51	A Sensory Analysis of Self-Injurious Behavior Clay, Cris Thomas 01 January 1986 (has links) (PDF) The present study was designed to investigate the role of sensory extinction and sensory reinforcement in the moti- vation of self-injurious behavior. The intervention was based on the assumption that each subject's SIB behavior was motivated by the sensory consequences of the behavior. A pre- assessment phase was used to select appropriate sensory ex- tinction devices and sensory reinforcing toys, although no appropriate sensory toys could be identified. Thus, treat- ment consisted solely of sensory extinction using a reversal design. Results showed that the sensory extinction devices reduced tactile stimulation of face slapping and pica for two developmentally disabled adults. Maintenance of treat- ment gains was programmed by fading the device both on the unit and in the experimental setting. This procedure was minimally successful in achieving long term reduction in SIB. 52	Assessment of case-based integrated learning as a part of dental curriculum reform Nadershahi, Nader A. 01 January 2011 (has links) There has been a growing call for change in the management of dental education programs, and, in response to this call, the faculty and staff at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry developed the Pacific Dental Helix Curriculum management model. The first major component of this curriculum was the development of the Integrated Clinical Science Strand of the Helix focused on multidisciplinary and case-based andragogies. The mixed method research design was used to identify common aspects of Case-Based Learning and multi-disciplinary teaching through a qualitative analysis of curricular materials and to analyze their impact on selected student outcomes of pre and post-change through statistical analysis. The outcomes chosen for the quantitative portion were surrogate measures of National Board Scores and grade point averages to represent knowledge and skills. The overall analysis of the quantitative data shows negligible impact on the outcomes being measured. We know from the literature that active learning models motivate and engage students at a higher level in their learning and better prepare them to solve problems creatively versus a traditional educational model, so it is significant to see that there were no decreases in performance with a move to a more engaging curriculum. This study offers foundational information for future curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessment. 53	A study of the development of the Recreation Department of Stockton, California Coston, Margaret Fitzgerald 01 January 1948 (has links) (PDF) Stockton is a city suffering from the sudden realization that it is no longer a small farm town, end that in the process of becoming a moderate-sized city, a community faces inevitable growing pains. The municipal recreation phase of city government well illustrates this fact. Because of the great need for expansion in this field, and because the city is now just beginning to rise to meet the occasion, a study of the Recreational Department and the program of the Metropolitan Recreation Commission in Stockton City Government and San Joaquin County, is a particularly interesting activity. In contrast to many theses which are based upon research in books and periodicals, this thesis has been the outgrowth of investigation based largely upon interviews with persons concerned with this phase of city government and upon personal observation, as well as reports and newspaper accounts of activities. As a resident of Stockton during much of the time covered in this report, as an attendant at periodic meetings of both the Junior Youth Council and the Stockton Youth Council, as a participant in some of the Recreation Department's activities, and as a former employee of a Stockton group work agency, the author has had to guard against subjective reporting in writing this paper. She has. attempted to record evaluations which she considered valid and to include facts and sources on which her opinions were based.
