Romance inovador, sobretudo graças à incorporação da psicanálise à literatura, La coscienza di Zeno, de Italo Svevo, é também a obra-prima de um autor situado em diversas intersecções: ele escreveu de um local de fronteira entre várias culturas; numa língua que era sua por adoção; na transição entre dois séculos; em meio à alteração das configurações políticas e econômicas da Europa; em um período de intensa transformação das idéias e da forma de narrar. Este estudo busca levantar subsídios para melhor situar o romance em relação a seu tempo e ao complexo ambiente intelectual do fim do século XIX (caracterizado pelo conflito e pela coexistência de cientificismo e irracionalismo, positivismo e pessimismo), bem como em relação à tradição do romance europeu. Para isso, conta com o auxílio da crítica literária e sócio-histórica, além dos artigos e ensaios de Svevo. / A breakthrough novel specially regarding its incorporation of psychoanalysis into literature , La coscienza di Zeno, by Italo Svevo, is also the masterpiece of an author placed in many intersections: he wrote from the boundaries of different cultures; in an adopted language; during the transition of two centuries; amid changes at the political and economical settings of Europe; and through the transformation of ideas and the narrative. This study aims to gather elements to better relate La coscienza to the complex intelectual environment of the late 19th century (marked by the conflict and the coexistence of scientism and irrationalism, positivism and pessimism), as well to the tradition of european novel. To this purpose, it benefits from the literary and sociohistorical criticism, and from Svevos articles and essays.

A correspondência ativa de Italo Svevo, publicada pela primeira vez em 1966, oferecese ao crítico como um emaranhado de problemas que podem ser pensados a partir de múltiplas abordagens: histórica, linguística, literária, entre outras. Ao reconhecermos no texto epistolar do escritor triestino uma série de temas desenvolvidos também em suas obras literárias, admitimos a hipótese de que as cartas exercessem para ele o papel de laboratório de escrita, no qual podia exercitar sua língua, seus procedimentos literários e ainda construir para si uma imagem de artista. Para demonstrar a validade de nossa hipótese, investigamos as personas epistolares construídas ao longo das correspondências do escritor e como elas contribuíram tanto para a criação de personagens literárias, quanto para a elaboração de uma cenografia autoral. Em seguida, fizemos uma análise comparativa entre algumas cartas de Italo Svevo à esposa e alguns trechos de seu romance A consciência de Zeno, verificando em que medida os temas eram reproduzidos ou transformados no interior da estrutura romanesca. Ao final desta dissertação, apresentamos a tradução anotada de algumas cartas do escritor como complemento às observações aqui desenvolvidas. / Italo Svevo\'s epistolary, first published in 1966, offers itself to the critic as a tangle of problems that can be interpreted using multiple approaches: historical, linguistic, literary etc. After recognizing in the letters of the Triestino writer a series of themes also developed in his literary works, we proposed the hypothesis that the letters became for him a writing laboratory. He could exercise his language, his literary procedures and still construct for an image of himself as an artist. In order to demonstrate the validity of our hypothesis, we investigated the epistolary personae constructed throughout the correspondence of the writer and how they contributed both to the creation of literary characters and to the elaboration of an authorial scenography. After that we did a comparative analysis between some of Italo Svevo\'s letters to his wife and some excerpts from his novel Zeno\'s Conscience, verifying to what extent the themes were reproduced or transformed within the novel structure. At the end of this dissertation, we present the annotated translation of some letters of the writer as a complement to the observations developed here.

Depuis le XVIIe siècle, l’étude de la notion d’ennui a connu une évolution constante en Occident qui lui a permis de se détacher des autres concepts auxquels elle était préalablement associée, notamment ceux de mélancolie, de tædium vitæ et d’acédie. Au XXe siècle, le discours sur l’ennui en philosophie, en sociologie et en psychanalyse s’intéresse spécialement aux rapports entre l’homme et le monde à partir des représentations individuelles et collectives du temps, de l’action et de la vocation. Ces trois composantes de l’ennui aident à comprendre comment ce phénomène s’est répandu dans les sociétés postmodernes et comment il est devenu une forme d’expérience (Erfahrung) pour l’individu capable de se confronter à ses propres limites en tant que sujet agissant et ennuyé. Les cinq romans retenus pour le corpus littéraire du XXe siècle (Senilità de Svevo, Le Puits d’Onetti, Malone meurt de Beckett, L’Ennui de Moravia et La Télévision de Toussaint) analysent l’ennui à travers la mise en abyme de la création. En effet, les cinq héros se heurtent au paradoxe caractéristique de l’ennui profond qui les incite à s’engager dans la voie de l’action créatrice tout en les enfermant dans l’inertie contemplative de leur milieu immédiat. L’ennui permet aux héros-ennuyés de comprendre leur situation dans le monde, d’appréhender l’instant présent et d’aller au-delà de la représentation première de ce qu’ils considéraient leur réalité. Leur expérience de l’ennui, rendue manifeste à travers leur création, permet aux héros d’accéder enfin au statut de configurateurs de monde, au sens de Heidegger. / Since the 17th century, the study of the concept of boredom has known a continual evolution in the Occident, which allowed it to be separated it from other associated concepts such as melancholy, tædium vitæ and acedia. In the 20th century, the discourse on boredom in philosophy, sociology and psychoanalysis took an interest in the relationship between the individual and the world, based on the personal and collective representations of time, action and vocation. These three components of boredom help to understand how this phenomenon spread through postmodern societies and how it became a form of experience (Erfahrung) for the individual able to bring himself face to face with his own limits as an acting subject and as an ennuye. The five novels chosen for the literary corpus of the 20th century (Svevo’s As a Man Grows Older, Onetti’s The Pit, Beckett’s Malone Dies, Moravia’s The Empty Canvas and Toussaint’s Television) analyze boredom through a mise en abyme of the creation. Indeed, the five heroes face the characteristic paradox of boredom that encourages them to engage in the path of the creative action while being restrained by the contemplative inertia of their immediate environment. Boredom enables the heroes-ennuyes to understand their situation in the world, to comprehend the present moment and to go beyond their first representation of what they called their reality. Their experience of boredom is made manifest through their creation that allows them to finally reach the status of world-forming, in Heidegger terms.
