An investigation of two different modalities of language used in an educational setting and the behaviour of deaf learners.

Swanepoel, Brandon 06 September 2012 (has links)
Research conducted on the prevalence of behavioural adjustment in Deaf children and adolescents, in erstwhile countries, points towards an appreciably elevated percentage of emotional and behavioural problems amongst this population group when compared to hearing normative groups. Studies specify that the prevalence of behaviour and emotional problems in Deaf children and adolescents varies from 4.8% to 50.3%. From existing research conducted, it is ambiguous as to why the reported prevalence rates of maladjustment are higher amongst Deaf children and adolescents. This pioneering study is the first of its kind to research dissimilar modalities of language used as the language of learning and teaching (LoLT) in schools for Deaf learners and how this could possibly correlate to learner behaviour in the classroom. Taking into consideration the reported pervasiveness of maladjustment in Deaf children and adolescents; this study uses the Teacher Report Form (TRF) to investigate the types of behaviour problems displayed by Deaf learners in the classroom. It further investigates whether Deaf learners display certain types of behaviour problems when dissimilar modalities of language are used as the language of learning and teaching. The overall findings of this study suggest that teachers who use manually coded spoken language report an elevated prevalence of behaviour problems on the TRF compared to teachers who use South African Sign Language (SASL). Results further suggest that the group of teachers who use SASL report somatic complaints and attention problems as the most frequently encountered behaviour problems in their classrooms. In comparison the group of teachers who use manually coded spoken English (MCE) report social problems and attention problems as the most frequently encountered behaviour problems in their classrooms. Limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are discussed.

This PhD thesis aimed to investigate ADHD in Brazil and Spain from the perspective of parents and teachers. This work is divided into three studies: a) Study 1 consisted of a literature review of studies on the prevalence of ADHD in five continents, focusing on the estimates of prevalence; the sampling process; the type of study; diagnostic criteria; and the main variables explored by studies; b) Study 2 compared the perception of mothers in relation to behavior problems listed in the CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist) in two independent clinical samples composed of Brazilian and Spanish children with ADHD diagnosis. The study was exploratory-descriptive, documental, retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative nature of the medical records treated between 2010 to April 2015 at the University Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca- Murcia / Spain, and the University Hospital Bettina Ferro de Souza - Belém / Brazil; c) Study 3, compared the teacher’s perspective in relation to behaviour problems in students diagnosed with ADHD. This is a documentary investigation of exploratory-descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional, in which resorted to analysis of children and adolescents records, especially the TRF (Teacher Report Form) between the years 2013 and 2014 diagnosed with ADHD two clinical psychology units located in Brazil and Spain. The main contribution of this work was to find similar symptoms in two independent samples composed of children and adolescents ADHD diagnosis. The comparison of the two different cultures from the perspective of two informants representing different environments, in this case, mothers who evaluated the behavior in the family environment, and teachers who interpreted the symptoms in the school environment, enriched these findings.

Auditory tracking and scene analysis - perceptual timescales and neural correlates

Ravinderjit Singh (12437493) 20 April 2022 (has links)
<p>Temporal processing and temporal coherence processing are fundamental components of auditory processing and the focus of this thesis. Cortical temporal processing in particular is understudied in humans. This dissertation makes three contributions that help characterize auditory temporal processing, and its relationship to auditory perception in humans. Experiment 1 develops a novel systems identification approach utilizing modified maximum length sequences (m-seq) to robustly measure cortical temporal processing noninvasively. Using this technique, it is found that cortex's ability to track dynamic spatial auditory cues can explain the ability to utilize dynamic binaural information to do a spatial unmasking task. This result combined with behavioral data that shows FM tracking extends out to similar rates as spatial tracking demonstrates how auditory tracking broadly is constrained by the temporal properties of cortex. Experiment 2 develops a novel measure of temporal processing, called the modulation temporal response function (mod-TRF), which can separate the underlying sources contributing to modulation processing along the auditory system from short, middle, and late latency regions. The mod-TRF has a robust SNR at the individual level giving it the potential to become an ubiquitous tool to assess temporal processing and auditory activity generally across individuals. The utility of the mod-TRF is demonstrated by evaluating how attention affects different sources along the auditory pathway. Other studies utilizing the mod-TRF could explore how temporal processing in early and late areas of the auditory system changes with aging, hearing loss, musicianship, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Experiment 3 establishes a novel physiological measure of across channel temporal coherence processing to measure auditory binding ability across individuals. It  is demonstrated how this novel temporal coherence measure can explain performance on a behavioral temporal coherence detection task, speech-in-noise task, and comodulation masking release. Lastly, it is explored how social and communicative features in individuals, measured via the Autism Quotient, align with differences in auditory ability at various tasks. </p>

Škálování arteriální vstupní funkce v DCE-MRI / Scaling of arterial input function in DCE-MRI

Holeček, Tomáš Unknown Date (has links)
Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging is modern diagnostic method used mainly in oncology. In this method, contrast agent is injected to the subject and then is continuously monitored the progress of its concentration in the affected area in time. Correct determination of the arterial input function (AIF) is very important for perfusion analysis. One possibility is to model AIF by multichannel blind deconvolution but the estimated AIF is necessary to be scaled. This master´s thesis is focused on description of scaling methods and their influence on perfussion parameters in dependence on used model of AIF in different tissues.

Nevertheless, the complaints about attention behavior in this age group have been justifying new studies on interventions which may minimize the damages from such patterns, mainly in the educational arena. Despite the growth in the literature suggesting new studies about pre-schoolers and attention this still being poorly documented. This study aimed to observe the effects of a psychosomatic practice as yoga can have in behavior attention and external problems shown in the educational arena in such age group. This randomized clinical trial deals with the development, implementation and evaluation of a yoga practice protocol of 11 weeks in two public schools in São Paulo City. 24 children were randomly screened and distributed between control group and experimental group. C-TRF scale was used as the evaluation method. The outcomes have shown significant improvements in attention problems, external behavior as well as in the time spent in the activity. The essay also discusses factors which contributed to the practical methods results and the development of attention in pre-school age / É esperado que na idade pré-escolar a atenção esteja ainda em formação.

This study aimed to assess the existence and estimate the prevalence of mental disorders in children and adolescents living in an isolated rural community of the Kalunga quilombola ethnic group (descendants of African runaway enslaved individuals), located in the northeastern part of the state of Goiás, Brazil. In this cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study a sample of 204 Kalunga children and adolescents was evaluated based on the responses of their parents/guardians and teachers to the mental health problems and behavior screening instruments Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6–18 (CBCL/6–18) and Teacher’s Report Form for ages 6–18 (TRF/6–18), respectively. The prevalence of mental health problems in Kalunga children and adolescents was 31.4% using the CBCL/6–18 and 21.1% using the TRF/6–18 (p < 0.01). Differences were found between genders, i.e., girls were more affected by internalizing problems than boys. The prevalence of mental health problems found in the present research was high compared to similar studies around the world.
