The Relationship between remorse and offering forgiveness: selected case studies from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Kobe, Sindiswa Lerato January 2014 (has links)
Magister Theologiae - MTh / This study investigates three case studies, namely, the “Pepco Three”, the “St James Church incident”, and the “Gugulethu Seven incident” from the perspective of ongoing reflections on the nature of reconciliation in the sub-discipline of Systematic Theology. The research problem that is investigated in this project is: What role did visible signs of remorse (or its absence) play in the willingness or unwillingness of victims (or their close relatives) to offer forgiveness to the perpetrators of gross violations of human rights related to the three cases studies mentioned from the amnesty hearings of the South African Truth and Reconciliation commission, namely the “Pepco Three” the “St James Church massacre incident”, the “Gugulethu Seven”. In each case study, the crucial question that will be asked is whether the victims or their relatives understand forgiveness as something that is conditional and part of a longer process of reconciliation, or whether they understand forgiveness as something that can be offered unconditionally. The research draws on some standard theological literature with specific reference to literature on the concepts of reconciliation, forgiveness and remorse emerging in the aftermath of the South African TRC. This is followed by a description and critical analysis of the three identified case studies. In each case, I listened to the recordings, read the transcriptions, and considered the available secondary material on the case studies.

No. of bitstreams: 1 CRISTIANE SOUSA SANTOS.pdf: 1319771 bytes, checksum: 7f30a6f7759360aa8057ca4b00edffc7 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-28 / This dissertation has as main objective to deal with the pilgrimages and the cult of the Apostle James the Greater in Santiago de Compostela, from the Liber Sancti Jacobi, a codex elaborated in the twelfth century, and which encloses in itself all the nuances of reverence for the disciple in the Galicia region. In order to do so, we are guided by theoretical methodological assumptions for the analysis of the representations in the present source, according to the aspects of the myth and the Social Imaginary, present in the quotidian of the century. From the revelation of the existence of a sepulcher made in the ninth century, attributed to the disciple who would have been according to the Holy Scriptures, one of the closest of the Messiah, a cult that according to tradition has been forgotten for centuries, would thus have resurfaced. Since then, a series of narratives and the itinerary towards the Galician city, were being written and perfected. At the apogee of the cult of relics in the twelfth century, the Compostela Cathedral under the prelate Diego Gelmírez, there was an extension to the elaboration of these documents aimed at legitimizing the presence of the relics of the apostle in "Hispania", among the most notable of these chronicles, is the Liber Sancti Jacobi or Codex Calixtinus. Based on the narratives present in the codex, information about the presence of James the Greater in the Iberian Peninsula was expanded. Thus, our research developed from the research on the writing and the origin of the tradition of the narratives reproduced in the codex. As well, we turn our attention to the relevance and influence of the pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Rome, primordial to the investigations that investigate the amplitude and importance of the trips and pilgrimages in Average Age. Finally, the attention is directed to the analyzes of the myth of St. James and his miracles narrated in the Liber Sancti Jacobi and their interferences, motivations and inspirations for the construction and promotion of the way of Santiago de Compostela.

Isabela Pinheiro Israel 28 March 2011 (has links)
This dissertation aims to show how the myth of Saint James and religion pilgrimage in the Middle Ages are portrayed in the dramaturgy Portuguese and Galician. For this, beside literature research, we also made an empiric research. We developed a questionnaire based on interviews and testimonies collected by us. Subsequently, the questionnaires were tabulated and analyzed. We concluded that the Way of St. James is not only a Catholic route, not just a religious route. It includes numerous speeches and values, religious and secular. This allows the pilgrim to contact himself, enabling considerations and questions about himself, his life and the reality which the pilgrim belongs to. So it makes possible the construction of a new meaning for his own life / A presente dissertação de mestrado teve por objetivo pesquisar a busca por sentido para a própria existência em pessoas que tenham feito uma peregrinação no Caminho de Santiago de Compostela.
