The specific problem of this study was to develop a five-year budget for the San Joaquin Delta Community College District. The choice of a five-year budget was made by the administration after studying the advantages and disadvantages of. shorter and longer term budgets. A term of less than five years did not meet the objectives of the college for the building and educational programs. A ten-year budget would necessarily be less accurate, since the longer the projection, the more vague and theoretical it becomes. The purposes of this study were to: (1) review the literature pertaining to long-range budgeting, (2) examine the practices of long-range budgeting of other community college districts in California, (3) obtain data to be used in developing a long-range budget, (4) develop a continuing long-range budget for San Joaquin Delta·Community College District, and (5} make recommendations resulting from the study.

The development of an art appreciation course for the Stockton Senior High Schools

One of the main projects of the Stockton Unified School District Curriculum Council during the past two years has been to evaluate and review possible courses to be taught on a trial basis in the curriculums of the Stockton Senior High Schools. One such course, "World of Art," was recommended and approved by the Curriculum Council to be initiated as a trial offering for no later than 1960. The "World of Art" course was originally intended to be a one semester course open to junior and senior students in secondary school. Although the course was intended to be a one semester course in art appreciation, it was designed primarily to bring to interested and academically able students an awareness of the art values in personal and community life. The emphasis of such a course was the development of an understanding of art forms and the artists' materials of the present day in relation to the artistic heritage of our times. The Stockton Unified School District Curriculum Council and Steering Committee for Art Education have granted permission to extend the "World of Art" course from a one semester course to a full year course if a proper syllabus and survey of possible problems that would arise in the actual course could be worked out. The Curriculum Council, after an analysis of related literature dealing with art appreciation throughout the schools in the United States, felt that the principle aim of the newly proposed course should be to bring to the attention of senior high school students the most significant developments in the creative arts.

During the past months much has been published in periodicals, especially those of a pictorial nature, which discredits institutions established for the care of' the mentally ill throughout the nation. Many articles have been presented which show an intelligent approach, but the majority of these treatments are by those who are basing too much on a very narrow experience. For example, one news magazine recently printed a picture of a mental patient in institutional garb sitting on a bench in one of the poses most characteristic of a catatonic. The caption of the picture seemed to ignore this significant fact and instead to imply that the dejected pose was due to improper treatment. In this paper the author is neither defending the present mental institution, nor is he attempting to throw a "verbal brickbat" at the constructive work which is being done at institutions of this type. He is, rather, submitting an analysis of the prevalence and distribution of certain parasitic Protozoa in a large state hospital in the hope that the findings are of significance not merely in terms of institutional welfare but also in the more general terms of: (1) relationship between mental health and parasitic infections, and (2) regional differences in the incidence of such infections in California.

It is thus the purpose of this study to explore the educational aspirations of a group of high school students whose ethnic background is Chinese with the intention of filling the gap in sociological research that has overlooked the Chinese community. As there are many opposing theories on the subject of aspiration, this case study of Chinese students seeks to clarify some of the theoretical perspectives and their problems. Moreover, any study of a minority group would inevitably expose some of the problems that the group faces. Once the nature of the problems is identified and understood, hopefully, solutions may be forthcoming. It is for these research, theoretical, and practical reasons that the present study is undertaken.

The effectiveness of videotape recorded feedback on the facilitation of behavior change in three institutionalized adults

The effectiveness of videotape recorded feedback on reducing the rate of inappropriate, bizarre mannerisms n hospitalized individuals was examined using a multiple baseline design across three subjects. Results indicate that the technique was effective in reducing the rate of these behaviors in the treatment setting. Data on generalization of treatment effects were inconclusive. Theoretical explanations for the procedure's effectiveness are discussed.

For a period of twenty years beginning in 1918 when the writer became Superintendent of the Stockton Playground Department, annual reports of its major activities and accomplishments were made and submitted to the Mayor and later the City Manager for their information. They helped in securing the next budget. Throughout the thirty years of service additional reports of activities and improvements in facilities were kept on file in the office of the department for the information of its officers and a permanent record. The writer finds that he has been a part. of the supervised public playground movement since its inception when President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 called together at the White House the eastern leaders in physical education, recreation, camping and children's playgrounds. (The year 1906 was the year the writer started college.) As a result of President Roosevelt's White House meeting the National Playground Association was formed. Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick was elected and served as its president until 1910 during this formative period. Henry Curtis, Director of Playgrounds in Washington, D.C. became its first secretary.

An analysis of Stockton Unified School District's 7th grade student performance and behavior in year one of its K–8 elementary schools configuration

This study evaluated through an analysis of baseline data whether Stockton Unified School District's board decision to transition from middle school settings to K-8 settings result in: increased student achievement as measured by performance on the California Standards Tests (CSTs) in English language arts and Mathematics, and decreased problem behaviors as measured through the number of suspensions at the 7th grade level in its first year of implementation for the 2006-2007 school year. Four former middle schools and thirty nine K-8 elementary school's achievement and suspension data comprised the purposeful sample for this one shot case study. Former middle school populations averaged 684 to 747 students per school while the average number of 7th grade students attending the newly formed K-8s averaged 85 students per site. Categorical variables were controlled for ethnicity, gender, second language learner, socioeconomically deprived and school wide. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to create a time analysis of 7th grade student performance and behavior as measured by number of suspensions through the use of time trend analysis over a four year period 2002-2003 through 2005-2006. In order to find performance and suspension levels for each categorical variable, scores were derived as the difference between each categorical variable and the growth rate of White (the omitted category). Chow Test (1960) was applied to test for change in setting from the middle school to K-8. Results determined no significant growth in academic achievement in English language arts or mathematics for any subgroup following the move to a K-8 setting. Second language learners demonstrated a statistically significant drop at -6.8 percent from Far Below Basic in English language arts over the four year period of attending a middle school setting. No other subgroup showed any statistical significance in performance over time when compared to the growth of their White constituents. Statistical significant findings were found for number of suspensions for all subgroups over time and with the move to a K-8 setting for Hispanic, Black and Asian males and females. Implications for educators and future research are discussed.
