Previous issue date: 2018-05-04 / The empirical research took place in the Juvenile Educational Center incarceration, called
Santa Luzia, from Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil, the only institution in the entire State
with the assignment to perform public service in implementing custodial measures to female
adolescents. Using the methodologies of interviews and participant observation, this study
attempts to understand the representation of these adolescents about socio-education, through their experiences with the incarceration measure and, from this, the collected data were analyzed through the elaboration of categories. At first, it is made a rescue of the theoretical lenses of critical criminology, which guides the interpretations during the research, however highlighting the importance of seeing from the Latin American and Brazilian’s realities. Besides, it points out the authoritarian root that remains in Brazilian’s way of sociability, which has perpetuated, even with the transition from the Irregular Status Doctrine to the Integral Protection Doctrine. Thus, after interviews with 24 adolescents and observation of their routines for two months, for two days a week, in alternating shifts, in their reports was possible to identify three categories that synthesize their representations about this measure. Firstly, the meanings attributed by them to the socio-educational measure were mostly related to punishment and retribution, and very little to emancipation, so that their perceptions about socio-education reflect in "I'm paying for what I've done". Then, it was verified the centrality of evaluations, since the decision about the period of institutionalization must me produced during the intervention, by the reports produced by the institution’s staff, which will support the juridical decision to release the adolescent. In this way, their behaviors are designed to meet institutional expectations, because they know "everything goes to the report". Finally, it was verified that the socio-educational measure of incarceration functions as a dividing line in their biographies, so their lives are divided between before and after, revealing themselves in "how I was before and how I am now”. In this way, the socio-education results in mortification processes of subjectivity.

Previous issue date: 2017-12-01 / In the present dissertation, we intend to analyze the procedure used by the police
to identify the suspect teenager in the city of Recife. When we try to understand
the procedure of suspicion, what is noteworthy is the racial issue. Indeed, whilst
racism assumes founding conditions in our society, the racial issue emerges as
a negative and strategic definer within social control strategies carried out by the
police. The hypothesis we draw is that race not only attracts the looks of
surveillance on behalf of police agents, but also seems to legitimize, both
institutionally and socially, the violent behavior of the police towards the
teenagers’ bodies, and against whoever else is affected by the “looks” of
suspicion. In addition, we observe that, over the years, race has become a crucial
component of the “dangerous individual” social type, and of social groups that
represent a threat to the physical and patrimonial integrity of hegemonic groups.
These constructions that are focused on dangerous classes, under the pretext of
social order maintenance, remain today as criminal policies in the fight against
crime, and are camouflaged in discourses of neutrality and the myth of racial
democracy. In this regard, we draw on the theoretical lenses of critical criminology
to understand the process of suspicion, focusing on the permanence of
criminological speeches in the Brazilian context. Finally, still integrating our
theoretical framework, we felt the need to handle the analytical instruments
proposed by Michel Misse’s concept of criminal suspicion, so as to understand
how autonomized is the procedure of suspicion led by the police,a procedure that
legitimizes a number of authoritarian interventions and that stems from a set of
instruments driven to contain the dangerous character and the deviation that
supposedly determine certain individuals. Methodologically speaking, this is an
ethnography conducted within the premises of the DPCA – Delegacia da Criança
e do Adolescente (the police station specialized in crimes committed by
teenagers) through participant observation in which it was possible to analyze
between the lines of what constitutes a blurred reality in the discourses of
neutrality regarding police action. A police station impacted by the daily violence
that drains over a contingent formed by young and poor black people.

Violence in the home and in intimate relationships : a qualitative exploration of black teenagers' experience and viewsKubeka, Alvina Makhosazana 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Domestic violence in South Africa is increasingly becoming a major social problem.
Domestic violence disrupts family life and the functioning of family members. However,
domestic violence is still narrowly defined and viewed as affecting women who are usually
the victims/survivors of such violence. The impact of domestic violence on children is
largely underestimated and ignored. Most research and intervention programmes have
focused on the problem as it affects women thus treating the impact of violence on children
as of secondary importance. The aim of this study is to examine domestic violence from the
perspective of black teenagers who either witness or experience such violence themselves. In
an attempt to understand and make sense of Black teenagers' experiences and views of
violence in their homes and intimate relationships, insights from different theoretical
perspectives are used. These are Trauma theory, Social learning theory and the Funnel of
Violence theory.
Using a qualitative methodology, the study explores black teenagers experiences of
domestic violence in their home of origin and their perceptions of violence in intimate
relationships. Focus group interviews were conducted with 22 black male and female
teenagers between the ages of 14 and 21 to obtain data. The study was conducted in
Kayamandi, a township situated in the Stellenbosch area.
The findings revealed that the teenagers have been exposed to constant conflict
between their parents, the causes of which include alcohol abuse and infidelity. The
exposure to violence at home has been traumatic and has affected teenagers on an emotional,
psychological and sometimes physical level. The conflict at home has also affected their
ability to cope and adopt in their social and school environment. Some have also been direct
victims of violence since they have suffered abuse at the hands of both their parents. As a
result, their relationship with their parents has been strained. In addition, they seem to have
adopted distorted views on how to deal with problems within relationships. They tend to
view violence as a means to resolve conflict in intimate relationships and some of these
teenagers have come to believe that violence is acceptable since it is an indication of love.
They also believe that violent behaviour is a consequence of provocation and is carried out
unwittingly to punish and discipline the victim. In most cases the victims of violence are
women.
verskillende teoretiese perspektiewe aangewend. Die belangrikste perspektiewe is Trauma
teorie, Sosiale Leerteorie en die sg. 'Funnel of violence' teorie.
Sommige definieer
geweld as 'n indikator van liefde. Sommige interpreteer geweld as grootliks onbedoeld en 'n
