Veiksmažodinių abstrakčių daiktavardžių semantinės ir sintaksinės funkcijos / Semantic and syntactic functions of deverbal abstract nouns

Šatienė, Salomėja 25 May 2005 (has links)
The present paper is an attempt to examine the functional potential of deverbal abstract nouns in the clause. The verbal to nominal transfer has long been recognized as an important phenomenon in English. However, the peculiarities of usage of deverbal abstract nouns as well as their potential for expressing a range of semantic and syntactic functions have been little analysed in linguistic literature. The paper examines the concept of deverbal abstract nouns as non-congruent representation of processes, provides an overview of semantic and syntactic functions in the clause, and presents a detailed inventory of the range of semantic functions expressed by deverbal abstract nouns and their syntactic realization in the clause based on the linguistic evidence drawn from the corpus under investigation. The research was based on the semantic approach for interpreting the clause as representation of a process suggested by systemic functional linguistics. The examination of the scientific discourse text determined that deverbal abstract nouns were used in clauses of all types of processes, the most frequent being material and relational types; the semantic potential of deverbal abstract nouns was not limited to specific semantic functions as they were used to perform a full range of semantic functions in the clause; the most frequent semantic roles expressed by deverbal abstract nouns were those of the Circumstance, the Carrier and the Affected; the syntactic potential of deverbal... / This research analyzes some aspects of the question of the factors through which it can be considered that a sentence is inadequate concerning the interaction event in which it is used and the grammar of the specific language, according to a functionalist view of language as a system flexible when faced with usage pressure. It proposes a typology contemplating the types of inadequate usages found in the corpus, related to a frame in which the inadequate usage is seen as the non-satisfaction of a functional demand. Considering that pragmatic and semantic motivations compete for the morphosyntactic expression (DUBOIS, 1987), the basic hypothesis is that competing motivations can be left unsolved so that an inadequate construction is produced. The analysis is based on the theory of Functional-Discourse Grammar (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008). This theory comprehends the grammar as part of a wider model of verbal interaction, so that it can account of the cognitive, interactive and textual factors which have an impact on the grammatical aspects of the predication. The corpus takes a set of presumably inadequate sentences collected from a bank of high school studentsâ texts.

Forma a funkce u substantiv v češtině: vztah pádu a syntaktické funkce. Na materiálu korpusu současné psané češtiny (SYN2005) / Form and function of nouns in Czech: relation between nominal case and syntactic function. Based on a synchronic written corpus of Czech (SYN2005)

Jelínek, Tomáš January 2012 (has links)
The case in Czech is the basic morphological means by which nouns express their function in a sentence. The objective of this thesis is to describe, from a frequency point of view, the relation between form and function of nouns, or, more precisely, how frequently cases (both simple and prepositional) are used to realise syntactic functions in sentences. The thesis is based on one of the largest corpora of written synchronic Czech: 100-million-token corpus SYN2005. In order to obtain data on frequencies of syntactic functions of nouns in relation to their cases, we annotated the corpus SYN2005 with a dependency syntactic annotation. For this annotation, we adopted the format of the analytical layer of the Prague Dependency Treebank. The syntactic annotation has been performed by a stochastic parser: the MST parser. Since the reliability of this annotation was not high enough, we have built an automatic correction module, which identifies errors of syntactic annotation in the output of the stochastic parser and corrects these errors by means of linguistic rules. We have implemented 26 different rules, but annotation errors have been reduced by merely 6-8%. However, this correction module can be further developed. It can be used to correct the output of any dependency parser trained on the data from...
