The effects of Anglo-Norman lordship upon the landscape of post-Conquest Monmouthshire

Connors, Owain James January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the effects the imposition of Anglo-Norman lordship, following the Anglo-Norman expansion into Wales in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, had upon the landscape of the Welsh border region. In order to achieve this aim this project makes extensive use of digital Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in order to produce a detailed county-wide study of the landscape of post-Conquest Monmouthshire as well as comprehensive case studies of individual Anglo-Norman lordships contained within the boundaries of the county. This thesis also aims to locate its findings within important current debates in historic archaeology about the effects of medieval lordship upon the landscape, on the roles of the physical environment and human agency in the forming of the historic landscape, on the wider role of castles as lordship centres, beyond simple military functionality.

Koch, Jacky 22 September 2012 (has links)
From the end of the Hungarian invasions, in the second third of the 10th Century, until 1300, a growing number of private fortifications was built in Alsace. This phenomenon was represented by dozens of castles, ruins of which punctuate from North to South the eastern side of the Vosges Mountains and stirred up the curiosity of many archaeologists for more than one century. The history of their construction, or "art of building", considered as secondary for a long time, improved thanks to the archaeological studies of elevations. These researches enable to show information relating to the organisation of a building-yard and the management of materials, thanks to the documentation of the different stages of building. The Vosges massif being divided into a sandstone part in the North and a granite part in the South, geological or chemical studies open new fields of knowledge (composition of mortars, stone selection for the facing of wall...). Built upon a well visible summit, the castle gathered the functions of private residence and public defence, so its walls were designed to fit military and residential requirements at best.

Varano, Mariacristina 05 December 2011 (has links)
This research on medieval archaeology focuses on the influence of local and regional powers on the territory occupation of the village of Forcalquier and on its architecture. Our purpose is to clarify the evolution of the occupation of this territory in the period going from IX to XIII century. This period gives us the opportunity to understand the implications of the local political and religious powers and to perceive the social, cultural and material changes which are common to the medieval West. The religious spaces and the political spaces created around Forcalquier a real mosaic of territories, where the diversity of the dominating institutions is shown by material vestiges. This study hopes to contribute to a deeper knowledge of the medieval Provence.

The object of research is composed of two aspects, one material or general and other formal or specific. The material aspect is the work Interior Castle of St. Teresa of Jesus. The formal aspect of the object is to identify traces of the four symbolic natural elements present in the mystical narrative. For that, we turn to the theoretical Gaston Bachelard in order to identify the four natural elements in the work. The ways, methodological procedures, which intended to follow to the resolution of the problem of this research are theoretical. In the theoretical field, will be developed a literature search (presented the authors / researchers in justification and bibliography) that approximates the question of religiosity, spirituality and mystic with the question of culture. First, we will do an approximatively reading to familiarize with the text, from the lens of the four natural elements, that is, imagination material in Gaston Bachelard. Then we will perform the collection of the Castle Interior work passages that indicate the presence of the four natural elements, that is, the material imagination. Thus, will be held the book report of the work and explored the passages according to the prospect of symbolic hermeneutics based on Gaston Bachelard. The third, final step in this process, is to apply the interpretation methodology, that is, the symbolic hermeneutic. That way, we will use for this research the symbolic hermeneutics in the work Interior Castle, from studies about material imagination in Gaston Bachelard / A pesquisa focaliza uma obra clássica do Cristianismo espanhol do século XVI, cuja finalidade é estudar a Imaginação Material e Mística: traços dos quatro elementos naturais presentes na obra Castelo Interior de Santa Teresa d'Ávila.

Serving the Storyline of the Novel: The Powerful Role of the Feudal Servant-Narrator

Turner, Stephanie 01 May 2009 (has links)
This thesis addresses issues of class as represented through the narrative agency exercised by the servant-narrator in Castle Rackrent and Wuthering Heights. Thady Quirk and Ellen Dean are servant-narrators who strategically use feigned allegiance, astute perception, and selective disclosure to wield power over the lives of their masters. These “arts of subordination” allow the servant-narrator to tell his or her own life narrative, while appearing to share the masters’ memoirs. While both servant-narrators are motivated by economic means, Ellen Dean’s involvement throughout Wuthering Heights is further complicated by her desires of emotional connection. However, each servant-narrator achieves his or her goals by manipulating the events and relationships that constitute his or her masters’ lives.

NAGPRA Consultation and the National Park Service

Evans, Michael J., Dobyns, Henry F., Stoffle, Richard W., Austin, Diane, Krause, Elizabeth L. 10 June 1994 (has links)
This study is one of the responses by the National Park Service to requirements in NAGPRA. The study was commissioned by the NPS Applied Ethnography Program in Washington, D.C., to identify individuals and tribes affiliated with the objects of cultural patrimony, sacred objects, or unassociated funerary objects at five NPS units, review those unit summaries, assist park or center staff in initiating consultation regarding those objects, and conduct a case demonstration consultation for Pipe Spring National Monument. The project was administered under Cooperative Agreement #8100 -1 -0001 between the Western Archeological and Conservation Center, National Park Service and the University of Arizona. While this study was specific to NAGPRA- related issues, the NPS does stipulate in its Management Policies (1988) that consultation with Native Americans will occur with regard to cultural resource issues. NAGPRA is not the only consultation arena the NPS is currently involved in with Native Americans.

Auger Gosselin, Louis 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the ways in which IMAX 3-D films positions its spectator. First, we look at the history of 3-D cinema, from its origins to the inauguration of IMAX 3-D in 1986. We argue that for the first 70 years of its history, 3-D cinema was staged as a return to the cinema of attractions, and that this aesthetic was an obstacle to its institutionalization in the mid-50’s and 80’s. Then, we describe the “IMAX experience” and argue that IMAX films induce a state of immersion and, at the same time, draw the viewer’s attention to the presence of the apparatus and the act of mediation. In analysing the movies Sea Monsters: a Prehistoric Adventure and Haunted Castle, we demonstrate that this tension between viewer immersion and medium reflexivity serves to glorify the IMAX trademark. Furthermore, we examine the relationship between the punctual structure imposed by the logic of attractions and the narrative line held by each and every IMAX film.
