Late Glacial and Holocene Environmental Change Inferred from Sedimentary Archives of Kusawa Lake, Boundary Range Mountains, Yukon Territory, CanadaChow, Nicole A. 13 January 2010 (has links)
Modern Kusawa Lake (60° 19' 55” N, 136° 4' 48” W, 142 km2) of southwestern Yukon Territory drains a 4290 km2 catchment, 4.7 % of which is glacier covered. Sediment cores show variability both down-lake and within specific sub-basins of the lake. In Regions II -V of Kusawa Lake, sediments are mainly clastic with massive to weakly laminated silts and clays interrupted by fine sand units, which reflect distinct runoff events into Region IV from glacier sources. In Region I, massive silts, silt-clay couplets are interrupted by thick sand deposits derived from the Primrose River delta. Further up-lake, the sediment record is further interrupted by modern sediment delivery from the Kusawa Campground alluvial fan.
The relatively small accumulation of lake glacial and Holocene sediment input in Kusawa Lake is similar to other large lakes of the Canadian Cordillera. These patterns reflect a particular style of deglaciation and Holocene sediment inputs.

Reading the transformation : the relationship between literature and territory in contemporary VenetoFrezzato, Enrichetta Lucilla January 2015 (has links)
Reading the Transformation: The Relationship between Literature and Territory in Contemporary Veneto aims at investigating the interrelation between a geographically defined entity and the literary word. Placed in the context of a broader reflection on the dynamics of such relation, this thesis aims at outlining a specific set of theoretical references in order to analyse the case of contemporary Veneto through a close reading of some particularly relevant works by two authors from this region, Massimo Carlotto and Marco Paolini. Developed from an interest in the literary tradition of Veneto and in the theme of landscape and territory representation in literature, this thesis is comprised of two parts: the first one is dedicated to tracing the theoretical, historical, and literary coordinates that define the scope and frame of reference for the thesis; the second one conducts an in-depth analysis of the context in which the works of Carlotto and Paolini are situated. Drawing on concepts pertaining geography, cultural anthropology, and landscape theory, the premise of this thesis is that territory is a complex geographic, historical, social, economic, and cultural entity of which landscape constitutes the visible stratum. Siding with arguments that sustain the centrality of the role of landscape in the process of formation of people's identity, this thesis adopts such concept and employs it as a key to understand the relation between territory and literature. Through the analysis of La verità dell'Alligatore and Nordest by Carlotto and Il Milione and Bestiario Veneto - Parole mate by Paolini, the objective of this thesis is, on one side, to provide an insight into how the transformation of a territory can shape the formation of a collective identity, on the other side, to shed light on the means through the reflection on territory enters the literary space.

January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: With this research we seek to emphasize the importance of studying the gender question under the geographic perspective. For this it was delimited the space of the syndicate as form to demonstrate the power relationships between the genders. By compositions of the directions, we perceived that the woman tend to occupy secondary positions, seeing that the syndicate, as well as the politician space and public in general are occupied by primordially by the men. While that, despite the changes, it has remained only to the woman the responsibility of the maintenance of the house and the reproduction of the force-of-work for the capital, formed by husband, children and proper herself. And aloofness is perceives between the workers and direction of the syndicates, when they haven't adopted politics directed to the participation in the syndicates, even in view of the process of the productive reorganization, in which the woman have inserted in the market of the informal work, deadly diminishing the number of the works of syndicates and potential politics system. But also for proper politics adopted of maintenance of the syndical structure, extremely deficient in terms of politics directed toward the questions that run away from seara of emergency politics. This process aggravates, turning point of the woman don't get one that belongs, as well as a certain aversion to politics question that involved theirs properly everyday. / Mestre

The geographical piedmont : essay for an approach to "interspatialités" prism : study cross between Alps ( France- Swiss ) and Carpathians (Romania)Merle, Anthony 24 September 2015 (has links)
If the mountain is an object that has continued to support the geographical discipline and its developments, the issue of thresholds the mountain has remained relatively marginal. Yet a growing interest in these areas is noteworthy. Many concepts animating discipline (interface, interspatialités, intermediate spaces ...) push to reconsider these blurred areas, the threshold of "the kind of space" or spatial category what the mountain. It is in this context what this crossover study conducted between land North of the Alps in France and Switzerland and field of Romanian Carpathians. This threshold of the mountain foothills called here, can not emerge as exclusively physical or topographical criteria that have longer relevant in an increasingly rooted in the humanities discipline. The foothills can then be defined as the space on which deploys a set of functions called "foothill's functions". It is these features that this is to capture, define, in order to identify the players and explain the spatial and temporal dynamics. These are also the territorial logic and metropolitan which are to be questioned, as these "foothill's functions" can be as many development opportunities, but also of reconciliation competition between territories and / or between cities. Therefore, it is also the genesis and operation of territoriality and, specifically, the process of urbanization who must be considered when we look at these "foothill's functions". Finally, crossover study allows, at least to some extent, to consider the comparison, despite all the pitfalls and limitations that it presents. Emerging paradoxes of this comparison will then constitute elements that may better understand what can be the thresholds of the mountain, but also to propose a new approach to study these courses.

Recognizing the importance and popularity of the internet social networking, especially among the younger portion of the population, this study aims, through the lens of Geography and Cultural Studies, to examine how users of the relation’s site Orkut build position and map their identities through virtual communities present on the respective site. At the same time, concerns about who is this contemporary young and his main identity positions. In this way, we use as theoretical pillars in our research the concepts of identity, territory and community, with emphasis on authors such as Hall, Haesbaert and Bauman, as well as authors related with Cyberspace’s studies. The space for our research is the neighborhood Cidade Baixa, from the city of Porto Alegre/RS - and two virtual Orkut communities that allude to their neighborhood, chosen precisely for the profusion of groups and “tribes” (specially youngers) that we can find there. Our focus stay more closely to the speeches, tensions and positions presented in these communities that cause consequences in the process of building "profiles" of its members. Such virtual spaces proved to be a kind of interesting stage for the “decentralized identities” parade showed by the contemporary youth. We still analyze some points of conexions and divergences between the communities from the on and off world’s sphere in order to not ignore their connection.

Araujo, Rodrigo Wienskoski January 2017 (has links)
Among the most important projects of the Brazilian Military Dictatorship is the building of the Transamazônica Highway (BR-230). With the justification of promoting regional development, the Government interfered in the territorial organization of several indigenous people of the North region of the country. This is the case of the Parakanã living in the Indigenous Land Parakanã, territory borderer by the BR-230. The main objective of this essay is the transformation process of the indigenous Parakanã people territoriality from the consolidation of the Transamazônica highway. Therefore, it was necessary to carry out initial cabinet activities, such as the compilation of bibliographic, cartographic, photographic data, as well as the field activities around the Indigenous Land. The organization of the results was carried out through the researching technique known as content analysis. The Parakanã people were able to manage the contact with the other actors that arrived at the region of the middle Tocantins for several years. However, through the Frontiers of Attraction of the Fundação Nacional do Índio, the state has settled down the indigenous people who lived near the highway. At this point the deterritorialization falls on the Parakanã, they were deprived of the fundamental elements of their territoriality, dismantling the territorial ties and practices they had built. The Parakanã territoriality has been changing by the dynamics of the Brazilian Amazon, the claims for demarcation of the indigenous land Parakanã helped the territorial restructuring of the natives in the post-highway period. Indigenous peoples have a differentiated link with land, which allows for flexibility when designing the territory. There is no need for possession; it is the presence of enemies, mobility, collective plantations, rituals, etc., which constitute the essential elements of the territory and, consequently, territoriality.

Favela-discurso : a constituição institucional do fenômenoCarvalho, Agatha Muller de January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the issue of territory and discursive disputes to problematize the delimitation of the slum phenomenon by different definitions of established institutions like United Nations, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and Institute of Applied Economic Research. The study departure problematizes that each definition of slum uses distinctive classification criteria that produces various statistical data. This data establish different realities about the same phenomenon; constitute numerical discourses on slum and territorialise in the form of imagetic or cartographic discourse. The dissertation proposes to investigate this problem from a general study analyzing slum definitions speeches and their statistical effects, and from a case study about the cartographies made by these speeches, with Porto Alegre as the locus of the case. Within this scope, this study checks, by speech analysis, the differences between the phenomena constituted by each institution in order to establish a slum understanding as a spatial phenomenon.

This study investigates the relationship between the inhabitant and the territory concepts in three Brazilian territories, according the French approach to the foundations of the territorial economy. We seek to identify the main features of the inhabitant in its respective territories, in order to understand how this “territorialized” social actor articulates work and home life in the territory, and to analyze the impacts of his/her actions in the local territorial development process. The inhabitant concept is based on a six elements theoretical framework from the literature review: territory, proximity, territorial resources, everyday life, reciprocity and mode of dwelling. Then, a categorization of an “ideal type” of inhabitant was constructed used as parameter for the data analysis and interpretations to identify the main features of the inhabitant in each context. As an innovative aspect, the research proposes the concept of “territorial engagement”, that reflects the type of relationship between the inhabitant and the territory, which can be instrumental, normative or affective. Therefore, the inhabitant is analyzed on the basis of their relationship with the territory, in other words, mode of dwelling, rather than a social, economic or professional predefined category. This is an exploratory qualitative research which uses the case study (multiple cases) as research strategy, and the inhabitant, as the unit of analysis. The content analysis technique was used for the analysis of the interviews with the local actors. The study points to the complexity of social, economic, political and cultural relationships in each territory and the importance of their socio-historical trajectory for understanding each one. The results show the importance of the inhabitant as a social actor who reinforces local life (game rules) in your mode of dwelling. We also realized the territories porosity face the changes due to human mobility (as the tourists presence, for example) impacting in the inhabitants life. Finally, it was possible identify the ephemeral feature (territory moment) and the multiplicity (multiterritoriality ) of the modes of dwelling, which differentiates the inhabitant of one place to another according the relationship established with the territory.
