Body is a biological system, but also a medium, through which an individual as well as their culture are actualized in the world. Both the individual and culture conceptualize the body in notions that, together with physical perceptions, constitute bodily experience. In studying ancient cultures, such as Mesopotamia, the actual bodily experience is lost for us, but the cultural notions can be reconstructed. The present thesis focuses on the notions of body and disease in Mesopotamian healing practice recorded in professional medical literature that was being canonized and copied since the late second millennium BCE. The collections of prescriptions called "therapeutic texts" are of main interest, since they present the healing procedure itself. In these texts, I analyzed the verbal descriptions of disease and healing as well as the physical treatment of the body with regard to general context and with focus on cases of fever. The thesis concludes, that the texts present the interaction between the body and the disease as spatial and physical, in their metaphors as well as in the prescribed treatment of the body and of surrounding space. in English Dissertation deals with the freak show culture in Prague and the Czech lands in a broader context of the modern discourses of dis/ability and the imaginations of the collective body of the Czech nation. Exhibitions of "Lilliputians", "Giants", "Siamese twins" and other "extraordinary" bodies are analyzed here as a part of the history of an international entertainment culture in the 19th-century Europe. The emphasis lays on the turn of the century, the decade that witnessed rash development both of the capitalist entertainment industry and the expert disciplines that dealt with the "ab/normal". I claim, that the popularity of freak shows in this period rested in their ability to articulate fears and ambitions of their visitors, both in their individual embodied experience and their imaginative belonging, notably their belonging to the collective body of the Czech nation. In four case studies, I focus on individual freak figures and analyze how the intersections of different axes of difference - ethnicity, gender, class - within the representation of "the extraordinary", coproduced certain notion of social order and power hierarchies that were closely intertwined with the imagined collective body of nation.

The aim of this thesis is to introduce BMC approach in relation to other body-oriented psychotherapies, to characterise its principles and techniques, the format of therapy and to analyze and assess it from a point of view of the basic questions of scientific validity of a psychotherapeutic modality. Further in this thesis we summarize the bodily anchored experiencing theory. The empirical part of this thesis is a quantitative study of relation of body awareness, depressive experiencing and the satisfaction with life. We also studied a relationship among body awareness and socio-demographical characteristics of respondents. We ascertained some statistically significant correlations pointing towards a link between the ability of body awareness and depressive experiencing and also with satisfaction with life. The findings of this empirical study point towards the usefulness of further systematical developing of the body awareness construct.

The dissertation aims at the analysis of the traditional linguistic worldview of the woman in Czech. Theoretically and methodologically, the dissertation follows from the modern Polish ethnolinguistics, i.e. a discipline focusing on the studies of language in relation to culture, which uses the term of "linguistic worldview", referring specifically to the ways in which the values and experience of the particular society have been written into its language. The aim of the dissertation is to reconstruct the image (the stereotype) of the woman in Czech, i.e. to reveal the structure of stereotypical characteristics related to the woman in the language and the culture. The attention was paid primarily to the traditional image, built in the centuries before the dramatic changes of the society and the women's role in modern times. Notre thèse porte sur Étienne Decroux, le créateur du mime corporel. Nous montrons que Decroux s’inspire à la fois du théâtre et de la sculpture pour concevoir son art du mime, qu’il définit comme la statuaire mobile. D’une part, il reprend le concept du masque de Jacques Copeau et celui de la sur-marionnette d’Edward Gordon Craig pour les transposer directement au corps. D’autre part, ses œuvres incarnent les formules de pathos observées dans les statues. La sculpture d’Auguste Rodin est une source d’inspiration centrale dans sa manière de représenter le corps sur scène. De plus, Decroux conçoit le corps comme une suite de prises de vues défilant devant le spectateur. Collaborant avec Étienne-Bertrand Weill qui photographie ses spectacles, il constitue une iconographie du mime pour mieux donner à voir le mouvement du corps en image. The main objective is to show that Decroux draws on both theatre and sculpture, thus conceiving his art of mime as the mobile statuary. On the one hand, he takes up the concept of mask put forward by Jacques Copeau and Edward Gordon Craig's ubermarionnette, transposing both concepts directly to the body. On the other hand, he embodies the pathos formulas observed in the statues. Decroux was heavily inspired by Auguste Rodin's sculptures in order to represent the body on stage. Moreover, Decroux conceives the body as a series of images which unfold before the audience. Working along with Etienne-Bertrand Weill who photographs his shows, he creates a relevant source of iconography of the mime that unveils the movement of the body in images. Finally, for Decroux, the body is a sculpting material. By identifying himself with the mythical sculptors, he brings forward the creative aspect of his art. Just as Pygmalion, he enlivens the body of his students and, as Prometheus, he transforms the society through his political art. The mobile statuary is then a key concept in the corporeal mime that goes from the conception of the movement on stage to the ideal and the universal in man. / Disertační práce se zabývá osobností Étienna Decroux, tvůrce projektu tělesného mima (mime corporel). Jejím cílem je dokázat, že se Decroux inspiroval divadlem i výtvarným uměním k vytvoření koncepce tzv. „pohyblivé sochy“ (statuaire mobile). Z divadla přebral koncept masky Jacquesa Copeau a koncept nadloutky Edwarda Gordona Craiga, aby je převedl přímo na tělo. Ze sochařství přejímal formule patosu, zejména se inspiroval dílem Augusta Rodina a jeho koncepcí tělesné figury. Decroux pojímal tělo jako sérii obrazů, které se odvíjejí před divákem. Ve spolupráci s fotografem Étiennem-Bertrandem Weillem, který dokumentoval jeho představení, vytvářel ikonografický soubor, jenž zobrazuje mimovo tělo v pohybu. Na druhou stranu chápal tělo jako materiál, který mim modeluje jako sochař. Decroux se ztotožňoval s mytickými sochaři, aby dal najevo svoji roli umělce a tvůrce. Jako Pygmalion „oživoval“ těla svých žáků a jako Prométheus přetvářel společnost svým uměním, které mělo politický náboj. „Pohyblivá socha“ (statuaire mobile) představuje klíčový koncept umění tělesného mima Étienna Decroux, který zahrnuje jak koncepci scénického pohybu, tak etické postavení člověka ve světě.

The thesis compares certain trends and characters in these monoteistic religions with reference to mutual influences between western and eastern culture, which have been continuing even nowadays. The main object of interest is a human body and its carnality as well as the stereotypes we have about this topic. This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of knowledge and ideas of pupils how they understand human organ systems. Knowledge is verified based on spontaneous production of children's drawings using a thematic didactic test. The thesis uses cross-sectional research involving a total of 118 pupils from the first to the fifth class of the primary school. For the research project, pupils were given a blank piece A4 sized paper and were asked to draw the organ systems in their body. Research tables have been created from a set of drawings and common characters. The results of the research show level of understanding of human organ systems in individual classes.

Jan Siřínek, The Scenic Principle in Psychotherapy Abstract This dissertation explores the effectivity of a targeted application of body/drama- oriented therapy in the act of inducing a corrective emotional experience. The term scenic- symbolic principle is introduced and meant to 1) ascribe symbolic significance to people, objects, or parts intrinsic to the therapy room; 2) enable these as roles for dramatization; and 3) employ the symbolic significance of physical contact and body motion. Therapeutic schools that use the scenic-symbolic principle are summarized. Detailed attention is given to Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor (PBSP) therapy, in which the scenic-symbolic principle serves as the central instrument in achieving a corrective emotional experience. After examining the theoretical concepts and intervention procedures of PBSP, this paper describes an experiment, in which 40 persons were randomly distributed between experimental and control groups (N = 20 for each group). The goal of the experiment was to achieve a change in attitude towards a job, task, or duty that the subjects were facing, in an effort to reduce negative emotions.
