Woven in Stone: The Use of Symmetry Analysis Methodology to Determine Underlying Patterns of Symmetry in the Polychrome Painted Decorations on Some Athenian Korai

Many studies of the Archaic Greek kore focus exclusively on stylistic considerations in an attempt to date these statues more and more accurately. Other studies propose various meanings for the kore. Each of these approaches can be extremely subjective, with the result that the large body of extant literature about the kore tends to be repetitive and argumentative in nature, and, with several exceptions, does not advance the understanding of the kore to any appreciable degree past where it had developed by the 1980s. I use a different, more empirical methodology to study a small group of korai, found in the 1880s near the Erechtheion on the Athenian Akropolis. Symmetry analysis of the patterns painted onto these korai at the time of their creation reveals both consistency of pattern use through the period of seventy years between c560 BCE and c490 BCE, as well as some anomalous patterns. I tabulate the various patterns, as well as their frequency of occurrence, and briefly speculate that there is a correlation between the pattern consistencies and anomalies and events in the known historical record, such as the mid-6th century rule by the Peisistratids and the democratic reforms of Kleisthenes. Applications of symmetries and conservation laws to the study of nonlinear elasticity equations

Mooney-Rivlin hyperelasticity equations are nonlinear coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) that are used to model various elastic materials. These models have been extended to account for fiber reinforced solids with applications in modeling biological materials. As such, it is important to obtain solutions to these physical systems. One approach is to study the admitted Lie symmetries of the PDE system, which allows one to seek invariant solutions by the invariant form method. Furthermore, knowledge of conservation laws for a PDE provides insight into conserved physical quantities, and can be used in the development of stable numerical methods. The current Thesis is dedicated to presenting the methodology of Lie symmetry and conservation law analysis, as well as applying it to fiber reinforced Mooney-Rivlin models. In particular, an outline of Lie symmetry and conservation law analysis is provided, and the partial differential equations describing the dynamics of a hyperelastic solid are presented. A detailed example of Lie symmetry and conservation law analysis is done for the PDE system describing plane strain in a Mooney-Rivlin solid. Lastly, Lie symmetries and conservation laws are studied in one and two dimensional models of fiber reinforced Mooney-Rivlin materials.

Lie Analysis for Partial Differential Equations in Finance

Weather derivatives are financial tools used to manage the risks related to changes in the weather and are priced considering weather variables such as rainfall, temperature, humidity and wind as the underlying asset. Some recent researches suggest to model the amount of rainfall by considering the mean reverting processes. As an example, the Ornstein Uhlenbeck process was proposed by Allen [3] to model yearly rainfall and by Unami et al. [52] to model the irregularity of rainfall intensity as well as duration of dry spells. By using the Feynman-Kac theorem and the rainfall indexes we derive the partial differential equations (PDEs) that governs the price of an European option. We apply the Lie analysis theory to solve the PDEs, we provide the group classification and use it to find the invariant analytical solutions, particularly the ones compatible with the terminal conditions.

Platform development of body area network for gait symmetry analysis using IMU and UWB technology

Having a device with the capability of measure motions from gait produced by a human being, could be of most importance in medicine and sports. Physicians or researchers could measure and analyse key features of a person's gait for the purpose of rehabilitation or science, regarding neurological disabilities. Also in sports, professionals and hobbyists could use such a device for improving their technique or prevent injuries when performing. In this master thesis, I present the research of what technology is capable of today, regarding gait analysis devices. The research that was done has then help the development of a suggested standalone hardware sensor node for a Body Area Network, that can support research in gait analysis. Furthermore, several algorithms like for instance UWB Real-Time Location and Dead Reckoning IMU/AHRS algorithms, have been implemented and tested for the purpose of measuring motions and be able to run on the sensor node device. The work in this thesis shows that a IMU sensor have great potentials for generating high rate motion data while performing on a small mobile device. The UWB technology on the other hand, indicates a disappointment in performance regarding the intended application but can still be useful for wireless communication between sensor nodes. The report also points out the importance of using a high performance micro controller for achieving high accuracy in measurements.
