Multivariate study of vehicle exhaust particles using machine learning and statistical techniques

Suleiman, Aminu January 2016 (has links)
This research has examined the application of machine learning and statistical methods for developing roadside particle (number/mass concentrations) prediction models that can be used for air quality management. Data collected from continuous monitoring stations including pollutants, traffic and meteorological variables were used for training the models. A hybrid feature selection method involving Genetic Algorithms and Random Forests was successfully used in selecting the most relevant predictor variables for the models from the variables selected based on their correlation with the PM\(_+\), PM\(_{2.5}\) and PNC concentrations. The study found that the hybrid feature selection can be used with both statistical and machine learning methods to produce less expensive and more efficient air quality prediction models. Among the machine learning models studied the Boosted Regression Trees (BRT), Random Forests (RF), Extreme Learning Machines (ELM) and Deep Learning Algorithms were found to be the most suitable for the predictions of roadside PM\(_+\), PM\(_{2.5}\), and PNC concentrations. The machine learning models performed better than the ADMS-road model in spatiotemporal predictions involving monitoring sites locations. Moreover, they performed much better in predicting the concentrations in street Canyons. The ANN and BRT were found to be suitable for air quality management applications involving traffic management scenarios.

Investigation into the mechanical performance of pipe grade HDPE with included silicon chips as a basis for future sensors

Kolonko, Anna Magdalena January 2012 (has links)
A possible way to continuously monitor the whole water distribution system is to equip pipes with many microsensors. If these sensors are to be integrated within the pipe walls, it is important to assess their impact on the structural integrity of the pipes. In order to test a large number of samples, small polyethylene samples were produced using compression moulding and tested in different stress modes such as tension, bending, Charpy impact and flexural creep, with respect to different chip sizes (4 and 16mm\(^²\)), shapes (circle and square), numbers (one and two), orientations and position as well as sample dimensions and chip-polyethylene interface. It was discovered that the square chip contributes to the highest increase in the polymer stiffness, but significantly reduces its ductility. The 4mm\(^²\) circle causes the smallest disruption in the polymer integrity, especially when including multiple chips and when there is no adhesion. It significantly improves the impact resistance, while its effect in the short and long term bending stress modes is insignificant. The 16mm\(^²\) circle perpendicular to the load direction failed in bending at large strains. The optimal chip orientation for improving the impact strength and reducing the embrittlement effect in tension is parallel to the applied load.

Processes of Pakeha change in response to the Treaty of Waitangi

Huygens, Ingrid Louise Maria January 2007 (has links)
The sense of crisis that marks our times may be seen as a crisis for dominant groups whose once-secure hegemony is being challenged by marginalised others. It is in theorising the reply from the dominant group to the voices of the oppressed that existing Western conceptions of social change fall silent. The dominant Pakeha group in Aotearoa New Zealand has used discourses of benign colonisation and harmonious race relations to resist 165 years of communication from indigenous Māori about their oppression and a dishonoured treaty for settlement. My research documents the appearance of the Treaty of Waitangi into the Pakeha consciousness, and the now 30 year-long response by a Pakeha antiracism movement to educate their own cultural group about its agreements. Targeting government, community and social services organisations, activist educators used Freire's (1975) approach of conscientising dialogue to present a more critical view of colonisation, and to encourage participants to consider the complicity of their organisations in ongoing structural and cultural racism. Based on my membership of local and national networks of activist educators, I was able to organise and facilitate data gathering from three sources to investigate processes of Pakeha change in: (i) unpublished material describing the antiracism and Treaty movement's historical theorising and strategies over 30 years, (ii) a country-wide process of co-theorising among contemporary Treaty educator groups about their work and perceived influence, and (iii) a collection of organisational accounts of Treaty-focused change. The collected records confirmed that a coherent anti-colonial discourse, which I have termed 'Pakeha honouring the Treaty', was in use to construct institutional and constitutional changes in non-government organisations. My interpretation of key elements in a local theory of transforming action included emotional responses to counter-cultural information, collective work for cultural and institutional change and practising a mutually agreed relationship with Māori. I concluded that these emotional, collective and relationship processes in dominant group change were crucial in helping to construct the new conceptual resources of 'affirming Māori authority' and 'striving towards a right relationship with Māori'. These counter-colonial constructions allowed Pakeha a non-resistant and facilitative response to Māori challenge, and enabled a dialogue with Māori about decolonisation. By examining in one research programme the genealogy and interdependencies of a new discourse, my research contributes to theorising about the production of new, counter-hegemonic discourses, and confirms the crucial part played by social movements in developing new, liberatory constructions of the social order. My research calls for further theory-building on (i) emotional and spiritual aspects of transformational learning, (ii) processes involved in consciously-undertaken cultural change by dominant/coloniser groups, and (iii) practising of mutually agreed relationships with indigenous peoples by dominant/coloniser groups. My research has implications for theorising how coloniser and dominant groups generally may participate in liberatory social change and decolonisation work, and the part played by the Western states in the global struggles by indigenous people for recognition of their world-views and aspirations. It remains to be seen whether counter-colonial discourses and organisational changes aimed at 'honouring the Treaty' with indigenous peoples will be sufficiently widely adopted to help transform Western dominating cultures and colonial projects. In the meantime, acknowledging and documenting these counter-colonial discourses and their constructions opens up increasing possibilities for constructing, from a history of colonisation, a different future.

From Darkness to dawn? A Forum for Kāpō Māori

Te Momo, Ivan Prentus January 2007 (has links)
This thesis researches Kāpō Māori (Māori who are blind or sight impaired) and their pursuit of Te Reo Māori. Te Reo Māori is a very significant cultural marker for Kāpō Māori to identify themselves as Māori. Kāpō Māori face many challenges, challenges that are unknown to the mainstream. The thesis surveys the fortunes of Te Reo Māori as it struggles to survive and find acceptance in Aotearoa/New Zealand, outlines attitudes towards disabled persons, who suffer discrimination and marginalisation, and summarises the story of the Blind in Aotearoa/New Zealand, especially through the history of The Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind, to provide context for the challenges faced by Kāpō Māori. For Kāpō Māori, discrimination and marginalisation is increased because all Māori suffer the disabilities that are a result of colonisation. The thesis sets out a methodology for field research, and draws from interviews with research participants to present the experiences of Kāpō Māori. This thesis provides an insight into the issues Kāpō Māori encounter when trying to engage Kāpō Māori , and draws those issues forward from darkness, where they are unknown, into the world of light by providing Kāpō Māori with a forum for discussion of these issues.

Le tympan de Vzelay : les peuples de la terre dans la pense et l'art roman : traditions iconographiques et littraires

Le Gallic, Ma 16 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Hervet, va 14 October 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Interdomain traffic engineering with MPLS

Pelsser, Cristel 10 November 2006 (has links)
During the last years, MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) has been deployed by most large Service Providers (SP). The main driver for MPLS deployment is the ability to provide new services with stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs) such as layer-2 and layer-3 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) as well as Voice and Video over IP. Most of these services are already deployed inside single SP networks. However, customers now require world-wide VPN and VoIP services. Therefore, SPs need to collaborate to offer these services across multiple SP networks. Inside a single SP network, each node usually knows the complete topology of the network with the load and delay of all the links. Based on this information, each router is able to compute constrained paths toward any other router inside the SP network. Then, it can establish a connection and reserve resources along the computed path with the Resource reSerVation Protocol (RSVP-TE). However, when services with stringent requirements must cross multiple SP networks the computation of the path becomes a problem. Routers in different SP networks exchange routing information by using the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). BGP provides reachability information. It does not distribute complete topology, delay and bandwidth information. One way to provide guaranteed services crossing different SPs is to delegate the computation of the paths to a Path Computation Element (PCE) that learns the topology of the different SPs. However, this requires that SPs reveal information that they usually consider confidential, their topology. In this thesis, we perform active measurements to show the difficulty to engineer the interdomain traffic with BGP. MPLS together with RSVP-TE provide much more control on the traffic. We define extensions to RSVP-TE for the protection of inter-AS MPLS paths. The aim is to be able to provide the same service guarantees as inside a domain while keeping the internal topology of SPs confidential, as required by SPs. We propose and evaluate distributed techniques relying on PCEs for the computation of interdomain constrained paths respecting the latter confidentiality requirement.
