Un essai robuste et fiable pour la recette de produits d’apport en soudage d’aciers inoxydables / A robust and reliable test for the recipe of welding products for stainless steelsGao, Yuan 29 September 2017 (has links)
The austenitic stainless steel AISI 316L(N) (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) with controlled nitrogen content is widely used for manufacture of vessel and primary circuit structures of the 4th Generation sodium- cooled fast reactors. Multi-pass welds with an appropriate filler metal is used to assemble thick components. Solidification cracks may occur in the mushy zone near the melting weld poor during solidification when a liquid film is distributed along grains boundaries and interdendritic regions and the shrinkage strains across the boundaries cannot be accommodated. It is therefore necessary to prevent this defect using a hot cracking criterion. The approach used in this study is to initiate experimentally a hot crack by a weldability test, and then to simulate these tests to identify a critical strain using a hot crack criterion for the prediction of solidification cracking. Therefore, a hot cracking test (Controlled Restraint Weldability (CRW) test) is proposed in the present study to analyze the susceptibility to hot cracking for base metal 316L(N) and its filler metal 19-15H Thermanit grade. This test is designed to initiate a hot crack in thermal steady state, and then to stop the crack once the local thermomechanical conditions are met. The initiation and stop of the crack depend on external mechanical preload. The material constitutive equations chosen for the material is a visco-plastic model with isotropic and kinematic hardening. The Gleeble thermomechanical tests have been performed at high temperature in order to identify material parameters. The increase of the grain size in the thermally affected zone was modeled and integrated into constitutive equations. The temperature range of melting and solidification of 316L(N) were determine by using the Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). The analysis of the solidification microstructures were also carried out in order to better understand the phenomenon of hot cracking. Some CRW tests were then simulated by finite element method using the Cast3M and Abaqus software in order to valid the hot cracking criterion and to determine a thermomechanical criterion of hot cracking for 316L(N).

Microstructural evolution in 9 wt.% Cr power plant steelsLi, Letian January 2013 (has links)
High chromium ferritic steels such as Grade 91 and Grade 92 are extensively used in the power plant industry. Components made from these types of steels, including headers, steam pipes and tubes, are required to provide reliable service at high pressures (20-30 MPa) and temperatures (550-610°C) for several decades. However, in order to further improve the thermal efficiency of the power plant, the future operation temperature for the ferritic steels needs to be elevated to 650°C. Therefore, the current research project focuses on the examination of recently developed MarBN type steels (Martensitic steel strengthened by Boron and Nitrides) and four Grade 92 derivatives in order to evaluate their suitability for 650°C application, and also to assess their creep strength from a microstructural point of view.

Microstructural alterations in bearing steels under rolling contact fatigueFu, Hanwei January 2017 (has links)
The formation of microstructural alterations in bearing steels under rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is systematically studied. A literature review summarizes current understanding in this field, leading to the key to the formation of these microstructural features being carbon redistribution as a consequence of cyclic rolling contact. In this context, a novel theory is postulated to describe the migration of carbon caused by gliding dislocations. The theory combines the Cottrell atmosphere theory with the Orowan equation and is capable of quantifying the dislocation-assisted carbon flux. Based on the proposed theory, models are suggested for different types of microstructural alterations formed in rolling contact fatigued bearings – dark etching regions (DERs), white etching bands (WEBs) and white etching areas (WEAs). Very good agreement is obtained between the predications made by the models and the experimental data from both this research and the literature. Moreover, the models consider the effects of contact pressure, temperature, rotational speed and number of cycles, and thus can be applied for universal RCF testing conditions. The reproduced microstructural features are also characterized using advanced characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT), with the observation validating the postulated formation mechanisms. It is demonstrated that DERs, WEBs and WEAs follow the same principle during formation – strain induced carbon redistribution. This is the first time that these microstructural alterations are quantitatively described using a unified theory. The achievements obtained from this research can be far reaching. It not only leads to great progress in understanding the phenomenology of RCF in bearing steels, but also can be further extended to other scenarios with similar phenomena such as severe plastic deformation and hydrogen embrittlement.

The present study investigated the correlation between the fracture toughness values, obtained by CTOD test, with the microstructure of the coarse grains regions of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of API 5L X80 steel welded joints obtained by manual Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and by automated Gas Metal Arc Welding Process (GMAW). In the robotized welding, the root passes were made with GMAW process and with ER120S-G wire, the others, composite fill and finishing passages made with AWS E101T-1 type flux-color tubular wire with clay protection Ar + 25% CO² (FCAW-G) or AWS E91T8-G with self-protected wire (FCAW-S). SE(B test specimens standardized according to ASTM E1820 with notch positioned in the most critical regions of the HAZ according to the metallographic and microhardness evaluations in order to evidence the deleterious effect of the fragile zone were done .It was possible to observe that there was a considerable reduction of CTOD value in region with the presence of Austenite and Martensite island nominated AM constituent due to formation of microcracks and microstructural heterogeneity mainly in the manual process. The results also showed that HAZ obtained using the automated GMAW process presented better repeatability, microstructural distribution and CTOD values.

The tensile armor of flexible pipes is the layer responsible for support axial loads of this equipment in field. With the trend of deep increase in offshore oil exploration and production, mainly in pre-salt fields, the use of materials with high performance becomes necessary. The aim of this dissertation is evaluate and compare two high strength steels for such application, one with perlite and other with martensitic matrix. During service life of these components, they are damaged by cyclic loading associated with corrosion process which promote corrosion pits like stress concentrators. Considering these aspects, the materials were evaluated according their fatigue behavior with and without a small defect that act as a notch and simulates a corrosion pit. In addition, they were characterized metallurgical and mechanically and their fracture toughness was estimated through CTOD test. From experimental data, notch sensitivity was quantified. This was driven by initiation process, and fracture toughness was not decisive. The martensitic material showed higher fatigue performance and lower notch sensitivity and presented itself promising for tensile armor wire application.

Mécanismes d'accommodation et débits de premiers et de troisième corps à haute température : étude et modélisation phénoménologique / Accommodation mechanisms, first and third bodies flows in a high temperature contact : study and phenomenological modelLepesant, Pauline 19 April 2013 (has links)
In high temperature forming processes, the tool surfaces are the privileged places for thermal, mechanical, and physico-chemical solicitations. Friction and wear play an important part in tool surface damage. Thus, oxide scales due to the high temperature influence the wear mechanisms. The aim of this work is to define a phenomenological model of the activated mechanisms in a high temperature contact during the first seconds of friction, based on the third body concept. Very short tribological tests, using a pin-on-disc tribometer were carried out. The main characteristic of these tests was the creation of third body traps on the pin surface. The aim of these traps was to identify the third body which was circulating in the contact, and to highlight the activated flows of the first and third bodies. SEM observations and EDS investigations have revealed that different types of third body circulate in the contact, but each type was a part of the pin. Once the source of the third body was identified, its formation and circulation mechanisms were determined. Finally, accommodation mechanisms and particles flows were defined and used to develop a phenomenological model of a high temperature contact.

Estudo termodinâmico da influência dos microelementos (V, Nb, Al e Ti) no crescimento dos grãos em aços forjados a quente / Thermodynamics studies of the influence of the micro alloying elements (V, Nb, Al e Ti) on grain growth in hot forging steelsRomeiro, Lauro Correa January 2013 (has links)
Thermodynamics studies of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of the micro elements V, Nb, Al and Ti were performed using the FactSage program databases, in order to verify their potential for grain growth inhibition in a range of temperatures of hot forged steels. A procedure to verify the solubility of compounds of the micro elements was developed by means of FactSage, and it was studied complex states less discussed in literature, such as the combined effect of two micro elements in steel and the behavior of carbonitrides at high temperatures, varying carbon and nitrogen contents. The studies demonstrate that the nitrides with Titanium have high stability in austenite at elevated temperatures: therefore they are potentially highly effective in grain size control. Carbides with Niobium also present effective stability at high temperatures, as well as the carbonitrides of these two elements. A good correlation was verified between the solubility product obtained either by experimental methods, or by thermodynamics calculation presented by literature. Also, a valuable contribution is made by the software in the studies of precipitation and dissolution of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides in austenite; thus aiding the selection of steels, and/or modification of the chemical composition of standardized steels, by means of adding micro elements; and providing a suitable choice of carbon and nitrogen content when one seeks to control the grain growth at elevated temperatures. Such results can help indirectly in the studies eliminating conventional heat treatment methods, by using micro alloyed steels with controlled cooling and low alloy steels quenched after forging, with overall reducing costs. Besides these considerations, the results presented and the developed procedure can be useful in other areas where grain growth is an important factor, such as in hot rolling and carburizing at high temperature.

Direct electron transfer mechanisms in microbial corrosion of steels : application to Geobacter sulfurreducens and hydrogenase from Clostridium acetobutylicum.Mehanna, Maha 19 January 2009 (has links)
Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) costs billions of euros per year. It is commonly agreed that sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) play a key role in anaerobic MIC of steels. In spite of this, laboratory experiments have difficulty in reproducing the corrosion of steels that is observed in natural environments. Moreover, they do not explain what triggers corrosion since SRB, ubiquitous in natural environments, do not systematically induce corrosion. The aim of this work was to evaluate the relevance of new electron transfer mechanisms between steels and proteins or microbial cells in the domain of MIC. The first part of the thesis evaluates the impact of [Fe]-hydrogenase on the anaerobic corrosion of mild steels. The direct catalysis of proton reduction by hydrogenases has often been suggested in the literature; here, it is clearly demonstrated. Hydrogenase from Clostridium acetobutylicum, whether it is active, deactivated on denatured, can accelerate the corrosion of mild steel. The presence of a phosphate medium makes the interpretations more complex without modifying the mechanism. A new hypothesis implying the crucial role of iron-sulphur clusters contained in the protein is brought to light. Corrosion catalysis by hydrogenases could be compared with well-known mechanisms of corrosion catalysis by iron sulphide. In this case, the redox state of iron-sulphur clusters would play a key role in the occurrence of corrosion. The second part elucidates the role of Geobacter sulfurreducens in anaerobic corrosion of three types of steels: mild steel (1145), ferritic (403) and austenitic steels (304L and 316L). Results show, for the first time, that adherent bacterial cells induce open circuit potential ennoblement of steels and accelerate the corrosion of slightly alloyed steels by a direct electron transfer mechanism. Depending on the concentrations of the electron acceptors and donors in the medium, G. sulfurreducens could either enhance corrosion propagation by direct catalysis of proton reduction or, in the absence of acceptors and with an excess of donors, protect against corrosion. Thus the occurrence of corrosion relies on the unfavourable conjunction of many parameters. These results obtained in laboratory conditions open new paths for investigating MIC in natural environments.

This work aimed to evaluate both the concepts of dissimilar welding and laser welding process in advanced steels and its effects on the resulting properties of the welded products. Thus, sets consisting of two steel plates of different thickness, resistance and mechanical properties were produced, all used in automotive applications. The assemblies were formed through the combination between TRIP steel and DP, LC, BH and IF steels, by laser welding process, resulting in the following sets: TRIP+BH, TRIP+IF, TRIP+DP and TRIP+LC, from where specimens were extracted in order to perform metallographic, tensile and hardness tests, to evaluate the final properties of the dissimilar welded products, and also gather information to verify its potential of employment in the automotive industry, according to use and needs of application Based on tests, discussions and analysis performed, it was observed that the laser welding has shown good effectiveness in the union of dissimilar steels, despite of its welding discontinuities, as a result of welding process, which brings lights to importance of welding process control. The tensile tests showed good results for the TRIP+DP set, whose values could be compared to the TRIP steel, individually. The hardness profile tests contributed to verify welding sets where the interaction between dissimilar steels could imply in a good alternative, as observed in the TRIP+BH set. The variation of mechanical properties was clearly observed in the tests conducted, however, the graphics used to monitor / compare the properties variation along the samples has shown that the application and use of dissimilar materials together or in substitution of TRIP steel requires clear specifications defined by projects, and oriented to specific applications in the vehicle.

Aciers inoxydables et corrosion localisée : le rôle du molibdène / Stainless steel in alkaline media : the role of Molybdenum on pitting and crevice corrosion resistanceMesquita, Thiago 02 March 2012 (has links)
The use of stainless steels (SS) as concrete reinforcement is becoming increasinglypopular in coastal and marine constructions in order to prevent corrosion induced by chlorideions penetrating into the concrete. However, the influence of Mo addition on pitting corrosionresistance of these steels is not fully understood in alkaline chloride conditions although thiselement is widely associated to an increasing corrosion resistance in acidic and neutralenvironments. Therefore, understanding Mo mechanism on corrosion resistance in alkalineconditions is hence of major importance for the setting of optimized alloy composition. ThisPhD work aims to study the effect of Mo addition on pitting corrosion properties of austenitic, ferritic and mainly lean duplex stainless steels in alkaline media, which simulates the concreteenvironment. As far as the role of Mo is concerned, it will be discussed in terms of, pittingcorrosion resistance, repassivation kinetics, and passivation properties from acidic to alkalineconditions.
