Modeling households' long-term mobility and residential decisions and short-term time use/travel choices :group decision-based approaches

Yao, Mingzhu 26 June 2019 (has links)
Understanding household long-term decisions concerning residential location/relocation, car ownership and short-term activity travel choices are crucial for land use and transport planning. However, when addressing these issues, multitudes of choice models applying individual or unitary household decision-making mechanisms have dominated in transport studies, ignoring the interactions among household members in consensual decision making in real situations. To promote the investigation of these issues from a group decision-making perspective, this study explores the applicability of various group decision-making approaches to investigate multiple long-term decisions and short-term choices. Specifically, this thesis has four main research objectives: 1) adopt a utilitarian approach to develop an integrated model that links household members' consensual long-term decisions like housing, vehicle ownership and short-term activity-travel decisions like time use, explicitly capturing expenditure tradeoff for long-term decisions on housing and car ownership; 2) employ the Nash bargaining approach to model household members' consensual car ownership choice and examine this choice from the perspective of household time allocation; 3) apply an egalitarian bargaining approach (capture household members' concern for equity) to model household residential relocation choice, make a comparative study among this approach, Nash bargaining approach, and conventional utilitarian approach, and then accommodate these heterogeneous group decision mechanisms in a unified modeling framework; 4) examine the impacts of vehicle usage rationing policy on household car ownership and spouses' time allocation patterns. The database that serves for empirical applications of the formulated models is from a two-wave household activity-travel diary survey conducted in Beijing. This thesis contributes to current literature by adopting new approaches to investigate various group decision-making mechanisms among household members, comparing and assessing the predictive performance of different group decision approaches, as well as explicitly capturing household's long-term expenditure tradeoff. Insights and findings from this study are helpful for gaining profound understanding of spatial distribution of residence, household car ownership and individuals' activity-travel patterns, which will be conducive to the formulation of relevant policies for sustainable urban development.

Sustainable Development of Istanbul Built Environment

Ünal, Burak January 2014 (has links)
Marmara Sea and Black Sea connected with renowned Bosporus surround Istanbul, the city, which owns the privilege of bridging Europe and Asia. Besides such inland seas; forests and wetlands fragmented around and in the city maintain the natural cycle in the region. However, Istanbul as a fast developing urban area witnesses environmental issues like many other urban areas in global scale. Rapid economic and population growth of the city increase the pressure on above mentioned natural resources. Sustainable development of built environment is one of the best solutions in order to mitigate environmental damages of urban areas. The solution comes with green construction projects and systems yet the city and the market itself have barriers to block or slow the process of sustainable development. Identification of such barriers and reviewing international sustainable development practices paves the way for generating recommendations for environmentally friendly urban expansion in Istanbul. Survey targeting market professionals was conducted to identify sustainable development barriers in Istanbul and in order to address such barriers the thesis refers to conducted interviews and international practices presented in the literature review. The thesis draws economic, market and governmental recommendations which are particularly focused on financial incentives, raising awareness and enacting green laws involving all stakeholders of construction and real estate market.

Governing Urban Agriculture: : Internal, External and Contextual Factors / Gällande urban landbruk: : interna, externa och kontextuella faktorer

Fillion, Lila January 2021 (has links)
ElectriCITY, a citizenship-driven economic association aims at making Hammarby Sjöstad the most climate-friendly district in Sweden. Their next step is to integrate urban agriculture into the neighborhood. Urban agriculture is, by definition, growing or producing food in a city. It allows, among other things, to increase access to locally grown food for the population nearby and to educate city dwellers on many aspects of agriculture. This project’s goal is to offer a large overview of urban agriculture and its different governance characteristics. In addition to the literature review and to have a better understanding of the relevant stakes of this field, the project was based on six different case studies that introduce various types of urban agriculture governance: SweGreen (Stockholm), Odlande Stadsbasarer (Stockholm), Nature Urbaine (Paris), the WandelGarten (Freiburg), the Tillsammansodling group of Viva (Gothenburg) and Greenhouse (Malmö). The study was built on desk studies, interviews, and two participant observations. It had a focus on the different governance characteristics of the urban agriculture approaches (internal, external, and contextual) based on a distinction between market-oriented projects and non-market-oriented ones. The findings showed similarities between the case studies on different points such as their approaches to sustainability or the need to have external partners and political support. They showed as well the importance to take into account the external and contextual factors for projects to be well-integrated into the urban system.

Citylab: To be or not to be? : A case study of the implementation of Citylab in the municipal urban planning process in Norrtälje and Helsingborg / Citylab: Att vara eller icke vara?

Mandolin, Nira, Hultman, Per January 2023 (has links)
Sustainability certifications are becoming a frequently used method to deal with problems associated with sustainability. Citylab is a Swedish system that has been developed to guide municipalities in their work with planning sustainable neighbourhoods. The purpose of this study is to examine how Citylab affects large urban development projects in relation to municipal urban planning. In order to examine the purpose, a case study has been conducted, where two study objects in Norrtälje municipality and Helsingborg municipality were examined. The former municipality did only follow the framework of the system, while the latter municipality did proceed with the whole certification process. Norrtälje Hamn and Östra Ramlösa are both unique in their contexts regarding their extent and can therefore be seen as flagship projects in their respective municipalities. The study indicates that Citylab is a method that facilitates the inclusion of sustainability aspects regarding urban planning, but problems linked to social sustainability and follow-up procedures exist. In both projects there is a lack of cultural aspects and therefore these problems had to be dealt with outside of the framework of the system. Another similarity is the difficulty regarding the involvement of the entire organisation, otherwise problems connected to transferring of information can arise. Cooperation is a central part of the Citylab process, which is considered as challenging but educative in both of the examined municipalities. The urban planning process is prolonged in regard to time when a certification according to Citylab is conducted, which creates opportunities for more rigorous examination in specific problems. This can result in higher quality in the urban planning process, in the same time as it leads to higher costs. Lastly it is discussed if sustainability certifications will be a useful tool in future urban planning projects or if existing certified urban planning projects will have the same influence in regard to urban planning.

A framework for sustainable adaptive reuse of industrial buildings : Testing the developed adaptive building reuse framework on the case of The Plant in Chicago, USA / En ram för hållbar adaptiv återanvändning av industribyggnader : Testar det utvecklade ramverket för anpassningsbar återanvändning av byggnaden i The Plant i Chicago, USA

Hampel, Friedrich January 2020 (has links)
Sustainable urban development is one of the dominant movements in the urban planning realm in the 21st century. It focuses mainly on improving current life while keeping future effects to an extent with which future life is not restricted. Adaptive reuse can play an important role in this movement towards more sustainability due to its simple reuse approach. But to improve the process of adaptive reuse a holistic framework is needed. This thesis first develops a holistic framework from recent research literature with the later aim of testing it in form of a case study – focusing on The Plant in Chicago, USA. Six themes were identified as the six to consider for a holistic perspective on adaptive reuse – economic, environmental, technical, context, social, and regulations and policy. Site visits, interviews, GIS-analysis, and desk-based study build the core methods to test the framework and produce the findings. Capital investment, market demands, reconstruction costs, and the influence on the local economy are economic factors that determine the economic performance of the adaptive reuse project The Plant. These findings show the applicability of the framework and further point out possible synergies and conflicts that can be utilized and avoided in future processes. The research indicates, for example, conflicts between environmental performance and economic expenses. Overall, the results indicate the applicability of the framework and the needed consideration of the identified synergies and conflicts for the positive performance of the adaptive reuse process and thus a positive contribution to sustainable urban development.

Sustainable strategy as a source of competitive advantage for hotels: A case study of Ørestad area with focus on the Crowne Plaza Hotel

Charyev, Georgy January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this Thesis is to conduct an analysis describing the sustainable strategy available for hotels, evaluating its potential to create competitive advantage and exploring how its implementation influences other actors in the industry specifically and the whole area development generally. The case study of Ørestad district has been chosen with focus on the Crowne Plaza hotel. The Crown Plaza is the first hotel in Ørestad area that has employed the sustainable strategy into its operational activities. According to the analysis, the sustainable efforts of the hotel include environment-friendly technologies, waste management, use of organic materials, organization of social benefits and events for their employees. The conducted interviews with Crowne Plaza’s employees showed the relationship between hotel’s strategy and employees’ satisfaction. Furthermore, the study has explored the ability of sustainable efforts to create unique reputation for the hotel. The latter, in turn, attracts the business customers who consider sustainable hotel as valuable partner for their own reputation. All in all, as the sustainable strategy enhances the profitability, it is considered a source of completive advantage.Despite the benefits of the strategy, the competing hotels are not willing to imitate the concept. Low demand from private guests, variety of alternative options, high risks and investments are main reasons of indifference to sustainability from their side. As a result, this reluctance restricts the sustainable spillover effect and corresponding urban development in the area. However, as the government and construction agencies are interested in “green” trend and the Crowne Plaza is willing to share its practices, the sustainable urban development opportunities are still possible in the future. The recommendations to the Crowne Plaza include providing the tangible evidence of the sustainability in the hotel and continuing the introduction of environmental and social efforts. In turn, other hotels should start employing the sustainability in its strategic activities because the demand for it will only grow in the future. Only when all players in the area will realize the need for a change, the sustainable urban development will be achieved in Ørestad district.

No. of bitstreams: 1 PATRICIA DA SILVA CORREA.pdf: 5889076 bytes, checksum: a91c3855b67f05d5798fc5abd166fc79 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-08-07 / Urban parks, sustainable development of the cities signs are spaces for, among other activities, the Environmental Education. There are several existing parks in Goiania and one of the main ones is the Flamboyant Park, which has its appropriate structure for environmental events. However, the progressive drought Sumidouro stream spring, located in the park, which occurs as a result of lowering of the water table; due to the misuse of land by large construction companies, points to a contradiction: a place of preservation and contemplation of nature houses a serious environmental impact. Given this fact, the Environmental Education plays an important role in the search for solutions that mitigate or terminate this issue, educating and directing the population for efficient decision-attitude. In this sense, this research aims to analyze how environmental education can be effective in sustainable urban development, even in the most serious cases of environmental impact, using the example of Flamboyant Park. To understand the reasons why this space can be considered an ideal place for environmental education, we used theoretical review seeking to understand their origins, meanings and uses. It was also necessary to conduct research on the meaning, causes and consequences of groundwater drawdown in the Flamboyant Park area. Through history, formation and structure of the Park and also field research made it possible to learn how environmental education is being worked on site. Through interviews with regulars and locals , with authorities and environmental professionals , revealed the importance of this type of education to a satisfactory sustainable urban.

Ågren, Axel January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze how the term socially sustainable development is conceptualized within a local city planning context. In the southern parts of Norrköping employees within the municipality’s city planning office are working on the creation of a new neighborhood, given the name Kneippen syd. The aim is to create a socially sustainable neighborhood. The empirical data for this study is collected through six qualitative interviews, observations at the planned location for Kneippen syd and after attendance at four seminars with urban development as the main themes. The results of this study show that the reoccurring themes of socially sustainable development are consisting of visions of an urban mixture and improved connections within the city. The motives behind the themes have its foundation in the understanding of the city as segregated. Modernistic city planning consisting of spatially separated neighborhoods are understood as part of the cause to why segregation within the city is existing. In the plans of Kneippen syd the opposite characteristics of modernistic urban planning are found as the solution to the problems with the segregated city, were mixture in housing, services and recreation opportunities are emphasized. To a large extent the creation of this new urban area are based on definitions and constructed images of how the city should. This raises the need to reflect upon the question why certain definitions and images are chosen instead of others and what images of the city that are neglected in this process.
