Santos, Lázaro Aleixo dos January 2018 (has links)
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were prepared by electrodeposition technique on AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy in ethanol. Electrolysis of ethanol under constant voltage of 1200 V or 800 V is made by 3, 8 and 24 h. The DLC films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (MEV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrodeposited DLC films composed of small and compact grains and seem to be uniform, smooth and homogeneous with a structure influenced by the time and voltage applied. The XPS spectra of the prepared films indicated that carbon and oxygen are their main composition. Raman spectra of films showed the presence of two peaks located at 1373 and 1574 cm -1related to the D and G peaks, and they have the proportion of peak heights ID/IG equal to 0,71, which confirmed the formation of DLC film. These spectra confirmed the amorphous nature of all deposited DLC films. The electrochemical behavior shows a character of pores blockage with increase of immersion time (1h until 30 days) in 0,05 molL-1 NaCl solution of DLC film (electrodeposited at 1200 V by 24 hours) which shows a pseudo resistance due to corrosion products into pores of DLC film.

A Study Investigating the Experience of Teachers’ Innovative Adaptation of Teaching and Learning

Lowery, Andrea 01 December 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to identify and examine the technology-based instructional strategies and digital tools being used by teachers in grades 3-5 that engage children in problem-solving learning opportunities. The study included 11 purposely sampled participants from a school district in East Tennessee who responded to questions during a Zoom interview. Seven of the participants submitted artifacts to provide examples of how they have incorporated technology and problem solving in their classrooms. Participants provided information about the digital tools and technology-based instructional strategies they have used to enrich problem solving in their classrooms. Participants in the study communicated using group work as a primary instructional strategy when integrating technology to enrich problem solving. The participants discussed student engagement, creativity, real-world connections, and technology exposure for students when sharing their perceptions about how digital tools can enhance problem solving. When explaining how technology integration has adapted their curriculum, they shared how they use technology to provide quick feedback and differentiation. The researcher used Magana’s (2017) T3 Framework to code each example of technology as a translational, transformational, or transcendent use of technology and shared some examples of each.

Effect of Turbulence on the Passive Film Growth and Associated Durability of Aluminum Alloys in Simulated Seawater

Todoroff, Peter Kent 25 June 2018 (has links)
Turbulent fluid flow at high Reynolds numbers presents significant degradation risks to active-passive metals due to enhanced localized degradation phenomena. A multidisciplinary experiment was proposed to study the relationship between hydrodynamics in fully-developed pipe flow and both the growth and performance characteristics of passive films. Preliminary work was performed to set up (i) an environmental chamber for the experiment, (ii) design a custom wall shear stress sensor and constant temperature anemometer traverse system to monitor hydrodynamic conditions in-situ, (iii) monitor in-situ degradation through an array of ultrasonic thickness transducers, and (iv) acquire data and control the environment via a LabVIEW routine. A validation experiment was conducted on a 1220 mm long experimental section of 45.7 mm inner diameter AA2024-T3 tubing in simulated seawater. Extensive degradation was observed in-situ and confirmed with ex-situ techniques after sequential exposure to fully-developed turbulent flow at an expected wall shear stress of 10 Pa for 180ks (Reynolds number of 122,000) and then at 40 Pa for 630ks (Reynolds number of 262,000). No typical erosion-corrosion hydrological features were observed, however significant pitting and intergranular corrosion were observed with corrosion product caps covering 47% of the total ultrasonic transducers' measurement area. Passive film and pit growth were recorded via ultrasonic thickness measurements with an observed simultaneous decrease in dissolved oxygen content. The validation experiment successfully demonstrated the capability of the designed and constructed sensors for the proposed experiment. Numerous areas of suggested development and research were identified to ensure accuracy and improve interpretation of future experiments. / Master of Science

EVALUATING THE USE OF CEPHALOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS, PRESENCE OF A POSTERIOR CROSSBITE, THE BERLIN SLEEP QUESTIONNAIRE SCORE, AND RESULTS OF THE NOX-T3 SLEEP MONITOR FOR PREDICTING OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA IN THE ORTHODONTIC POPULATION: PART 1

Odhner, Kerri January 2014 (has links)
Introduction: Untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has deleterious effects on one's overall health. Recent literature suggests that craniofacial abnormalities, as noted on a lateral cephalometric radiograph (ceph) or clinically by the presence of a posterior crossbite, may be associated with OSA. Literature also suggests that if abnormal ceph measurements are noted or if a patient presents with a posterior crossbite, then further questioning about that patients sleep habits and snoring should be addressed. The primary purpose of this study is to explore any possible associations between ceph measurements, and/or presence of a posterior crossbite with OSA, as determined by the Berlin sleep questionnaire, in the orthodontic population. The second purpose of this research is to outline a part 2 follow-up study through administration of an at home sleep test, the Nox-T3 sleep monitor, to further validate presence of OSA. The overall goal is to see if the combined data from the Berlin score, the clinical presence or absence of a posterior crossbite, and standard orthodontic ceph measurements can increase the predictive value of patients in the orthodontic office who might be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. Methods: A total of 85 consecutive subjects who were already undergoing records in 5 private practice orthodontic offices around the greater Philadelphia area were recruited for voluntary participation in the study. A Berlin questionnaire, lateral ceph, and any noted presence of a posterior crossbite were collected on all subjects. 12 ceph measurements (SNA, SNB, ANB, Co-A, Co-Gn, A-Na perp, Pg-Na perp, SN-MP, FH-MP, Ba-SN, Wits, and MP-Hyoid) were traced by a second year orthodontic resident. 5 subjects were then selected using a random numbers table and given the Nox-T3 sleep monitor for self-administration to record their sleep for one night. Statistical analyses were run using SAS version 9.2 to evaluate any associations. Results: A total of 76 subjects completed data collection, whereas 9 subjects either failed to report their height, and/or weight, and/or failed to complete the Berlin questionnaire in its entirety thus excluding them from the study. A total of 11, or 14% of subjects scored high on the Berlin, meaning a high risk of suffering from OSA. Of all ceph measurements, the only one that showed a statistically significant association with the high Berlin score was MP-Hyoid (p=0.0033). BMI alone was not found to be associated with the Berlin score (p=0.3712). Presence of a posterior crossbite also did not show any correlation with the Berlin score (p= 0.1000). Conclusions: 1) BMI was not found to be associated with the Berlin score among the orthodontic subject population. 2) MP-hyoid was found to be associated with the Berlin score, at a high level of statistical significance. 3) All other cephalometric measurements, including SNA, SNB, ANB, Co-A, Co-Gn, A-Na perp, Pg-Na perp, SN-MP, FH-MP, Ba-SN, and Wits, failed to show any statistically significant correlation to the Berlin score. 4) Posterior crossbite was not found to be associated with the Berlin Score among the orthodontic subject population. Kan selentillskott behandla autoimmun tyreoidit? : En litteraturstudie / Could selenium supplementation treat autoimmune thyroiditis? : A litterature study

Lidén, Pauline January 2018 (has links)
Introduktion. / Introduction. Autoimmune thyroiditis (AITD) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system's antibodies (ab) attack the thyroid proteins thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and/or thyroglobulin (TG). Studies show that selenium supplementation in patients with AITD can reduce thyroid antibodies and the size and number of nodules in an enlarged thyroid. The purpose of this study was to investigate how selenium supplementation affects the serum levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOab) and thyroid hormone levels in autoimmune thyroiditis. Method. This is a literature study and therefore the method has been to gather relevant literature through searches on PubMed such as "selenium autoimmune thyroiditis", "selenium thyroid" and "autoimmune thyroiditis". Among the search results, nine articles were selected based on quality, publication year and relevance. Among the articles, measured levels of TPOab and thyroid hormone levels were examined and compiled, and were chosen as an indication of the effect of selenium supplementation. Results. The results were inconsistent. The majority of the studies (7 of 9) suggest that oral administration of selenium supplements effectively reduced serum concentrations of TPOab in patients with AITD in all age groups. The studies that resulted in the largest decrease in TPOab lasted for 3-12 months. Out of the 9 examined studies, only one study did not report any positive clinical effect in patients. Two of the studies showed that the selenium prevents further impairment of thyroid echogenicity, suggesting that selenium can inhibit the inflammatory process but not reverse the pre-existing thyroid damage it’s caused. The majority of studies (7 out of 9) show that selenium supplementation does not produce significant changes in the thyroid hormones: TSH, fT4 and fT3. Discussion. Why AITD-patients respond differently to selenium administration is still unknown, but it may be due to the duration of selenium treatment, the patients' intrathyroid levels of selenium at the onset of the study, the presence of iodine deficiency, as well as the age and disease progression of the patients. Conclusion. Having adequate physiological levels of selenium is of great importance in preserving thyroid health and preventing thyroid-related diseases. The majority of the studies show that selenium supplementation can reduce the number of TPOab. Selenium supplementation may also have immune related benefits but does not appear to affect the thyroid hormone levels. No adverse effects were observed during selenium supplementation, which makes its administration safe. However, more studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of selenium supplementation for AITD.

Simulation de l'effet du confinement sur l'endommagement d'un assemblage en alliage d'aluminium / Simulation of the effect of confinement on the damage inside an aluminum alloy lap joint

Le, Thi My Linh 22 November 2013 (has links)
For aircraft structures, corrosion sensitive areas are mainly those where the protection of the structure may suffer local breakdowns, as encountered inside lap joints. The assemblies of metal plates by overlapping (riveting) may present some defects in contact and consequently a gap can exist between the two parts of the assembly. Typically this gap is isolated from the outside environment by a sealant. But there is a risk of trapping of moisture more or less concentrated in aggressive ions which can induce corrosion or increase the damages initiated on coating defects. The first objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology to reproduce in a controlled manner and in the most representative way regarding actual cases, the corrosion of a lap joint made of aluminum alloy 2024- T3 plates, to perform not only observations but also chemical and electrochemical measurements. The second objective is to test the application of reactive transport models (in confined media) to check if it is possible to simulate the chemical or electrochemical changes recorded during experiments and thus to predict the long-term evolution of lap-joint in humid environment.

Bertoncello, João Carlos Brancher January 2014 (has links)
AA2024 and AA7050 aluminum alloys are traditionally used in the manufacture of fuselage structures and aircrafts wings. Usually, the component union of these structures is made using rivets since weld process with melting will produce unwanted defects. The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process is an alternative way to replace the traditional rivet union of aluminum alloys in the aeronautical and aerospace industries since the material does not melt during the joint. In the present work it has been studied the electrochemical behavior and microstructural characterization of a lap joint composed of an extruded profile of AA7050-T76511 alloy and a sheet of AA2024-T3 alloy, both of them previously anodized and jointed by friction stir welding. The electrochemical behavior was evaluated by means of Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET), measurements of the corrosion potential and cyclic voltammetry in 0,1 M NaCl. Higher anodic currents were found in the weld region, moreover this region has the lowest pit and corrosion potential. Intercrystalline corrosion was found in both alloys and in the weld region, with the highest intensity in the AA2024-T3 alloy.
