Sternbergové - aristokratická společnost v "dlouhém 19. století" / Sternberg's - the aristocratics Society in the "long 19th Century"Tomsová, Petra January 2015 (has links)
The main aim of the thesis is to present an analysis of the younger Bohemian branch of Sternberg dynasty. The author follows the life of Zdeněk Sternberg († 1900) in his role of an owner and a successful caretaker of the dominions of Radnice, Český Šternberk and Jemniště. Furthermore, the problematic of aristocratic marriages is reconstructed through studying the fates of his sons Alois († 1907) and Filip († 1924). This theme was supplemented by identifying those values which were of consequence when an adequate partner for a member of aristocracy was sought. The problematic is demonstrated on the situations of both Alois who spent all his life as a bachelor and his younger brother Filip who married and enjoyed a family life. The private world of three Zdeněk's daughters is also reconstructed. The examples of Zdenka Schnönborn († 1915) and Kunhuta Lobkowicz († 1916) offer an insight into their daily dealings within their new families while the youngest sister Karolína († 1930) spent her years unwed and childless. The particular style of aristocratic life is demonstrated on interests and entertainment which the aristocracy fostered (travelling, hunt, horsemanship, artistic interests, sport, games, reading, theatre etc.). The final part of the work focuses on disputes surrounding the issue of...

The Neural Systems of Working Memory: The Sternberg Working Memory Task in a Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury SamplePertab, Jon Leroy 29 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Working memory tasks are associated with the activation of widely distributed neural networks. The Sternberg working memory task has been used to explore the neural correlates associated with changes in memory load and the resolution of interference. Preliminary research suggests that the integrity of the anterior cingulate is correlated with resolving load adjustments but not in resolving interference demands; the opposite pattern of associations have been observed with the right middle frontal gyrus.Participants in the present study were 28 children who had sustained moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and 28 children who had sustained orthopedic injuries (OI). Participants were aged between 7 and 17 years at the time of injury (mean age = 13.2, s.d.=2.3). The groups were matched on age, gender, socioeconomic level, and pre-injury measures of behavioral and emotional functioning. Participants completed the Sternberg working memory task and structural MRI scans three months post injury. Automated brain parcellation software (Freesurfer) was used to calculate volumetric data for regions of interest. Regions of interest included the anterior cingulate and right middle frontal gyrus; additionally, the volume of the corpus callosum was used as an index of overall brain integrity. There were no significant differences between the groups on percent errors on the Sternberg task. Participants in the TBI group had significantly longer reaction times overall than the OI group. Interference in the Sternberg task has the potential to either help or hinder performance. Participants in the OI group displayed the anticipated effects of interference on reaction time whereas the TBI group as a whole did not display this pattern (priming effect not observed). The TBI group had significantly lower volumes in the regions of interest than the OI group. Hypothesized correlations between the regions of interest and changes in load / interference demands were partially supported. Exploratory analyses identified positive correlations between the volume of the right middle frontal gyrus and reaction time measures that warrant further exploration.

Leopold Sternberg, život rakousko-uherského šlechtice ve 20. století / Leopold Sternberg, the life of Austria-Hungarian aristocrat during the 20th centuryHrdinová, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation depicts a life of Leopold Sternberg who was representative of one of the most significant Czech genus. The author of this thesis focused on his personality, war experience, and social activities as well as on a circle of his closest associates. She also focused on the fate of his siblings who until now were overlooked by researchers. This dissertation tracks the condition of family property during dramatic historical changes in the first half of the 20th century when they were often found out of the ownership of Sternberg family. We are talking about the first land reformation, the forced management during Nazi era and the nationalization after the Communist putsch in Czechoslovakia. The thesis focuses on Leopold's activities in the time of Nazi threat when he clearly registered to the Czech State. Some part of the thesis is dedicated to the American ambassador in Czechoslovakia Laurence A. Steinhardt. His fate was closely connected to at one point with the Sternberg one. The author has tried to profile the fate of Leopold Sternberg and his family after moving in abroad where he died in 1957. Keywords Sternberg, Aristocracy, Rakousko-Uhersko, World War First, Czechoslovakia, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Laurence Steinhardt

Primäre extranodale Manifestation des klassischen Hodgkin-Lymphoms im Kopf-Hals-Bereich / Primary extranodal manifestation of classical Hodgkin´s disease in the head and neck regionKiesel, Elisabeth January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Most patients with classical Hodgkin´s disease show a typical involvement of cervical nodal regions. In rare instances a primary extranodal manifestation is described. This dissertation aims to identify as many cases as possible with a particular pattern of disease: classical Hodgkin´s lymphoma primary involving extranodal head and neck sites. Based on the determined results some important questions concerning this special disease should be answered. During the first phase of research an extensive analysis of the German and English literature was carried out. From the year 1924 to 2010 103 patients were analyzed. These suitable case reports were documented in tabular form with all available details on histological, epidemiplogical and clinical results. In the second phase of data evaluation the database of the pathological institute of the Julius-Maximilians University Würzburg was searched for further cases. Between the year 1999 and 2008 21 case reports were found and analyzed. This collective was also examined for histological, epidemiological and clinical parameters. The results of the 124 patients were discussed in all details and the expressed questions were answered in conclusion.

"Sie sind Aristokratin?" Urozené ženy ve 20. století na příkladě rodu Sternbergů / "Sie sind Aristokratin?" Noble women in 20th century on example of Sternberg familyNEMRAVOVÁ, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
The Diploma thesis aims at lives of the aristocratic women in the 20th century. The focus is placed on their perception of the political events of the period and changes of their role both within family and society. This issue is analyzed with help of the example of three female aristocrats who married into the old Czech family of the Sternbergs, more specifically, three ladies belonging to three different generations Karolína Sternberg, b. Thurn-Valsassina-Como-Vercelli (1863-1944), Kunhuta Sternberg, b. Mensdorff-Pouilly (1899-1989), and Alžběta Sternberg, b. Hrubá z Gelenj (*1929). The description of their lifetimes follows after the more theoretical part dealing in general with the position of women in the 20th century as well as with a brief history of the Sternberg family. The environment in which the ladies grew up is taken into account, too. Apart from the private written documents, the thesis is also based on some interviews with several living members of the family. The concluding part comprises a comparison of the ladies´ lives towards each other and towards the non-aristocratic society.

Deník z cesty Kašpara ze Šternberka z let 1786 1787, z hlediska textové lingvistiky / The Travel Report by Kaspar von Sternber (1786-1787), especially because of the Aspects of the TextlinguisticsBumbálková, Gita January 2013 (has links)
The presented thesis deals with the historic-linguistic analysis of private travelogues of Kašpar Šternberk that were arosen in the years 1786 and 1787. Historical part is dedicated to the family of Sternberk, the life of Caspar Sternberg and political, social, cultural and linguistic development in 18th century. The textological part is oriented on syntactic - stylistic and lexical analysis of the text. According to the research, in the travelogues that is written as diary, the paratactic phrase exceeds hypotactic phrase. Hypotactic phrase consists mainly of the subordinate declarative clauses. Due to these results, the finitum was found mostly on the second and last place in a sentence. With few exceptions the position of finitum was strictly kept as well as sentence frame. By the research of the lexical analysis there was found out that in the diaries the words coming from Latin, Greek, French and Italian occur. There are mainly the expressions connected with architecture, science and art.

"So Far from Home ..." : a Translation of Jacques Sternberg's "Si loin du monde ..."Mather, Brian Scott 14 June 2016 (has links)
This master's thesis comprises an English translation of Jacques Sternberg's "Si loin du monde ..." preceded by an introduction that addresses the translator's general theoretical approach to translation as well as an explanation and justification of specific choices made for this translation in particular.
"Si loin du monde ..." is a short work of science fiction by Belgian author Jacques Sternberg that appeared in the collection Entre deux mondes incertains, published in 1957. It takes the form of a first-person narrative told from the perspective of an extra-terrestrial, who has been sent on a mission to study humanity and its environment and furtively make preparation for the arrival of his people on Earth.
The section on theory sets out to find whether there exist absolute norms exterior to the subjectivity of the translator that regulate the act of translation. Three potential normative centers are proposed: text, author, and reader. The starting point when appraising text is the sourcier/cibliste dichotomy and the objection préjudicielle presented in Georges Mounin's Les belles infidèles. The objection préjudicielle is the claim that translation is theoretically impossible. The conclusion reached is that the text does not establish absolute norms of correspondence between the target text and the source text because there is no absolute meaning inherent in the text.
When examining the author as a potential source of the norms of translation, Roland Barthe"s "La mort de l'auteur" is used to show that, since the meaning of a text is not ultimately determined by the author, neither can he be an absolute regulator of correspondence in translation.
Finally, the reader is found to be a relative (not absolute) regulator of the norms of translation. This regulating role and the nature of its demands on the translator is explored through an application of the author/reader dialectic found in Sartre's Qu'est-ce que la littérature?
It is concluded that there do not exist any absolute norms of translation exterior to the translator, and that the translator creates an aesthetic unity in the target text through adherence to norms that are ultimately founded in his own subjectivity.

Normal Form of Equivariant Maps and Singular Symplectic Reduction in Infinite Dimensions with Applications to Gauge Field TheoryDiez, Tobias 02 September 2019 (has links)
Inspired by problems in gauge field theory, this thesis is concerned with various
aspects of infinite-dimensional differential geometry.
In the first part, a local normal form theorem for smooth equivariant maps
between tame Fréchet manifolds is established. Moreover, an elliptic version of
this theorem is obtained. The proof these normal form results is inspired by
the Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction for dynamical systems and by the Kuranishi
method for moduli spaces, and uses a slice theorem for Fréchet manifolds as
the main technical tool. As a consequence of this equivariant normal form
theorem, the abstract moduli space obtained by factorizing a level set of the
equivariant map with respect to the group action carries the structure of a
Kuranishi space, i.e., such moduli spaces are locally modeled on the quotient
by a compact group of the zero set of a smooth map.
In the second part of the thesis, the theory of singular symplectic reduction
is developed in the infinite-dimensional Fréchet setting. By refining the above
construction, a normal form for momentum maps similar to the classical
Marle–Guillemin–Sternberg normal form is established. Analogous to the
reasoning in finite dimensions, this normal form result is then used to show
that the reduced phase space decomposes into smooth manifolds each carrying
a natural symplectic structure.
Finally, the singular symplectic reduction scheme is further investigated in the
situation where the original phase space is an infinite-dimensional cotangent
bundle. The fibered structure of the cotangent bundle yields a refinement of
the usual orbit-momentum type strata into so-called seams. Using a suitable
normal form theorem, it is shown that these seams are manifolds. Taking
the harmonic oscillator as an example, the influence of the singular seams on
dynamics is illustrated.
The general results stated above are applied to various gauge theory models.
The moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections in four dimensions and of
Yang–Mills connections in two dimensions is studied. Moreover, the stratified
structure of the reduced phase space of the Yang–Mills–Higgs theory is
investigated in a Hamiltonian formulation after a (3 + 1)-splitting.
