Stress and Coping in the Prediction of Psychological Distress among HIV-Seropositive African American Women

Abraham-Pratt, Indira Leila 10 May 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine general life stressors and emotion-focused and problem-focused coping strategies as prospective predictors of psychological distress in a sample of 209, low-income, urban, HIV-positive, African-American women. A secondary aim was to determine whether coping strategies mediated the relationship between life stressors and psychological distress. This study involved a secondary data analysis from a longitudinal National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded, randomized, family therapy efficacy study (Structural Ecosystems Therapy [SET]; Szapocznik et al., 2004). Participants completed self-report measures, including the Brief Symptom Inventory, Brief Cope (adapted), and Difficult Life Circumstances, as measures of psychological distress, problem-focused and emotion-focused coping, and general life stressors, respectively. These measures were completed at baseline, and at 3, 6, 9, and 18-month follow-up assessments. Results from longitudinal, cross-lagged, path model analyses provided some modest support regarding the hypothesis relating amount of life stressors to subsequent level of psychological distress symptoms. Results of the coping path models failed to support the hypotheses relating problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping to subsequent distress (Hypotheses 2 and 3). Furthermore, the lack of direct associations between coping strategies and distress prohibited the examination of problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies as possible mediators in the relationship between life stressors and psychological distress. Results and implications are discussed.

Evolution des propriétés physiques des sédiments et des zones de failles du front de déformation à la zone sismogène : cas de la marge de Nankai / Evolution of the sediments and fault zones physical properties from the deformation front to the seismogenic zone : study of the Nankai margin

Conin, Marianne 03 May 2011 (has links)
This study is focused on the upper limit of the seismogenic zone in the Kumano transect of the Nankai margin in relation with the construction of the wedge. The first step was to determine the stress orientations and amplitude within the wedge from borehole breakouts analysis. We show the striking presence of a trench normal extension zone behind the splay fault in a wedge dominated by a strike-slip stress regime. Locally an extensional stress regime is also observed in the slope sediment of the outer part of the wedge. In a second part of this work, we used porosity corrected from water bound to clay minerals to study the compaction state of the sediments and to quantify the amount of erosion in the slope sediments. Results also highlight the existence of past erosion related to the activity of the splay fault. In a third part, the observation of deformation style within sediments showed that erosion could explain the distribution of dilatant and compactive structures within the wedge. Finally, we show, based on mechanical modeling, that the splay fault slow slip rate over the last million year, and the presence of an extension zone landward of the splay fault, could both be explained by a pause in the accretion and a weak décollement beneath the outer wedge.

[en] ANALYTICAL MODELING OF DEFORMATION BANDS GENERATION IN SANDSTONE RESERVOIRS / [pt] MODELAGEM ANALÍTICA DA GERAÇÃO DE BANDAS DE DEFORMAÇÃO EM RESERVATÓRIOS ARENÍTICOS

LEANDRO GUEDES CARVALHO 12 August 2021 (has links)
[en] The permeability prediction is a critical step in the flow of geological modeling and reservoir characterization and is essential for the development of production projects. Sub-seismic structures called deformation bands (BD) can reduce permeability up to six orders of magnitude in relation to the host reservoir sandstone and can thus act as total or partial barriers to the fluid flow. The present work intends to contribute in the determination of the hydraulic behavior of reservoirs proposing an analytical geomechanical model for BD s prediction in sandstone reservoirs. In practical terms, the objective is to predict whether the conditions in a given portion of a siliciclastic hydrocarbon deposit have been reached for the localization of BD or how close it is to a possible generation of this feature in order to suggest an analysis of the permeability reduction. The proposal extends to the computational implementation of the method and its application in a case study of a poorly consolidated sandstone reservoir on the brazilian continental margin, rich in BD. The results confirmed the viability of the method by showing that the portion of the analyzed reservoir reached the mechanical conditions for the genesis of BD from the geological age entitled Oligocene (~ 23 to 35 Ma) for the established scenarios.

Stabiliserade/solidifierade muddermassor bakom spont i en marin miljö / Stabilized/solidified dredged material behind a sheet pile wall in a marine environment

Bergman, Fredrik, Ramel, Christian January 2021 (has links)
When expanding existing ports, the relatively new method ofvstabilized/solidified (S/S) contaminated dredged material can be used in connection with a sheet pile wall. The S/S method is used to physically bind the contaminants or trap them and to improve the strength and deformation properties of the masses. Instead of depositing these, often polluted, dredged materials at a high price, it can be reused in the port construction as a buildingmaterial. There are few reports that deal with stabilized masses in connection with a sheet pile wall and how they interact, which means that there are no clear guidelines for how the method should be used. In addition, there are great uncertainties about how the development of the undrained shear strength increases over time and how it can be taken into account in the design and therefore the method cannot be used in an efficient manner. The undrained shear strength is evaluated as half of the compressive strength. The purpose of the study is to be able to forecast how the earth pressure against a sheet pile wall depends on the properties of the S/S-treated dredged material. Furthermore, a design methodology for S/S material in connection with sheet pile wall has been proposed. To answer this, a literature study has been done to gather background information and create a deeper understanding of the subject. A parameter study was also done in the FEM-program PLAXIS. The results from the parameter study could then be compared with previous field and laboratory experiments where the changes in properties over time have been studied. With this as a background, a design methodology could be proposed. The dredged masses can initially be likened to a liquid which causes a hydrostatic pressure against the sheet pile wall. Over time, the masses will harden and thereby increase the shear strength, this means that the horizontal earth pressure decreases at the same time as a vertical loading takes place, which increases the horizontal earth pressure. From the literature study, it could also be seen that the final shear strength and growth of the dredged material depends on the amount of binder and combination, which in turn must be adapted to the water content and the organic content. From the parameter study, it can be concluded that one of the factors that has a greater impact is how high the shear strength is after the first hardening when all dredged materials have been pumped in place and the relationship between the shear strength and modulus of elasticity and the development. In the proposed design method, it is recommended that drainage type undrained A and material model Mohr-Coulomb should be used in simulations. As there are such large uncertainties regarding S/S dredged materials, the Mohr-Coulomb material model is considered to be fully sufficient compared with other more advanced models as there are large uncertainties regarding the input data. Drainage type undrained A is the more advanced drainage type of the three tested and takes the materials friction angle into account. Which will give a better representation.
