This article reports the experience of the use of the technique of focus group to collect data for research in Dentistry. This technique is intended to adapt the terminology of a questionnaire in preparation on reimplante dental. For this, two groups were conducted for discussion, addressing the theme: dental trauma, with emphasis on avulsion and reimplante dental. After the development of the discussions, it was possible to observe that most school know the real meaning of the word dental trauma, linking this term to cárie in the tooth, bad breath, pain in the tooth, sucking the finger, go to the dentist. The exceptions were the students who suffered or presenciaram this type of accident, it has been for other technical terms analyzed. In possession of the descriptions made by the school were unable to prepare and / or modify the terms of any of the items of the questionnaire, adapting to the reality of the target population to search.

January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: Elaborating a treatment plan could be a difficult task, especially if dealing with crown or crown-root fractures. It is necessary a consistent knowledge, permanently updated, that, connected to the clinic experience, could result in adequate plans that make a better prognostics. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the plans of a proposed treatment and the treatment actually performed in the cases of crown and crown-root fractures during the period between 1992 to 2006. The fractures were divided according to the type of dental traumatism (Andreasen, 1974). Data was obtained based on the clinic files of the Integrated Clinic Discipline. Out of 1552 files registered at the Triage Department from Dentistry School in Araçatuba-SP State - UNESP, 549 were related to some type of crown and crown-root fractures and 1014 teeth were involved. The findings were divided between the proposed plan and the procedures actually performed. For the fractures involving enamel, dentin and pulp 127 endodontics treatments were proposed, while 54 were actually performed. As for the involvement of enamel, dentin, cement and pulp fractures, alterations are related to the 68 prothetic procedures proposed x 25 actually performed, 39 procedures of exodontics x 60 performed, 145 canal treatments procedures x 110 performed. There was a change between the proposed plans and the performed treatment. The fractures involving cement with or without pulp exposure, showed more variations. / Doutor

The aim of the present study was to evaluate approaches, the use of an intracanal medication protocol combining calcium hydroxide, chlorhexidine 2% gel and zinc oxide (2:1:2), with no periodical replacements, for the treatment of traumatized teeth. Fifty five single root, non vital teeth were studied. Fifteen had uncompleted apices (Group I), and other forty had complete apices (Group II). All teeth were selected from 33 patients, of both genders, which had been followed by The Center of Dental Traumatisms, of Piracicaba Dental College ? University of Campinas, Endodontics. The mean time of medication permanence was 9.1 and 8.2 months for Group I and II, respectively. Clinical evaluation considered symptoms and signs which were present before and after medication time, such as: dental mobility, fistula, abscess, spontaneous pain and percussion sensibility. Radiological evaluation was performed to verify the presence of cortical alveolar bone, inflammatory and/or replacement resorptions, apical radioluscency areas, and formation and type of periapical barrier. Group I teeth were submitted to aditional evaluations in order to compare its apexification with the apicegenesis process of healthy contralateral or adjacent teeth (Control Group). This was done by means of the development of the Apical Convergence Index (ICap). After statistical approaches, it was showed in the results that: (1) percussion sensibility and dental mobility occurrence showed statistically significant reductions for Group I and II, and concerning radiographic aspects, it was noted that both groups showed statistically significant modifications as the increase of the presence of cortical alveolar bone and the reduction of the periodontal ligament thickness; (2) the apexification process induced by the proposed intracanal medication protocol was not statistically different if compared to the apicegenesis process of healthy contralateral or adjacent teeth, and (3) there was a statistically significant reduction of periapical radiolucency of teeth with uncompleted apices. These findings concluded that the present intracanal medication protocol as an alternative for the treatment of traumatized non vital teeth, mainly those

Efeito do íon ferro na prevenção da erosão dentária: estudos in vitro e in situ / Effect of iron on the prevention of tooth wear: in vitro and in situ studiesFlávia de Moraes Italiani 28 May 2010 (has links)
The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of iron (Fe+2) associated or not to fluoride (F-) on the reduction of bovine enamel and dentin erosion, as well as to develop and evaluate a dentifrice containing Fe+2 to prevent erosion associated to abrasion. Four subprojects were done: (1) In vitro determination of the protective effect of increasing Fe+2 concentrations (0 to 120 mmol/L) associated or not to F- (0 to 4 g/mL) against the dissolution of powdered enamel; (2) In vitro evaluation of the protective effect of 10 mol/L Fe+2 against the mineral dissolution of superficial bovine enamel; (3) Development and in vitro evaluation of fluorided dentifrices containing different Fe+2 concentrations in order to prevent the mineral loss of bovine enamel; and (4) In situ evaluation of the effect of a dentifrice containing Fe+2 and F- on the demineralization of sound or previously eroded bovine enamel and dentin. The response variables were quantification of phosphate loss (colorimetry) and tooth wear (perfilometry, m) for the subprojects 1 and 2, and 3 and 4, respectively. Data were submitted to statistical analyses (p <0.05). In subproject (1), two-way ANOVA and Bonferronis test revealed that solutions containing 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 30.0 mmol/L Fe+2 significantly reduced the dissolution of powdered enamel at 18, 18, 23, 35, 35 and 55%, respectively, in comparison to control (without Fe+2). In the presence of F-, the effect of Fe+2 on the dissolution of enamel was reduced and no synergistic effect between these ions was observed in the tested conditions. In Subproject (2), two-way ANOVA and Bonferronis test showed a significant reduction on surface demineralization of bovine enamel (around 30-40%), when the solution containing Fe+2 at 10 mmol/L was used. In Subproject (3), ANOVA revealed a significant difference among the groups (Placebo, 1,100 g/mL F, Crest®, 1.0 mg/g Fe+2, 2.5 mg/g Fe+2, 5.0 mg/g Fe+2, F- (1, 100 g/mL) + 1,0 mg/g Fe+2, F- (1100 g/mL) + 2,5 mg/g Fe+2 and F- (1,100 g/mL) + 5,0 mg/g Fe+2) (F=4,734, p<0,0001). The lowest wear (0.48±0.24 m) was observed when the dentifrice containing F + Fe was used. In Subproject (4), for sound enamel, two-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference among the dentifrices, (F=21.72, p<0.0001), but not among the conditions (erosion only, erosion + slurry, erosion + abrasion) (F=1.20, p=0.32) or for the interaction of both (F = 1.04, p=0.41). The Bonferronis test revealed that the blocks which received the dentifrice containing Fe+2 and F- presented significantly lesser wear when compared to the blocks submitted to the other dentifrices, which did not differ significantly among each other. As for sound dentin as well as for previously eroded enamel and dentin, the same pattern was obtained but the latter two presented wear values higher than those seen for the sound blocks.

The effect of preterm birth on the development of the dentitionHarila, V. (Virpi) 25 September 2004 (has links)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of preterm birth on the development of the dentition. The spesific aims were to examine the effect on deciduous and permanent tooth crown dimensions, the eruption of permanent teeth and the sagittal occlusal relationships within the dentition.
The subjects consisted of 328 prematurely born (< 37 gestational weeks ) white and black children and 1804 control children, who participated in the cross-sectional study of the Collaborative Perinatal Project (USA) in the 1960's and 1970's.
Dental examinations, including dental casts were performed at the age of 6–12 years. Tooth crown size measurements, recording of the sagittal occlusal relationships and tooth eruption stages were performed by examining the dental casts.
In general larger permanent tooth crown dimensions were found in preterm white boys and black girls and smaller permanent tooth crown dimensions in preterm white girls and black boys. There were both increased and decreased deciduous tooth crown dimensions in preterm children compared to controls, but no significant differences were found. Boys had larger tooth crown sizes than girls within all preterm and control groups showing sexual dimorphism. The results showed earlier eruption of permanent incisors and first molars in all preterm children compared to controls and also according to sex and race. Concerning the sagittal occlusal relationships, the results showed greater prevalence of prenormal canine relationships in preterm group than in the controls. When the molar relationships were concerned, the prevalence of mesial molar occlusion was greater in the preterm group. The incidence of bilateral symmetrical canine relationship was the same in both preterm and control groups, but inside the preterm group the girls had better symmetry than the boys.
The findings of this research suggest that short gestation is not associated with reduced permanent and deciduous tooth crown dimensions in prematurely born children and also confirm the presence of the sexual dimorphism in tooth crown size. The studies also indicate that the clinical tooth eruption is accelerated in all observable permanent teeth in prematurely born children. The findings of occlusal morphology indicated that premature birth may effect the sagittal occlusal development. General health condition, neonatal and postnatal factors like intubation, postnatal molding of head shape and the importance of catch-up growth and early functional activity should be considered as possible influencing factors. Preterm birth may also interfere with the development of symmetry and lateralization.

Clinical evaluation of shade improvement after in-office vital bleachingSalem, Yousef January 2010 (has links)
Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent) / Tooth discoloration has increased the demand by patients to pursue aesthetic treatment options. Bleaching is considered a conservative approach in performing an aesthetic treatment for discolored teeth; however colour rebound and post-operative sensitivity are among the adverse effects associated with vital bleaching. In-office bleaching systems employ the use of high hydrogen peroxide concentrations. The effects of in-office bleaching agents on the degree of colour change and the gender differences in relation to bleaching outcomes are questionable. Post-operative sensitivity can be considered a bleaching side effect and the number of patients that experience it is unknown.Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of an in-office vital bleaching technique. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the degree of colour change after vital tooth bleaching using a 35% hydrogen peroxide gel (Yotuel® Special, Biocosmetics Laboratories, Spain), using a spectrophotometer (CM-2600d Konica, Minolta) to measure the colour change at each intervention during the bleaching process, to assess the post-operative sensitivity during the first week of the intervention, to evaluate the patients' perception of the colour change and to compare it to the colour change (ΔE) expressed in numeric values and to investigate whether gender differences exist in relation to the outcome of the bleaching procedure. Materials and Methods: The maxillary anterior teeth of 22 patients comprising of 11 males and 11 females were bleached with a 35% hydrogen peroxide gel (Yotuel® Special, Biocosmetics Laboratories, Spain). Pre-treatment readings of the two maxillary central incisors using a spectrophotometer (CM-2600d Konica, Minolta) were obtained. Subsequent readings were obtained after scaling and polishing, before bleaching (which was used as a baseline reading), immediately after bleaching, one week and one month post-operatively. Patients were requested to complete a form regarding post-operative tooth sensitivity and their colour perception toward the bleaching treatment. Results: The quantitative effect of the bleaching material on tooth colour showed an increase in L* values and a decrease in a* and b* values, the changes were significant (p values ≤ 0.05) except for the mean value of b* one month after bleaching which was only significant between five and ten percent. The mean values of colour change measured as ΔE between baseline and after bleaching was found to be 3.4 which did not exceed the visible colour change perceptible clinically at a difference of 3.7 units according to the literature. However nine patients exceeded the visible clinical colour change immediately after bleaching. There was no gender difference in the ΔE values in the entire bleaching process. Tooth sensitivity is considered a bleaching side effect and in this study sensitivity was traced until the fifth day after bleaching. The mean value of patients' tooth sensitivity was found to be 1.73 in the first day on a 4 point visual analog scale. The mean value of patients' colour perception was found to be 2.14 immediately after bleaching on a 3 point visual analog scale. Spearman correlation tests showed a positive relationship between ΔE values immediately and one week after bleaching and a weak relationship one week and one month after bleaching. There was significant consistency in the patients‟ colour perception data immediately and one week after the bleaching process and a weak relationship between ΔE values and patients' colour perception one month after bleaching. Conclusion: Yotuel® Special, Biocosmetics Laboratories, (Spain) an in-office bleaching material consisting of 35% hydrogen peroxide was able to bleach patients' teeth with a perceptible colour change however the chalky white teeth desired were not obtained for all the patients. Tooth sensitivity was a temporary side effect.

An investigation of the origins of cattle and aurochs deposited in the Early Bronze Age barrows at Gayhurst and IrthlingboroughTowers, Jacqueline R., Montgomery, Janet, Evans, J., Jay, Mandy, Parker Pearson, M. 2009 October 1916 (has links)
Yes / The Early Bronze Age round barrows at Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire and Gayhurst, Buckinghamshire contained remarkably large quantities of cattle (Bos taurus) remains. At Irthlingborough, at least 185 skulls with smaller numbers of mandibles, shoulder blades and pelves were found together with a small number of skeletal elements from aurochs (Bos primigenius). In contrast, the remains from Gayhurst are dominated by the limb bones from more than 300 animals. This study employed strontium isotope ratio analysis of cattle tooth enamel from 15 cattle and one aurochs to investigate the diversity of the animals’ origins at both sites and provide insights into Early Bronze Age funerary practices. Although strontium results show that most of the cattle and the aurochs included in this study were consistent with local origins, one animal from each barrow was born remotely, most likely in western Britain. In addition, a second Gayhurst animal was consistent with origins in a region of chalk rather than the local Jurassic sediments.
