The Role of the Learning Technology Coordinator in the Professional Development of Teachers as they Integrate Learning Technologies into Classroom Practice

O’Donnell, Margaret M., res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2002 (has links)
This research study investigated the professional development of teachers as they integrate learning technologies into classroom practice. In particular, the study was concerned with the specific role of the learning technology coordinator in this professional development process. The views of classroom teachers were sought concerning factors in their professional development which they found useful together with the relevance of the role of the learning technology coordinator. So too, the views of the learning technology coordinators and principals were sought regarding effective professional development as teachers integrate learning technologies into classroom practice. Two processes were used to ascertain these views. Focus groups and interviews were conducted at the LaTTiCE (Learning and Teaching Technologies in Catholic Education) and Navigator schools. The Navigator and LaTTiCE school were specially funded pilot schools for the integration of learning technologies into classrooms. These technology rich schools provided detailed data from a specific group of people. A survey was also sent to randomly selected primary schools in Melbourne to see if similar responses would be gained from the general population of schools less privileged in terms of learning technologies and the associated professional development. Analysis of this data led to some important insights related to the professional development of teachers as they integrate learning technologies into classroom practice and to the specific role of the learning technology coordinator in this process. This study found that the main reason why teachers integrated learning technologies into classroom practice was to benefit their students and to improve their own skill levels. The important factors in the professional development of teachers integrating technology were that it was collaborative, embedded in practice, ongoing over time, had the support of the principal and was supported by a learning technology coordinator. This study focused on the role of the learning technology coordinator and found that the most important aspect of this role was related to the professional development of teachers and the coordination of the school’s technology program. These findings led to recommendations that priority be given to funding at a system level for a school based learning technology coordinator to be appointed in each primary school and that principals provide for this coordinator to focus on the professional development of teachers integrating technology into classroom practice.

The research investigated the challenges experienced by teachers of basic education in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the classroom. The basis for the theoretical discussion was supported by authors from the fields of Philosophy, Education and Communication who have dedicated their research to the impacts of ICTs throughout society, including Castells, Lemos, Lévy, Martínez, Rada, Sacristán, Sancho and Tedesco. To answer the problem question: how do ICT contribute to mediation for new teaching and learning practices in the classroom ?, this research considered that, when thinking about education in the information society, it is necessary to reflect with teachers on aspects that Technologies, what their objectives are in relation to the training process. The objective of the research was to discuss the ICT space in the pedagogical practice of primary education teachers, who work in a public school in a city on the coast of the State of São Paulo, as well as to understand the challenges for pedagogical use of the tools in the classroom. class. In order to understand the complexity of the study, the methodological choice was based on a qualitative approach, with the data collection procedures being the focus group, observation, semi-structured interview and questionnaire. The results pointed out dilemmas and possibilities in the use of ICTs in teaching practice, which are real challenges for the effective incorporation of technological resources in the classroom. In relation to the challenges pointed out by the research participants, are: a) the need for ongoing training; B) lack of necessary infrastructure in relation to equipment and access to the Internet; C) difficulties in planning the use of equipment; D) difficulties to maintain authority before the student in the midst of the attractiveness of technological resources. Faced with the challenges cited by the teachers, possibilities arose for the use of technological resources in the classroom and for communication with parents and students, through technologies that allowed distance interactivity. The research data showed that the experiences of teachers and managers with the use of technological tools advance in teaching and learning practices, as the teacher has favorable conditions to explore more their potential for interaction and communication.

A educação a distância na formação continuada de professores : uma reflexão / The distance education in the continuous formation of educators : a reflection

Madeira, Carla de Castro Gomes January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation is a reflection about themes and related challenges of the Distance Education, mediated by virtual atmospheres of learning, in the teachers' continuous formation. Its development results of an analytical description of the empiric context starting from a theoretical reflection accomplished by different aspects. It refers, especially, to the care of the management of the human relationships, besides worrying about the understanding of the society in which we live and its connection with the educational processes, especially in the organization forms of distance methodologies, showing the new education paradigm in which we are submerged. This reflection reveals that the management in education happens according to different elements and the interpretation that students and teachers have about the process itself. Especially in the distance education, new forms of development of the teaching and learning process are being used starting from the new technologies available on the current society, producing interest in the viability and effectiveness of the tools used in the virtual environment of learning offered by the Internet. The management processes of using virtual environments are inserted in countless contexts particularly in a new perspective of the role of the virtual educational manager. This reflection doesn’t finish the correct way of promoting education with the new digital technologies, but it can cause a reflection about how to promote the best way of cooperation, communication, problems solution, creativity, autonomy, interactive learning, diversity, etc, in the effective proposal of development of the distance education.

In a context where there is a decline in students' interest in mathematics, a discipline perceived as challenging and abstract, it is recognized the pressing need for teachers to provide innovative tools and adopt pedagogical approaches that revitalise students' interest in this subject. A deep understanding of mathematical concepts emerges as a crucial component for meaningful learning and requires a diversity of approaches and educational strategies that can be applied to strengthen students' education, promoting the integrated development of mathematical and technological competencies. Through active methodologies such as flipped classroom, cooperative learning, game-based learning, or gamification, which have great didactic potential, students can achieve effective learning, implying that they can understand mathematical concepts effectively and efficiently while enhancing the potential of the class group. The experiences gathered in this research, including the implementation of the flip methodology, the use of enriched educational videos, gamification, manipulative materials, technological tools, and the promotion of computational thinking, among others, span both pre-university education, including secondary and high school, and university education. The research methodology is based on an exploratory, pre-experimental, and quasi-experimental cross-sectional approach. In all cases, theoretical foundations supporting the experiences are incorporated, along with quantitative and qualitative analysis of the collected data. The results obtained in these studies reflect a noticeable increase in learning achievements and student motivation because of the implementation of these methodologies. In summary, this doctoral thesis stands as a compendium of research highlighting the importance of active methodologies in the teaching of mathematics at the secondary and university levels. The findings support the effectiveness of these methodologies in reigniting students' interest in mathematics and promoting deeper and more motivating learning in these areas. With this, it lays the groundwork for continuous improvement in the teaching of mathematics at all educational levels. / Jiménez Hernández, C. (2024).
