PUC Campinas / The present dissertation work has as main objective analyses the Data communication networks for Data Centers, that have undergone a major technical evolution in recent years due to problems and limitations of conventional networks, such as lack of network availability, poor performance, inefficient use of installed network components, complexity and agility in the provision of new applications. These and other problems motivated the development of new technologies more flexible and configurable according to the particular need of each client. Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology found in most network equipment and vendors addresses these issues and brings more efficiency and simplicity to the provisioning of new network resources. This work presents a method for implementing SDN in Data Center in Brazil and also a comparative that analyzes the conventional network model and the SDN based model. This comparison is made based on functional aspects such as provisioning, Quality of Service (QoS), security and others. In order to compare the two technologies, a scenario was created with several network nodes and simulated the provisioning of a new application with several network requirements. The result obtained shows that the systematics can be applied to clients that wish to implement new networks for Data Center or migrate their conventional networks to the SDN model in a structured way, mapping all technical and business needs for network implementation, creating a database testing, determining the most appropriate solution for the environment and testing it in a controlled environment.

ZAJIŠTĚNÍ ZPĚTNÉHO ODBĚRU ELEKTROZAŘÍZENÍ V ČESKÉ REPUBLICE / Ensuring take-back of the Electrical and Electronic Equipment in the Czech Republic

Jáklová, Zuzana January 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyse and assess the effectiveness of functioning of the take-back system of the electrical and electronic equipment within the Czech Republic. This thesis deals in the first place with a general view on the waste management. It is subsequently followed by a detailed interpretation of the Act No. 185/2001 Coll., on Waste with focus on the issues discussed in this thesis. On the basis of the 2005 amendment of the Act on Waste the producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment are obliged to guarantee the take-back, separate collection, processing, reuse and disposal of the end-of-life products launched to the Czech market. Most producers and importers have created collective systems with the purpose of joint fulfilment of their legal obligations. Next part of this thesis focuses on the examination of the six Czech collective systems. With greater attention the thesis deals with the activity of the collective system ELEKTROWIN a.s. The results of its activities are assessed using the method of comparison with the electrical and electronic equipment producers association for recycling ENVIDOM. ENVIDOM acts as a collective system in Slovakia. The thesis is concluded by assesing the successfulness of the Czech Republic to meet the goal of collection of the end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment set by the European Union. A comparison of results achieved with the results of other European countries was conducted.

Power System Data Compression For Archiving

Das, Sarasij 11 1900 (has links)
Advances in electronics, computer and information technology are fueling major changes in the area of power systems instrumentations. More and more microprocessor based digital instruments are replacing older type of meters. Extensive deployment of digital instruments are generating vast quantities of data which is creating information pressure in Utilities. The legacy SCADA based data management systems do not support management of such huge data. As a result utilities either have to delete or store the metered information in some compact discs, tape drives which are unreliable. Also, at the same time the traditional integrated power industry is going through a deregulation process. The market principle is forcing competition between power utilities, which in turn demands a higher focus on profit and competitive edge. To optimize system operation and planning utilities need better decision making processes which depend on the availability of reliable system information. For utilities it is becoming clear that information is a vital asset. So, the utilities are now keen to store and use as much information as they can. Existing SCADA based systems do not allow to store data of more than a few months. So, in this dissertation effectiveness of compression algorithms in compressing real time operational data has been assessed. Both, lossy and lossless compression schemes are considered. In lossless method two schemes are proposed among which Scheme 1 is based on arithmetic coding and Scheme 2 is based on run length coding. Both the scheme have 2 stages. First stage is common for both the schemes. In this stage the consecutive data elements are decorrelated by using linear predictors. The output from linear predictor, named as residual sequence, is coded by arithmetic coding in Scheme 1 and by run length coding in Scheme 2. Three different types of arithmetic codings are considered in this study : static, decrement and adaptive arithmetic coding. Among them static and decrement codings are two pass methods where the first pass is used to collect symbol statistics while the second is used to code the symbols. The adaptive coding method uses only one pass. In the arithmetic coding based schemes the average compression ratio achieved for voltage data is around 30, for frequency data is around 9, for VAr generation data is around 14, for MW generation data is around 11 and for line flow data is around 14. In scheme 2 Golomb-Rice coding is used for compressing run lengths. In Scheme 2 the average compression ratio achieved for voltage data is around 25, for frequency data is around 7, for VAr generation data is around 10, for MW generation data is around 8 and for line flow data is around 9. The arithmetic coding based method mainly looks at achieving high compression ratio. On the other hand, Golomb-Rice coding based method does not achieve good compression ratio as arithmetic coding but it is computationally very simple in comparison with the arithmetic coding. In lossy method principal component analysis (PCA) based compression method is used. From the data set, a few uncorrelated variables are derived and stored. The range of compression ratio in PCA based compression scheme is around 105-115 for voltage data, around 55-58 for VAr generation data, around 21-23 for MW generation data and around 27-29 for line flow data. This shows that the voltage parameter is amenable for better compression than other parameters. Data of five system parameters - voltage, line flow, frequency, MW generation and MVAr generation - of Souther regional grid of India have been considered for study. One of the aims of this thesis is to argue that collected power system data can be put to other uses as well. In particular we show that, even mining the small amount of practical data (collected from SRLDC) reveals some interesting system behavior patterns. A noteworthy feature of the thesis is that all the studies have been carried out considering data of practical systems. It is believed that the thesis opens up new questions for further investigations.

Load allocation for optimal risk management in systems with incipient failure modes

Bole, Brian McCaslyn 13 January 2014 (has links)
The development and implementation challenges associated with a proposed load allocation paradigm for fault risk assessment and system health management based on uncertain fault diagnostic and failure prognostic information are investigated. Health management actions are formulated in terms of a value associated with improving system reliability, and a cost associated with inducing deviations from a system's nominal performance. Three simulated case study systems are considered to highlight some of the fundamental challenges of formulating and solving an optimization on the space of available supervisory control actions in the described health management architecture. Repeated simulation studies on the three case-study systems are used to illustrate an empirical approach for tuning the conservatism of health management policies by way of adjusting risk assessment metrics in the proposed health management paradigm. The implementation and testing of a real-world prognostic system is presented to illustrate model development challenges not directly addressed in the analysis of the simulated case study systems. Real-time battery charge depletion prediction for a small unmanned aerial vehicle is considered in the real-world case study. An architecture for offline testing of prognostics and decision making algorithms is explained to facilitate empirical tuning of risk assessment metrics and health management policies, as was demonstrated for the three simulated case study systems.

Prognostics and health management of power electronics

Alghassi, Alireza January 2016 (has links)
Prognostics and health management (PHM) is a major tool enabling systems to evaluate their reliability in real-time operation. Despite ground-breaking advances in most engineering and scientific disciplines during the past decades, reliability engineering has not seen significant breakthroughs or noticeable advances. Therefore, self-awareness of the embedded system is also often required in the sense that the system should be able to assess its own health state and failure records, and those of its main components, and take action appropriately. This thesis presents a radically new prognostics approach to reliable system design that will revolutionise complex power electronic systems with robust prognostics capability enhanced Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) in applications where reliability is significantly challenging and critical. The IGBT is considered as one of the components that is mainly damaged in converters and experiences a number of failure mechanisms, such as bond wire lift off, die attached solder crack, loose gate control voltage, etc. The resulting effects mentioned are complex. For instance, solder crack growth results in increasing the IGBT’s thermal junction which becomes a source of heat turns to wire bond lift off. As a result, the indication of this failure can be seen often in increasing on-state resistance relating to the voltage drop between on-state collector-emitter. On the other hand, hot carrier injection is increased due to electrical stress. Additionally, IGBTs are components that mainly work under high stress, temperature and power consumptions due to the higher range of load that these devices need to switch. This accelerates the degradation mechanism in the power switches in discrete fashion till reaches failure state which fail after several hundred cycles. To this end, exploiting failure mechanism knowledge of IGBTs and identifying failure parameter indication are background information of developing failure model and prognostics algorithm to calculate remaining useful life (RUL) along with ±10% confidence bounds. A number of various prognostics models have been developed for forecasting time to failure of IGBTs and the performance of the presented estimation models has been evaluated based on two different evaluation metrics. The results show significant improvement in health monitoring capability for power switches. Furthermore, the reliability of the power switch was calculated and conducted to fully describe health state of the converter and reconfigure the control parameter using adaptive algorithm under degradation and load mission limitation. As a result, the life expectancy of devices has been increased. These all allow condition-monitoring facilities to minimise stress levels and predict future failure which greatly reduces the likelihood of power switch failures in the first place.

No. of bitstreams: 1 AnnaCA_DISSERT.pdf: 1713036 bytes, checksum: 3c9ee62eca8f387db57d2214ac357913 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-28 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / In the current conjuncture, the environmental factor has been changing the position of companies that are practicing or minimally adopting environmental management. Such tool has been used by companies to face the problems caused by solid waste, in particular green coconut waste, which is constantly among the material discarded by society (companies/ consumer). It is a typical tropical fruit whose fresh water is very benefic for human health, and its popularization has caused a progressive increase of its consumption. Following this stream of thought, this present work came up with an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities SWOT analysis on green coconut solid waste management at two agribusiness companies in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil, aiming to know the challenges and the potentials of this kind of waste. According to the approach of the problem, this work fits a descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative research. The data collection was obtained by a questionnaire and a structured interview, in order to evaluate the strategic posture of agribusiness companies through SWOT analysis, which is an English acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The SWOT analysis is an effective tool to analyze the internal and external environment of an organization. This tool contributes to locate the company at the environment in question and when well applied it enables the detection of mistakes, the strengthening of correct procedures, the avoidance of threats, and the bet on opportunities. The studied agribusiness industries have very similar profiles, such as a long business life span, and a strategy that extends the useful life of the fruit, by using its waste for the manufacturing of new subproducts. In both, the daily quantity of waste resulted of this process reaches approximately 20 thousand units of the fruit in high season, being necessary a focus directed at use and/or treatment of these waste. Further to SWOT analysis, it was ascertained that the agribusiness company A works through a defensive marketing strategy and acts vulnerably, in other words, unable of acting before this market segment, for it has decided to stop using the waste due to a lack of equipment and technology. On the other hand, the agribusiness company B has incorporated an offensive marketing strategy because even not possessing equipments, technology, and appropriated internal installations, it still insists on use and benefits of green coconut waste in its agribusiness. Thus, it is considered that the potential of green coconut waste management for the production of several subproducts reduces the impacts produced by inappropriate placement and generates profits in a short, medium and long term. Such profits being tangible and intangible, as the interest for sustainability actions is not only a matter of obtaining return on capital, but it is an important question in order to move on into business, since it is not enough to have quality on products and process nowadays. It is necessary to establish socio-environmental practices aiming the image of the company as the prevailing role on consumers buying decision / A causa ambiental, na atual conjectura, est? alterando o posicionamento das empresas que est?o praticando ou minimamente adotando a gest?o ambiental.
