities and Prague. The second part of the thesis has the character of an action research. The author evaluates the application of the NBS: Financial questionnaire...
