Don’t let my Heart bleed! : An event study methodology in Heartbleed vulnerability case.

Lioupras, Ioannis, Manthou, Eleni January 2014 (has links)
Due to the rapid evolution of technology, IT software has become incredibly complex. However the human factor still has a very important role on the application of it, since people are responsible to create software. Consequently, software vulnerabilities represent inevitable drawbacks, found to cost extremely large amounts of money to the companies. “Heartbleed” is a recently discovered vulnerability with no prior investigation that answers questions about the impact it has to the companies affected. This paper focuses on the impact of it on the market value of the companies who participated in the vulnerability disclosure process with the help of an event study methodology. Furthermore our analysis investigates if there is a different affection to the value of the company based on the roles those companies had in the process. Our results suggest that the market did not punish the companies about the existence of vulnerability. However the general negative reaction of the market to the incident reflects the importance of a strategic vulnerability disclosure plan for such cases.

Establishing rates of binge drinking in the UK: anomalies in the data

McAlaney, John, McMahon, J. January 2006 (has links)
Yes / Aims: Several studies funded by the UK government have been influential in understanding `binge drinking¿ rates in the UK. This analysis aims to establish consistency between results and clarify UK rates of binge drinking. Method: The relevant sections of these surveys were compared: the Scottish Health Survey (SHS) 1998, the General Household Survey (GHS) 2002 and the Health Survey for England (HSE) 2003. In addition the methodology used by the Health Protection Agency in the Adult Drinking Patterns in Northern Ireland (2003) was compared to the approach used by the SHS, GHS and HSE. Results: Marked differences were observed between the results of the GHS 2002 and both the SHS 1998 and the HSE 2002 despite each using a similar methodology, with the HSE 2003 reporting a rate of binge drinking in young males of 57%, and the GHS a rate of 35%. These difference may be largely attributed to variations in the criteria in binge drinking in each study. These differences in interpretation do not appear to have been acknowledged. Indeed several key alcohol harm reduction documents made inaccurate citations of previous surveys. Conclusion: The media rhetoric on escalating rates of binge drinking in the UK should be regarded with caution until trends are based on standardized recording and reporting .

Applying systems modeling and case study methodologies to develop building information modeling for masonry construction

Lee, Bryan 08 June 2015 (has links)
Building Information Modeling, or BIM, is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility that serves as a shared resource for information for decision-making throughout the project lifecycle (National Institute of Building Sciences, 2007). The masonry construction industry currently suffers from the lack of BIM integration. Where other industries and trades have increased productivity by implementing standards for software-enhanced workflows, masonry construction has failed to adopt information tools and processes. New information technology and process modeling tools have grown in popularity and their use is helping to understand and improve construction processes. The Systems Modeling Language, or SysML, is one of the process modeling tools we can use to model and analyze the various processes and workflows. In this research, a case study methodology was applied to analyze the masonry construction industry to understand the current state of masonry construction processes and workflows. This thesis reviews these concepts and the applied case studies which are necessary to move forward with the implementation of BIM for masonry.

Parental Perceptions and Experiences of Physical and Emotional Violence between Siblings: A Mixed-Methods, Comparative Case Study

Perkins, Nathan 02 May 2014 (has links)
Sibling violence is a common occurrence for many children yet this form of family violence has received minimal attention in research compared to other forms of child maltreatment. With parents as an integral component in the lives of many children, parental perceptions and experiences of violence between siblings are important to understand. Furthermore, with the increased variation in family structures within society, inclusion of multiple types of families in research is necessary to encompass a broad understanding of sibling violence. This case study included seven parents from four different family structures to examine their perceptions and experiences of physical and emotional violence between siblings. Three phases of data collection including both quantitative and qualitative data gathered information about participants’ experiences with siblings in childhood, witnessed behaviors between children, behaviors associated with sibling violence and sibling rivalry, and labels used to refer to violence between siblings. Participants were also presented with several case scenarios depicting various sibling interactions in which they processed the degree to which they found the behaviors violent or non-violent. Findings indicate that family structure is less important than past and present environmental and contextual factors in understanding participant differentiation between problematic and non-problematic behaviors between siblings. Data from all three phases helped in the construction of a parental decision-making model of sibling interaction that included consideration of past experiences, children factors, the context of interaction, and family rules when classifying behaviors. Implications of the findings for social work direct practice, policy aimed at addressing violence between siblings, advocacy through parental education, social work education, and future directions for research in the area of sibling violence are presented.

Inter-organisational cooperation and network influences in destination marketing: the case of www.purenz.com

Bhat, Sushma Seth January 2008 (has links)
Individual businesses from a variety of sectors network and work together to create a successful tourist experience. The interdependencies of organisations producing this experience make cooperation a necessity in destination marketing. Despite the centrality of cooperation and networking in tourism marketing relatively little empirical research has been conducted in this area. This thesis uses the case of the development of the official NZ website www.purenz.com (purenz) to examine the role, form and process of inter-organisational cooperation in destination marketing. Drawing on in-depth interviews with thirty- five industry members involved in establishing and managing www.purenz.com between 1999 and 2006 this thesis makes a number of contributions to both the marketing and tourism literature. The thesis confirms that there are considerable difficulties in broadening the marketing role of the national tourism organisation (NTO) beyond destination promotion. The study also finds that destination marketing and destination management are still perceived as separate processes in the NZ tourism industry. In addition, the results of this study provide support for the view that the social networks in which firms are embedded have a considerable influence on inter-organisational alliance formation. This thesis contributes to the development of theoretical approaches to the study of cooperation in destination marketing by identifying five levels of cooperation in destination marketing: passive acceptance, support, alignment, contribution and pooling. The levels are based on the different types of input that may be required from stakeholders by the NTO. The level of cooperation desired in a particular context is a strategic choice to be made by the destination marketing management. This choice is affected by the existing characteristics of the tourism network; the NTO leaders’ perception of the need for and value of cooperation in destination marketing and also by the extent of shared understanding of the scope of destination marketing management among tourism stakeholders. The research points to the need to develop further the network characteristics affecting cooperation in destination marketing. Further work is also needed to develop a more complete profile of the five levels of cooperation identified by this study and the investment required to achieve each level of cooperation.

This dissertation was developed in the Professional Postgraduate Program in Management and Assessment of Public Education (PPGP) of the Center for Public Policies and Education Evaluation of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (CAEd / UFJF). The objective of the study is to analyze the difficulties in the process of implementation of the Pedagogical Proposal of the Study Methodology Component from the full-time schools from Manaus, approved in 2015 by the State Education Council (CEE-AM), under the resolution number 16/2015, aiming to subsidize the pedagogical activities of the teacher who teaches the component Methodology of the Study. The aim of this study is to understand the possible factors that make difficult the implementation of the Pedagogical Proposal of Methodology of the Study on the Final Years from the Elementary School in the school context. The methodology adopted involves a qualitative approach that was used as instruments of data collection in the semistructured and individual interview with the former director of the Department of Policy and Educational Programs, with the former manager of the Elementary Education Management and with two pedagogical advisors from the Elementary School; the questionnaire was the instrument intended for teachers who teach the Study Methodology component, from the perception of these actors it was possible to delineate consistently, reflections about the problem. The analysis was anchored in theoretical discussions by Eduardo Condé (2012) who contributed to the idea of the implementation of public policies in the context of integral education. In the discussions about/from the full-time curriculum, it was searched the theoretical basis in authors like Ana Maria Cavaliere (2002), Jaqueline Moll (2012), Moacir Gadotti (2009), Miguel Arroyo (2011) and Gimeno Sacristán (2000). In this way, Pedro Demo (2004), Elizabeth Teixeira (2005), Philippe Parrenoud (1995) and Ivani Fazenda (2013), were the basis to the studies on teaching Study Methodology in a reflective perspective on the act of studying and the interdisciplinary pedagogical practice. Based on this analytical course, it was possible to visualize the existing challenges that make it difficult to implement the Proposal of the component in the school context, such as: lack of knowledge about the integral education policy and the pedagogical proposal of Study Methodology, difficulty in undertaking pedagogical actions aimed at interdisciplinarity, the need for continuous training for the teacher and the pedagogical team. After these observations, we propose an Educational Action Plan (PAE) with proposals aimed at the continuous formation of teachers and the pedagogical team about the conception of integral education and curriculum in a perspective of integral education, as well as on the pedagogical work with a interdisciplinary profile; in addition to the creation of mechanisms to assist in the implementation of the proposal, giving the teacher access to tools that subsidize their practice, and to provide spaces for dialogue and exchange of experiences.
