Nature vs. culture in sustainable environmental management / by Ruth Ananka Loubser

Loubser, Ruth Ananka January 2005 (has links)
The material of this study includes literature on the historically bound nature of the ideographical nature vs. culture polarity. From this material, general concepts of "nature" and "culture" are formed on the basis of value in the context of environmental management. Then, the existence of a polar dualism (nature vs. culture) is indicated via a transcendental critique of the worldview underlying the construction of this relationship. It is shown that the polarity is asymmetrical, causing a hierarchical organization in the Western ontology. The nature/culture hierarchical polarity is subjected to a less radical deconstruction and a non-dualistic, less reductionist conception of "nature" and "culture" formulated. This enables a foresee ably sustainable environment in terms of quality of life of the human being in totality. / Thesis (M.A. (Philosophy))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Religion and technics, even with different impacts and moments in the architectonic of Jürgen Habermas‟s thought, end up constituting as referential dialogic themes in the work of this author, from which he structures his thought in a theoric growing that extends from his early essays to his most recent writings. The objective of this dissertation is, from a literature review, to analyze the approaches performed by Habermas about these dialogical poles explaining movements and theoretical frameworks developed in each step. We propose to work at first the concept of technic explaining the influence inherited from Frankfurt School, as well as their reconstructions and proposals to the impacts of an instrumented reason in society. The culmination of Habermas' analysis about the techno-scientific knowledge will be the delineation of normative ethical limits of such a knowledge and at the same time exposing the pathologies and shortcomings of a strategic reason, or merely related-to-end , which culminates with his proposal of a “mitigated naturalism”. From this theoretical horizon will work the concept of religion and its importance in today's theoretical framework of Habermas. Finally, we analyse his approach about the concept of religion and the importance of this movement in the lurch about this interpretative turn about this, culminating with his repositioning inside the thought of such author.

Literature of utopia and dystopia. Technological influences shaping the form and content of utopian visions.

Garvey, Brian T. January 1985 (has links)
We live in an age of rapid change. The advance of science and technology, throughout history, has culminated in periods of transition when social values have had to adapt to a changed environment. Such times have proved fertile ground for the expansion of the imagination. Utopian literature offers a vast archive of information concerning the relationship between scientific and technological progress and social change. Alterations in the most basic machinery of society inspired utopian authors to write of distant and future worlds which had achieved a state of harmony and plenty. The dilemmas which writers faced were particular to their era, but there also emerged certain universal themes and questions: What is the best organisation of society? What tools would be adequate to the task? What does it mean to be human? The dividing line on these issues revolves around two opposed beliefs. Some perceived the power inherent in technology to effect the greatest improvement in the human condition. Others were convinced that the organisation of the social order must come first so as to create an environment sympathetic to perceived human needs. There are, necessarily, contradictions in such a division. They can be seen plainly in More's Utopia itself. More wanted to see new science and technique developed. But he also condemned the social consequences which inevitably flowed from the process of discovery. These consequences led More to create a utopia based on social reorganisation. In the main, the utopias of Francis Bacon, Edward Bellamy and the later H. G. Wells accepted science, while the work of William Morris, Aldous Huxley and Kurt Vonnegut rejected science in preference for a different social order. More's Utopia and Bacon's New Atlantis were written at a time when feudal, agricultural society was being transformed by new discoveries and techniques. In a later age, Bellamy's Looking Backward and Morris's News From Nowhere offer contrary responses to society at the height of the Industrial evolution. These four authors serve as a prelude to the main area of the thesis which centres on the twentieth century. Wells, though his first novel appeared in 1895, produced the vast bulk of his work in the current century. Huxley acts as an appropriate balance to Wells and also exemplifies the shift from utopia to dystopia. The last section of the thesis deals with the work of Kurt Vonnegut and includes an interview with that author. The twentieth century has seen the proliferation of dystopias, portraits of the disastrous consequences of the headlong pursuit of science and technology, unallied to human values. Huxley and Vonnegut crystallised the fears of a modern generation: that we create a soulless, mechanised, urban nightmare. The contemporary fascination with science in literature is merely an extension of a process with a long tradition and underlying theme. The advance of science and technology created the physical and intellectual environment for utopian authors which determined the form and content of their visions.

The birthing experience : towards an ecosystemic approach

Carpenter, Marisa 01 January 2002 (has links)
The birth of a child is a life-changing event in a woman's life. However, women's subjective experiences of giving birth have not been extensively researched, while the literature reflects an inherent realist approach. This has resulted in a decontextualised account of this critical event in women's lives. This conceptual study discusses the body of knowledge on the birthing experience from a widened perspective that includes not only the birthing woman, but also the people she interacts with and the context in which birth is embedded. The study comments on the way birth is managed in technological society and how its inherent Newtonian epistemology impacts on a woman's experience of birth. Ecosystemic epistemology is presented as an alternative approach which provides an holistic understanding of this experience. A reconceptualisation is proposed which acknowledges the social construction of birth. Lastly, the alternative birth movement as a more holistic approach to birth is discussed

The Juridical Act as a historiography category / El Negocio Jurídico como categoría historiográfica

Irti, Natalino 12 April 2018 (has links)
This article addresses the issue of the pre-legal nature of the Juridical and its stratification in the social and legal level. Also, it contrasts the theory of the will and the theory of the declaration, and refers to the controversy between Emilio Betti and Giuseppe Stolfi about the dispute over the language. The idea of monism is developed in the theory of the Juridical Act quoting Santi Romano and Hans Kelsen, as well as its tensions with dualism. Finally, it takes Juridical Act as historiographical category, and its relationship to the problems of technological society and closes with the gap between private autonomy and Juridical Act.

Bible study materials and the video medium - a practical theological analysis of video as a Bible study communicative medium

Niven, Adam D'Arcy 27 November 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents a practical theological evaluation of Bible study materials which incorporate the video medium as part of their package. I begin by establishing a focus of practical theology which emphasises the importance of the development of an active reflective sojourning of the practical theologian. I conclude that:
Practical theology is concerned with establishing and cultivating the rhythm of action and reflection within the experience of the Christian community of faith. This is a process of listening to the Word of God and discerning to address the community of faith through proposing change, with all these tasks operating within a current context of the Christian faith and for the purpose of maintaining and perfecting the Christian community.
Following this, I present the established rhythm of action and reflection by drawing on a narrative of my experience and arrive at a perceived problem with the current development of Bible study materials that incorporate the video medium. The following thesis is proposed:
The Church has a responsibility to train and equip believers within the context of the relational community interacting with the Word of God so the community may grow in discernment and maturity. The Church has, and continues, to utilise different media to provide teaching and training on a mass scale. The current products being developed as Bible study materials (especially those incorporating the video medium) are failing to meet this responsibility.
From this position the study then presents a continuing sojourning through a theoretical and empirical investigation to explore the validity of the thesis and cultivate further my active reflection. The theoretical investigation provides three complimentary perspectives for evaluation: Cultural Value Systems; Communication Theories; and Pedagogical Approaches. The empirical exploration includes a Qualitative Document Analysis of the Bible Study Products which is supplemented by Qualitative Interviews of small group leaders from a local church setting. In conclusion, the thesis is re-evaluated against the outcomes of the study and a proposed change is presented for the purpose of maintaining and perfecting the Christian community. This draws attention to the tension between established cultures and the introduction of new technologies; the importance of a production focussed informed by a theology of small groups; the need for new media to be continually evaluated in their utilisation; and the need to recognise the dominant ‘message’ communicated by the combination of content and the medium. A closing narrative reflection of my experience is also included to illustrate the ongoing cultivation of the rhythm of action and reflection which this study has encouraged. Under this prism subjects will be contemplated as emergency of a global capitalism, neoliberalism, future of the socialism, cultural pos-modernity, information society, pos-industrial society, direct visibility, infotecnological society and cybercultural. In this context, we evaluate new practical of the communication of the companies and its relation with the sensible construction of and perceptions on the performance of the corporations in the areas of social and ambient responsibility, with the purpose to observe whether the motor force of the social actions are social responsibility or a new form to add value to the mark. The bibliographical research and the collection of data during the main professional events and conferences on the subject were the reference bases this work. During one year and half, we hear lectures, cases, we read many publications on the area and research on the social action in Brazil and on the profile of the consumer. The analysis of these documents became in a critical evaluation of the practical of the social responsibility in the age of the direct visibility. Perhaps the major contribution of this study is to evaluate in critical way the role of the enterprise communication that, with more or less intensity, collaborates for the development of the relation between capital x work x society, at the moment where the globalization transforms measured them in a easy agent of the submission of the society its economic policy. On the other hand, the communication assessorship starts to serve as strategical tool of the modern business administration, which it tries to persuade the consumer-citizen of whom it acts socially of responsible form, creating a new utopia / A presente Dissertação de Mestrado visa apresentar o cenário em que se insere a comunicação no início do século XXI e a sua vinculação às formas de poder e de cultura.
