Life experiences of multiparous teenage mothers in selected communities in the Eastern CapeBekwa, Bonisile Goodness 10 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the life experiences of multiparous teenage
mothers at selected communities in the Eastern Cape Province. The population for
this study was pregnant teenage mothers aged 12-18 years having at least one
previous pregnancy, living in the catchment areas of the provincial hospital of Bizana
in the Alfred Nzo District of the Eastern Cape Province.
Data were collected through 12 semi-structured individual interviews using a selfdeveloped
interview schedule. The transcribed interviews were analysed by means of
thematic analysis, using the five stages according to Terre Blanche, et al. (2006),
namely familiarisation, inducing themes, coding, elaboration, and checking. Subcategories
were grouped into 12 categories and five main themes. Findings on the life
experiences of the multiparous teenage mothers are described according to the main
themes, namely the everyday life of the teenage mothers, cultural practices leading to
pregnancies, factors contributing to pregnancies, challenges experienced by teenage
mothers, and messages from the teenage mothers. Recommendations focus on the role of social services to engage the multidisciplinary team and the community to assist
in the empowerment of young mothers to break the cycle of multiparous teenage
pregnancies and the negative impact thereof on the lives of young mothers. / Health Studies / M. P. H.

PhD (Sociology) / Department of Sociology / The purpose of this study was to critically determine the impact of communal child-rearing
approach on the prevalence of teenage pregnancy in Vhembe District, in order to develop
facilitation tools from which the parents can be empowered on the constructive parenting
approaches, specifically for a girl-child and teenage girls against the prevalence of teenage
pregnancy. This study further empowers the teenage girls in particular growing-up in Vhembe
District with the chance of healthy development and future favourable womanhood. A
combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used to conduct the study, with a
quantitative description and exploratory study design. A total of 400 participants, mainly
teenage girls, participated in a quantitative approach. Then 16 pregnant teenage girls, 19
teenage mothers, 6 key informants and 23 parents of pregnant teenage girls and mothers
participated in a qualitative approach. The participants for the quantitative approach were
sampled using the stratified random sampling technique because of the age-specific (13-19
years). Close-ended questionnaires were administered to them. The participants for in-depth
interviews were sampled using the purposive and snowball non-random sampling technique.
They were high school principals, teachers, and community leaders, pregnant teenage girls and
teenage mothers, and their parents.
Data collected through close-ended questionnaires were analyzed using the Statistical Package
for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme. Frequencies tables were created to categorize variables
and cross-sectional frequencies tables were further created to show associations between the
variables. The data collected through structured interviews, matrices were created using content
thematic analysis. The responses were grouped thematically and, with the emergence of subthemes,
broad categories were generated to differentiate and explain the thoughts expressed by
the participants. The study findings suggest that the prevalence of teenage pregnancy is purely
a social behavioral problem develop through critical parenting practices and approaches. The
study concluded that the total blame for the prevalence of teenage pregnancy is in the way
parents raise the teenage girls, whether influenced by their socio-economic status, cultural
values, availability or absence of the other parent, etc. the primary lack of sensitive parenting
recognition of the prevalence of teenage pregnancy, critically placed the teenage girls in
Vhembe District in the prevalence of teenage pregnancy. / NRF

challenging and critical public health problem, and it remains one of the most
common causes of morbidity and mortality among children under the age of
5 years. There is no exception for the Vhembe District.
Purpose: The study determined the perceptions of young mothers regarding
causes of malnutrition in children under the age of 5 years in the Vhembe
District, of the Limpopo Province.
Methodology: This study used qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and
contextual design to collect data among young mothers regarding causes of
malnutrition in children under 5 years. Twelve young mothers were sampled
using probability, simple random sampling at selected hospitals population.
In-depth individual interviews were used to collect data and analysed using
Tesch’s steps. Measures to ensure trustworthiness and ethical consideration
were adhered to throughout the study.
Results: Three themes emerged from the analysed data, namely: Young
mothers’ perceived causes of malnutrition, young mother’s beliefs about
malnutrition, and health care seeking actions for a malnourished child.
Recommendations: This study recommend a strategies to integrate young
mothers into the health promotion regarding their understanding and
experiences about malnutrition. Policies on child nutrition should be reviewed
regularly in the Vhembe District for prevention and management of
malnutrition in children under 5. / NRF

from their responsibilities regarding their pregnant child, and they should take the lead in
working with the school to support and monitor their child’s health and progress. The purpose
of this study was to explore and describe the role of parents regarding teenage pregnancy
and school attendance in the rural village of Thomo in Mopani District Limpopo Province.
The study is qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual in nature. The population
comprised of the selected parents and caregivers residing at Thomo village of Mopani District.
Purposive sampling was used to select 10 parents and 5 caregivers. Sampling size was
determined by data saturation. Data was collected through in-depth individual interviews,
guided by unstructured questions, data analysis was through open coding. Trustworthiness
was ensured through credibility, dependability, conformability and transferability and ethical
issues were adhered to. One main theme with four sub - themes emerged from the raw data;
namely, parents /caregivers skills and personal factors that affect behaviour change; parents
/ caregivers intention to change the teenagers’ behaviour; environmental and cultural factors
as facilitators/ barriers to pregnancy prevention and parent-school partnerships.
Recommendations were made that included the following: awareness campaigns regarding
prevention of teenage pregnancy; establishment of the compulsory education subject; review
of existing teenage pregnancy policies; engaging parents on youth programs; using churches
to strengthen youth education on the dangers of sex before marriage; as well as capacitating
parents on effective communication with their children. / NRF

rest of the world. Social workers are involved with teenage girls by providing
guidance during their pregnancies and face many challenges by accepting this
role. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify and describe the
needs of social workers when guiding pregnant teenage girls. A conceptual
framework with the Gestalt approach as the theoretical framework for the study
was stated after which an empirical study took place. In-depth interviews took
place with nine social workers. Results were then verified in a focus group
discussion. From the empirical data themes and sub themes were identified and
verified with relevant literature. These themes and sub themes were then
interpreted through the Gestalt approach. Conclusions and recommendations
were made to social workers and interdisciplinary teams, which form part of the

The purpose of this study was to explore possible problems associated with pregnancy amongst student nurses in the Northern Province, and to determine whether their studies were adversely affected by their pregnancies. This study was designed as a quantitative, exploratory descriptive survey to look into the pregnancies of a specific group of students exploring their experiences in the classrooms and in the clinical areas. During 1998 data was collected by distributing questionnaires to ninety three pregnant . student nurses. Sixty-seven (71,0%) of student nurses fell pregnant because they lacked knowledge about contraceptives. Four-six (49,5%) of the respondents delayed seeking antenatal care, although they needed advice and support. Whilst fifty-eight (62,4%) of the respondents suffered from minor ailments such as
tiredness, pre-eclampsia, early bleeding prior to three months pregnancy, and dizziness. Fifty-eight (62,4%) of the respondents encountered problems with their academic progress, as revealed by decreasing marks scored before, during, and after delivery. Female adolescents' experiences and perceptions of teenage pregnancy in Belfast, MpumalangaMudzokora, Wilton 11 1900 (has links)
As female adolescents go through the transition phase of adolescence, they respond to a variety of factors influencing their sexual development, for instance, cultural practices, socioeconomic status, media exposure, internet access, increased autonomy to explore their sexuality, as well as quality of care, guidance and supervision by primary caregivers. If they do not get enough guidance from caregivers, teachers or medical clinics, adolescents often fall pregnant. The consequences of unexpected pregnancies prove to be negative on intrapersonal as well as interpersonal levels. There is a need to reduce such pregnancies to give adolescents a better chance in life and to enhance optimal development on individual, social, emotional and moral levels. This study explored female adolescents’ experiences and perceptions of teenage pregnancy in Belfast, Mpumalanga, in South Africa. The researcher tried to make a positive contribution towards reducing the incidence of teenage pregnancy in South Africa, especially in rural, farm and semi-urban settings, through an inductive study of African female adolescents in selected secondary schools. Data were collected through individual in-depth audio-recorded semi-structured interviews with 20 African adolescent girls who were purposefully selected for the study. The researcher used Tesch’s method of analysis to analyse the data collected and to deduce themes and categories. Adolescents mostly fell pregnant, because of changes in sexual interest, emotional experiences, social development dynamics, adolescent thinking patterns and failure to use contraceptives. Teenage pregnancy affected the life-world of adolescents by influencing negatively on their physical health, psycho-emotional wellbeing, moral behaviour, social and school lives. The researcher established that the adolescents, their families, communities and society would continue to face the adverse outcomes of teenage pregnancy if the rates of teenage pregnancy remained unabated. The study therefore recommended collaborative efforts of adults in various governmental and private spheres for prevention of teenage pregnancy and for support of adolescent mothers and their babies during and after early-unexpected pregnancies. Some of the recommendations were: national awareness campaigns to curb teenage pregnancies; the review of the Life Orientation curriculum by the Department of Basic Education; the re-orientation of health delivery services; the positive inputs of teachers and schools; and a re-orientation of the responsibilities of primary caregivers and other adults / Psychology of Education / D.
