College Freshman Biology Two Semester Course: Integrating Deep Processing Teaching Techniques

Blevins, Mary Jean 05 1900 (has links)
Development of a college level freshman biology course was undertaken in response to government reports that American students have fallen behind students of other countries in the area of the sciences. Teaching strategies were investigated to accomplish two objectives, to define essential academic material to include in the course and to investigate teaching techniques that would increase deep processing of the information. An active process that consisted of applying the cognitive information to solving problems or developing answers to questions was defined as critical thinking. Critical thinking was incorporated into the course by the use of case studies.

This study about the reading of the photojournalism in the basic school intends to supply the demand of analysis of the use of iconographic material at school. The lack of attention towards the imagetical language in the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN), the low number of studies about the didactical utilizations of the photojournalism and the absence of this theme in the Portuguese language teachers’ college also motivated this research. This action research also analyses the activities of reading and production of journalistic photographs in the original medias (printed and/or electronic) that were made with students of a public school at Assis-SP between 2005 and 2006, according to the linguistic studies of Roland Barthes and Mikhail Bakhtin. A electronic newspaper (a.k.a. blog) called Jornal Stillo was also created, for the students to practice the concepts of news presented during the research. The results of this research point to the necessity of the approach of the photojournalistic textual genre in its original support (paper or electronic), because of the students’ incipient knowledge of the newspaper textual structures.

An Innovated Teaching Technique for Occupation Investigation

Marburger, Rodney Ging 12 1900 (has links)
This study enhances student acceptance of career investigation and contains extensive lesson plans for each day of the school year, plus one copy of each handout to be duplicated. The classroom is run as a business where students work for the instructor and are paid by check at the end of each week. Money is deposited on account and used to purchase course grades. The more money the student earns, the higher grade he can purchase. The findings show that students learn more about careers. Students became aware that the higher paying career fields required more schooling and/or training, resulting in changed attitudes about school. They were able to see how the relationship of the learning process could determine their future.

Didaktické využití vybraných čeledí krytosemenných rostlin ve výuce na ZŠ a víceletých gymnáziích / Didactic Utilization of Selected Angiosperms in Teaching at Elementary and High Schools

Moldaschlová, Jana January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with a didactic use of selected angiosperms in teaching at elementary and high schools. It provides theoretical knowledge concerning angiosperms, selected families, and plant species. Furthermore, it describes selected teaching techniques and methodology which can be used in teaching of the angiosperms. This thesis contains specific suggestions of the teaching methodology dependent on the selected plant families. A part of the thesis is a questionnaire survey, which contains the use of various forms and methods of teaching in natural science lessons at elementary schools and high schools. The results of the practical work are represented by practical exercises, worksheets and didactic games which teachers could use in teaching of the angiosperms. Key words: teaching techniques and methodology, questionnaire suvey, angiosperms

The use of indigenous techniques of communication for language learning: The case of Cameroon / Der Einsatz von indigenen Kommunikationstechniken im Fremdsprachenunterricht in Kamerun

Ebong, Balbina 17 August 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This study aimed at determining whether the use of indigenous techniques of communication can have a positive impact on the motivation of the learner of English as a foreign language in Cameroon. By indigenous techniques of communication we mean techniques like role-play, songs, the telling of folktales, riddles and proverbs. This work is intended as a contribution to the search for improvement of student motivation and enthusiasm, whereby they can be more responsive as they participate spontaneously in learning English as a foreign language. Some writers agree that it is beneficial to learn a foreign language using the material that the learners are familiar with (Lado 1964, Gee 1987, Post and Rathet 1996). The telling of folktales, role-play, songs, and the use of riddles and proverbs are found in all societies and every indigenous society uses them in teaching in one way or the other. Most foreign language learners are familiar with them. Their abundance in the Cameroonian society presents an excellent opportunity for foreign language teaching/learning. My interest in this research has been substantially influenced by my experience of working for almost a decade with learners of English as a foreign language in Francophone secondary/high schools in Cameroon. This work led me to the realization that students respond to English language teaching with very little motivation and enthusiasm. They make little or no progress in learning the language, much less in communicating in it. One of the major questions I have often asked myself is why Francophone students find English language learning boring and what could be done to solve the problem of teaching English to these students. I have tried on a number of occasions to tell folktales or teach a song in class when I found the students were bored with the lessons and discovered that the students immediately became alert. Their alertness was probably not for the direct purpose of making any linguistic gain but for the sheer entertainment of listening to a story or taking part in the singing, all of which they seemed to enjoy. Based on this positive change in the students, it was hypothesized that the introduction of some indigenous techniques of communication in the foreign language classroom might help improve its learning. The results from this study indicate that the recommendations for the use of these techniques in language teaching will help improve on the present negative attitude of foreign language learners. This study is significant to foreign language teaching/learning in all developing countries but most especially to the Cameroonian educational system where the study was carried out. Its relevance is due to the fact that most of the facilities that are presently used for the teaching of foreign languages in advanced countries are absent in developing countries. To help improve on the enthusiasm of the learner of a foreign language therefore, educational planners should resort to the use of indigenous techniques, which this study has found out could be very helpful in any foreign language classroom if properly applied.
