This thesis examines the origins of athleticism in England and its transfer to Canada. During the course of the nineteenth century, the focus of the English public schools changed dramatically. At the start of the century an English upper-class student's leisure time was largely employed in roaming the country-side, trespassing on neighboring estates and poaching. Teachers' responsibilities ended at the classroom door. Seventy-five years later an English public school student's life was focussed on games and team sports including cricket and the various types of football. Teachers now ran all aspects of school life which was designed to instill the manly, Christian, virtues which would enable graduates to take their proper place as leaders in the British Empire. And team sports were a vehicle to achieve that end. Team sports such as cricket and rugby, and the various institutions that promoted them, occupied a central place in upper-class English life and became infused with what Professor Mangan refers to as the 'games ethic': the ideology of athleticism. When the British administrators, soldiers, and immigrants came to Canada they brought with them their love of games and this 'games ethic' that was modified by Canadian experience. In England the 'ethic' was firmly entrenched and supported by a unique class and social structure. Because that structure did not exist in Canada, the attempts of early British Canadians to instill the 'ethic' in the new country were problematic and played out in the conflict between amateurs and professionals. Although an emerging working-class culture and an increasingly commercialized society challenged and eventually made the distinction between amateur and professional athletes irrelevant, belief in the 'games ethic' and in the instrumental value of team sports survived and continues to influence Canadian sport policy today. / Arts, Faculty of / History, Department of / Graduate

The purpose of the study was to determine if subjects would improve in cardiovascular efficiency following a six-week program of trampolining and/or tumbling. Literature concerning cardiovascular efficiency, training, trampoline, testing instruments, test selection and maximal oxygen intake were thoroughly reviewed. The Astrand test of maximal oxygen intake and the Cooper twelve-minute run test of aerobic capacity were found to best fit the needs of the present study.

The investigator undertook a study of the status of the area of health, physical education, and recreation in the colleges and universities of Texas primarily for Negro students during the session of 1953-54.

"The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which industrial arts is taught in the Negro high schools of Texas, the number of pupils enrolled in the schools, the types of programs offered the amount and kind of equipment provided for teaching industrial arts, and the qualifications of the teachers."--4.

This study presents a history of the development and implementation of a punched card registration system in North Texas State College. The study also covers planning stages of registration materials, and a description of the various stages and processes involved in a typical semester from pre-registration preparations through posting the student's grades to the permanent record. To help fill the need for ready reference to methods used in various institutions across the nation, this study will present a history of the development and implementation of a punched card registration system in North Texas State College, with emphasis placed upon those areas of probable major interest to other colleges faced with a similar problem. The study will cover planning stages of registration materials, and will then present a a description of the various stages and processes involved in a typical semester from pre-registration preparations through posting the student's grades to the permanent record.

There are seven schools in the United States and Canada that offer a training program for students qualified in art and the biological sciences to meet the visual communication requirements in medical education and research. A survey of each of these schools in relation to the medical illustration curriculum of North Texas State University will give a broader picture of the educational requirements, nature of work, qualifications of the candidate, and the outlines of the curricula in this field. From this survey a guidance program will be determined to prepare toe undergraduate student for admission to medical school. This investigation of each training program will provide a better understanding of the variances of the medical schools which have departments of art as applied to medicine.
