A Study of the Three Poets in The Hai-Wai-Chi Society

Guo, Chiou-shien 06 September 2007 (has links)
Abstract The Hai-Wai-Chi Society, an overseas organization derived from the ¡§Chi Society¡¨ based in Shanghai, was initiated and founded by Hsu Fu-Yuan, one of the six poets of the Chi Society. Towards the end of the Hung Kung reign of the late Ming dynasty, in the wake of the defeat of the Sungchiang uprising staged by the society, Hsu continued to work for the recovery of the Ming legacy against the ruling Qing regime. At first, he left Shanghai to follow Emperor Lungwu in Fujian. After Emperor Lungwu was defeated, he proceeded to Choushan to follow King Lu and cooperated with Chang Huang-Yen. Later on, after Choushan was seized by the Qing army, Hsu accompanied King Lu under the shelter of Koxinga in Xiamen. It was at this point that the society came to its apex. When Koxinga took hold of Taiwan following his defeat at Nanjing battle, the society members began to enter the island along with the soldiers. Therefore, the literature of Hai-Wai-Chi Society is viewed as the beginning of Han Taiwanese literature. Taiwan Shih Cheng by Lien Heng refers to Hsu Fu-Yuan, Chang Huang-Yen, Lu Jo-Teng, Sheng Chuan-Chi, Chao Tsung-Lung, Chen Shih-Ching as ¡§The Six Poets of Hai-Wai-Chi Society.¡¨ This paper, entitled A Study of Three Poets in the Hai-Wai-Chi Society, is intended to follow the same way of thinking in its exploration of Hsu Fu-Yuan, Chang Huang-Yen, and Lu Jo-Teng through the existing anthology of the society. Meanwhile, the relevant literature concerning the other three poets will be reviewed for necessary references. The Hai-Wai-Chi Society is characterized by its composition of core members, mainly loyalists to King Lu, who followed Koxinga to Taiwan as a consequence of the fall of Choushan. Mourning over the end of the Ming empire, intellectuals of high morality and talent assembled to form a society of poetry to express their emotions toward the fatherland. The members of the Hai-Wai-Chi Society were actively involved in the fight against the Qing court. In spite of successive defeats, they would live and die in exile overseas rather than surrender as subjects of the Qing regime. The Introduction aims to explain the motivation of this study, the meaning and formation of The Hai-Wai-Chi Society, with a literature review of the three poets. The first chapter explores the public opinions of The Dong-Lin Party¡]ªFªLÄÒ¡^ and the Restoration Society¡]´_ªÀ¡^ in the Late Ming period, and the poetry of patriotism by Chen Tzu-Lung and Hsia Wang-Chun of The Hai-Wai-Chi Society, to be defined in this study as two typical kinds of heritage of The Hai-Wai-Chi Society. The second chapter gives an analysis of the historical background of South Ming royalists fighting against the Qing regime and the formation and development of The Hai-Wai-Chi Society. The third chapter is focused on the Tiao-Huang-Tang Manuscript by Hsu Fu-Yuan to study his overseas poems that express his uncompromising anti-Qing mentality and noble patriotic integrity. The fourth chapter represents the social reality of war-ridden Kinmen during the Koxinga period based on Niao-Yi Poetry and Liu-An Anthology by Lu Jo-Teng. The fifth chapter deals with Chi-Ling Grass, Ping-Tsa Collection, and Tsai-Wei Recitation by Chang Huang-Yen to distinguish him as a great noble Ming loyalist who had fought against the Qing power for 19 years overseas. The Conclusion sums up the poetry by the three poets as: (1) a reflection of history with a national concern, (2) an expression of opposition against invasion with a firm anti-Qing determination, and (3) a kind of oceanic literature with a universal sympathy.

On Writing of Taiwanese Literature: Corporeal Perspective between Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze

Hsieh, Yi-Lin 07 September 2011 (has links)
Taiwan had been colonized by different regimes and thus experienced several waves of immigration in history. Traditionally, there are two forms of writings in Taiwanese language (not Chinese language) --The Chinese character and the Romanized Taiwanese in different historical perspectives -- as a result , it can be problematic especially in its written form. The establishment of the newspaper Tâi-oân-hú-siâⁿ Kàu-hōe-pò which was founded in 1885 had gradually increased the works of Taiwanese literature. This research analyzes the writing problems of Taiwanese literature in the aspects of Epistemology and Aesthetics. It had different totalitarian rules in modern Taiwan have caused two big controversies in the ways of writing systems in Taiwanese literature. Along the controversies on Taiwanese language and its writings that I quoted, the thinking of the movement of ¡§consistency between speech and writing¡¨was originated from the modern Japanese literature, especially the viewpoint¡§inner man¡¨and¡§scene. On the other hand, language issues in European philosophy already has a very long tradition of reflection, which, at first appearance, considers of philosophy that language as merely a tool to represent thinking. After the linguistic turn and the rise of literature, European philosophy of thinking about language problems, has transformed the thinking about language problems from the appearance from the classical theory into the viewpoint that regards language as the material and the machine to my research. This research embarks from the idea of¡§consistency between speech and writing¡¨in the ¡§scene¡¨ regarding the epistemological mechanism, and the philosophy developed by Maurice Merleau-Ponty as to body language, body language as an expression of ideas, reflecting on the perception and cognition mechanism of Taiwan philology system, whit which is formd during this ¡§abstract movement¡¨ . And is how the ¡§abstract movement¡¨ becomes as abstract machine? This research employed Gill Deleuze¡¦s concept of ¡§body without organs¡¨ and ¡§machine¡¨ to analyze the writing problems of Taiwanese literature. From the viewpoints of Deleuze and Guattari, the issue about written forms of Taiwanese literature can be considered as a progress from epistemological mechanism into the ¡§machine¡¨, and thus forms a virtual power of aesthetics.

Learning and Self-adaptation of the Children of Newly Immigrant Feminines at Schools in Peng-hu

Chen, Ching-hua 12 July 2005 (has links)
Many scholars who study in social mobility have observed that the social status of the father does influence their children on how they will gain their social status in the future; however, it is the education those children receive that strongly influences their status in society. As the government proceeds with the policy of "Go South" and grants people the permission of visiting their relatives that dwell in Mainland China, an unrest wave of cross-border marriage was thus brought up. At the moment, it has been the time that the second generation of these cross- border marriages enters school and begins their compulsory education. According to several scholars' observation, these people who are cross- borderly engaged receive lower social status; therefore, the issue that whether their children would confront difficulties when they receive education has obviously become a fervent topic of public affairs. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the children of the newly immigrant brides who have been in the elementary schools of Peng-hu County in the school year of 2003. In this research, the family background of the students is independent variable while the students¡¦ self-adaptation in elementary school is a dependent variable. How these variables influence one another are discussed in this study in order to figure out whether these children of newly immigrant brides confront any specific difficulties if they are facing problems in their learning at schools. Questionnaires were distributed for the empinical data, and the results were examined through descriptives, t-test,ANOVA and chi-square test, and after which, further inference and calculations were made. The findings of the study show as follow: 1. The school performance, learning attitude and the self-adaptation of the children of newly immigrant brides in Peng-hu County does not fall behind those of native children. This result differs to the general perceptions that the adaptation of these children from newly immigrant brides can not catch up with other native children. 2. The families of these newly immigrant brides in Peng-hu tend to be with low social and economical status. 3. The children whose mother come from Mainland China embrace better performance in language learning than native children, especially in learning ¡§Chinese spelling alphabets¡¨ and ¡§oral speaking competence.¡¨ However, no significant differences were found among these children in learning mathematics . 4. A mother¡¦s Mandarin ability influences her children¡¦s academic performance. 5. The writing ability of children of newly immigrant brides in Peng-hu County depends on the proportion between teacher and student at school. Suggestion: It is the first time we face the issue that the second generation of these cross- border marriages begin their education in school in Taiwan. If the survey could be directed and made by the Ministry of Education, different results come from differednt region study and different approaches could possibly be avoided, and the wrong decision making could also be prevented.
