Predictive Validity of the LOOK

The LOOK, an iOS app, is a viewing time measure used to assess sexual interest. The measure is based on the assumption that sexual interest can be assessed by the amount of time a participant spends looking at an image. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of the LOOK, a newly developed viewing time instrument, to accurately screen and diagnose individuals with deviant sexual interest. The profiles of known sexual offenders were compared to norm-referenced profiles of an exclusively heterosexual, non-pedophilic, male, college student population. Researchers were not able to find a fair constant multiplier that would allow for a positive screen of our offender sample while not over identifying our non-offender sample. Instead a graph was generated which showed the trends of offenders were closely related to those of non-offenders using Fischer’s Chi-square model. Additionally, when looking at the predictive validity of being able to identify victim demographics of known perpetrators based on Fischer’s Chi Square residuals, only 15.9% were found to have offense histories that were consistent with their profiles on the LOOK. The LOOK, using Fischer’s Chi-square model does not seem to be able to differentiate offenders from non-offenders. Future studies may include looking at the predictive nature of ipsative data.

Falsification of the LOOK

The LOOK is a viewing time measure that seeks to assess sexual interest patterns and is currently in development at Brigham Young University. This instrument is intended to aid current efforts to prevent child sexual abuse by identifying deviant sexual interests. A recently presented study on a similar viewing time measure has raised concerns regarding individuals' ability to falsify sexual interest patterns on average. This study seeks to extend this falsification research to the LOOK in order to assess if falsification of this measure is possible by means of speed or pretense. Participants were exclusively heterosexual non-pedophilic males and females. Sexual interest patterns for 151 females and 150 males were used. These individuals were distributed into either a control group or one of four possible falsification conditions for each gender. The study used Fischer's Chi-square scoring procedure to examine the significance of differences between the averaged patterns of sexual interest obtained from falsification groups and average expected interest patterns of control groups. Results of this study found that 4 of 8 falsification groups were able to significantly falsify sexual interest patterns on average. It appears that, on average, everyone in the pretense groups were capable of falsifying results. Men and women were able to emulate response patterns of the opposite gender regardless of whether given information about the basic mechanism of visual response time instruments. It is concluded that while the LOOK seems to possess a degree of sensitivity toward falsification efforts, improvements are still needed in order to increase its ability to detect test-taker's efforts to falsify results on average.

Le cliquet de Muller est un modèle mathématiques illustrant l'accumulation de mutations délétères dans une population asexuée. L'idée principale est que l'absence de recombinaison oblige les enfants à avoir au moins autant de mutations nocives que leurs parents, et au bout d'un certain temps, le nombre minimum de mutations délétères de la population, qui est donc un processus croissant, augmente : on dit alors que le cliquet clique. Le modèle du cliquet de Muller qui est étudié dans cette thèse est un système infini d'équations différentielles stochastiques de Fleming-Viot couplées. On montre dans une première partie d'abord que le cliquet s'actionne en temps fini p.s., puis que l'espérance du temps mis pour cliquer est également finie. On utilise pour cela des comparaisons d'équations stochastiques et des changements de temps. Dans une deuxième partie, on démontre que ce modèle est équivalent à un modèle du look-down modifié auquel on a ajouté des mutations et des morts. Puis dans la troisième partie on généralise le résultat de la deuxième à un cadre plus large de systèmes d'équations différentielles stochastiques. / Muller's Ratchet is a model from evolutionary theory describing the accumulation of deleterious mutations in asexually reproducing population. The lack of recombination implies that children have all the deleterious mutations of his parent. The minimal number of deleterious mutations carried in the population is an non-decreasing process, and if it increases we say that the Muller's ratchet clicks. The model studied in this thesis is an infinite system of stochastic differential equations. In the first chapter, we first prove that the ratchet clicks in finite time a.s., then that the clicking time has finite expectation. For this we use comparison arguments and time changes. In the second chapter, we prove that this model is equivalent to a modified look-down model with mutation and selection. In the third chapter we generalize the results of chapter 2 to a more general model.

La presente tesis busca evaluar la viabilidad de la implementación de un Salón de Belleza en Lima “Free & Beauty”, con dos diferenciadores: un simulador virtual de look y el empleo de productos naturales. Con esta propuesta se pretende atender a mujeres: i) que desean un cambio en su imagen, pero no se animan a realizarlo por diversos temores y ii) gestantes, lactantes, que sufren de reacciones alérgicas o están interesadas en el cuidado del medio ambiente. En el rubro de la belleza, se aprecia un crecimiento en el uso de productos naturales y de herramientas tecnológicas que refuerzan el servicio personalizado para cada mujer. La investigación del mercado incluyó: análisis del sector y competencia, encuestas, focus group y entrevista a experto. Se validó que la idea de negocio es atractiva, y existe una intención de consumo, principalmente, por el simulador, cuyo uso no ha sido identificado en otros salones de belleza en Perú. Para posicionarnos en el mercado, se abordarán estrategias de marketing en el lanzamiento y negocio en marcha, a través de un evento de inauguración, promociones personalizadas, publicidad en página web y redes sociales. Esto, unido a la calidad de servicio y amabilidad del personal, aportarán a la publicidad “boca a boca”. El proyecto requiere una inversión total de S/ 83,867, que se cubrirá con el aporte de los socios y financiamiento bancario. Cuenta con una TIRF de 33% y un VANF de S/ 35,002.81. Por lo expuesto, consideramos que la idea de negocio es viable. / This thesis looks for evaluate the viability of implementing a Beauty Salon in Lima, with two differentiators: a virtual look simulator and the use of natural products. This proposal tries to serve women: i) who want a change in their image, but they are not sure to do because of various fears and ii) pregnant or lactating, who suffer from allergic reactions or are interested in caring for the environment. In the beauty segment, there is a growth in the use of natural products and technological tools, that reinforce personalized service for each woman. Market research included industry and competition analysis, surveys, focus group and expert interview. It helped to validate that the business idea is attractive, and there is a consumer intention, mainly due to the simulator, whose use has not been identified in other beauty salons in Peru. In order to position the business, marketing strategies will be oriented in the opening and ongoing business, through a launch event, personalized offers, advertising on the website and social networks. This, and the quality of the service and kindness of the staff, will contribute to the “word of mouth” advertising. The project requires a total investment of S/ 83,867, which will be covered with the contribution of the partners and a bank loan. It has a TIRF of 33% and a VANF of S/ 35,002.81. Numerical modeling of compositional two-phase reactive transport in porous media with phase change phenomena including an application in nuclear waste disposal

Non-isothermal compositional two-phase flow is considered to be one of the fundamental physical processes in the field of water resources research. The strong non-linearity and discontinuity emerging from phase transition phenomena pose a serious challenge for numerical modeling. Recently, Lauser et al.[1] has proposed a numerical scheme, namely the Nonlinear Complementary Problem (NCP), to handle this strong non-linearity. In this work, the NCP is implemented at both local and global levels of a Finite element algorithm. In the former case, the NCP is integrated into the local thermodynamic equilibrium calculation. While in the latter one, it is formulated as one of the governing equations. The two different formulations have been investigated through several well established benchmarks and analyzed for their efficiency and robustness. In the second part of the thesis, the presented numerical formulations are applied for application and process studies in the context of nuclear waste disposal in Switzerland. Application studies comprehend the coupling between multiphase transport model and complex bio-geo-chemical process to investigate the degradation of concrete material due to two major reactions: carbonation and Aggregate Silica Reaction(ASR). The chemical processes are simplified into a lookup table and cast into the transport model via source and sink term. The efficiency and robustness of the look-up table are further compared with a fully reactive transport model.

Weisenburger / This report examines how 17th Street on the Kansas State University campus, initially a service road on the west edge of the campus, has become a major point of public campus access while retaining its function as a service road. In addition, this report conducts interviews with 10 persons with various backgrounds and experiences involving 17th Street to understand public impressions and interests regarding 17th Street. Finally, this report reviews future development scenarios of 17th Street that allow 17th Street to be a contributor with a distinctive character to the university. When Kansas State University was transferred from old Bluemont Central College to its current location in 1875, 17th Street, which now crosses the middle of the campus on a North-South axis, was outside of the campus’ core facility areas. As various university programs have grown throughout the late 20th Century, the campus of Kansas State University has expanded toward the west. As a result, the relative proximity of 17th Street to the center of campus has changed. Now, 17th Street is recognized as one of the major entrances to campus from the south; yet because of the street’s initial and ongoing service function and its service-related facilities, there are parts of the corridor that are not attractive. It is desired for 17th Street to become a more appealing and functional part of the university experience for guiding and welcoming visitors to the campus.

The IADS provides enhanced situational awareness through a display capability designed to increase the confidence of the engineer in making clearance decisions within a Mission Control Room (MCR) environment. The engineer achieves this confidence level through IADS’ real-time display capability (every data point) and simultaneous near real-time processing capability consisting of both time and frequency domain analyses. The system displays real-time data while performing interactive and automated near real-time analyses; alerting the engineer when displayed data exceed predefined threshold limits. The IADS provides a post-test capability at the engineer’s project area desktop, with a user interface common with the real-time system. The IADS promotes teamwork by allowing engineers to share data and test results during a mission and in the post-test environment. The IADS was originally developed for the government’s premier flight test programs. IADS has set the standard for MCR advancements in data acquisition and monitoring and is currently being integrated into all the existing MCR disciplines.
