O nosso objetivo neste trabalho é examinar em que medida a psicanálise está presente na principal obra de Italo Svevo, La coscienza di Zeno, abordando as concepções psicanalíticas empregadas no texto, diretamente ou em variados graus de transfiguração, e verificando se surgem tensões relevantes em relação a elas. O campo de atuação da psicanálise é muito amplo, de forma que nos restringimos basicamente a dois setores da sua atuação que julgamos cruciais para o exame proposto. O principal para o nosso trabalho é aquele no qual ela se constitui como sistema de compreensão do psiquismo: pretendemos determinar qual é o uso literário de tal sistema no romance, tanto na construção dos seus personagens quanto na constituição da sua narração. Também é importante para o nosso trabalho que levemos em consideração a psicanálise como método terapêutico, principalmente ao analisarmos o último capítulo do livro, no qual o protagonista Zeno efetivamente é psicanalisado pelo doutor S. e o processo de cura torna-se de grande relevância. / Our goal in this paper is to examine the extent to which psychoanalysis is present in the main work of Italo Svevo, La coscienza di Zeno, addressing psychoanalytic concepts used in the text, directly or in varying degrees of transfiguration, and verifying that arise relevant tensions about them. The scope of psychoanalysis is very broad, so basically restricted ourselves to two sectors of its operation that we consider crucial for the proposed examination. Central to our task is its operation as psyche understanding system: we intend to determine what the literary use of such a system in the novel, both in the construction of his characters as in the constitution of his narration. It is also important for our task we take into account the psychoanalysis as a therapeutic method, especially when we look at the last chapter of the book, in which the protagonist Zeno is actually psychoanalyzed by doctor S. and the healing process becomes highly relevant.

O homem retratado por ela será marcado por frustrações, rodeado pelo vazio, atormentado pela angústia de viver. Assim nos é apresentado o narrador Zeno Cosini, cujo caráter é colocado em dúvida, já no prefácio, por seu suposto psicanalista e editor do texto. Enigmático e ambíguo, o senhor Cosini recorrerá, ao longo da enunciação de suas memórias, ao uso de várias máscaras para velar sua(s) identidade(s). Procurando o tempo todo ocultar-se, disfarçar-se, Zeno deixa em seu leitor um grande ponto de interrogação quanto à sua identidade e também o desafio de tentar responder Quem é Zeno, afinal?. Assim, o objeto desta dissertação é investigar a(s) possível(eis) identidade(s) do narrador Zeno Cosini. Seguindo os meandros mais profundos de seu discurso, o presente trabalho procura desvelar, desmascarar o senhor Cosini que, por trás de suas máscaras, de seu discurso irônico e ambíguo, esconde uma identidade tão fragmentada e múltipla quanto a do homem de sua época. Não pretendemos estabelecer um único rótulo a este narrador, mesmo porque isso seria impossível. Nosso principal objetivo é rastrear seus passos, ouvir suas vozes dissonantes para, então, chegarmos a uma sentença acerca de sua constituição identitária, erigida através da narrativa. / Published in 1923, the novel La coscienza di Zeno (Confessions of Zeno/Zeno\'s conscience) is important for building a narrative which brings in its core the modernity which disrupts and transgresses literary model´s rules. The man described in it will be branded by frustrations, surrounded by nothingness, tormented by life´s anguish. In that context the narrator Zeno Cosini is introduced, whose character is dubious since the preface by his supposedly text editor and psychoanalyst. Puzzling and ambiguous, mister Cosini calls upon the use of many masks to cover his identity throughout his memories. By trying to hide and cover himself all the time, Zeno leaves to his reader an intriguing question about his identity, as well as the challenge of trying to answer Who is Zeno, anyway?. Therefore, this paper aims at investigating Zeno Cosini\'s possible identities. Following the deepest ways of his speech, the following paper seeks unveiling, uncovering Cosini that behind his masks, his ironic and ambiguous discourse hides such a fragmented and multiple identity as mankind of his age. It is not intended to label this writer even because it would be impossible. Our main goal is to trace his steps, hear his dissonant voices in order to reach a conclusion over his personality traits and identity structured through the narrative.

Nossa tese é a de que as obras revisam o conceito de Identidade Nacional Italiana ao tematizar a crise dos personagens protagonistas e/ou narradores nas obras estudadas, num contexto político-social em transformação acelerada na Itália do final do século XIX, início do século XX, por meio da ironia e da paródia. A trajetória dos personagens e os elementos narrativos que os caracterizam estimulam a discussão sobre o conhecimento de si mesmo, instaurando questionamentos a respeito dos postulados empreendidos por autores da tradição literária italiana que tinham por objetivo construir o sentimento de patriotismo e Identidade Nacional para os italianos. Nossa hipótese de trabalho fundamenta-se no conceito cunhado por Linda Hutcheon intitulado “Metaficção historiográfica”, por observarmos que os textos se oferecem como discursos que entrelaçam as funções do literário, do histórico e do teórico. Tomamos como base, ainda, autores da Historiografia literária italiana, da história, teóricos da teoria literária, bem como aqueles que fazem parte da fortuna crítica do escritor. Entre eles, destacamos: De Sanctis (1997), Raimondi (1998), Campbell (2007, 1990), Eliade (1963, 1069, 1972), Hobsbawm (1995, 2008, 2014), Hall (1999), Anderson (2008), Galasso (1997, 2012), Bechelloni (1991), Bollati (1983) e Della Loggia (1998). / The present study aims at analysing the composition of the antihero character in the novels Una Vita (1892), Senilità (1898) and La coscienza di Zeno (1923), by Italo Svevo. Our hipothesis is that those novels review the concept of national identity by bringing about the protagonists’ and the narrators’ crisis within a context of accelerated political and social transformation in Italy, by the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, by the means of irony and parody. The performance of the characters and the narrative elments of the story stimulate the discussion on self consciousness, raising questions regarding statements made by traditional italian authors seeking to fabricate the feeling of patriotism and National Identity for italian people. Our hypothesis is based on the concept of historiographic metafiction by Linda Hutcheon. This theory was chosen as we percieved that the novels can be seen as a discourse that assemble literary, historical ant theoretical functions. We also based our study on works by authors from Italian literary historiography, historical studies, literary theory as well as those that constitute critical readings of Italo Svevo’s work. The most important theoretical studies used in our analysis are by De Sanctis (1997), Raimondi (1998), Campbell (1990, 2007), Eliade (1963, 1069, 1972), Hobsbawm (1995, 2008, 2014), Hall (1999), Anderson (2008), Galasso (1997, 2012), Bechelloni (1991), Bollati (1983) e Della Loggia (1998).

A ênfase da análise empreendida está nos elementos referentes às autobiografias ficcionais e à metaficção, que dão ensejo também ao estudo sobre o foco narrativo e o tempo / This thesis presents a study about the novels A life and Zeno’s conscience and some sparse chapters, i.e. “Un contratto”, “Le confessioni del vegliardo”, “Umbertino”, “Il mio ozio” and “Il vecchione” from the Italian author Italo Svevo. Based on the analysis of the texts, the work shows how these narratives are examples of literary narcissism, in which the employed artifice to do Literature becomes the narrated theme itself. Furthermore, the study shows a clear evolution of Svevo's work in relation to the critic artifact and the consciousness of the creative work, since this thesis examines three different moments of his work and demonstrates an undeniable maturity of these issues. The emphasis of the undertaken analysis relies on the constituents relating to the fictional autobiographies and to the metafiction, giving rise also to the study of narrative focus and time

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 1991. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to point out and elaborate the affinities, culturally as well as textually, between the two Italian authors, Italo Svevo and Carlo Michelstaedter. Furthermore, it is the object of this study to demonstrate how, implicitly, the two authors provide an answer, each in his own way, to the question of "una vita degna di essere vissuta" - "a life worthy of being lived". The central theme in this regard concerns the distinctive notions that each author has in respect of 'Ihealth" and "disease", and "life" and "death", as well as how these notions correspond to the implicit search in their respective writings for "perfection", "authenticity" and "liberty". / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie het ten doel am die kulturele en tekstuele affiniteite tussen die lwee Italiaanse outeurs, Ital0 Svevo en Carlo Michelstaedter, uit te wys en uitvoerig te bespreek. Daarbenewens, is die voorneme van hierdie studie om te wys hoe elk van die tv:ee outeurs, implisiet, '0 aotwoord verskaf op die kwessie van "una vita degna di essere vissuta" - II 'n lewe wat waardig is om geleef te word". Die sentrale tema in hierdie verband het betrekking op die onderskeidelike opvattings wat elke auteur se werk bevat ten opsigte van "gesondheid" en "siekte", en "Iewe" en "dood". Daar word ook getoon hoe hierdie opvattings betreffende die implisiete soeke ten opsigte van "volmaaktheid", "outentisiteit" en ''vryheid" in hul onderskeidelike tekste korrespondeer.

Seppur premiata da una fortuna minore rispetto a quella occorsa alle opere narrative, la produzione teatrale di Svevo rappresenta una parentesi determinante della sua carriera letteraria: il triestino, infatti, ci ha lasciato un corpus teatrale significativo, composto da tredici copioni, distribuiti su un arco biografico che si estende dal 1880, anno dell’Ariosto governatore, fino ad arrivare, con La rigenerazione, agli anni immediatamente precedenti alla morte. Si consideri, inoltre, che quella per il teatro fu una passione che accompagnò Svevo per l’intera esistenza, sia come frequentatore di spettacoli tanto in Italia quanto all’estero, sia come critico per le più importanti testate triestine. Per questi motivi, è parso opportuno in questo lavoro di ricerca tornare su un tema – quello delle commedie di Svevo – meno considerato dalla critica. Nella prima sezione della tesi, intitolata Svevo e il teatro, dopo un rapido profilo della critica e della storia delle rappresentazioni, si è cercato di delineare i confini del rapporto che unì Svevo al mondo del palcoscenico. Nella seconda sezione di del lavoro, intitolata Trasgressione, ribellione e falsificazione nel teatro sveviano, sono state prese in analisi le pièces del triestino; le commedie sono state raggruppate in base a tre nuclei tematici: trasgressione, ribellione e falsificazione. / Although rewarded by a minor fortune than that which occurred to the novels, Svevo’s plays are a determinant parenthesis of his literary career: in fact, the writer has left thirteen commedies, distributed over a biographical arch which extends from 1880, the year of Ariosto governatore, up to, with La rigenerazione, the years immediately preceding his death. Consider, too, that the theater was a passion that accompanied Svevo for the whole of life, both as a frequenter of shows in Italy and abroad, both as a critic for the most important newspapers in Trieste. For these reasons, it seemed appropriate in this research back on a theme - that of Svevo’s plays - less regarded by critics. In the first section of the thesis, entitled Svevo e il teatro, after a short outline of the criticism and of the history of representations, we tried to delineate the borders of the relationship that joined Svevo to the world of the stage. In the second section of the work, entitled Trasgressione, ribellione e falsificazione nel teatro sveviano, were taken into analysis the plays; comedies were grouped according to three themes: transgression, rebellion and forgery.

The question that forms the foundation of this project is quite simple: how can space help us discuss literature and vice versa? The chapters of this dissertation explore the writing of Francesco Dall’Ongaro, Italo Svevo, Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini, and Marisa Madieri, each of whom addresses spatial concepts in their textual representations of the northern Adriatic region. Utilizing the related yet distinct approaches of spatial literary studies and geocriticism, paired with intellectual history, I find that the northern Adriatic region can be construed as a literary creation comprised of distinct, resistant narratives. The four texts under discussion promote a particular narrative of the region, revealing different strategies for its literary construction. Furthermore, this project aims to demonstrate that the spatially-attentive critic, no matter the discipline, has a vital role in deconstructing the process by which spaces enter the imaginary through cultural production.
