Economic analysis of backgrounding and stocking industries in the Flint Hills of Kansas

Ott, Henry L. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Agricultural Economics / Glynn Tonsor / The purpose of our analysis was to examine production strategies in the backgrounder and stocker segments of the beef industry within the Flint Hills region of Kansas. The time period analyzed encompassed 1996-2015. September and November placements of steers in the backgrounding sector of the industry were analyzed with an intended March sale date. Placements considered included 425, 500, and 575 pound steers. April and May placements of steers were analyzed for the industry’s stocking sector with an intended July sale date. Placements considered included 450, 600, and 750 pound steers. Within our analysis historical ex-post net incomes were analyzed, prediction errors were calculated (net income, revenue, and cost of gain), and market incentives/signals were analyzed. While for our historical ex-post net income analysis we did not identify one of the four placement strategies as superior in all 20 years of our analysis, we did find scenarios that were typically superior to others. In terms of backgrounding, November placements were typically superior to September placements, in terms of stocking April placements were typically superior to May placements, and when comparing backgrounding and stocking scenarios stocking scenarios were typically superior. In terms of prediction errors, we found that revenue errors are the main drivers of net income error. In general, within the backgrounding scenarios typical producers who are representative of our model assumptions generally overestimate net incomes which is detrimental to them (make lower profits than they anticipate making), while in stocking scenarios producers underestimate net incomes which is generally beneficial to them (make larger profits than they anticipate making). Market signal/incentive and ex-post net income analysis both indicated that steer weight at time of sale was a large factor influencing backgrounder profitability and decision making, and that pasture rents were a large factor influencing stocker profitability and decision making. In all four scenarios it proved economically beneficial to place lighter steer rather than heavy steers. Further research may include, but is not limited to; adding bulls and heifers to our model, analyzing different placement weights within our model, and allowing for animal performance variability within our model.

Seasonal Market Trends for Feeder and Stocker and for Slaughter Steers for the Years 1940 through 1948

Embry, J.C. 06 1900 (has links)
Standing on the threshold of a new decade, Texas agriculture is faced with three major problems. The first of these problems is the imperative need for a sound soil and water conservation program. Texas has been struggling with this problem for fifty years and has made some progress toward its solution. During the war, however, it was an all-out production of food regardless of cost, either in terms of dollars or resources. As a result, the conservation problem is more acute today than ever before. The second problem is that farm production is out of balance. Lucrative prices for oil and grain crops, plus the increasing shortage of farm labor, turned thousands of farmers from the more stable diversified farm program which had been built up during the '30s. Now, they are again faced with quotas and acreage allotments. This calls for necessarily early and probably extensive readjustment of the entire agricultural production program. The third major change in the agricultural picture is the rapid industrialization of Texas during and since the war. This increase in urban population in this state means an increased market right at the farmer's door for more livestock, dairy, poultry, fruit, and vegetable production. Fortunately, the solution of these three problems is found in one answer. Pasture grass, forage crops, and legumes provide the best means of soil and water conservation and soil building. Inclusion of these crops in a diversified and balanced cropping program will solve the problem of marketing quotas and acreage allotments. Marketing through livestock will provide the abundance of these foods which is needed to meet the growing demands of Texas markets.

Pen size and BRD: Impacts on antimicrobial use, antimicrobial resistance, performance, and profitability

Midkiff, Kirsten 06 August 2021 (has links)
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of number of stocker cattle in receiving pens (large: n=150 cattle; small: n=50 cattle) on 1) BRD morbidity/mortality, and performance, 2) antimicrobial use and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Mannheimia haemolytica, and 3) profitability of stocker operations. No differences were found for morbidity (p=0.5041). Mortality tended (p=0.0744) to be higher in large groups. BW increased (p LESS THAN 0.0001) over time. A treatment*day interaction (p=0.00592) was found for ADG, with largest gains for both groups from day 14-28. M. haemolytica recovery decreased (p=0.0002) over time. Antimicrobial resistance (p=0.0179) and MDR (p=0.0405) were higher in the small group. Treatment costs were higher in the small group ($1,093.53/hd) compared to large ($1,037.04/hd). Because of the nature of a pilot study, further research are needed to determine the effectiveness of reducing animals in a pen on health, growth, AMR, and profitability associated with stocker cattle.

The subject of this thesis is the insertion of the electric guitar in Brazilian popular music, a process that occurred progressively from the beginning of the 20th century. Through the study of the styles of guitar players José Meneses e Olmir Stocker, I seek to understand how the electric guitar was not only introduced, but also adapted to the Brazilian popular repertoire. Identified as an instrument with artificial devices (electromagnetic pickups) and symbolically associated to jazz and Anglo-American pop music, the electric guitar was object both of veneration and rejection by critics and players. Even as it was repudiated by some as a symbol of "foreignness" or even of cultural imperialism against the "Brazilian nation," it was acknowledged by other as an element of musical sophistication and modernity. Based on analyses of compositions and recordings by José Meneses and Olmir Stocker, I have sought to show that the styles of these two musicians express, in a certain way, a series of symbolic conflicts that pervaded the musical milieu for decades. These conflicts were focused on binary oppositions between national/international, erudite/popular; commercial/non-commercial, traditional/modern. Moreover, it was possible to verify that, whereas José Meneses - a musician who began his career still in the 1940's - can be acknowledged as a player who made a transition from acoustic to electric guitar, Olmir Stocker is part of a generation that consolidated the instrument in Brazilian popular music, building a style adapted to a wide range of popular and regional rhythms and genres / Doutorado / Musica / Doutor em Música

Störungssystematikbestimmte Instandhaltung in einem Wafertransportsystem / Trouble Systematic Based Maintenance in a wafer transport system

Niekisch, Torsten 13 November 2001 (has links) (PDF)
