Improvements in the effectiveness of information management in construction organisations

Sheriff, Abdullahi January 2011 (has links)
Managing information effectively is crucial for improving processes within organisations. To this end, a more holistic approach is required which aligns the organisations information and technology needs with its people, processes and business model. This should shift the emphasis from collaborating on individual projects to a long term view of how best to support an organisation s business strategy. It also shifts the emphasis from managing information (storing information to exploit it) to managing with information (harnessing information to gain competitive advantage across the organisation). This thesis is the culmination of a four year EngD research critically investigating improvements in the effectiveness of Information Management (IM) in construction industry based organisations. It begins with an introduction to the research, its aims and objectives, and then presents a detailed review of related literature about the subject matter and the methodology employed in conducting the research. The eight research tasks carried out using extensive, varied and appropriate methods including literature reviews, case studies, interviews, surveys and workshops are then explained based upon which a number of key recommendations are drawn. The findings define IM as distinct from Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) and provide a critical insight into IM in construction industry based organisations including its strategic drivers, key influencers and barriers. It further highlights the four components of a holistic approach to IM as: The Content Model - the nature and structure of the content including metadata; The Enterprise Model - operational structure of the company including its business processes and information dependent activities; Systems and Technology - the most appropriate technological solutions in light of the defined content and enterprise models; and Implementation and Change Management - support for people and managing the transition into improved ways of working. The findings show that a clear alignment between an organisations information needs and its operational processes is key to developing and implementing an effective IM strategy. It shows that a unified approach is more appropriate for organisations than a single approach as certain multi-dimensional context specific factors exist which influence the nature of each organisations needs and therefore most suitable solutions to address them. The findings also demonstrate the importance of metadata in integrating organisations and enabling a holistic IM Strategy. A standard IM framework is developed and validated which provides a structured and systematic approach for organisations seeking to develop suitable metadata standards to meet their needs. The holistic approach applied to a number of case studies provides novel insights into the use of metadata in information retrieval; the development of aligned information architecture and the creation of holistic strategies for improving knowledge sharing and innovation. The thesis concludes with a critical review of the research and a number of key recommendations for organisations, IM research and the wider construction industry. All the findings and insights have been and continue to be disseminated through a number of peer reviewed publications.

Design and development of Knowledge Based System for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations

Milana, M., Khan, M. Khurshid, Munive-Hernandez, J. Eduardo 30 August 2016 (has links)
Yes / The importance of maintenance has escalated significantly by the increase in automation in manufacturing processes. This condition changed the perspective of maintenance from being considered as an inevitable cost to being seen as a key business function to drive competitiveness. Consequently, maintenance decisions need to be aligned with the business competitive strategy as well as the requirements of manufacturing/quality functions in order to support manufacturing equipment performance. Therefore, it is required to synchronise the maintenance strategy and operations with business and manufacturing/quality aspects. This article presents the design and development of a Knowledge Based System for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations. The developed framework of the Knowledge Based System for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations is elaborated to show how the Knowledge Based System for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations can be applied to support maintenance decisions. The knowledge-based system integrates the Gauging Absences of Prerequisites methodology in order to deal with different decision-making priorities and to facilitate benchmarking with a target performance state. This is a new contribution to this area. The Knowledge Based System for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations is useful in reviewing the existing maintenance system and provides reasonable recommendations for maintenance decisions with respect to business and manufacturing perspectives. In addition, it indicates the roadmap from the current state to the benchmark goals for the maintenance system. / Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia and the University of Bradford, UK.

The Development of a Hybrid Knowledge-Based System for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations in an Automotive Industry Environment: The Development of a Hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB) System/ Gauging Absences of Pre-Requisites (GAP)/Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) Methodology for Integrated Maintenance Strategy and Operations in an Automotive Industry Environment

Milana, Milana January 2018 (has links)
The dependency of maintenance as a manufacturing logistic function has made the considerations of maintenance decisions complex in nature. The importance of maintenance has escalated significantly by the increasing of automation in manufacturing processes. This condition switches the traditional maintenance perspective of “fire-fighter” into the business competitive driver. As a consequence, maintenance needs to consider other related aspects of decision making to achieve competitive advantage. This research aims to develop a hybrid Knowledge-Based (KB) System/GAP/AHP methodology to support the integration of maintenance decision with business and manufacturing perspectives. It constructs over 2000 KB rules on Strategic Stage (business and manufacturing aspects) and Maintenance Operations Stage (maintenance aspects). Each aspect contains KB rules attached with GAP analysis to assess the gap between current and prerequisite condition. AHP analysis is then deployed to compare those aspects structurally in a pair-wise manner to identify the critical ones to be rectified. This hybrid KB system is useful in reviewing the existing maintenance system performance and provides reasonable recommendations to improve maintenance performance with respect to business and manufacturing perspectives. Eventually, it indicates the roadmap from the current state to the benchmark goals for the maintenance system. This novel methodology of KBS/GAP/AHP to support maintenance decision is developed for a particular application in the automotive environment. The validation is conducted in two automotive companies in Indonesia and one published case study in an automotive company. The result confirms that the developed KB system can provide the valid, reasonable and consistent result to propose structured recommendation for maintenance improvement priority.

The purpose ofthis dissertation is to study the case ofthe company called Lupatech CSL in matters fundamentally concerning its productive process. The text also discusses the possibility to promote improvements and changes able to provide solutions that will enable competitive differentiation to the company's business through the restructuring of the manufacturing process. Taking into account the systemic analysis of the environment, the paper thus suggests the adoption ofsome principles ofthe Toyota Production M odel, one of which recommends a relationship of effective cooperation and partnership with suppliers. Considering the companies permanent need to seek their equilibrium and distinction in the market, this work tries to establish and analysis of systemic thinking and of other foundations of theoretical convergence. The better grasp the pros and cons of the Toyota¬style management, this dissertation tries to carry out an investigation starting from the early Taylor-Ford mass production model up to the latest events that shook the image ofToyota worldwide. The dissertational analysis ofthe Lupatech case is likely to ultimately strengthen and assist the company in its decision making both in the operational area and in the definition ofstrategic proposition.

Från strategi till handling : En fallstudie om översättning på Scania Oskarshamn / From Strategy to Action : A Case Study on Translation at Scania Oskarshamn

Larsson, Frida, Agrell Gustafsson, Hanna January 2022 (has links)
Background: In dynamic business environments, strategy is more crucial than ever because a clear and well-thought-out strategy is the management's instructions for doing business and its roadmap to a competitive advantage. Once strategies have been formulated, they must be executed, otherwise wellformulated strategies would be of no use and the organization's goals would remain a theoretical desire rather than an achievable plan. Organizations are thus not only dependent on a clear and well-thoughtout strategy, execution of strategy is of equal importance. It is during execution that the formulated strategy is translated into the concrete actions that result in the strategy being realized. Without a link between strategy and action, it is impossible for organizations to ensure that the work of employees contributes to the organization executing the strategy and achieving strategic goals. Although this area has been the subject of previous research, there are still few organizations that execute their strategy, they thus fail to translate strategy into action. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe how an organization, Scania Oskarshamn, translates its overall strategy into action. The purpose of the study is also to identify and analyze which factors are critical for translating strategy into action. Method: In order to answer the study's research questions, a qualitative research strategy with a deductive approach was chosen. A case study with Scania Oskarshamn as the case company was chosen as the research design. The empirical data was collected from 14 semi-structured interviews with managers and employees, which were supplemented with internal documents, participatory observations, and email correspondence. Secondary data were collected from Scania's website, the organization's annual report 2020 and previous empirical studies of Scania. Conclusion: There are three main areas which support Scania when translating its strategy into action. These are the design and breakdown of strategic plans, continuous follow-up, and the Scania Production System (SPS). Based on the factors that have been found critical for Scania's translation of its strategy into action, in relation to the factors that previous research has highlighted as critical, this study has found 15 critical factors which are important for translating strategy into action. These factors are categorized under; basic conditions, strategy work and the role of the leader. They are critical for acting in accordance with the strategy, continuous improvement, and commitment, and in the long run for strategy to be translated into action.
