The effectiveness of methods of videotape instruction with diabetic teaching in the hospital

Martin, Jimmy Darrell January 1986 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of diabetic teaching using methods of videotape instruction in the hospital. The study focused on measuring the amount of knowledge gained between diabetic patients who viewed a videotape program with and without the presence of a health educator. Data collected for each patient consisted of: age, sex, method of regulating their diabetes i.e. (insulin, oral pills and diet), degree of impairment during hospitalization, number of years each patient has known to have diabetes, prior hospitalization because of diabetes, prior diabetic education, and prior viewing of a videotape on avoiding diabetic complications. In a pre-test/post-test design, 32 patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Patients in group I received diabetic teaching using a videotape program without a health educator present, while patients in group II received diabetic teaching using a videotape program along with a health educator present. The post-test was administered on the day following the teaching. A significant increase in knowledge scores (p < .05) was demonstrated on the post-tests taken on the day after viewing the videotape program. A comparison was made between the two groups and results showed no significant difference in knowledge gain between them. It was interesting to note that the presence of the educator was apparently needed for significant knowledge gain scores (F = 7. 13, p < .05) in subjects who had reported to have had prior diabetic education compared to the group of subjects who reported that they had received no previous diabetic education. It would seem that the increased knowledge should serve as a first step to improved health. However, this study in no way demonstrated that the knowledge did lead to improved diabetic control. Perhaps the greatest success of the video program was that the patients expressed an interest in viewing the program and learning about the avoidance of diabetic complications. / M.S.

Double-Sided Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tape : "As a Non-Drill Solution in Bathroom Environments"

Lind, Martin Nilsson, Petersson, Daniel, Petersson, Erik January 2014 (has links)
The IKEA customers are looking for new solutions to mount products in their homes and IKEA has embraced the request for this type of applications in bathroom environments as it is of the largest challenges for the customer. Double sided tape has been identified as a possible solution, hence why this project was put together. The research aims to give the reader a deeper understanding regarding double sided tape and the influences of external variables such as material, substrate and surface tension to mention a few. Extensive tests have been carried out where samples from double sided tape suppliers are examined. The test that was developed and carried out in this project aimed to include some of IKEA´s most commonly used materials together with common substrates in bathroom environments. The test data was compiled and the outcome was used to give recommendations to IKEA regarding future product development when using double sided tape and also recommend suitable tape suppliers for continued cooperation.

Video analysis as a form of feedback to improve sport performance

Thomas, Brendan Nigel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScSportSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Feedback is critical for motor skill learning. Knowledge of performance (KP) In the form of verbal feedback is the most commonly used type of augmented feedback. Advances in technology have made it possible for coaches to utilise video-supported feedback with athletes with the intention of accelerating the learning process. The use of videotape replay has been an effective aid under some circumstances. Recent commercially available products offer digital analysis that may be even more successful than ordinary video replay in this regard. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of knowledge of results (KR) and verbal KP with video-support in improving the learning of the tennis serve, when compared to KR with verbal KP only. A total of 18 adults (lOwomen and 8 men) were assessed on their serving technique (6 kinematic variables), accuracy (2 variables) and speed (1 variable). Technique analysis was completed using a commercially available analysis programme. For a short intervention period, one group (n = 10) received KR with verbal feedback only, while the other group (n = 8) received KR plus verbal feedback with video support. The subjects were tested after the intervention to see what changes had occurred with regards to the speed, accuracy and technique of their serves. No significant differences were found for any of the variables, leading to the conclusion that the amount oftime spent in the intervention programme must be extended in order to possibly achieve significant effects on performances.

The Effects of Videotaping and Playback on the Communication Performance of the Introverted and Extroverted Individual

Wilson, John William 12 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining the effects of videotaping and subsequent playback on the communication performance of introverted and extroverted individuals. The principal method of determining these effects is the subjective judgment of a panel of qualified speech instructors who viewed videotaped speeches made by the subjects. All subjects were repeatedly subjected to videotaping, and half were exposed to playback. Statistically, by using one-way analysis of covariance, the effects of playback were measured: The speaking scores achieved by the experimental introverts and extroverts were compared with the speaking scores of the control introverts and extroverts. Sixty-four subjects were used; these were limited to college students enrolled in the teacher-education program. To carry out the purposes of the study, the following hypotheses were tested: 1. There will be a significant difference between the scores of introverted trainees who are videotaped and exposed to playback and the scores of introverted trainees who are videotaped but not exposed to playback. 2. There will be a significant difference in the scores of extroverted trainees who are videotaped and exposed to playback and the scores of extroverted trainees who are videotaped but not exposed to playback.

An Experimental Study of Teachers' Verbal and Nonverbal Immediacy, Student Motivation, and Cognitive Learning in Video Instruction

Witt, Paul L. 05 1900 (has links)
This study used an experimental design and a direct test of recall to provide data about teacher immediacy and student cognitive learning. Four hypotheses and a research question addressed two research problems: first, how verbal and nonverbal immediacy function together and/or separately to enhance learning; and second, how immediacy affects cognitive learning in relation to student motivation. These questions were examined in the context of video instruction to provide insight into distance learning processes and to ensure maximum control over experimental manipulations. Participants (N = 347) were drawn from university students in an undergraduate communication course. Students were randomly assigned to groups, completed a measure of state motivation, and viewed a 15-minute video lecture containing part of the usual course content delivered by a guest instructor. Participants were unaware that the video instructor was actually performing one of four scripted manipulations reflecting higher and lower combinations of specific verbal and nonverbal cues, representing the four cells of the 2x2 research design. Immediately after the lecture, students completed a recall measure, consisting of portions of the video text with blanks in the place of key words. Participants were to fill in the blanks with exact words they recalled from the videotape. Findings strengthened previous research associating teacher nonverbal immediacy with enhanced cognitive learning outcomes. However, higher verbal immediacy, in the presence of higher and lower nonverbal immediacy, was not shown to produce greater learning among participants in this experiment. No interaction effects were found between higher and lower levels of verbal and nonverbal immediacy. Recall scores were comparatively low in the presence of higher verbal and lower nonverbal immediacy, suggesting that nonverbal expectancy violations may have hindered cognitive learning. Student motivation was not found to be a significant source of error in measuring immediacy's effects, and no interaction effects were detected between levels of student motivation, teacher verbal immediacy, and teacher nonverbal immediacy.

Análise ambiental integrada da paisagem no município de Tapes (RS), Brasil, como suporte ao gerenciamento costeiro

Silva, Suélen Cristine Costa da January 2018 (has links)
The coastal zone importance is historically recognized by humanity due to it privileged natural and economic resources. These areas are susceptible to several environmental pressures. Consequently, adjust the increase of human activities without damaging the environment is a challenge for coastal management. The city of Tapes, located on the western shore of Lagoa dos Patos, on the middle coast of Rio Grande do Sul, has unusual and vulnerable ecosystems, which has been modified over the years. However, there are no data about the territorial dynamics, in an adequate spatial and temporal scale, to monitoring the evolution of the landscape and support coastal management. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the landscape of the city of Tapes, under an ecosystem approach. For this purpose, the methodology used was an analysis of physical and socioeconomic characteristics, identification of environmental conflicts, land use and cover survey for the years 1964 and 2014, analysis of environmental vulnerability and environmental systems. Furthermore, the integration of natural and anthropic elements enabled to evaluate the city environmental status. The results allowed an understanding the dynamics, structure and organization of the territory. And, represent an important contribution to the territorial planning of the region and, consequently, to the Integrated Management of Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Zone.

Magnetization of stacked high-Tc superconducting (HTS) tapes using flux pumping

Zhang, Heng January 2018 (has links)
Stacked commercial second generation (2G) high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes has been demonstrated to have great field trapping ability, with superior mechanical, thermal properties and crossed-field performance to HTS bulks. HTS stacks are considered as a very promising candidate for superconducting permanent magnets, which can be used for many applications like superconducting machines and levitation devices. However, the current magnetization methods for HTS stacks are the conventional magnetization methods developed for HTS bulks decades ago, which have various limitations. On the other hand, the recent progress on HTS flux pumping technology enables HTS coils to be successfully magnetized in an effective and efficient way. In this thesis, these two concepts were combined for the first time. Flux pumping for HTS stacks was proposed and developed as a new magnetization technique. I employed two types of flux pumps, the rotating magnet flux pump and the rectifier type flux pump, to magnetize the modified HTS stacks. The design of the flux pumps, the experimental results and the analysis of the observed behaviours are presented in the thesis. This research provides a new direction in the magnetization of HTS permanent magnets, which has the potential to make HTS permanent magnets more practical with lighter, more compact and efficient magnetization setups.
