The development of learning activities for teaching music using indigenous Tswana children's songs in Botswana primary schools : principles and practice.

January 2009 (has links)
This study aimed to intervene in the challenges emanating from the launch of a new primary schools Arts syllabus which is geared towards reflecting Batswana cultural values in Botswana primary schools. The launch was hurried, before all necessary provisions were made (Phuthego, 2007). Consequently, there is dire need of relevant resource materials, teaching/learning activities and qualified teachers, who can effectively translate the syllabus objectives and aims. The aim of this study was hence to devise learning activities based on Tswana children’s songs as the selected materials to realize the objectives of the existing primary school music syllabus for Botswana primary schools lower standards. This has been done through analysis of Tswana children’s songs, studying their nature and inherent values, on the basis of which culturally relevant teaching and learning activities have been designed for use in Botswana primary school music curriculum. In order to validate the need for a consideration of culturally relevant teaching and learning activities in Botswana primary schools, the study explored the music of the Batswana prior to and during colonialism and how it manifests itself in the current curriculum delivery. The study has also considered the current education policy’s aspirations of instilling cultural values in learners, as well as grooming a rounded citizen who can adjust to the challenges of the 21st century corporate world. The study employed content analysis through which twenty-four children’s songs were studied for their inherent values and musical concepts. Eclectic learning activities which take cognizance of the holistic approach prevalent in Tswana music making milieu, combined with the Rhythm Interval Approach (Akuno, 2005) which advocates the use of temporal and tonal elements of sound as the basic ingredients from which other musical elements such as form, texture, timbre harmony and dynamics are derived were employed. The activities were then tested in standards 1 to 4 to address the music syllabus. The results showed that the songs completely address the objectives stipulated in the syllabus and moreover, provide some extra-musical concepts which are embedded within them. The results also revealed that the Rhythm Interval Approach is applicable in Botswana lower primary schools, hence implicitly suggesting its further possible applicability to upper primary classes because the syllabus has been designed in a spiral fashion, where the same musical concept like ‘sound’ appears at different levels of intensity across all classes. The study recommended that The Revised National Policy on Education’s aim of grooming a locally and internationally compatible learner can be enhanced through learners’ awareness and appreciation of their culture on the basis of which they can later on spread their wings, to other world cultures. Tswana children’s songs have been observed to have a potential to act as a bridge to ease the transition of cultural pedagogy of rote learning to current paradigm of symbolic representation and abstraction of concepts. The study devised twenty learning activities to facilitate the use of these songs for curriculum delivery in standard 1-4. / Thesis (M.Mus.)-University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban, 2009.

Atividade de estudo e consciência crítica do professor : processo de intervenção formativa histórico-cultural /

Simões, Jéssica Priscila January 2019 (has links)
We start from the understanding that historical-cultural psychology has important assumptions that can help in understanding human development and thus contribute to the direction of educational activities, considering the understanding in this perspective that it is through education that the human being appropriates the cultural framework, humanizing itself. Systematic observations were made in the classroom of the 2nd year of elementary school of a municipal school in Birigui / SP, where we understood as one of the most general problems the question of the organization of school activities that took place in a fragmented way: teacher and students performing distinct and disconnected activities, showing influences of the pedagogical conceptions that guide the practice, sometimes of a traditional nature, sometimes constructivist, or as an amalgamation of these with practical experiences that interpose depending on the demands presented in the classroom. The problem of our research was to know: can the teacher's understanding of teaching and study activities as a unit favor the change of its activity and the consequent reorganization of this? The broad objective of this work was to understand the relationship between the study activity and the development of the teacher's critical conscience, which... Da escola para a banca de sapatos: a atividade de estudo de uma criança trabalhadora / From school to the shoe-box: study activity of a working child

Bellini, Aretha Amorim 31 May 2017 (has links)
This master\'s dissertation consists in analyzing the development of the study activity in the school context of a working child and to understand to what extent the organization of teaching makes possible the appropriation of understanging and school knowledge in the life of the child who studies and works. Our general objective was to understand how the working child (represented in the study by José) relates to knowledge, that is, how the processes of cultural mediation of José in study activity are carried out. Among our specific objectives, we seek to reflect on the concepts of childhood, work and knowledge, in the historical-cultural perspective, being the pillars of organization for our discussion and analysis. We presume that the school has the social function of offering organized activities that reproduce the historical movement of human knowledge, in such a way that the social meaning becomes personally meaningful for the individual. To achieve this objective, we use a pedagogical experiment, based on the theoretical-methodological postulates of the Learning Orientation Activity (LOA) in the area of mathematics. We also carried out observations in the classroom, analysis of didactic materials and two semistructured interviews with the working child as a purpose to analyze their different experiences in school space. The collected data were taken from the interviews, by the experiment and by the use of field data. For the analysis of the data, tables were prepared with cutouts of the experiments, interviews and observations in the room, situations that made it possible to observe how José related to the study activity. The results of the pedagogical experiment showed the presence of situations of signification of the activity, which allowed its formation, favoring the development of the child concretely, in line with an emancipatory and critical education.

Children's conceptions of nature as influenced by a residential environmental education program

Rebar, Bryan M. 09 June 2005 (has links)
The majority of research in environmental education (EE) has focused on measuring knowledge, attitudes, and behavior using quantitative tools and methods. Few studies have attempted to elicit and characterize children's conceptions of the environment or nature, particularly those resulting from a residential EE experience, which contextualize knowledge, attitudes, and may be used to predict behaviors. Therefore little is known about how physical, socio-cultural, and personal dimensions are reflected in conceptual learning in the context of a guided outdoor program. This study begins to address this relative knowledge void by employing qualitative and phenomenological methods in a grounded theory approach. Interviews, writings and drawings on the topic of nature were collected from 5th grade students before and after a three-day residential outdoor school program conducted on the Oregon coast. Students' responses were analyzed in terms of breadth and depth of their nature conceptions. Individual students' additions to the emergent categories of breadth, including new organisms, habitats, processes, and non-living things, were used to measure change in the breadth of students' nature concepts. Change in depth of students' nature concepts was measured by means of emergent hierarchical typologies representing ideas included in students' understanding of nature. Factors affecting students' learning, including the themes students use to frame their interpretations of nature, emergent misconceptions, references to TV and books, students' interest, and weather, are discussed in terms of their impact on the breadth and depth of students' nature conceptions. Findings indicate almost universal gains in breadth and modest gains in depth of students' nature concepts. Children's preconceived ideas about nature, particularly an idealized view in which nature is seen as the opposite of human environments, appear to play an important role in learning. / Graduation date: 2006

ATIVIDADES DE ESTUDO MEDIADAS PELAS TECNOLOGIAS DIGITAIS DA INFORMAÇÃO E COMUNICAÇÃO / MEDIATED STUDY ACTIVITIES BY DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

Borim, Gladis 30 July 2015 (has links)
From the theoretical basis of the socio-historical psychology, the present research investigated how the study activities mediated by the use of digital technologies of information and communication contributed to the development in students. Therefore, the survey aimed to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate interdisciplinary study activities on the issues related to "History and Afro-Brazilian Culture" in the context of Federal Law 10,639 of January 9, 2003, extended and ratified by Law 11,645 of March 10 2008. The subject of choice was linked to this obligation in the aforementioned legislation and the need for updated teaching materials to develop the content for the racism and the black resistance movements in interdisciplinary perspective, given the lack of these in textbooks sent to public schools through the National Textbook Plan. The research was developed in the class last year of elementary school, at Castro Alves Municipal Elementary School. The methodology used was the Action Research, because it seeks the intervention planned with specific objectives and actions in the search for solution of the problem raised and, being based on participation and cooperation of those involved. Thus, we structured study activities, in order to assist and guide the pedagogical actions of the teacher in the teaching-learning organization mediated technologies. The collected data was verified the presence of analysis, reflection and mental planning the activities carried out by students as well as greater participation, interest and debate on the issues proposed which allowed to state that the study activities, mediated by technology, enabled new learning and evidence psycho-intellectual development, and the organization and implementation of these generated the achievement of the necessary theoretical knowledge as well, and also a transformation of the acting subject itself in terms of values and attitudes. This research resulted in a script of study activities and checklist of actions and operations on the subjects of history and African-Brazilian culture.

Become aware of this process is relevant in a space in which the organization of teaching in mathematics can be more one of the factors that contribute to the process of humanization of the subjects involved in the teaching-learning dyad. The current model of education has proved inefficient for emancipation of children maintaining the conditions of alienation developed in the historical path, due to the economic system we live. Think about a humanizing education, that is, capable of humanizing the child and overcome this alienation that exist in the capitalist education; implies thinking of a way to organize the teaching in which subjects are participants of the learning process. The Mathematics Club is a project that is an example of this mode of organization. This bias, we considered three pillars: collaborative work, the problem situation (triggering learning) and the playful character. Based on cultural-historical theory and activity theory, with foundations in the historical - dialectical materialism, we conducted our research with a group of twelve children during development of a Mathematics Club at a municipal school in Goiânia. The teaching experiment was the research methodology used in this research. Our research instruments sought to explain the reasons for children during all the time of the project. The unfolding of the research were to prove the importance of collaborative work in human development and the role of play activity in children's learning. In addition, we noted the Mathematics Club as teaching organization model able to put the subject moving in the direction of the transformation reasons for the study activity.

The dialogical research (Bakhtin; Volóchinov) was carried out in a public school in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, with nine nine- and ten-year-old full-time children for seven months in 2017. The methodology used to generate the data was the educational-dialogical experiment and was implemented in three stages: on-site observation of the children, the development of the didactic unit plan (Libiliar and Freitas) and the delivery of the book produced by them. The learning project was called by the children Imaginary Tales and Real Stories, the same name as the book in which they recorded their literary creations. The data collection instruments were filming, audio recordings, photos, games and oral and written speeches. Data were organized in folders, in the researcher's notebook, and then transcribed. The presentation and analysis were organized in five thematic nuclei: Border games: activity of the creative imagination; literary creation: activity of the creative imagination; authorship: tessitura of the ideological sign; authorship: responsiveness and responsibility; and authorship: singularity traits. The analysis based on Geraldi, Jakubinskij, Brait, Faraco, Duarte, Zilberman, besides the authors already mentioned, made possible the following conclusi...
