Values of the past and the future: cultural differences in temporal value asymmetry

Guo, TIEYUAN 27 September 2008 (has links)
Past research has indicated that Chinese culture is more past oriented; whereas North American culture is more future oriented. Such cultural differences in temporal orientation may affect how people value future and past events. I predicted that the typical temporal asymmetry effect among European North Americans - placing more value on future events than on past ones - would be reversed among Chinese due to the cultural differences in temporal orientation. I conducted four studies to examine how culture affects the values people attached to past and future events. Overall, the results supported my predictions. Across all four studies, I found that European Canadians attached more monetary value to an event in the future than to an identical event in the past with similar temporal distance; whereas Chinese people placed more monetary value on a past event than on an identical future event. In Study 3, I also investigated the underlying mechanisms that would account for such cultural differences. Among the three mediators believed to be affected by the past and future orientations, I found two that mediated the cultural influences on the temporal value asymmetry effect: (1) emotions associated with future and past events, and (2) mental simulations of future and past events. Specifically, European Canadians predicted stronger emotions for future events than what they recalled for past events, whereas Chinese showed an opposite trend. Emotions associated with future or past events, in turn, predicted the monetary values attached to the events. In addition, relative to Chinese Canadians, who showed clearer mental simulations for past than for future events, European Canadians had clearer mental simulations for future than for past events. Mental simulations, in turn, showed a positive association with the monetary value assigned to the events. / Thesis (Ph.D, Psychology) -- Queen's University, 2008-09-26 16:18:09.371

Brand Rivalries and Their Effect on Consumer Choices

Alvarado Karste, Juan Diego 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation extends our understanding of how rivalries are formed, what their antecedents are, and how and why they influence consumer choices. Furthermore, the psychological processes underlying the rivalry effects and the moderating effects of temporal focus are uncovered.

The effects of temporal orientation on reasoning over relationship conflicts

Huynh, Alex C. January 2013 (has links)
Past research on construal level theory (CLT) has shown that adopting a temporally distant (vs. temporally close) orientation facilitates a more abstract, “bigger picture” representation of events. Furthermore, research on other forms of psychological distance (e.g., self-distance) has linked abstract representations of past interpersonal negative events to positive psychological benefits, such as reduced negative affect. Despite this connection, little work has been done looking at how temporal distance, a form of psychological distance, may also result in positive psychological outcomes. Moreover, few have explored the effects of temporal distance on reasoning within an interpersonal context. Provided the past literature on psychological distance, I hypothesize that a distant temporal orientation when reasoning over a recent romantic relationship conflict will result in greater abstract representations of the past conflict. Given that the context is in an interpersonal domain, I predict that the abstract representation will manifest itself through a more inclusive reasoning strategy, which will lead to beneficial reasoning strategies for the relationship. I test these hypotheses by randomly assigning participants to a present-oriented mindset, or a future-oriented mindset when reflecting on their past conflict. Results from two experiments (Study 1: College students; Study 2: Age-heterogeneous community sample) indicate that taking a future-orientation leads to an inclusive reasoning strategy (i.e., greater non-self centered word use) and also leads to reasoning that is considered conducive to positive relationship outcomes (e.g., lower partner blame and greater expression of growth). Implications for research on psychological distance and reasoning are discussed.

Percepção das ações de cocriação de valor em cooperativas agropecuárias / Perception of value co-creation actions in agricultural cooperatives

Ferraz, Luana Zanetti Trindade 29 June 2017 (has links)
A amostra teve 204 respostas válidas. / This research evaluates the perception of the members in relation to the actions of value co-creation offered by the cooperative and if the characteristics of the cooperative and the members impact on the perception. For evaluation, a model was developed for measuring the perception of value co-creation of the activities developed by the cooperative and analyzed the relationship between the perception of value co-creation actions developed by the cooperative and the characteristics of the members. The research method was the application of a questionnaire to the members of an agricultural coffee cooperative and, to test the proposed model, the Partial Least Square (PLS) method was used. The actions of value co-creation, professionalization of management, satisfaction and loyalty and temporal orientation of the members were measured based on the perception of the members. The sample had 204 valid answers. The results of the descriptive analysis indicate that the cooperative members perceive more value in the activities of the coffee production process, operated by the cooperative to its members in the form of operational actions, than in the end activities. The results of the model demonstrate a significant association between satisfaction and loyalty and perception of value co-creation actions and a positive association between the member\'s time orientation and perception of value-co-creation actions, that is, the perception of the benefits generated by the organization with actions of value co-creation can be influenced by the time horizon of the member and by the level of satisfaction and loyalty. The data also indicate that the latent variable professionalization of management presented satisfaction and loyalty as the main indicator. A complementary sensitivity analysis was also made to verify if the characteristics of the member make the group homogeneous or heterogeneous. It was possible to observe that there is heterogeneity in the perception of the member in relation to the characteristics of rural property size, level of schooling, time of association and indebtedness. The main contributions of this research were the development of an instrument to measure the level of perception of value co-creation actions, as well as the empirical investigation about its relation with the other variables. As practical implications, the results of value co-creation actions with innovation characteristics (value co-creation) tend to be perceived in the long term and influenced by the specific characteristics of the member.

Interações modal-temporais no português brasileiro / Modal-temporal interactions in Brazilian Portuguese

Mendes, Jéssica Viana 25 February 2019 (has links)
This research investigates the temporal behavior of modal sentences with the verbs poder, dever and ter que in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). We take as a starting point the notions of temporal perspective and temporal orientation (Condoravdi (2002)), which can be roughly defined as the moment of modal evaluation of a sentence and the moment of realization of the proposition under the scope of the modal. The two main objectives of this work are (i) to identify the sources of temporal perspective and orientation of modal sentences and (ii) to identify and explore the nature of potential constraints to the temporal interpretation of these sentences. When it comes to the source of temporal perspective, the data from BP corroborates the widely-accepted assumption that epistemic modals are interpreted above TP and AspP, while root modals are interpreted below these two functional projections. Because of this difference in height, epistemic modals always anchor their temporal perspective in the speech time, whereas root modals use tense and aspect to define theirs. As for temporal orientation, we have shown that the properties of each class of modals can also be easily derived from this syntactic difference. Epistemic modals can have truly past orientations, which arise when the tense head under their scope is past. Root modals, on the other hand, use only the aspectual operadors hosted in their prejacents to define their temporal orientation, which explains why these modals can only have present, future or perfect orientations. With respect to constraints to the temporal orientation of modal sentences, we propose that they are far more circunscribed than what previous works have suggested (Werner (2006), Klecha (2016), among others). We assumed that the tendency of root modals to be future-oriented is extralinguistic: the notions normally conveyed by these modals are naturally oriented to the future, but, given an appropriate context, present and perfect orientations can be obtained. The only constraint we actually identified is the impossibility of universal epistemic modals being oriented to the future. Following Giannakidou e Mari (2018), we explained this constraint as a blocking effect caused by competition with the perifrastic future auxiliary ir, which would be the specialized form for the expression of future epistemic necessity

Murder, mayhem, and mourning: a qualitative study of the experiences, reactions, and coping mechanisms of homicide survivors

Quisenberry, Clinton Edward 2009 May 1900 (has links)
Previous research has greatly ignored the unique stressors that homicide survivors experience following the murder of their loved one, indicating a general lack of understanding of the experiences and reactions they are subjected to or the coping mechanisms that they utilize. What little research that had been conducted has largely been made up of anecdotal insight of psychological practitioners who had worked with clients. A need exists to speak with the survivors themselves to chronicle their experiences in as much detail as possible to help researchers and practitioners wrap their mind around the totality of the loss as well as ground future research. The participants in the study consisted of twelve persons who had immediate family members who had been murdered. Participants were interviewed utilizing Lincoln & Guba?s Naturalistic Inquiry paradigm. They were initially interviewed and encouraged to discuss their loss in narrative and then were asked a series of specific questions that may or may not have been discussed during the narrative. The collected data was analyzed utilizing the constant comparison methodology. Results indicate that many homicide survivors feel overwhelmed by the changes that occur in the short and long term. None of the participants reported positive experiences interacting with mental health practitioners but virtually everyone endorsed peer-group support. There was also evidence that participants whose loved one was murdered by a person of an ethnicity that differed from their own resulted in racist feelings towards the other ethnicity. Further, there was no evidence that the process of interviewing homicide survivors was in and of itself negatively perceived or harmful; rather some participants reported feeling relieved that they were able to discuss their loss in totality without having to edit themselves. Results suggest that homicide survivors may spend an unusual amount of time reflecting on the person that their loved one may have become had they not been murdered. Suggestions also include how to best notify and support homicide survivors and how practitioners may best relate with their clients.

Kopplingen mellan historia och samtid blir extra stark under svåra tider

Thorild, Hannes January 2019 (has links)
This paper has the purpose to investigate the relationship between historical consciousness and use of history. In this context the historical consciousness is the way a person can orient themselves through different times. Thus, the paper investigates how temporal orientation can be expressed by upper secondary students. This is achieved by analysing student texts which deal with use of history after the attacks on the twin towers of 9/11. Earlier research suggests that use of history can activate the historical consciousness in the form of temporal orientation. It also suggests that students have difficulties orientating themselves through time especially concerning expressions that connects the different time dimensions. Through the theoretical perspectives of historical consciousness as temporal orientation this paper aims to find out how the use of history can engage students’ historical consciousness and how this historical consciousness expresses itself. This paper concludes that the relationship between the use of history and historical consciousness is that the temporal orientation is activated through symbolism, the need of history at certain times, interlocutors of the use of history as well as narrative capability.

Historiebruk som historiemedvetande i den mångkulturella skolan / Uses of History as Historical Consciousness in the Multicultural School

Juth, Simon, Nilsson, Tobias January 2022 (has links)
The first aim of this SAG is to present and study three different researchers: Dahl (2021),Thorp (2016) and Johansson (2012) on how the subject of the use of history can beimplemented into history teaching and evolve students' way of thinking towards a betterhistorical consciousness. The second aim of this paper is to reflect on how the term uses ofhistory can be best implemented in a multicultural classroom. The third aim is to determinehow the terms use of history, historical consciousness and multiculturalism is defined inacademic research. To make these definitions we used the researchers Aronsson (2002),Karlsson (1999), Nordgren (2006, 2016), Rüsen (2004), Jeismann (1979), Koselleck (2004),Jensen (2003) and Runblom (2006). The material we have been using are doctoraldissertations and licentiate degrees which have been gathered from the digital platformsResearchgate, ERIC and DiVA. In our paper’s result the focus has been to present and reflectthe theoretical approaches that each researcher has obtained through their respective studiesregarding multicultural education, uses of history and historical consciousness. These resultsbecame the basis of a discussion of advantages and disadvantages regarding the optimal wayto construct an education plan for teachers. In our conclusion we presented the case that noneof the researchers' work was complete in itself and can be used in conjunction with each otherto better create a whole sided perspective on the best plan for history teaching. We also cameto the conclusion that terms uses of history, historical consciousness and multiculturalismcan be defined in a variety of ways. There are some disputes between each researcher in howthe relation between historical consciousness and uses of history can be defined. Thoughmost of them agree that multiculturalism includes a variety of aspects such as normality, individuality and that creation of identity is a big part of the multicultural classroom.
