Macro Self-Portraiture and the Feminine Grotesque

Wages, Emily C 01 January 2016 (has links)
According to the Mirriam-Webster online dictionary, “grotesque” is defined as “a style of decorative art characterized by fanciful or fantastic human and animal forms often interwoven with foliage or similar figures that may distort the natural into absurdity, ugliness, or caricature.” Originating from the Old Italian grottesca, cave painting, feminine of grottesco of a cave, from the time of its conception, the grotesque has been inexorably linked to art and the female. The work of other female artists that explore themes of the feminine grotesque are discussed, including Katheryn Wakeman, Jenny Saville, and Maria Lassnig. In my current work, I have been creating oil paintings of macro images of my own body to construct a fragmented and magnified, borderless, grotesque view of the body. The images focus on the mouth, due to its complicated nature as both internal and external, hidden and in plain sight, as well as due to connotations with speech, ingestion, and sexuality. The work walks a fine line between aesthetically pleasing while also commanding an uncomfortably visceral, fleshy quality. While the works are somewhat ambiguous and allow for various readings, they also allude to larger issues of sexism. The use of magnification and fragmentation references the insufficient representation of the female body both art historically —with the beautiful female nude painted by the male artist—as well as contemporarily in an overly-Photoshopped society. The visceral feeling of disgust should allow viewers to commune with their own bodies’ psychophysiological reactions and question the politics of how beauty standards are established as well as whether beauty is a valuable concept when judging the female form.

Corpos distópicos: o dualismo grotesco na cinematografia cyberpunk / Dystopian bodies: the grotesque dualism in cinematography cyberpunk

Alexandre Vasilenskas Gil 29 April 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze corporeality in cyberpunk cinema. This cinema is defined by a new form of dualism associated to the presuppositions of the grotesque aesthetics. It is a little individualized body and open to the interchange with the external world and defined by a new form of conflict between memory and organicity. The thesis shall also discuss the social context of cyberpunk, which aimed to combine countercultural discussions of the 1960s with discussions coming from the contemporary technologies and their effects on the new conceptions of corporeality and the body/mind dualism.

This work proposes reflections on the grotesque phenomenon, which is defined from some aspects such as: strange, bizarre, shapless, ridiculous, hybrid, horrendous, extravagant , funny and tragicomic, bringing as focus to this discussion it’s ability to dialogue seemingly contradictory elements. These oppositions that identify this phenomenon manifested from it’s tragicomic aspect. Added to this reflection, characteristic features of the clown language, in which the tragicomic grotesque is pointed out as one of the important constituents of this comic figure, as exemplified in the pair of clowns, Branco and Augusto. All of this discussion leads us to the main goal of this work, which is to establish an analogy between the tragicomic grotesque on the clown and the characters Doctor, Captain and Woyzeck of the artwork ‘Woyzeck’ by Georg Büchner. In this way, the research shows itself important as far as proposes a debate of the aesthetic phenomenon of tragicomic grotesque, strong influence in many artistic and dramaturgical productions, expanding our understanding of modern man, strongly characterized by its contradictions. Also, combine this reflection to the clown, helps us to understand the comedic aspects of this character, expanding our way of conceiving the laughter naturally, linked to the clown character, in their ability to seek the tragic aspect of life, inspiration to raise the comic. It is from this reflection, we seek an approach between these aspects of the clown with some characters of Woyzeck work keeping alive an author and an artwork of great contributions to the history of modern and contemporary dramatic art.
