Resolution Independent Path Rendering of Dynamic GeometryPersson, Niklas January 2021 (has links)
Vector graphics rendering is the subject of a large number of research papers. However, many of them lack results regarding animated vector graphics despite its importance in many fields. In this thesis the resolution independent rendering of animated graphics is studied. A testing platform is implemented to evaluate selected rendering backends based on state-of-the-art rendering algorithms and widely used vector graphics libraries. The selected rendering algorithms were selected because they were lacking results for animated graphics. The objectives of the work are achieved through the analysis of the results produced by the animation platform on specifically designed scenarios. The performance of the renderers is evaluated in terms of frame time and sensitivity to various parameters defining the animation. The results showed that the algorithms not originally designed for rendering animated graphics are applicable for this task but tradeoffs have to be made to choose a suitable rendering backend.

Online Students' Perceptions and Utilization of a Proximate Community of Engagement at an Online Independent Study ProgramOviatt, Darin Reed 01 April 2017 (has links)
Distance learning has provided solutions for students for more than a century. Students access distance learning due to issues with access, credit recovery need, or need for flexibility in location, time, pace, or duration of instruction. Recent advances in technology and instructional designs allow more interactive and synchronous instruction. Researchers suggest that designs using collaborative-constructivist approaches result in deeper learning and increased student satisfaction. Such courses implement theories based on interactions, creation of communities, and learner-centered design. The increase in online curriculum offered and, in some cases, required for K-12 students indicates a need to consider learning characteristics of adolescent learners. Adolescent learners are not as self-regulated, metacognitive, and technologically capable as adult learners. Communities and interactions require the involvement of parents or other involved adults to encourage learner engagement. New theories are emerging concerning learning engagement by adolescents including the adolescent community of engagement (ACE) framework. This dissertation reports two studies of K-12 online students enrolled in independent study courses. The researcher applied the elements of the ACE framework as a lens to study independent study students' experiences with a local community of support. Could students benefit from the curation and support of a proximate community of engagement (PCE)? The first study found that students perceive that a PCE would be helpful to learning when they enroll. The second study found that students completing a course organically accessed a PCE during their course experience, even without coaching and curation activities. Credit recovery students were more likely to perceive value in a PCE but actually created and used such a community at the same level as other learners. Parents and teachers were most often identified as the local support students would, and did engage. Future research was suggested to identify ways to encourage PCE curation, the most effective and supportive PCE interactions, and best practices to train and support members of the PCE.

The saints of African Independent Churches in Namibia : empirical research from Korean missionary perpectivePark, Jinho January 2014 (has links)
The history of African Independent Churches (AICs) in Southern Africa goes back
for more than a hundred years. They have proliferated geographically and
demographically in Africa more than the mainline churches could ever have
imagined. They have grown to be as widespread and as influential as the African
mainline churches. The reason for this growth is that the AICs are the churches of
African indigenous people. They are launched by Africans from a background of
an African traditional and cultural frame of reference. The most significant reason
is that the founders of these churches are not Westerners, but Africans. Western
missionaries find it difficult to understand the AICs from their perspective. Thus the
Western churches describe the AICs as sectarian, separatist, syncretist, nativitist,
and so on. Nevertheless, some scholars are attempting to view the AICs in
positive ways.
The fact that these two different churches have never acknowledged each other as
true churches is a big challenge for Christian missions in Namibia. Each group has
been viewing and judging the other party through suspicious eyes from their own
perspective, each driving the other to block the channel of reconciliation before the
presence of God. With the aim of solving this problem, this thesis attempts to
answer the following questions about the AICs in Namibia:
• What are the reasons that the AICs in Namibia have been seceded from
mission churches?
• What are the activities in civil society in which the AICs in Namibia are
currently involved?
• Do the AICs engage in any activities which go against the Word of God?
• What causes other churches to be suspicious of the AICs?
• What level of enculturation is inherent to the AICs in Namibia? In other
words, what is the relationship between the liturgies of the AIC and African
traditional religion and African culture?
• What makes the AICs in Namibia regard themselves as a church?
Would it be possible for the AICs and the mainline churches in Namibia to
cooperate in Christian missionary work?
• What is a possible Korean missionary perspective on this particular
situation?
This will be dealt throughout this thesis from a Korean missionary missional
perspective. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Science of Religion and Missiology / PhD / Unrestricted

Enhancing the sense of self of peer supporters using life design counsellingPienaar, Marthe-Marie January 2017 (has links)
One of the main challenges experienced during adolescence is that of developing a coherent sense of self, or self-identity (Becht, 2016; Bester & Quinn, 2010; Erickson, 1977). This study used a parallel (or convergent) interactive multi-method design, embedded in an intervention, to explore the possible effects of group based life design counselling on the sense of self of female adolescent peer supporters. The possibility of assisting more individuals by using intervention techniques in groups was also explored. The research study is embedded in a constructivist paradigm and, working from an interpretive stance, the researcher collected, analysed and reported on quantitative and qualitative data to gained insight into the participants’ experiences surrounding narrative group life design techniques and their possible impact on enhancing the sense of self. The overall findings indicate that the intervention programme enhanced the sense of self of the participating peer supporters. The mixed-method research results from this study provide a clearer view of how groups of adolescents can be supported to become better equipped to negotiate transitions in their lives, by enhancing their sense of self. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Educational Psychology / PhD / Unrestricted

Modiciency - Efficient industrial hydraulic drives through independent metering using optimal operating modesKolks, Giacomo, Weber, Jürgen January 2016 (has links)
Independent metering poses a possibility to improve energy efficiency of throttlecontrolled hydraulic single-rod cylinder drives. This paper deals with energetic potentials gained through variable circuitry that come along with independent metering. A method to assess energetic potentials is described, based on load specific, optimal operating modes. As a means of yielding maximum energy efficiency for a wide range of applications, a smooth mode switching algorithm that minimizes losses and allows good motion tracking is proposed. The mode switching algorithm is validated in simulation and on a test stand.

Pressure compensator control – a novel independent metering architectureLübbert, Jan, Sitte, André, Weber, Jürgen 27 April 2016 (has links)
This contribution presents an operating strategy for a novel valve structure for mobile machines’ working hydraulics which combines the flexibility and energetic benefits of individual metering with the functionality of common primary pressure compensation (IPC). The aim is to set up a system that uses a minimal amount of sensors and simple control algorithms. A control strategy theoretically described in /1/ is modified to facilitate the practical implementation on a mini excavator implement as a test rig. This test rig consists only of components that are currently available off-the-shelf to show that it is possible to develop an individual metering system under these economic restrictions. The novel is more energy efficient than common flow sharing systems but provides the same functionality. The control algorithm is experimentally evaluated in terms of functionality and energy consumption. Simulations show potential for further improvements.
